12:04 AM
Josh have you left?
Picture this:

I have not

                                               DDL
        -------------------------------------------
          this is a flash window here
        >> floating CSS <<
          this is a flash window here
        -------------------------------------------
the floating css disappears
how do I push the flash down, as it were, under the z of the css?

do not rely on the z-order of flash stuff. Only really works on Windows.

Ok but how do I put a CSS floating element over the flash?

two flash windows, or one?

12:08 AM
one flash window
just wanted to illustrate the size of the window

ok
I'm not sure I understand though
@badp it works if the flash is wmode=transparent

I want to CSS float a div over a flash object

OK

I want to have a DDL above the flash that drops down over the flash

make sure the flash doesn't redraw

12:10 AM
In case you can't tell this is my coworkers problem, not mine, as I would never resort to using flash but I have to use what I have to use
how do I enforce that?

by editing the source of it :-)
if the flash redraws it will cover everything
regardless of z-index

Can I make you stab the monitor now? It's FusionCharts if I'm not mistaken ...

LOL
So I take it you don't have control over the ActionScript source...

@Josh oh rly?

I do not, no

12:11 AM
@badp no, I just realized what's happening

it's generated code

I was only partly correct @radp

even on Youtube flash goes on top of everything on Linux

when it redraws
but our app successfully orders Flash applets using zIndex
however, we stop redrawing when we know the flash will be behind something

but you have to stop that in the actionscript source right?

12:12 AM
@drachenstern you could try hiding the flash when you show the popup...
@drachenstern yeah :-(
We have JS tell the Flash to stop doing stuff

nah it's a chart obviously

well, yeah...
does the popup start visible, and then go away?
or is it like, see the chart, click a button and the popup appears, do some stuff with the popup and close it?
if it's the later, you could hide the flash and just show the popup. unless the popup is like a legend for the chart or something...

see the chart, click the drop down list
no popups

oh. drop down list. RIGHT

they want to hover a label over the chart
if it were a div popup I would hide the chart

12:15 AM
I'm with you now and that's a major, major, major pain in the ASS
to which I have no good solution
wait. I might
you could try:

OK. Who's messing with me?
@RebeccaChernoff!!!!!!! >:o
GIVE ME BACK MY CHAT MESSAGE BOX!

wahoo, laundry time

Note the lack of way for me to reply to @drachenstern!
@drachenstern: document.getElementById('flashID).PausePlay();

Hahahah

Safari and Chrome, by the way
@TimStone I think it's Jeff trying to stop me from becoming the #1 chat user :-(

12:20 AM
oy

@JoshsSocks He's just trying to save you from yourself!

Or it's @RebeccaChernoff telling me it's dinnertime!
@badp sigh

They suspended all people who have flags as gravatars? That seems extreme :o

hides

@TimStone I think this was indeed it then!
@badp thank you for saving me from myself

12:22 AM
@JoshsSocks Thank you for helping you help us help you help you all.

Mods can only suspend for 1 hour? Who started that rumor?

A mod that didn't want to be blamed for suspending someone for two hours?

@MichaelMrozek CRoss about chat suspensions (as a minimum duration, not as a maximum)

Ah
I would think it probably takes decimals, but I don't want to suspend someone to find out
Unless I can manage to frame someone else for it

@TimStone What?

12:24 AM
@MichaelMrozek you don't want to suspend somebody else you mean :-)

@MichaelMrozek When can't you? You must be getting old. I'll be leaving your lawn, now.

I consider @Josh's gravatar a flag :P

Who's suspended?

8 mins ago, by Josh's Socks
user image
They took away his right to speak!

did not suspend @Josh, but ponders suspending @JoshsSocks for evading a suspension. (;

12:28 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Does it count as evading if the socks are a different personality?

Why can't I be done this code? :(

@TimStone Because you're in Soviet Russia.
or, more accurately, Soviet Russia is in YOU!

Ah, that seems likely.

</meta-pun-of-the-day>

12:40 AM
'Ello @KevinMontrose

That reminds me that I should eat soon..

