Q: Small optimisation

Tom GullenWhen you enter a tag, it makes suggestions which you can select from. If I enter: SQL-Server Then I enter SQL-Se It suggests SQL-Server even though I've already used this tag. It would be a little faster to enter tags if it ommited tags that you have already typed as the 2nd suggestion is o...

@PopularDemand I like

Kev
just asked this over on SU chat but not many folks around. Anyone heard of MS calling an end user to talk about those error reports Windows phones home about?

@Kev Not me.

7:08 PM
@Kev Never heard of that...

End-users have Windows phones?

I suspect I may regret this, but... why do you ask?

@Kev @Sathya over there said it's a scam, and I can vouch for his reliability...

oh, you meant "phones home" figuratively
How would they legitimately have your number? Do they associate error reports with registrations?

Kev
yeah...Got an email from a mate who's dad was phoned from someone in india claiming to be from MS and calling about the error messages his PC was sending when apps don't shutdown correctly.

7:09 PM
what info would they ask for?...
i wouldn't give them anything worth scamming for

credit card numbers, family names...
you know, the usual variables that make Windows crash

"hi this is MS calling about that error report", "oh yeah? why does your phone OS suck?"

Kev
fortunately they're pretty savvy and declined to go any further with the call

/me uses a Samsung Omnia II.. Windows Mobile 6.5.x OS. I like it. The Swype keyboard is now a requirement for future phones.

Red flag number one: receiving a collect call from Redmond, India.

7:11 PM
heh

Kev
@PopularDemand yeah I think that's what they thought too :)

@Kev Weird, though. Phishing regressing from Internet to phone? Seems like they'd be easier to nab.

perhaps inspired by the lame windows commercials where random people said 'windows 7 was my idea', as if they could have some impact.

@Fosco Hey, those weren't bad commercials.

status-subjective

7:26 PM
@Fosco Oh, sorry, I'll go discuss it in the chat inste... heyyyy.

@PopularDemand lol :)
i figured the discussion was over.. i said they were lame, you said they weren't bad.. no where to go really..
You're a tough s.o.b.. always calling me out on my chat faux pas..

@Fosco There are plenty of places to go, it's just that none of them are good.

A: Dealing with interruptions / Working in solitary confinement?

FoscoHow much time did you lose just keeping track of all of your interruptions? Make yourself appear to be less approachable.. Wear big obnoxious headphones, stop bathing, start responding to others in unrecognizable grunts. Or just deal.

I'll drink to that.

@balpha lol

@Fosco All of your suggestions there are what I call "baseline."

Baseline? Peh...

A: Do you drink/eat anything good for your eyes?

Mr. CSince I switched from drinking carrots to drinking carrot juice, I've found my eyesight has improved mightily. Also, I have far fewer carrots stuck in my eyes. That's a win-win in my book.

@Shog9 How was he drinking carrots?!
They were probably getting jammed up in his eyes!

@Shog9 lol you are a winner troll

@Fosco, what are you talking about? That's Mr. C. "Mr. C" and "Shog9" don't even have any characters in common.

7:40 PM
@PopularDemand Would it make more sense if I said they were instances of the same class?

well, they both have body-less heads as their avatars

Yeesh, it is the end of the week, I tells ya.

I gotta say, I'm enjoying Programmers.SE more than I expected. Finally getting rid of all the stupid answers to subjective questions that I've been wanting to post on SO but haven't because I didn't want to encourage them...

@Shog9 If all of your answers are like that one, I'm not sure we should be encouraging you.

Naw. Some of my answers are much, much longer

PSE is becoming fun...

I don't believe nobody liked my freehand crying frowny-face!

Hello

hey @Chacha102

How is everyone's Friday?

@Chacha102 Saner than expected.

7:53 PM
@PopularDemand Same here. dissapointing!

apparently it is Constitution day...

Looking forward to a beer in a short while

@ChrisF Yey! Same here

@TheUnhandledException I was trying to not-really-subtly needle Chacha about the room name, but okay.

7:56 PM
I'll have to make sure I don't try and answer any questions while drinking though. I make enough mistakes when sober!

@PopularDemand Likewise!
4 hours ago, by The Unhandled Exception
hey it's Friday, why hasn't the tavern name changed back to The Tavern Of Insanity (General) ?

Well. Everyone has gone home, perhaps I should try something new and not be here when the lights get shut off at 4:15 today.

Do you know what just came in the mail?

@Fosco Your SO t-shirt?

Me... I ran out of tissues.
/me iz just kidding, of course. i'm at work.

7:59 PM
@FOSCO!!!!!!!!
That was odd

My message didn't appear, instead, it scrolled me to the top

10:46 PM
what the heck

I take it the beep was about that message?

i just got about 15 notification banners at once for an event starting in 13 minutes.

Yah, that's the one.

1 would do...but at 13 minutes??

it doubled up, huh?

10:48 PM
@MarcGravell And then some.

and then some?
maybe 1 per room you're in?

I would join in on the happy hour as bought myself a bottle of scotch yesterday. Alas, I have to drive in a few hours.

but all in one room?

@MarcGravell Possibly.
Yah, all in one room (here).

hmm - will look at, but not right now

10:49 PM
@MarcGravell whip crack What do you mean "not right now?" ;)

@Marc, they were all shown here, probably 75% of the vertical space

how many?

13 minutes seems like a weird time for a reminder

well, that is when it is! Simply when the scheduled job ran, it was 13 minutes away

just an odd number :P
i think i had more than the number of rooms i'm in, but i didn't count ):

10:51 PM
I was in 2 rooms and got it twice

once per room would tie nicely into some of the internal comms etc. Should be an easy enough fix. Actually, I thought we already had a uniqueness check in there.
(in the client code)
a large chunk of chat is simply a matter of targetted vs broadcast message delivery. And I use "simply" entirely incorrectly.

I did have firefox open to chat to test something maybe a few (10?) minutes ago, so maybe that's why i got even more than expected?

I didn't count the number of messsages, but I'm in 5 rooms and that seems like the number of messages.

Odd that happy hour ties into that period when everyone's leaving...

The Tavern of Fridayness (General)

Here we have our fill of bread and wine, and then tell of tale

@MarcGravell 'Cause it's time to hit the bars! :)

10:57 PM
Is the event notification a setting or does that always happen?

'cos after a few more, the one over there, sat on their own, may be more... acceptable?
new code. Obviously a bit quirky. Input / feedback always desirable. We're thinking of limiting the broadcast so you only get it if you've been in the room at some point. Or maybe spoken in the room.
At the moment, anyone who could join it gets the message. But there is only one message.

I get the purpose of the notification for an event, but for something as silly as the daily message setup for here, it is meh.

Then lose the "silly" daily message. It is configured as a daily scheduled event...
Use the room description instead maybe.

Ola
@MarcGravell You can't really use that logic because people will use the features for whatever they please.

11:13 PM
@Marc, yeah, it isn't so much the feature, rather the event itself :P

I love Joel's blog post....
