4:00 AM
new employees! new team meeting required!

is tempted to show up in NYC and demand good food

haha
if you can show up around 12:00 ... make it past building security, make it past the cops, then maybe

is going to have to renew his passport again soon or he won't be able to go to nyc.

needs to find his passport

4:02 AM
mfw you guys talk about food

I wish my passport was expiring, such a terrible photo..

a new one wouldn't be any better
id photos always suck

i intentionally try to look bad for them

it's cause of the scaling

@RebeccaChernoff I like the ten second delay that gave that burn enough time to really sink in ;)

4:04 AM
I don't shave for days ahead of time

that, and going hung over is always a plus

if they didn't scale it at height: 10%; width: 10% it would be good
who am I kidding, I don't shave for days at a time now

haha
... yeaaaaaa
actually i don't think i've shaved yet this year

I haven't
I leave that to my barber

haha, yea ... havn't gotten a hair cut in like 6 months ...

4:06 AM
anybody watching mythbusters green hornet ep?

nope too lazy to change tv channel
and i even have the app for that

Strangely enough, I don't have the TV on.

we're playing canasta so I'm not really able to watch the whole thing
but it's pretty good

@Zypher i havent shaved this year too because its Manuary

I just turned it on a couple minutes ago
@Reno it is? hmmm

4:08 AM
...Manuary?
oy.

I shaved the other day, apparently I'm the odd one out.

ha yea true

..and by other day, I guess it was yesterday.

i don't qualify for our competition cus i didn't start with a baby face

I didn't either
I've been keeping a beard for about 18 months now

4:10 AM
ah i've had a goatee for about ... 10 years now
i shave it every 2 or 3 years
and am scared of the reflection

Either my BitSet methods are flawed, or that's a wee bit of an optimization...

this is actually the first time im growing my facial hair :|
do you guys use a beard softener or something ?

@Reno once you get past the itchy stage it's all good
the the itchy stage is a BIAATTCCH

asdhaopshf it itsches like hell now

@RebeccaChernoff uhh what?

4:14 AM
nice password

reboots @RebeccaChernoff @radp-style

lol, it might've been! :p

frakkin' cat.

@Reno yea ... depends on how fast your beard grows how long that lasts

4:15 AM
Hahah, 'ello kitty!

@Zypher I know that feeling

Quick someone try to log into @RebeccaChernoff's mail

pfffffft

'Ello @Mana

Oh hey @Tim. How's it going?

4:16 AM
My password is ****

Fairly decent, yourself?

@mootinator that's not nice
or a very strong one

Yeah, pretty well! Spent like three hours studying Calculus while everyone around res gets wasted out of their minds. I don't feel like my time was wasted.

@Zypher It's full of symbols!

4:17 AM
no no you need one like mine ***************

Thirsty Thursdays? Heh

ahh those where the days

How do I make my password bold? All I get is this... ********

of course if i had done what @mana did ... i woulda had a much better gpa
hmm i think you need to wrap it in "**" like this: ****************

most semesters i didn't have class on fridays. worked out well.

4:19 AM
yea ... on a good day we would see one flake of snow claim no class tomorrow and party till 4am
... there was always class

oh man.

@Mana for reference that was the smart plan
what calculus?

One-var

that's important stuff

actually, the best was the semester i took glass blowing. wed nights from 10:30pm-1:30am, and then we'd drink until about 4am. luckily i didn't have class until 1pm on thursdays.

Jin
4:20 AM
you guys made me hungry, so i went got some snack

Jin, how kind of you to reveal Cooking's new skin.

although the best was when we took our friend out to a strip club for his 23rd birthday ... got home around 4am, then i met my gf at the time ar 5am for breakfast ... i had to turn in a final to my advisor at 8 am i sat outside the classroom starting at 7am fell asleep with my paper in my hand, my advisor walked by grabbed the papper kicked me awake and told me to go to my dorm and sleep it off

@RebeccaChernoff glass blowing huh?

@jin mmmmmm

what was the degree in again?

4:22 AM
<-- Shocked at the lack of a joke bacon.stackexchange.com proposal on area51.

@Zypher Hahahah, nice.. :P

BS and MS in Computer Science. Glass blowing fits in to that nicely don't you think?