1:02 AM
@JoshsSocks We've been discussing the relative merits of multiple attack vectors, thanks for the tip
@Josh Object #<an HTMLEmbedElement> has no method 'PausePlay'

1:23 AM
Ok, I feel like shit, I'm feeling worse as the day goes on, I'm out ... see you guys after I walk my mutts

yeah, I hear that
feel better

feeling sick

I am just getting over being sick...

1:45 AM
'Ello...multiple people

@TimStone Hi, I'm Yi Jiang. And this is my clone, Yi Jiang #2. And this is his clone, Yi Jiang #3...

Hi

@YiJiang Nice to meet all of you ;)

I'm Yi Jiang #8

I'm Yi Jiang #474341
(I came late to the cloning party)

1:48 AM
I thought I was late.
feeling slightly better after dinner
heads for a tea
After all that porting, there's MORE code to write.

Wow, I just opened my resume from 2007 when i started this current job. Good god is it old...

2:17 AM
@YiJiang @TimStone pretty happy with my changes to the diff for pending edits ... see: stackoverflow.com/questions/1462584/… for an example ... still needs a bit of work but much better

I CAN SPEAK AGAIN!!!!!

@Josh Eh... you got flagged?

Apparently so!
2 hours ago, by Josh's Socks
user image
I blame @radp
brb

@waffles I like it. :) It's kind of hard to see what was removed down by the HTML there, I see red lines, but only barely. Also, the big red border around the whole thing is a bit distracting, but that's the general popup's fault, so :P

big red border?

2:21 AM
@TimStone I agree about that red border, its a tad aggressive
its our standard pop-over dialog

Wohoo! SxS source comparison!
Unfortunately it's missing jQuery :P

Yeah

What are you looking at? |:

And of course, also no del and ins to show for there... hmmm

Oh, I clicked history lol

2:22 AM
it has an addition and removal
so easy to tell from the diff what happened
and Jeff doubted me :)

The Side-by-side view still needs some work though

yeah ... its very ghetto for now

(I prefer just going straight there if you would add the ins and del, far better than looking at inline diff)

@YiJiang depends for what ... when fixing a few typos the inline diff is fine

(As a matter of fact, if it comes out, I would probably use an userscript to load that page with ajax to replace the original diff :P)

2:25 AM
Heh.

HOLY FREAK!!!!
calms down

Can I use SO to have people talk me out of using sketchy code which works?

iOS has built in support for Hebrew calendars.
OMG OMG OMG
@moot. I was using sketchy code that I thought worked. I ended up having to port a library to get it to work.
In fact I'm still porting.

@Moshe That's part of my issue. I already thought it worked how it was before, but it really didn't.

Same Here. Dont use your sketchy code.

2:29 AM
But it's sooooo tempting.

DONT. You will regret it yesterday.

I need a Fluent NHibernate expert's opinion on how sketchy it actually is.

Yes, I said yesterday.

lol

@mootinator Code review Stack Exchange is in private beta

2:30 AM
It's that important to avoid sketchy code.
@yijiang #3 - really? Sounds awesome!

@YiJiang Ah, but I have specific reasons to believe it's sketchy.

So ask on SO.

I will.

I'll probably think better of it and wonder why I didn't avoid it YESTERDAY, TOMORROW.

2:32 AM
WTF? Where did that previous message of mine come from? O_o
@waffles I think background colour on the deletes helps too, but maybe that's just me.

HELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLOHELLO

TROLOLOLOLOLOLOLO

2:50 AM
OHNO
@Moshe is gone. Now who will deter me from bad ideas. :(

Where do you go to approve edits?

Do you have to be allowed to edit to approve edits?

@TylerChacha They are inline - you see it when someone has edited, the edit button becomes edit (1), like the close button

3:07 AM
is secretly hoping for something he dare not mention here.

baaaaaaaacon

has bacon in the fridge

more baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacon
bacon-wrapped bacon fried in bacon grease with a side of extra-crispy bacon

3:24 AM
I'm here @moot.

^_^

Why is iOS generating EXC_BAD_ACCESS when using 'floor(someNumber)'?

someNumber is a pointer. And it is also 0.
Which is another way of saying. iOS? Never touched it.
I just like to listen to myself talk.

