"Yes, you can spawn processes by using the [os.popen][1] function."

Give in to the feeling, @badp
let it flow over you

woah I look back in here from my code and EVERYONE IS TYPING IN ALL CAPS, BOLD TEXT!!!
CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG???????

AND IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT!

@Shog9 Also the point of PHPBB < SO is that answers are sorted by accuracy, not time; edits are not

DON'T WE HAVE A ROOM FOR THIS SORT OF THING ???

12:01 AM
@drachenstern no because it's not all caps

@badp ahhh but you can change that, that's the default

@badp comments are time-ordered by default

ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS MAKE STACKOVERFLOW A BETTER PLACE!!!!!

@Josh me too!

now let's all switch to italics, all lowercase!

12:01 AM
@Shog9 yes, upvotes make a great job of bringing those out

@waffles too

@badp i know, @Shog9 did too i'm sure. i'm not angry at anyone!

> @badp: ok, so you're talking about an edit that would make the answer incorrect

@badp Only if someone reads them. Which is a bit hit & miss if it's the 6th comment

what are you replying to here?

12:03 AM
@Shog9 I do enjoy a good discussion :-)

@badp I got the idea that you were implying that a subprocess recommendation would be invalid since it wouldn't work in Python 2

@Shog9 I understand and agree that edits help, just they are not the end all be all solution. If the question subject becomes completely irrelevant, e.g., you shouldn't edit, you should close as too localized.
@Shog9 um, whoops, not what I meant

@badp Sure. I mean, if Python disappears tomorrow, there's no point in updating all the Q&A to note that. They are what they are.

@Shog9 people may read the question and think Python is still alive and kicking

But, assuming folks looking for help spawning processes are still gonna be finding the old Q&A for a while, it makes sense to give them some good advice

12:05 AM
sticking a blockquote h1 in it saying that NO IT IS NOT isn't going to help that

@badp That's been a problem for VB for 10 years. It's bigger than SO...

(yes, I've advocated for the blockquote h1)
11
A: How should we deal with out of date questions/answers?

badp If the question still makes sense after the patch, edit this into the answers. If the question no longer makes sense after the patch, edit this into the question. Warning! This was valid for version foo.bar of the game. Patch spam has however changed the way eggs and bacon frooble. ...

Ultimately, the goal of editing an answer is to take an answer that's already good and make it BETTER

I don't think it makes sense anymore
@Shog9 yes, that's much more than information rot
that's my point, editing and information rot have just that small intersection
editing is much more than information rot management
information rot management is much more than editing

@badp Well, ok, if you have an answer that makes absolutely no sense due to rot, then updating it probably doesn't pay...
UNLESS IT IS ACCEPTED

12:08 AM
THEN REPS MUST BE RECLAIMED
FOR WEBLOG.

Why?
for alchemy
for God and country
(new best reason for editing? Getting rid of the S at the end of "Reps")

If I get mod on Gaming I'll rename the boring Community user to something more exciting (and cause ~500 test cases to fail)
(Don't vote for me! Vote for Grace!)

ZOMBIE

@badp Gaming is holding elections too??

@Josh Not yet, but it should be soon.

12:11 AM
@Josh We were supposed to, apparently, then this stupid trilogy thing popped out of nowhere and cut in line.

Cool
LOL
@badp did they ever change the 500 Server Error page? :-)

@badp They are the hidden boss. They must be defeated.

(how can I create a server error on SE sites? Don't some searches trigger it?)

@TimStone is this a normal construct around you?

Q: Central Pennsylvanian English speakers: what are the limitations on the "needs washed" construction?

KosmonautIn the Central Pennsylvania dialect of English (and possibly elsewhere), the following construction is possible: This car needs washed. (=needs to be washed) The room needs cleaned. (=needs to be cleaned) It appears that, if a verb like needs is followed by a passive construction in...

I have a client who said that all the time!!!

12:13 AM
I definitely do not live in Central PA

@TimStone Reminds me of the opener for The Guild, Season 3

"This needs moved 10px right"
I wanted to SMACK HIM
He was from Utah

I'm in southeast PA, and I've never heard of that

@drachenstern wow, is it that region specific?

@TimStone the construct.

