Aye :)

She's not actually famous... she is easy on the eyes though, and who doesn't love geek girls.
3

@Fosco um, @RebeccaChernoff for one?
;-)

She doesn't love geek girls?.. perhaps... but she is one, so I don't think that counts. We all love her!

hmm geek girl on geek girl action
there is something very wrong with me
3

@PopularDemand Folks treated her like a celeb in chat?
I know she's been around SO pretty much since the beginning

7:04 PM
@drachenstern you have email, /blame @TimStone

> "The emergence of data mining by third party advertisers has caused a national debate from privacy experts, lawmakers and browser supporters. Mozilla has proposed a new feature that will prevent people's personal information from getting mined and sold for advertising. The feature would allow users to set a preference that will broadcast their desire to opt-out of third party, advertising-based tracking via a 'Do Not Track' HTTP header with every click or page view in Firefox."

@Fosco ok, true, point taken

From /.

@Zypher ROFLMAO

aka, wtf? you're going to send a header saying "please don't track me" and hope the scum and villiany adhere to that?

7:05 PM
@drachenstern Exactly... why would anyone respect it.. lame!

@drachenstern More like hoping the white-washed scum will respect it.

@Zypher no there's not.

You don't expect the shady auto-dialers to respect the Do Not Call list, but you rather hope the local roofing company will.

@Josh I have found that most girls are actually rather open to the ideas of woman-on-woman intriugue, it's just that they don't see the absolute balls-out desire that men apparently view it as.

...I think this is a discussion best avoided in public chat... XD

7:07 PM
@Josh is that really your last name?

@drachenstern that's what tequilla is for

@drachenstern what, Gitlin? Yes.

@Shog9 sadly I want the intent to be the other way around. Would make life so much more pleasant
@Josh nice

@Zypher oy.
3

@drachenstern I suppose so. It's a name. There are many names, that one happens to be mine...
And like 5 outher people's, LOL
I think @RebeccaChernoff was here when I was asking how to respond to someone who emailed me about a funeral for someone I had no idea who they were

7:09 PM
@Josh needz moar namespacing

@Shog9 Agreed!

Apparently, I have a grave and a grieving family that I've never met. Real names are troublesome that way.

true :-)
OK, now going to meet with my boss, talk to you guys later. Thanks again to everyone for your advice!

I should probably attend to bread and cheese and soup <bah spelliing corrections>

mmm... bread-cheese soup!

7:21 PM
@Shog9 Speaking of which, ever get around to making that apple ketchup?

@Shog9 mmmm french onion soup properly prepared :d
I could use some
with that in mind: LUNCH

7:37 PM
@shog9 - That's better than being a murderer on death row in the south.
Unfortunately I no longer rank well for my own name.

there's a MSO thread for basically every point made there

Obviously SO needs to hire a well spoken social pr specialist that just hangs out on Reddit and other places all day and defuses problems.
2
For every action there is an equal and opposite overreaction.

@Zypher - Had lunch yet?
is working on reading two 20 page spreadsheets and comparing them
@badp Yea, that is a terrible thread.
does anyone know why Windows SteadyState breaks the left shift key?
@Pollyanna @Tyler, pin this. @Jeff, read this.

how can you be steady if you're shifting?

@badp If you're on Reddit for wrong reasons, the sh*t is going to hit the fan.

7:52 PM
@Fosco hehe (is out of stars)

@Pollyanna @RebeccaChernoff sounds like it!
hides
@shamittomar That's not relevant to my remark.

@Pollyanna Yes, maybe Jeff can appoint a mod for that too, a "Reddit mod" :)

hehehe, no, no, no, this wouldn't be a mod. It would be a subversive element we would insert into other organizations to make sure that business always goes well for us. Somewhat like a spy, but more proactive...
Oh wait, this reeks of somafia doesn't it? Or was it the cabal? I never got the terms right...

One of my business ideas includes creating an add-on facebook app, in order to spread on facebook like a virus.

Ah, Facebook, the world's digital Petri dish.

7:57 PM
I love Facebook.

scum of the webs

Any Redditor here ?

