Gaming has hit 2,000 questions!

@badp ::cheers::

while managing to beat SuperUser's closing ratio.

ARGH!!!! On 2009-04-22 I posted a SO question about an issue I was having... On 2009-05-09 I posted a comment to that question stating I had solved that issue. The issue has since returned, but I can't find the changes I made between those dates in my svn repo! Very, very frustrating

Discreetely delete your comment and edit the question.

@badp LOL
I must be doing something stupid because there's like 5 months of changes missing from my svn repo, lol
and that can't be reality

Yes, Chat works at school...

@Chacha102 Sweet!

Does it use port 80 only?

yes

We have most port blocked here and chat works fine

4:20 PM
\o/

We have every port blocked but 80

Hurrah for @Chacha102!

Now I can ignore teachers and keep in touch with the tech community

and never pass another exam again!
wooo!
Now I can be like all my colleagues who spend all the lessons playing PES.

not really

4:22 PM
I have fairly easy classes

Only discussing about META issues!

I do listen to course, but I usually correct the teacher during his presentation

That's like 300% more meta.

@Chacha102 (warning: may cause laughter)

Time for a contest. It's a well-known fact that all the best taverns follow a specific naming convention. "The Brass Lantern," "The Prancing Pony," "The Drunken Clam," "The Mended Drum,"... they're all "The [Descriptor] [Noun]." Unfortunately, the tavern we're in isn't so blessed. I hereby challenge you to name it!

@badp I found my missing subversion commits, yey!

ooh... number floating on top of a gravatar. That's new
Just popped in to ask for some opinion.

Now time for lunch, food will help me analyze which one fixed the problem, why it did so, and how to fix the problem again :-)

Q: jQuery plugins abuse

SrikarI am trying to learn jQuery & front-end technologies in general. Right now my point of focus is jQuery. The framework has some really awesome plugins. But at what point does one consider the need for considering a plugin an abuse (of the framework)? For example I understand that trying to g...

What of?

The Ubiquitous Unicorn

@PopularDemand We should post a contest for names on Meta

@badp see my comment, it's the first

So, @Chacha, we need you to pick a winner. Enjoy, uh, scanning the last four days of archives for replies.

The Udderless Unicorn

4:25 PM
Ok

Right, still working on my essay, just had to say hi to @Chacha since I noticed his icon, see yinz.

"The Freehand-Circled Unicorn. Serving Waffles Since Six or Eight Weeks."

I'll compose a list of names this weekend
and pick one
And You'll know the winner when you can't find the channel named "The Tavern (General)"
So star this channel now!

@PopularDemand That's because you should've created a meta channel to discuss the issue!

@PopularDemand Hey now...

And let me just say that I understand why twitterers invented (or stole) hashtags now.
@JoePhillips Are you saying you haven't starred this room?
Witch! He's a witch! Get 'im!

@JoePhillips Flagg'd!

@PopularDemand I've starred it....... 43 seconds ago! #oops
damnit. Why can't I edit that? I meant to type starred not started

More than two minutes since you posted I would assume

@JoePhillips Too much time has passed. Flag for mod attention if it really irks you.

4:38 PM
There you go mods... have your hayday

Interesting, I got a beep on that edit (I'm currently set to "Sound notifications when mentioned").

@JoePhillips hmm okay, this time... but we're not your typo police :)

@AndyEshead I've found a good match for considering this a duplicate

@PopularDemand yes, that posts does mention you

eh, uh, @balpha... Josh used "it's" instead of "its" in two posts a few pages back, would you please take care of that?
@AndyE'shead wut? Removed? WHAT DID YOU SAY?!

4:44 PM
I would have expected it to not re-fire since the previous revision already produced a beep. But I can see where that would be useful if someone edits in a "not" or something. Also I guess it would take more code to keep track of that.

@PopularDemand precisely right; both points

@Shog9 I said "Go on..." because my brain took a while to process what I'd read properly. It soon caught up :-) I agree with you, but I've voted to close with the link I mentioned in my comment, purely so there are two dupes in the list if it gets closed.

I like how this chat keeps track of what times people are active

@balpha, by the way, I'm a fan of the update to the font for the "number of replies" icon at top right of the gravatar.

If I want to know when to cause havoc I can just look at @balpha's usage

4:47 PM
@AndyEshead that's cool

Is there a name for that icon? Those were a lot of words. Awkward, twisty words.