12:13 AM
I've certainly seen the "needs verbed" construction

@drachenstern hmm, I thought that was a southwest thing. My wife says that. Except, it's "Needs warshed"

@Shog9 yeah the r thing is annoying
and that's a country thing

@drachenstern Well, right...but no, I don't think so...

@Shog9 Get peaceplane

I remember in middle school I wanted to do a paper on Har-why-yah where my grandmother went to vacation. I argued and argued with my teacher on that one

12:14 AM
</bad-pun-of-the-day>

Though my former room mate's ex-girlfriend used to say "We need to do wash" when she was referring to laundry....ugh.

wash - noun - a quantity of clothes, linens, etc., washed, or to be washed, at one time: a heavy wash.

wouldn't that make it "do the wash" though?

That's what I've always thought.

I thought it was do the warsh

12:25 AM
"reservoy" - now that one really bugs me.

wth is a reservoy

I'm going to risk an answer to my own question

reservoir I would think
@Josh what question?

Q: Is everyone in favor of the new "everyone can edit" idea? Is this really such a good idea?

JoshAs originally requested here and described in Diff is Hard, Let's Go Shopping!: [The team is] planning to open the floodgates and allow everybody to submit content edits on posts Am I the only one who sees this undesirable? In fact, the more I think about it the more I think it has the pos...

Before I post, I'm reading @waffles answer which is authoritative and very informative, answers some parts of the question nobody else did

Because he's the only one that can?

Fascinating... I get notification of comment replies on nominations in the "Recent Activity" list, but not the SE drop-down. And there's no clickable link even in RA...

@drachenstern Yes :-)
That's what I meant, doing too much at once as usual

@Shog9 interesting
@CodingGorilla ~ See why I told you to post that question there? You need to post more questions like that ;)

@Josh Yes, good to see some clarification on how they're rolling this out. Limited availability tests FTW!

12:37 AM
agreed
Thoughts @Shog9?

A: Is everyone in favor of the new "everyone can edit" idea? Is this really such a good idea?

JoshI'm going to throw out a possible solution to some of the problems I see, having read some of the discussion in chat and the very insightful comments and answers here. I think Fabian made a great point: It gets pretty annoying when you are used to that power and visit a different SE site and ...

(and everyone else of course :-)

@Josh Too late; clearly @Shog9 is the only one you care about

@Josh I'd rather just down-vote you now and read it later.

@Shog9 and that is your right!
@MichaelMrozek LOL. I would love to hear your opinions on the floodgates being opened

way to knock Josh's answer off the top of the "Active" list, @badp
I just wanna add, here, where it'll never be remembered, that lengthy code samples in comments are utterly maddening.

Hiya

Hey @Moshe

Waiting for @Zypher to get off the train and report.

@Moshe your last name isn't vardi, right?

No.

No that was a license plate.

Chicken fried bacon consists of bacon strips dredged in batter and deep fried, like chicken fried steak. It is an American dish that was introduced in Texas in the early 1990s. Frank Sodolak of Sodolak's Original Country Inn in Snook, Texas, is credited as having invented the food. Chicken fried bacon has been gaining in popularity as it is featured in popular YouTube videos, a book of Texas curiosities, and an increasing number of restaurant menus. It is usually served as an appetizer with a white "country" or cream gravy for dipping and sauce. Notoriety Sodolak's dish acquired enough...

@DanGrossman Wow... that is, heh

@moshe we were discussing this the other day and I meant to forward it to you stackapps.com

> "They've taken fat, they've double-coated it in fat, they've fried it in more fat, and then they've served it with a side order of fat." Jane Hurley, senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington, D.C., stated she's "never heard of anything worse."

1:03 AM
And yet it looks perfectly delicious

@drach - what? Stackapps?

@DanGrossman I'm sooooo hungry now
Time for... BACON!

@DanGrossman YUMMMM

It really doesn't seem like the healthiest thing on Earth...

That "good calories, bad calories" guy suggests eating lots of fat. More fat than anything else. He wouldn't like the carbs in the breading though.
Fried Coke is frozen Coca-Cola-flavored batter which is deep-fried and then topped with Coca-Cola syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar, and a cherry. It was introduced by inventor Abel Gonzales, Jr., at the 2006 State Fair of Texas, where it won the title of "Most Creative" in the second annual judged competition among food vendors. It proved very popular in Texas, selling 10,000 cups in the first two weeks. In 2009, Fried Coke was featured on the Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. @Zypher can't still be on the train... I wonder if my game is that close to the original...