@shamittomar Can we get rid of the "for the wrong reasons" part of that statement?

Wow, going through the late night chat log here is more entertaining than I would have thought.

@Shog9 Well, the Reddit has helped many people. I see that almost every week. So, if you're there for good reasons, Reddit definitely helps. IMHO.

8:10 PM
@Pollyanna wow, hadn't googled myself in a while... I'm still on the first page of results, but not top, and only once. Pretty sad.
OTOH, I own "shog9"

@shog9 heh. It's good to have a unique nick

@Pollyanna Of course it is. That's when the vampires come out...

Wait, @jeff is a vampire? I thought it was only @jonskeet?

A vampire in one time-zone is a human in other time-zone :)

8:17 PM
From what I've seen so far, Stack Exchange is where people go for facts. Quora is where people go for opinions.

hmm...
maybe that isn't spam
I'm confused

CerberusMy answer is more like a couple of questions: Do you prefer rare herbs, a living organ, or rather plain gold as a sacrifice? Do you have a website with "find nearest temple" where we can worship you? What is it like, up there? Do the other gods also have the divine ability of writing godly scri...

@balpha I think he was trying to say your script is really useful, in an extremely roundabout way

@balpha Apparently they're really, really, really enthusiastic about that script.

yeah, I figured that
should have read the whole thing before deleting it :)

Sounds time-consuming

8:20 PM
Starting off with "rare herbs" was probably not his best choice :P

I know some badges you can get multiple times, are gold tag-badges like that? Or is that a one-time-only affair?

tag badges are once-only, and are the only badge which can be automatically revoked by the system, I think?

@ircmaxell They say on the badge description page if you can get them multiple times (I don't think gold tag badges have that property)

Oh, they do? Oh ok
Ahh, I see

Plus, when in doubt, you can always just look at Jon Skeet's profile. :P

@RebeccaChernoff, (our time zones don't overlap much!) TBH Doodle was much simpler and elegant before they started trying to monetize...
A good example of monetization gone really wrong...

Heh, just replied to the comment on the post.

@RebeccaChernoff, ok :)

Just repeated what I'd said here. (:

8:32 PM
Anyone up for an easy design pattern question?

weird, alerts are off

@shamittomar I mod a reddit no one is caring about, does that count? :)

@RebeccaChernoff, but the idea is good - DOT, KISS. Enter a title/description, choose dates, and finished. Ultra-deluxe, enter an email address too.
Of course, now that they've got a dev-team, administratives etc, just keeping it too that was too easy :)

The organizer interface is painful.
Parts of it are among the better I've seen looking around for something.

Anyways, getting towards the end of my day here. Maybe catch you at the other end of your day, when I get up :)

8:36 PM
hehe

I'm creating my very first little Swing app. When the program opens, it has a welcome menu with "start new" and "load saved" buttons. Clicking "start new" ought to wipe out the welcome menu and replace it with a totally different panel. I'm not sure what the best way to create that functionality is. I could pass my JFrame as an argument into... just about everything, but that feels hacky to me.
Is there a design pattern I should be applying here? A name would be enough, I can use Google on my own from there.

@PopularDemand I think the observer pattern comes into play here, but honestly I've always had a tough time with Swing, heh.
For some reason I have a harder time thinking MVC in a desktop application.

100% of my GUI knowledge is hack-tastic

Jin
is it normal that each one of my Chrome tabs is eating up 1gig of memory?
i have like a million tabs open right now

Usually my JFrame has a public static field called "me" holding the singleton
@Jin You have like a million gigs of memory?

Jin
8:43 PM
@MichaelMrozek yes, yes i do.

His computer is Google data center

@PopularDemand I haven't yet; need to plan on meatloaf or something where it'd shine

@MichaelMrozek They got 96GB for their server, and that was just for their database. You think they'd limit themselves to double, triple, or even sextuple digits worth of memory for their designer to run Photoshop?

pfft my home desktop has 12gb

@Shog9 Yeah, I'm planning on making it tonight but I'm not sure what I'm going to put it on. Maybe just good ol' fries, to start.