Anyone else getting a couple of "Stack Overflow is currently offline for maintenance" pages every now and then. A refresh is fixing it, it's happened twice now though.

the boss is here -- hey @Chacha102, what goodnesses will you offer during the happy hour?

@AndyEshead no, but I did now that you said something. Thanks for jinxing the site, Andy

@balpha The bar is completely open. We got all sorts of imported stuff in there...

I'm in Germany already... we don't need to import german beer

Ok, what do you want then?
I have Canadian beer, but it tastes a lot like Maple Syrup..

Q: Furniture for programmers

Nathan TaylorWhat are some good furniture offerings for those of us that sit around all day every day? I'm interested in chairs, desks, etc... Bonus points for posting images. P.S. Is the GeekDesk really as great as Stack Overflow would have us believe? That's a lot of cheddar for an adjustable table.

It's such a tease for a site that I should definitely be a member on.

There we go.
Not the question I was thinking about but...

@badp, huzzah!

@Shog9 my bad :-)

@rchern Go figure, that tool isn't available in that area. (I'm still accepting your answer as I didn't specify where the problem was and since I don't really care too much about it -- if I did I would be working on OpenStreetMap.)

How does ANYONE not think the terminology involved here is completely ridiculous:

Q: Is Terracotta used professionally?

ZenzenToday at work I had a discussion with my co-workers and my boss about stateless/stateful beans (we just finished a project using JSF, it was the first time anyone at this company did something JSF related) and my boss said that he doesn't really like Session scoped beans (or even conversation/Kee...

I can't read it without laughing with malice towards the asker

Well, it's hard to get four kittens along.
What if they eat a bad bean?

which bean has more gas inside, a stateful one or a stateless one?

5:07 PM
A stateful bean can accumulate gas.

@badp...editing...

which scope should I give my bean? session scope? or should it be a sticky session bean?
I wish Java would die in a fire.

@rchern No problem, your answer is perfect as-is (unless there is a different way to achieve that.)

@badp...edited...

5:23 PM
@Fosco That comment is a good indication that you shouldn't post said question.

@PopularDemand You might be right but what's the harm? it's in the style of this question here which had no problems: stackoverflow.com/questions/99681/why-wont-tcl-die
I just think mine will encounter problems because of the chosen topic, and the evangelism of it's followers.

@Fosco What's the harm in posting any bad question? Stealing attention from "real" questions, making the site look -- ever so slightly -- worse to outsiders who are considering participating here, tying up community members' time and effort in dealing with your question instead of helping with "real" questions.

so you have issue with the TCL question I linked?

@Fosco Haven't even read it yet.

That question is titled: Why won't TCL die?.. mine is: Why won't Java die in a fire?

Yeah, it's a bad question. Belongs over at Regulator Headquarters. Or Programmers SE.

Heck, your question has already practically been asked at Programmers SE.

@PopularDemand good point.
ok then I'll just post it here so my time wasn't completely wasted.
In the vein of <a href="http://stackoverflow.com/questions/99681/why-wont-tcl-die">this past question</a>:

I've been forced to look at and edit Java code more times than I'd like, and just can't wrap my head around why anyone uses this language.

I view the paradigm of "write once, run everywhere" as a failed utopia. It is always actualized as "write once, runs terribly everywhere." There's little reason in my book to accept a lesser performing product on your chosen platform, so that others are able to use their own platforms. Those other people are not my concern, and if the product i

it was a long way from finished, but i should just let my Java hate go..

GAH! I hate how my glasses seem to attract every particle of dust in the room.

@HoLyVieRaspx ok you should be set.

6:06 PM
I saw that I'm at +230 for today

if you hit the envelope, you should see upvotes without rep assigned

just need to wait till I get the badge

i love hitting the cap

Especially if it's the first time

woo, that just gave me civic duty badge.. finally hit 300 votes.

6:08 PM
My next objective is a silver badge of [php]

I've never hit the cap by upvotes only. :/

I think I've hit the cap once on SO.

@GeorgeMarian If you have it'll be on stackoverflow.com/reputation

ive hit it 5+ times just on up votes, but that's slacking a whole day at work answering questions

I'm missing 340 upvotes for [php] till that objective
I'm at school :p

6:10 PM
@badp Ah, very cool. I guess I didn't reach the cap just from upvotes that one time that I hit it. lol

rep cap was reached via rep from upvotes *only* on 6 days
rep cap was exceeded on 7 days

hum... 8 days for votes... that seems suspiciously high.