Is it tacky to post on SO as code in a question?

@Moshe Yes. It's impolite - if you can't do it now, wait a bit.
It's not that long a piece of code, surely you can type it out?

3:33 AM
Why is it a photo, exactly?

@drachenstern you still here?

vaguely

Sorry, had to make a late night call to the CEO :-/

It's a photo because I can't access the net on my lapptop now.

still need help with the flash @drachenstern?

3:36 AM
@Moshe You need a USB key :)

@yijiang And it's objective-c. I wouldnt even type it on a computer if not for autocomplete.

maybe tomorrow, not tonight

OK sure thing
I'm pretty tired anyway :-)

I'm pretty sick, debating taking a pain pill and going to bed or trying to suck down soup

Oh, and by the way guys, I've updated the election monitor to work with SU and SF too

3:38 AM
Nice @Yij.

@YiJiang Hooray. Now I can scrutinize people I don't know in style.

@waffles sorry I was AFK, couldn't respond. But I love what you did, looks awesome

@mootinator But of course!

@drachenstern oh no! I hope you feel better Cole!

danke

3:39 AM
Get lots of rest!

bah, rest is for the weak ..
if I didn't feel like shit when I laid down I would ..

those who are sick and don't rest get weak...
@drachenstern UG :-(

@Josh the warm wishes do help ;)

It's not much but sometimes it helps to know total strangers on the internet are cheering for you

@Josh Indeed ;)

3:42 AM
May a squadron of beautiful vaginas find their way to your crotch by day's end!

BAHAHAHAHAHA

How intriguing

@Moshe cover your eyes
I am tempted to flag that as offensive if for no other reason than I'm still bitter that my speaking privileges were revoked earlier today for no good reason!

Q: What's wrong here? (EXC_BAD_ACCESS)

MosheMy app crashes during when it tries to round some numbers down. What could e the problem? The debugger shows the first line causes EXC_BAD_ACCESS. - (NSInteger) hebrewCalanderEndDay:(NSInteger)year{ NSInteger monthsElapsed = [[NSNumber numberWithLongLong:floor((235*year-234)/19.0)]integerValue]...

Oh man, I messed up the edits again!
Thank you @Josh.

3:49 AM
Sure :-)
I have been on an editing kick recently XD

I guess floor() is not the preferred way to do things in iOS. Strange.

I am very confused as to why this would puke like it is...
It really doesn't die if you remove the floor?

I didnt try. Let me see. Good
Point.

I can't believe I've never seen this before

Loading stack frames now.

3:56 AM
@YiJiang That's pretty hot

@Tim huh?

WTF?
Sorry

It's not floor()

@Moshe Well it's beyond me, I have done nezt to no ObjC :-(
I upvoted for what's that's worth... GO VOTING RING!!!!

Oh. I'm an idiot. Testing...

3:59 AM
Now, I go watch the Daily Show and then head to bed. Goodnight everyone!

@Josh wait.

@Moshe ...waiting for it...

Did somebody say voting ring?

Floor returns a double.

desperately tries to trigger some heuristics.

4:01 AM
Still not fixed, waiting for stack frames.
69%...
@Josh ugh.
Crashing on 'tiny_malloc_from_free_list'.
No clue...

Sorry, no clue here either
To me it looks like you're working with arrays which you're clearly not :-( Sorry

Ok thanks. Gonna go see if @JacobRelkin has any ideas.

Good luck!

Ah haha. ObjC uses brackets for methods.

EXC_BAD_ACCESS means you've messed up your memory somewhere, probably by not allocating something correctly.

4:04 AM
Not arrays. Heh. I see why you might think that. Gnite!
@Tim it would seem so. Not sure how though.
What's the proper way to convert a double to an integer in C?

int myInt = (int)myDouble;

attempts to answer a question about a framework he hasn't touched in three years.

looks at the code

Goes to try it...

Ew, yeah, just type-cast the part inside of floor()

4:08 AM
why would you typecast a double inside a floor to an int?

Inside? As in floor((NSInteger)....);?