8:46 PM
My home desktop has 768mb
... :(

@MichaelMrozek just add 3 zero and you can match @Jin RAM

@statuscompleted Is there a convenient button I can push somewhere to accomplish that?

@Jin I'm gonna go with no...

@MichaelMrozek Ask @RebeccaChernoff to make an apps for that :p

8:49 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Until I remembered that you use Dvorak, I couldn't figure out how in the world you managed those typos

Heh heh.

@Shog9 Speaking of typos @RebeccaChernoff makes all the time

Drat!

@TimStone I don't think so... it looks like that's the opposite of what I'm trying to do.

8:52 PM
@MichaelMrozek ...?

Xcode's Console was lagging and I hit clear instead of stop, by mistake.
so it ran then cleared!

@RebeccaChernoff Joke? Sorry :-\

JOKE FAIL.

Apparently

@PopularDemand Well, you want the panel to be notified of the button click event in some way, and take an action on it. The simplest way to do that is to make the panel an action listener of the button, but I've always felt that was dirty.

8:56 PM
@TimStone Yeah, that's the exact situation that made me think "... this can't be right. I should ask about it on SO chat."
(But nobody was over there, so you guys got it.)

You can have an intermediary controller, but that really ends up being the same sort of deal.
I'm not sure that there's necessarily a better way to go though, but you do have to jump through some hoops to prevent getting circular dependencies. Granted, Swing has so many of those it isn't funny, so..meh.

9:24 PM
Out of curiosity, about Swing
JPasswordField has a deprecated getText() and instead offers a getPassword() method, returning char[]
I guess this is to encourage people to not treat passwords as plain text, but as the input of cryptographic/hashing functions!
Woo! Nice!
...except those take byte[]'s, not char[]'s.

@badp It's because arrays are passed by reference, so after you're done with it you can zero the array (which will zero the internal password field storage)
At least that's what it seems from the doc

@MichaelMrozek yeah, well, it so happens that the way to go from char[] to byte[] is to make a String from char[] and decode it to byte[]

:). You could always do it manually

what a freaking way to start the week

@Josh it could be worse. You could have just discovered that your investors hail from Nigeria!

9:32 PM
@TimStone @badp @PopularDemand, email is off, we'll see what happens!
@badp This is true, that would have been worse

crosses fingers

When did you switch from radp @badp?

That took less time than I expected there @Josh

@drachenstern I have done nothing else so far today... Also, this is just an email to schedule a call

Klonepam and lunch make menvery sleepy.
Plus Iron Man is on FX...

9:34 PM
@Josh What e-mail? I briefly popped into your advice room earlier today but other than that have been paying less attention than usual.

@Josh sounds like my day #YouAreNotAlone

I need some unicode encodings for a few characters in C
2

unicode? meaning UCS2?

@Moshe - U+0193
U+1E21

Yes

9:37 PM
There you go, unicode encodings for a few characters.

Not even sure, I need it to work in ObjC

Although I hear new aussies are more familiar with U+1F411
@Moshe - Consider this question: stackoverflow.com/questions/3347688/…

@Josh I did to fix an issue with my radp bot, he was misbehaving.

@badp Ahhh
@badp Giving out radical passwords? :-)

yeah, like "rainbowtablemyass"
not very appropriate

9:48 PM
He developed an unhealthy obsession with burnination.

(it claimed "myass" was salting. I must have wired something very wrong.)

Is there a list of edits pending approval anywhere?
2

@MichaelMrozek Good question, I want to know also

I would expect it to be in the 10k links page, so I think there probably isn't one

10:05 PM
BAH! Jeff closed @MarkE's question as "Too Localized"!
WTF?

@Josh That was my reaction too, until I saw his answer, which was rational

@MichaelMrozek rational as long as he does reopen

@Josh Or the problem gets fixed before the feature officially "launches"
Which I assume is the plan

yes, true

15 hours ago, by Tim Stone
I'd agree with @mootinator, people do many things even when there's no clear reason for them to. The only issue I had with the question being closed is whether or not the edit is actually blocked by that pending approval...if it is, and that thing is turned on all the time now (which maybe waffles is still only doing in in small time frames), that's kind of a big problem.
</lazy>

10:10 PM
he was in here talking about it yesterday

I would like it if meta were part of helping to fix the problem but it looks like that's not the case

Yeah, I think Benjol linked to the start of the conversation earlier or something.