Erm, it's a two hour train ride followed by a drive home.. :P

I think every colliding revision after mine made it worse...

@MichaelMrozek Rollback if you want, though I think it's just minor changes (the diff is too messy there)

@TimStone congrats on your [status-completed]
@YiJiang did you see the question I asked? :-)

1:21 AM
@MichaelMrozek revert again?

@Josh Yup

@YiJiang They are, the differences from mine were pretty inconsequential. Editing really needs a merge interface was my point

@TimStone that doesn't make sense. A train to a car?

@YiJiang Ok just making sure :-)

See, there, if you argue it well, people will support you :)

1:21 AM
@Moshe yes...
@YiJiang point taken :-D

@Josh yes what? I'm on iPhone don't have the reference thingy on mouseover.

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, but you were the only one to fix the damn "how to make it possible?" I was going to just roll it back to your revision, but it seems yet another person came along to fix it..
@Josh Heheh, yeah. That was a quick turn around, go Kevin! :)

@Moshe Yes, you can take a train to your car from where you drive home.I did it all the time when I lived in Newton and worked in Boston

@Moshe Yes. A train from NYC to somewhere in NJ, and he lives in PA.

Oh ok. Wow, that's some commute.

1:24 AM
why would he do that every day? he must own the home or have the kids in a very nice school system

@Zypher doesn't have kids. He raises Rovios instead

Heh, I used to walk 15 minutes to school. Talk about not appreciate what one has.

@drachenstern He's moving soon. You people should pay more attention! ;)

How does everyone know what @Zypher has and does? What do you know about me?

I know that you develop iOS applications and eat Matzah on Passover...

ha!

S1 please star that post from @drachenstern or add starring on mobile devices.
@drachenstern in all seriousness. I recognize that as a problem. What do you suggest to fix that?

@Moshe Starred.
@TimStone I am starting to cook dinner but will check in for the mysterious question :-)

1:30 AM
Thanks. I need to see that. can we get that pinned?

@Josh Hahah, alright, I'm a bit behind still, so don't feel obligated. :P

np :-)

@Moshe the same thing I do in the same situation. Recognize that I do it and count to twenty, then ask if I should still say it

@Moshe Didn't you just see it?

@RebeccaChernoff he's on an iOS device

1:31 AM
Not seeing the relevance...

"didn't you see it" ... iOS devices don't show everything that's pertinent all the time ...

Will b away for a bit.

The message starred doesn't depend on the parent message. It seems if you can read the message to ask for it to be starred, you've read the message...which is good enough.

Anyone know what "cholent" is?

@Moshe Wiki says it's a traditional Jewish dish

Yep.
What else does wikipedia say?

Cholent (Yiddish: טשאָלנט, tsholnt or tshoolnt) or Hamin () is a traditional Jewish stew simmered overnight, for 12 hours or more, and eaten for lunch on Shabbat (the Sabbath). Cholent was developed over the centuries to conform with Jewish religious laws that prohibit cooking on the Sabbath. The pot is brought to boil on Friday before the Sabbath begins, and kept on a blech or hotplate, or placed in a slow oven or electric slow cooker until the following day. There are many variations of the dish, which is standard in both the Ashkenazi and Sephardi kitchens. The basic ingredients of c...

@DanGrossman Urgh... (slap myself)

@Josh it's a Jewish food. Try it.