On the whole SE network, I've only once gained more than 200 rep in a day -- when balpha awarded me a +500 bounty on a question of mine where the only "serious" answer was mine

-- 2010-08-19 rep +275
-- 2010-08-10 rep +260
-- 2010-07-30 rep +260
the cap is 230 on up votes?

6:13 PM
The cap on upvotes is 200

but accepted answer don't count in the cap

260 means, for example 20 × 10 + 15 × 4

so 20 up votes and 5 accepted answers = 275

I've got 2 accepted answers today and I'm at 230 atm

/me flexes

or 16 × 10 + 100 (bty)
etc.
25 upvotes and one downvote given total to a +199 right?

no
not anymore

oh, okay.

depending on when the downvote came in, right?...

that was fixed with the reputation overhaul in march

6:15 PM
dammit, stop deleting posts. I flip back here & immediately think Diago showed up

you mean message ?

whatever lines in chat are called
pretty sure they're POSTed though... ;-p

I deleted because it was wrong

@HoLyVieRaspx They count in getting you to the cap, but they're not voided once you pass the cap.

that's more appropriate on SO than on Chat. Here, you're supposed to leave wrong information available, so it can be properly mocked^H^H^H^H^H^Hcorrected

6:18 PM
:p

@Shog9 LOL

now it's time to hit daily cap on programmers

"What is your favorite programming Q&A site?"

@HoLyVieRaspx You make it sound like hitting the rep cap has a difficulty somewhere between "breathing" and "eating."

I can see question before other people

@Shog9 "What is the worst programming-related site?"

Q: Which browsers are officially supported?

EarlzOk now I know that the Stack Overflow system is designed well enough that you can have read only access even in Lynx. But what are the official browsers that the team supports that can use every feature of the site? Surely they have to draw the browser support line somewhere in the sand.

You mean it isn't?

@PopularDemand I agree

6:28 PM
@badp Dude, the tags are right there in the onebox.

Weird.

Any Belgians here I can laugh at tonight?
I just learned that Ivo isn't even a real one.
crickets
I guess not, then...

@balpha You should have asked without the "I can laugh at tonight"

Belgium isn't even a real country. So asking for a real Belgian is sorta pointless...

@Shog9 they must have at least 11 people there, since they managed to come up with a team...

6:33 PM
@Shog9 You take that back! They have their own waffles, for god's sake!

Why do people always feel the need to say "in the sand"

in the sand
(no idea why i said that, but suddenly the urge was overwhelming)

Hah, I wont a T-Shirt from DevExpress :)

@Shog9 So... what does that make Benelux?

Anyone knows if it will be possible to buy StackOverflow T-Shirts at some point? I got one as part of the one-for-top-100-users thingy you guys did, but it will start to wear in time :P

6:39 PM
@PopularDemand The One Ring

@LasseVKarlsen that has been possible for a while

yeah? where do I go?
or how do I order

@Shog9 Huh?

@LasseVKarlsen I say we start a counterfeiting operation and make bank on the supposed scarcity of SO t-shirts

@LasseVKarlsen This doesn't make sense starred out of context, but good question.

6:40 PM
:D
Ok, I'll send an email to Jeff instead :)

@Shog9 COPYRIGHTLAW'D!!!!!!!!!

I wear it as a badge every time I'm out on business and doing presentations

I gave mine to my wife.
I have a pile of stickers though; I guess I could just slap them on normal t-shirts

thinking of it now, it might actually not be possible right now, since they're making some changes to the process. But that shouldn't be too long
not sure, though

Would be cool if the T-Shirt had an auto-updated screen where it showed your reputation. And it would sync your reputation every time you have WIFI available
btw, quick question how long does mortarboard takes to be given ?

6:45 PM
instant-ish
(iirc)

Then you could have people watching Weblog's meta reputation in puzzlement
"Isn't it supposed to go, uh, up?"
14,786... 14,785... 14,784... 14,783...

wait - you'd order a Welbog Meta T-Shirt?

Welbog's shirt is Welbog's.

@Shog9 Would it also include his RSS feed?

I was thinking a list of names would fill it up nicely...

7:39 PM
LOL... Just had a funny experience after returning from the bank after getting some lunch
I'm wearing my ThinkGeek shirt which reads:
while(!(succeed=try()));
And as I walk in, the greeter woman asks me what my shirt says

that's "shirt", I suppose?