@TimStone OH, yes, he did

I've not really kept up on how this works; is it two 2k users needed to approve, or some lower limit?

I have had other things going on and was too busy to read that :-)
@MichaelMrozek yes, two 2kers

10:11 PM
Why would it not be one?

@Josh say what now?

because approving an edit wil grant reputation to the user

Er...really?

and if it was just one, you could give your own puppet accounts rep

@MichaelMrozek That's the point :-)

10:11 PM
Is that retroactive? I think I'll have about 90k on SO

@RebeccaChernoff Sorry, that was unintentional :-)

I guess I should go read the Jeff conversation

it's going to be capped, no more than 1k rep can be gained through edits and you stop getting rep past 1k total rep

Has [tag:feature-request] functionality been disabled? Or is it just me?

@MichaelMrozek no, and even if it were, 1K limit

10:12 PM
I believe he put it as "bootstrapping people to become editors" or something.

the goal, apparently, is to get edits out of the 95% of SO's traffic -- the drivebys that arent even registered, on the long tail old questions

@PopularDemand It's broken, there's a bug report out already.

4
Q: [tag:example] syntax not working?

flutefluteThis seems to be broken across SE. For instance this recent meta post and this one on Ask Ubuntu meta. In places where it "already was" the formatting continues. (Example) Here's the shortest-distance example of this [meta-tag:bug].

@TimStone Thanks.

I think it's supposed to be a funny Hitckhiker's reference, but I'm really not sure

10:14 PM
It's actually a hilarious Heinze reference.

@MichaelMrozek WTF is that?
@Shog9 better explain quick before it gets my downvote!

How much of my 1k "edit rep" did I earn for this?

@PopularDemand holy crap that was a horrible question before!

> minor formatting fixes and retag
...

HEAVEN somebody stocked Chai Latte for the Keurig today
my throat thanks them

10:21 PM
@PopularDemand 0, question was closed. (← sad but true.)

@MichaelMrozek I'm glad someone appreciates that.

Now to go steal all the rest of the tibs and store them away

I should consider leaving edit summaries; I never do because it seems pointless

735 unique visits to @YiJiang's SE election page today

They only appear right next to the diff explaining exactly what I did

10:21 PM
Also, henceforth I am no longer in chat actively. @me as you need me. #MustFinishCode

@MichaelMrozek That's great, I didn't even read that
@MichaelMrozek I always do if I'm editing someone else's post. However mine have started to get increasingly snarky...

@badp Are you serious? What about a hypothetical edit to a closed question that makes it so much more clear that it gets reopened as a result?

@PopularDemand I still don't think Jeff would enable anon/low rep edits for closed questions
hence, +0

The last time I went to Yi's election page it randomly listed me first; this time it listed me second. I approve of this random number generator

@badp Lizaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard!!!
@MichaelMrozek So, by the time the election rolls around, you will be last? I, too, approve of this random number generator.

10:24 PM
@PopularDemand No, I just keep becoming more first, and it adds more and more whitespace between my entry and all the others

Yay!
Now, to copy the class, cut'n'paste two lines of code and hope it works.

10:37 PM
@Josh Again? Really?

wrong copy paste window <damn you ctrl tab>
blush

What can I say. I'm just ahead of all of you!
Gotta stay on your toes to keep up with me @MichaelMrozek

lmao

Also, the Tunes room is underused

10:40 PM
So when did meta links get update to say main instead of parent? Where's the MSO on that?

@Josh Bravo:

ROFLMAO

@drachenstern It was in the last couple days; the feature-request for it just got marked completed today

@MichaelMrozek was it a desired change? I liked it the other day :(

People thought "parent" was confusing

10:41 PM
intriguing

Q: SE 2.0 UI: Jargon in the interface. Getting rid of "parent".