@Moshe I will!
I have had many, many Jewish foods but that's not one
Hmmm suddenly I'm hungry for Kugel
Kugel (; also kugl, pronounced ) is a baked Ashkenazi Jewish pudding or casserole, similar to a pie, most commonly made from egg noodles (Lokshen kugel) or potatoes, though at times made of zucchini, apples, spinach, broccoli, cranberry, or sweet potato. It is usually served as a side dish on Shabbat and Yom Tov. Etymology The name of the dish comes from the German Kugel meaning "sphere, globe, ball"; thus the Yiddish name likely originated as a reference to the round, puffed-up shape of the original dishes (compare to German Gugelhupf — a type of ring-shaped cake). Nowadays, however...

i was thinking the exact same thing

@Rebecca you're not in the path of that storm are you?
Headed to you @Tim by Friday
Eeee :/

@drachenstern Don't distract him. I won't be around to answer his questions much longer. He must work now! :-)

oh, more snow coming, great ;)

Haha

@Josh It's OK, I have more time to worry about it now, so I'll ask you tomorrow if I still have the question. :)
@drachenstern There's another storm coming?
Cool
Starting tomorrow night it looks like

2:45 AM
According to TWC

@Moshe sure i was still on the train ... maps.google.com/…
@Josh is 1/2 correct ... i'll leave which half up to the peanut gallery

@TimStone sounds good, I'm off for the night then. Catch you guys later!

See ya! Enjoy your evening.

@Zypher LOL

That reminds me: High speed railway link between Nanjing and Shanghai: maps.google.com/…
That's 300 km in only around an hour

2:57 AM
daaamn it would almost make it worth it if amtrack could do Philly -> NY in 30 mins

@TimStone thanks. Catch you later!

BREAKING #NEWS: Chinese President Hu Jintao Pays For #StateDinner While President Obama In Bathroom

@drachenstern Hahahahaha...

damn that's a lot

3:04 AM
Unfortunately not compared to the price of getting a ticket every day if I remember correctly, heh.

@TimStone How much is it, then?

@TimStone oy.

@Zypher - oh, ok. I assumed younger taking MTA Mass Transit. My mistake. How was the game?

it's about 140 coach class each way * 20 is about 2800

Just finished "night Seder"

3:06 AM
@Zypher Oh wow... Shanghai -> Nanjing is 150 RMB

good, got distracted by my neighbor so didn't play as much as i thouhg but what I played was fun ... fit pretty well ... reserving more opinion for after more play time :)
@YiJiang yes they compete more with the airlines than anythign else
the the fun part is they RENT thier rails to pretty much all the regional transit systems so they get paid that way too

I thought the railway shipping companies owned most of the lines? Amtrak turns a profit in only a handful of places in the country, if I recall right.

@Zypher 2 questions, if you don't mind.

nah Amtrak built amost all of the lines
but the second part is probably true, the proliferation of cars and air travel really hut them
@Moshe shoot

Did it feel fairly close to the original, considering iOS and the components of the SDK?
Did you play through a full game?

3:10 AM
oh yea felt right on to the original ... dind't get a chance to play thorugh a full game did about 15 days maybe 20

Great, thanks. It'll feel more fun once I add random events and achievements.

God, getting associated user info really is much harder than it should be with the API
To get the user's Meta account from the SO account, it's soapi/user/id -> stackauth/associated -> msoapi/user/id

@TimStone hmm ... looking for it ... but I'm fairly certain amtrak took over all the independents that built most of our rail system ... most notably the Pennsylvania railroad company

Well, Wikipedia says we were both right. :P
}} The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak , is a government-owned corporation that was organized on May 1, 1971, to provide intercity passenger train service in the United States. "Amtrak" is a portmanteau of the words "America" and "track". It is headquartered at Union Station in Washington, D.C. All of Amtrak's preferred stock is owned by the U.S. federal government. The members of its board of directors are appointed by the President of the United States and are subject to confirmation by the United States Senate. Common stock was issued in 1971 t...
Amtrak doesn't own the tracks in most of the country, but happens to own most of the tracks in the Northeast corridor.

Amtrak is state-owned and still charges so much?

3:15 AM
@YiJiang It's a state owned corp ... kinda like the the postal service, state supervised and subsidized might be a better term

@YiJiang Well, inefficiency and unpopularity is expensive. :P

Did I just edit some DOM so I could pay a terrible online store the wrong amount? Yes I did.

@TimStone Ha!
@mootinator Well, if their authentication system doesn't stop you, then they probably deserved it

That would be funnier if it weren't true.

@mootinator if they allow it to happen then who's to say it didn't happen that way?
Can they prove it didn't happen the way the transaction log shows?