ROFLMAO yes
Feel free to flag me for that ;-)

I assumed "skirt"

@Shog9 Do they sell those?!? I'd wear one! ;-)

now your story is much less interesting

7:41 PM
it is, I'm sorry :-)
So the greeter asks me what my shirt says and I explain it's C code... and all the tellers start talking about how they took C++ and how much they hated it
Which I don't understand, but whatever :-)
And the manager comes over and she's like, "Ohhh, that's baaad! They taught us to never use the do-while loop!"
...
It's not a do-while loop, it doesn't have a do!!
Then they look at the check which I printed on my computer and are all amazed that you can print a check off your home PC
The teller's like, "Wow, you can print your checks? It's amazing what technology can do!!!"

...

You took a C++ course, and you work at a bank, and you didn't know you can buy printable checks???

time for a new bank

I can't believe you guys still use checks

I'm still impressed that your bank tellers actually took C++...

7:44 PM
we ditched those about 15 years ago

@balpha I only use it them to pay my landlord :-)

@balpha then what do you guys forge when you need money?!

@Fosco It's not my bank, it's his, LOL
I guess my depositing checks into his account instead of mailing it to him is what keeps my rent low-ish, or something =b

I take it then that the US still hasn't invented account-to-account money transfer? :)

I think that's mostly reserved to business transactions.

7:47 PM
@balpha That's where I need a new bank. Those cost me ~$20 US if the destination account isn't with my Bank

I started to do a side-job for this guy in NY, and he asked for my bank account and routing number to send me some motivation money. I politely declined.

@Shog9 I'm inclined to downvote you. What kind of answer is this:
0
A: Would it be possible to fix links with contained parenthesis in comments?

Shog9The #2 work-around on that page (urlencoding the parens) works in comments. Firefox will do it for you if you copy the URL directly from the address bar. Note that certain sites actually work better if you just strip the parenthetical portions out before posting anyway...

Why would you ever want to link to MSDN?
2

;-)
sadly, some of us are stuck using MS products

Hey, I'm one of those now.

sheds a tear for balpha

7:51 PM
@Josh huh...I'd assume this has to do with the scale of things - after all, sending money account-to-account internationally is pretty expensive in Europe; but locally (I'd guess that would be "within a state" in the US context) it's cheap.

let me once again quote this chat's JavaScript code:
    if ($.browser.msie)
        // IE fires the onstorage event without giving the event handler access to the
        // data, neither through the event object nor by updating the localStorage *before*
        // calling the handler. Quoting MSDN:
        // "Internet Explorer fires events when data in a storage area is updated, so
        // that information can synchronized between multiple instances of the browser or tabs."
        // Yeah, right.
        window.setInterval(function() {

Uhh, @balpha, I clicked the "show full text" link and now all I see is a scrollbar.

@balpha I've done that a few times. It's cheaper than Western Union, but not by a whole lot... and it's horribly inconvenient. It's actually faster to set up a PayPal account in some cases...

@mmeyers worked for me

@Shog9 it's pretty much the only way of paying here (unless you're in a store)

7:53 PM
@balpha Why would you use setInterval instead of setTimeout?

@mmyers ah, my IE7 tester is back

@Piskvor I assume it has to do with my bank being money-grubbing A-holes ;-)

@Josh Never saw a different kind of bank ;)

@balpha At your service. I can do Opera when I get home, too.

US Gov has loaned them massive amounts of money at 0% but they still keep our interest rates very high

7:54 PM
@balpha so what, you give your account number to someone and trust them not to take too much?

@Piskvor Sadly it's true

@Shog9 because I want to check all the time, not just once. I'm pretty much emulating an event handler

@balpha why not just use the event handler, and set a timeout to pull the data once the event has fired (after the event has finished firing)

@Shog9 I like PayPal + their debit card. 1.5% cash back and it draws right form my PayPal account

Do they require you to attach an actual bank account?

7:56 PM
@Shog9 well, the amount of time it took until the data was there seemed really random. But the idea is interesting, I'll play around with that

@Shog9 Hm, I'm not sure. I think maybe, because if my PayPal account is empty it draws from my bank account

@Shog9 if you give someone the permission to draw money from your account, and they do, you have 6 weeks to object to that withdrawal -- in which case they have to prove

@balpha btw I'm on Opera 10.61 here and it seems to be working all right.

@balpha I'm just curious - I've never played with that event, so hadn't run into the bug... but it sounds like the sort of thing that shows up in a number of Windows APIs; someone put the callback too soon, and tested it by setting a flag or something. The sort of thing that makes WinINET hell.