OcaasiI'm continuing my collection of minor UI tirades. Today's rant: getting rid of "Parent". Parent is the name for the core Q&A side of StackExchanges sites. (It's the alternate of "meta"). "Parent" suggests a superior. "Parent" is a coding term about inheritance hierarchies. "Parent" is n...

@Josh I tuned the room up (:

@RebeccaChernoff - Have you had time to work on iOS development?

not lately

Ok
I'm trying to localize a settings panel.

Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug, or simply the stink bug, is an insect in the family Pentatomidae, and is native to China Mainland. It was accidentally introduced into the United States, with the first specimen being collected in September 1998. The brown stink bug is considered to be an agricultural pest. Information The adults are approximately ⅝ inch long and the underside is white or pale tan, sometimes with gray or black markings. The legs are brown with faint white banding. I wonder how much would @PopularDemand hate me for titling a question "The StackExchange™ AttentionCathalizer TwitteringFeedotron™ should check a question status before twitteriring it."

Euphoria (, from Ancient Greek ', "well", and '. "to bear") is medically recognized as a mental and emotional state defined as a profound sense of well-being. Technically, euphoria is an affect, but the term is often colloquially used to define emotion as an intense state of happiness combined with an overwhelming sense of contentment. The word derives from Greek , "power of enduring easily, fertility". Euphoria is generally considered to be an exaggerated physical and psychological state, sometimes induced by the use of psychoactive drugs and not typically achieved during the normal co...

Ok. Time to enjoy the ride.

Q: Migrate questions from meta stackexchange sites to meta.stackoverflow.com

SensefulSeveral of the questions on the meta site of WebApps are about the stackexchange engine itself. There should be a way to migrate those questions to a different meta site. I believe Robert said that those questions should be on meta.stackoverflow.com. Otherwise that meta site will become a mess, ...

Damn wrong room.

@ChrisF Thanks, flagged status-completed

Ooo - meaningless numbers lining up. I'm guessing that was the same day.

The same moment too :)

@badp That's kind of amazing

If Dropbox syncs file dates too, it was made Sep 13th at 8pm. It's kinda sad to notice that since then my MSO rep climbed to 7,797, my Gaming rep climbed to 7,698 and my SO rep reached 2,524.

I'm at 33,666 on SO at the moment (no pic though)

I take pride in never breaking the rep cap on Gaming however. Not a single reps lost to the cap!

11:39 PM
@badp That's a pretty weird thing to take pride in :). "Let it be known that I don't put in a shred of effort without some sort of reward"

@MichaelMrozek Oh, I do put the effort; I just delay it if needed to after midnight UTC :P
or stop accepting reputation from (= community wiki) exploding but basic posts.

@badp your stack does not overflow.

> Unhandled Exception: StackExactlyFilledException

@Shog9 rather, Stack Overflow was lost due to a stack overflow. That's quite Meta indeed.

That reminds me... Need to make a feature request involving "guard pages" for the rep cap.

> Keanu Reeves Says "Matrix 4" and "5" are Coming worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=20424#ixzz1C02nMtxn

@DanGrossman uh, didn't matrix 3 kind of resolve things?

> The Architect: Denial is the most predictable of all human responses. But, rest assured, this will be the sixth time we have destroyed it, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it.
He's already the sixth Neo, there's an infinite number of possible sequels!
> The function of the One is now to return to the source, allowing a temporary dissemination of the code you carry, reinserting the prime program. After which you will be required to select from the matrix 23 individuals, 16 female, 7 male, to rebuild Zion. Failure to comply with this process will result in a cataclysmic system crash killing everyone connected to the matrix, which coupled with the extermination of Zion will ultimately result in the extinction of the entire human race.

@Zypher didn't he tho? Just by a more circuitous route?

So they reneg on their promise of peace and Neo magically returns to save Zion again

11:55 PM
Additionally, can't it be said that the Matrix is a world within a world, within a world? Wouldn't that explain his abilities outside the matrix that he had no sense having?
@DanGrossman that was always the case
cf six Neo's

so we start with keanu as a hacker, tyring to find his way in the world, not really feeling like he belonged?