I do

seems to yep

an MS? hmmm that just reminds me more that I'm behind ...

@drachenstern i've got an A.A.S and a B.A.

My favorite semester was the one where I had a 'props' class.

There's a professional studio in St. Louis. They teach a class each semester partnered with my uni. And you get to watch them make the actual stuff they sell, no noobs or anything like that teaching you.

@Zypher same here
but I have a dual minor :S

I made a box. Out of wood.

4:24 AM
Appl Math and EE

@drachenstern I'm short a MS too, if it makes you feel better. I didn't see the point unless I had a specialization, which I was too indecisive about, heh.

I hadn't originally planned on the MS. Didn't decide until a month before graduation actually. My school offers a 5 year BS/MS combo so I "switched" into that program.

@TimStone oh everyone I know that I still associate with from academia is either a uni prof or is in a PhD program

i'll eventually get an MS ... probably a systems/MBA mix ... but i need to wait long enough for them to not care about my undergrad GPA :)

and a lot of people want me to keep going, but I'm kinda stalled out on my specialty too
I feel like I need to pick something big for my PhD

4:26 AM
I want to get an MS in HCI eventually. Though I doubt I'll ever have time for that now.

Jin
@RebeccaChernoff i majored in computer engineering, minor in computer science

I keep looking at these problems other people are solving and going "too easy" and giving them solutions and they go write papers and get degrees :S ... I should stop doing that I've been told
Apparently I need to write the papers so I can get the degrees

I skipped a year and got my BS in Comp Sci done in three. I almost did double major in Physics, but I couldn't cram it in. :/

yes, take thier idea, don't give them a solution and get degree

@Zypher but their ideas are so dumb

4:27 AM
Then I technically had a math minor, but kind of forgot to declare it. >_>

@TimStone silly

@drachenstern The reason I didn't do an MS earlier is that I kept going to presentations, thinking boring and/or irrelevant and not wanting to waste my time.

NYU actually has an MS major i REALLY want to do ... not online and dind't want to move up there for a long time ... that problem is now solved soon

@RebeccaChernoff oh that's like cheating!

mwuahahaha

4:29 AM
@mootinator oh I love the presentations on the stuff I want to do, just no interesting problems ....
distributed computing, big systems

@drachenstern Yeah..heh.

remember that link from my buddy the other day showing the top and cpu dump from his term?
He's one of the ones I gave advice on how to rebuild his network to squeeze more performance

ja ... i remember being sad that it was only a screenshot and not hardware porn

he's doing reduced power consumption in datacenters
@Zypher I've worked with groups that have way more cpus than that on hand ... he's working on completely mobile cloud datacenters ... live migration of the cloud from one locale to another

4:31 AM
totally machine independent VMs

paperweight ^^

@RebeccaChernoff cool!
I'm jealous
I know a microscopic modicum of what goes into that

nice @drachenstern and @RebeccaChernoff

ahem plate...

@Zypher yeah but it's kinda dumb what I had to tell him ... you'll kinda laugh a bit
he was wanting to reduce components in his box, but still run VMs
these are headless compute nodes, they don't need a disk cos they run off hadoop
he was clueless what a ramdisk was

4:33 AM
hahah wow

this is a kid going for a CS PhD and smarter than most computer science guys I know
had NO idea
I explained how they work and how it would improve performance and remove the need for a disk on the box

Eh...
PhDs are overrated.

allocate 8GB RAM/CPU in a VM and load the images off a 'cast server

For instance. The person who worked on my project before me had one.

with compute nodes of 64GB/8 cores that's 8VMs floating on one box

4:34 AM
hmm this reminds me ... i need to research cluster enabled NTFS in windows 2008
do you know how HARD it is to find that in google

being served over fiber ... able to move those in minutes
@Zypher I can imagine
So where this guy's problem is neat, it's not really that hard ya know?

it's mostly a matter of proper image building (automatable) and proper VM design (infrastructure mostly) and then it's just scripting

Jin
Arlington 'n Topolsky going at it in comment section

who wants to get a PhD on that? What are you gonna do after 10 years?