You don't need floor at all?

typecast a double to an int should be equivalent to a floor tho, since it truncates everything after the decimal

Right

Let me see.

4:09 AM
Sorry, I'm playing Minecraft :P
The point was you can remove like 75% of the code
NSInteger is just a typedef of long anyway, so keep that in mind.

Still crashing. Long or int?

If I remember correctly, long, but casting it to an int doesn't make any difference.

Ah, makes sense. Still crashing...

On the same line?

Weird. Now the stack stops at the call to that method.
I removed the NSnumber bit and then replaced floor with a cast to NSInteger.

4:16 AM
What does the whole line look like now / what are you passing to the function to begin with?

Can I upload images? Can't type code on iPhone.

In chat? Yeah, go ahead.

Ok posting to twitter then will link to them.
Both functions in one photo.
@Tim - posted.

What does it mean when Twitter says "Older tweets are temporarily unavailable."

Dunno. Know c, @YiJiang?

4:25 AM
@YiJiang that they don't know the meaning of temporarily

That their databases are either not responding on time or that the data stores are offline

@Moshe Not really, no.
@RebeccaChernoff Hahaha

@YiJiang Their databases aren't webscale.

So it's not a transient error, then?

@YiJiang it should be

4:26 AM
@Moshe So where does the exception happen now?

@TimStone yeah, cos that's a complaint I would lodge on twitter

I...wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

ok people, stick a fork in me ...

@drachenstern ;)

WheN hebrewCalanderEndDay is called.
The first time.

4:28 AM
And if you comment out that line, does it fail on the next one?

I'm kicking myself. I think these calculations can be rewritten in using ObjCs NSCalendar.
Let me see...
Can't comment it out.
Breaks the rest of the function.

...Right, just assign the variable you assign the return value to to 1 or something on the line above.

⌛ is okay on Windows, right?
(The unicode symbol, I mean)

What is it?
(I can see it, I just can't make out what it is)

Hourglass

4:35 AM
Ah, yeah

@Tim that method returns when commented out.

So both the second and third methods don't throw an exception, only the first?

No they do.
When all three are commented out it returns.

Oh
What calls the function which calls the three other functions?

Erm.

4:40 AM
meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/41976/… was the best question, ever. lol

Oh checking @Tim.

What possesses someone with 400 rep to offer a 200 bounty on a simple question with valid answers without explaining why they haven't accepted any of them?

@mootinator Cocaine?

hmmm

4:46 AM
@Tim I might be able to replace that code actually.

@Tim. Ugh I give up for now. I obviously have no idea how to use NSIntegers...

Why yes, this is 4chan, isn't it?
Also, unicorns.

Hey no Cocaine, I'm on iPhone. Apple would disapprove.

Q: are there any websites where I can just download images for menus, icons, graphics for web pages etc, w/o having to reference the author

daveBasically with all the free website images, menu and button icons we have to reference the original source in our web page. Any website that offers them and we can use them freely w/o having to reference anything or anyone?

@waffles new feature seeks to embarrass me even more than I already embarrass myself! :-)

@Josh, @Tim -!! Good news.

Do tell, before I fall asleep :-)

The calendar stuff I was doing can be handled by iOS and the NSCalendar class. No more crazy constants or broken conversion methods!
Yay!
Mighty good hot chocolate

Yep

OK. sleepytime for me. Goodnight @Moshe!

Kind of. :P

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

@Jin Damn... even I'm not that dedicated

Heheh, nice.
@YiJiang Can we get a loader spinner? ;)

@TimStone I've got a loading sequence almost ready. Just need to flip the switch and do a bit of testing
<div id="loading">
	<h2>Reticulating Splines</h2>
	<ul>
		<li id="load-init">Loading elections page using YQL</li>
		<li id="load-profile">Loading user profile on main site<li>

		<li id="load-badge">Loading badge information</li>
		<li id="load-meta">Loading Meta profiles</li>
		<li id="load-activity">Loading user activity</li>
	</ul>
</div>

Honestly, I'm pretty impressed with that page.

Honestly, it won't load or show signs of
Loading on iPhone 4
prays that the code works...
Well, didn't crash.
