A non sequitur () is a conversational and literary device, often used for comedic purposes. It is a comment that, because of its apparent lack of meaning relative to what it follows, seems absurd to the point of being humorous or confusing, as in the following exchange:

I've smoked 2 cuban cigars so far. The first one put me off cigars for a while, the second put me back on. Both the same brand, though different sizes and more importantly, the 2nd one was stored properly.
@fosco A good cigar is a good cigar, regardless of origin. But, I must say that cuban was delicious. It spent about 15 months in a co-workers humidor. A serious aficionado.
And more to the point, storage is a huge factor. That first cuban was not stored properly at all. It was not in a humidor, so it had dried out considerably.
That reminds me of a co-worker who wanted a monitor stand for his 2nd monitor. They wouldn't spring for it, so he grabbed a couple reams of paper out of the stock room.
@devinb Yep. I have an unusual situation where I still work for my old team, just in a new physical location, so the other people who work in this office have almost no effect on me and vice versa.

A lawyer friend of mine once told me about a company that paid its employees in proof sets from the US Mint. They reported getting paid the face value of the coins on their tax returns, but sold the sets at -- considerably higher -- market value.
The government went after them for tax fraud -- which is how my lawyer friend came to know about the situation -- but the courts went with "look, you created these coins with the express purpose of making them worth more than face value, so sod off."

@PopularDemand I guess I could post a link that is a reply and compare that to what I posted. Those are potentially two different scenarios, as the styling is a bit different on your own posts vs those of others. (The doesn't necessarily mean it makes a difference, though.)

I think he made good points. and then carefully (with the skill of an artisan) crafted a thick layer of misdirection and troll/flame bait, so that no one would ever pay attention to the actual issue.