4:37 AM
@drachenstern teach college?

however I keep getting pointed out that the trick is to get the PhD, then to worry about what to do after
@Zypher yeah yeah :p

My grandfather, a very successful engineer, believes people getting an MSc and/or PhD. before they have any real world experience in their field is complete BS. FWIW.

right now I just wanna write code ... I'll play with that in a few years, then I'll go in and write some papers, get into a PhD program, get my degree and then rewrite something somewhere
@mootinator I subscribe to that school of thought

Yeah...that whole writing papers thingadongdong... |:

@mootinator which is why I recognized that the guy needed to look at ramdisks right away

4:39 AM
nod

@RebeccaChernoff makes you kinda puke a little in your mouth up front doesn't it?

I've got it! become famous, and get an honorary PhD

so surprisingly (the wrap up to the story) after I explained to him the concept and how to do it and what the effect would be and generally a night over beers and napkins, he knew what to go look for and the next day found two groups that were doing more or less what he wanted and already had software toolkits that did the bulk of it

or 10

@Zypher I'm considering becoming JonSkeet v0.1 ;)

4:40 AM
@Zypher Someone who received one made a joke about that at our commencement, heh.

Jon Skeet is like "the one"

@drachenstern mmhmm ):

there cant be a Jon Skeet 0.1 or 1.1

@Reno meaning like "not as good but in the same vein"

found it odd finding a recommendation from someone at a local company on the back of Jon Skeet's book. Apparently I don't pay enough attention to the local dev community :/

I’m pleased to announce that we’re kicking off 2011 with some new blood on the team, starting with Nick Craver.

Nick will be working remotely for us from North Carolina.

Nick is an old friend of Jarrod Dixon, so he comes highly recommended. Jarrod always told me how great Nick was, and although I implicitly trust Jarrod’s opinion, I sort of waved him off with a yeah, yeah. But then this happened:

When you top the Stack Overflow reputation leagues for 2010, rest assured you now have my full and unfettered attention. …

^^ yes there can

@Zypher anyone notice after he started the javascript room DIED?

@drachenstern im kidding lol

@Reno ah, mkay

@drachenstern Well, not died...but I did start to wonder if they've gone and locked him in the basement and forced him to program all day long.

Stuck in mah bubble.

@TimStone normal occurrence when SO hires someone

@mootinator that's interesting

@Zypher Ah, phase two. After the microchipping.
takes notes

I hear it's a normal occurrence when anyone gets hired ... speaking of, who let @RebeccaChernoff out?

oh well this is part of her job :)

apparently not during the day ;)

4:46 AM
special chip

@drachenstern She just silently observes then.

there are some ... issues that need to be worked out
but we've only lost like 3 or 4 monkeys in trials

poor monkeys

@RebeccaChernoff it's ok, you're not a monkey. They'll put a longer leash on you
I don't think they'll let you wander off like that, you shouldn't get lost

4:47 AM
I'm so glad Moshe isn't here to star all this

ha

sighs

@TimStone are you about to use your 20 star limit?

I'm not a compulsive starrer. :P

But can you reverse it?

what is it? a pig?

5:01 AM
looks back over at chat ...What the hell?

That's what I'm dying to know.

@TimStone I wouldn't suggest doing that...

Jin
i'm not sure if it displays correct on other OSes or not..

@RebeccaChernoff shakes head :P

Does Java have a KeyValuePair object besides a map?
(or other hash-like structure)

Nope
Well, at least I don't think so, what did you need it for specifically?

In C# there's a construct but it's really only valid if you're using a collection.
you would foreach key in collection, collection[key] = value
but it really doesn't make sense as a standalone object

comcast network is down here :/
illegally tethering my phone with pdanet

Ouch, that's no fun.
@drachenstern I guess that's like iterating over a map in Java (which is kind of annoying): for (Map.Entry<K, V> entry : map.entrySet()) entry.setValue(newValue);

turns on 4G radio

5:59 AM
something like that
@DanGrossman ouch
but how would you get K?
err, something like that
how do you find out the name of the entry? is that entry proper
trying to answer a question on dba.SE

@drachenstern entry.getKey()

ahhh

this is pretty lame for 4g

shit, it's better than what I have in my apartment

@drachenstern Just run a cable from work, no one will notice.