3:17 AM
There's that old joke about Amazon in their early days used to giving you back credit if you entered in negative quantities

the funny part is w/ all the TSA crap it's probably faster to take the train from say Philly to Boston than fly

Additionally can I get the name of the company so I can ... ya know ... ;)

@drachenstern I did it as a matter of principle. I was trying to redeem a Groupon, but they had no way of redeeming it (without first authorizing the entire purchase, apparently).

@Zypher Yeah, but now that Southwest flies to Boston...so much win.
Well, I guess they flew to "about Boston" before, but they fly to Logan now, which is all I care about :P

last time i flew it was 2 hours ahead of time at the airport, 30 extra mins waiting on the tarmac 1 hour flight , 30 mins on tarmac,

3:19 AM
I'm not going to agree to pay an amount I didn't agree to pay, that's all :P

@TimStone shrugs i havn't paid for a flight out of pocket in about 5 years
haha what they fly into manchester?

Yeah, hahah

@drachenstern They actually had an "amount paid" field on the page where you review orders. I figured it must happen to them a lot.

@mootinator "I know the order total was "17.35" and that I paid "17.35" it's right here in the printout that I made from your site" ... "of course I always print things to PDF ... who doesn't?"

@drachenstern lol

3:23 AM
i don't even own a printer at home anymore

My printer is broken ):

Nor I

Well that's not totally true. The duplexer is broken.

I have some cheap wireless HP printer that I got with my laptop, heh.

The paper doesn't wrap around the duplexer tightly, so it jams. But never the first page. The first page always prints fine. Only the second page.
wtf |:

3:25 AM
I bought my printer so I could print business cards.
The Avery business card paper jams it every time
As a result, I wasn't able to rent it to myself and charge the fine people of Canada for it's use.

What's going on?

hmm speaking of which ... where is my other W-2 ... i wanna get depressed

@ircmaxell The usual :P

@ircmaxell in general? We decided to have a rantfest on hardware

My laptop crashes.
EVERY SO OFTEN!

3:28 AM
Oh yeah? Any type of hardware? Or some genera in specific?

@ircmaxell does it use drivers in any way shape or form?

Well, kinda I guess (Android cell phone)
I had to take my former Droid in for warranty work. They gave me a motorola citrus as a loaner
my god what an udder piece of garbage. They ripped out all of the google integration and added bing in its place (in a half assed way). They removed features (like distinctive notification ringtones for email accounts) and crippled other features. They turned a fully functional OS into a pile of garbage. Moto and Verizon should be put infront of a firing squad for it...

citrus? wtf is that?

@ircmaxell which handset?

tries to figure out what @ircmaxwell's barcode is

ahh
i'm trryyying to hold out for 4G
w/ a keyboard

I just broke down and got a Nexus S.
This thing freaking rocks. It's so fast and slick...

it looks like a piece of crap on that site

The only thing I have to admit I like about it (literally, the only) is the battery life. I got like 4 days on standby. Everything else is in the distinctly sucks category...

Can Nexus S work on ATT?
Why is my MacBook reporting 10:50 of remaining battery life?

3:42 AM
Lessee.... no features: check. Long battery life due to no features: check.

@drachenstern I was going to go with "Steve Jobs LIES!", but that works too.

No, AT&T is blocked...

Meh.
I am really considering turning in my iPhone 4 for an android. The battery is not great.
Anyone here German?

@Moshe balpha should be, don't think he's here though

I need some audio files to listen to learn the language.

3:45 AM
I have been using Android since before the G1 launched (I had a pre-release installed on another phone I had). I love it. And the latest ones are even better...

Ivo in the JavaScript room is, but he isn't here either

...wait for it...
That's strange, look at the time next to the battery...

@Moshe have you considered RosettaStone?

@drachenstern - Can't afford it now.
I might consider it, but only for a more practical language.
Maybe Spanish.

I don't recall asking you that question >.>

3:48 AM
does that mean 10:50PM perhaps?

Dude, German is like THE educated industrial language of the West

@ircmaxell - No, that's the battery time remaining.

hehehe

@drachenstern - I know but locally, there are many spanish speakers. German, not so much.
I just enjoy languages.
switches back to iPhone

That one even was a duplicate of one before it, heh.
Also, that one answer makes me sad.
It probably makes @badp sad too. Apparently the fact that he speaks Italian means he can never be outside of Italy.