6:01 AM
biggest difference between 3G and 4G is the latency on the initial connection

@TimStone shit, I'm pretty sure my house is faster :S

+1 to the guy in my local bakery for the fresh cream bun - there's so much cream in there that it tastes like cake

new guy moved in a house across the street from my mom recently, asked her if he could run a cable from her house to his and pay half the cable bill ;x

@YiJiang Must resist urge to make a joke...

can I get a peer review?

A: What is a Key/Value store database?

drachensternAre you familiar with the concept of a Key/Value Pair? Presuming you're familiar with Java or C# this is in the language as a map/hash/datatable/KeyValuePair (the last is in the case of C#) The way it works is demonstrated in this little sample chart: Color Red Age 18 Size ...

@GeorgeMarian you can resist ;)

6:04 AM
@GeorgeMarian Good evening :P

@drachenstern Hinting at will tide me over. :)
@TimStone evenin'

Hey, what's so funny about fresh cream buns?

@YiJiang think about it ... a guy, filling donuts with cream ... batter ... you're going to make someone actually say it aren't you?

shakes fist at missing L

@drachenstern Erm... I must be dumb or something, but no, I still don't get it

6:10 AM
how to put this mildly ...

chuckles

@YiJiang There's some innuendo there, for which we'll blame @GeorgeMarian

do you know the euphemism for pearl necklace?
it would definitely be XXX

@drachenstern Erm... maybe it'll be better not to know

just imagine it would help the donut maker to have a playboy handy

6:12 AM
facepalms

which is sadder, that I found an image from google that should relay the concept or that I looked?

I'm...not sure what to answer to that.

I figured a picture is worth a thousand words might be of benefit here

:would toss in a vote for the Q:
In the Star Trek universe, the Q Continuum is an extradimensional plane of existence inhabited by a race of extremely powerful, hyper-intelligent beings known as the Q. They act indifferently to the affairs of the non-Q beings living in normal space, or in the many dimensions parallel to their own. They show a unique interest in the development of humanity and the progress displayed by mankind. The Q have appeared in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. One of the Q is known as Quinn to the Voyager crew. Overview The Q are a uni...

> They act indifferently to the affairs of the non-Q beings living in normal space, or in the many dimensions parallel to their own. They show a unique interest in the development of humanity and the progress displayed by mankind.
Somehow that's not contradictory?

I guess you could say the interest is unique because of said indifference to everyone else.

@radp are you talking about the ninja - pirate thingy ?
lol i was bored , sure you can :)

@Reno aye, I were

@RebeccaChernoff Say, since you can speak on official capacity now, when's the next round of F/OSS ads starting?

10:33 AM
@YiJiang Here's a speculation: not now. There was very little enthusiasm for round 2 and now there are 30 SEs to advertise for.

@radp Dammit... sigh. You're right about the lack of enthusiasm, of course, but what about the 30 SE sites?
They haven't deployed any ads at all to those sites, right?

@YiJiang I'm talking about the question ads appearing in SO

@radp Oh, right.

As Kevin mentioned in an answer on SA ad slots are only so many
however you can post your SO API based app/mod ads in on StackApps, like I have :)

Should I ask a question about it?
@radp Meh, that won't do at all, would it?

10:37 AM
@YiJiang I have 163 unique users for SO Live
so I guess it's not completely uneffective
Certainly more than I could reach via chat

Look at the spikes in traffic - the most recent one is because of the link from the blog

@YiJiang eh, SO Live is not nearly as useful :)
although I don't have any of your modifications installed

@radp Those are not installs, but page views, and probably not unique IP address views either

@YiJiang Don't they use the API at some point?

@radp Not at all, no

10:40 AM
aw, weird, how do you get stuff like user lists then?

The two main script, the chat mod and the se mod, both don't. The
@radp The /profile command uses the API, but without a key

Well, get a key and track users with that.

It's unlikely you'll go through anything more than a dozen request like that a day, so it's safe
@radp Meh, not everybody uses the /profile command anyway

Oh well.
Is there a list of features added/changed/removed/rchernified by the SE mod scripts?

Having it 'ping home' like that would be weird... there would probably be a better way of doing analytics
@radp The readme file should do, eh

10:44 AM
oh, I was merely blankly staring at the wiki last time I looked
/start to flag?
