4:00 PM
Was it a reference to something?

@George: with the nose turned up I meant

Or what's the correct phrasing :)

I guess I would have said "You try driving with your nose held high."

Correct

4:02 PM
or "your nose up in the air"
I gotcha now, that would've gotten a LOL from me. :)

There was a red prius in my area who pulled up next to my friend and mooned them..

OIC...maybe he's from Austria? ;)

How do you flag a moderator to deal with this?

Resizing the "about me" box on my profile page to watch everything else on the page move around is about the most fun I've had all day

@MichaelMrozek Been one of those days, huh?

No, I just lead a very uneventful life. It's the little things that make me happy
Serially downvoting all of Shog9's answers gets boring after three or four hours

@Michael: you may try serial upvoting of mine

4:19 PM
Here's a question that's been bugging me for a while...
Why do I have "beta user" marking next to some proposals on Area51, but not others?

@James Renamed them to "User"

Eh? I don't see a User marking anywhere.
I've actually participated in Pro Webmasters (156 rep) instead of just lurking, like on Web Apps (101 rep).
Web apps shows 'beta user" next to it, but Pro webmasters shows nothing.

Non-sequitur of the day:

No, I don't

Hmmm... I only see the link. Let me refresh.

@Dennis: refresh my answer too :)

I wonder why? It's on a line by itself and it worked in the sandbox

See now

There it is, maybe it doesn't work on a Shift-Enter line

4:32 PM
@DennisWilliamson I thought it had to be in it's own message.
Also, what makes that a non sequitur, rather than just random?

@George: nothing, that's why it's a non sequitur

If you say so.
To me that's just random.

@GeorgeMarian And here I thought you were sharing juicy gossip about @random

@Diago LOL
A non sequitur () is a conversational and literary device, often used for comedic purposes. It is a comment that, because of its apparent lack of meaning relative to what it follows, seems absurd to the point of being humorous or confusing, as in the following exchange: :Q: How many surrealist painters does it take to change a light bulb? :A: Fish. The use of non sequitur in humor can be deliberate or unintentional. Literally, the expression is Latin for "it does not follow." It comes from the word "non" meaning not, and sequi, meaning to follow. In other literature, a non sequitur can...
Non sequitur (Latin for "it does not follow"), in formal logic, is an argument in which its conclusion does not follow from its premises. In a non sequitur, the conclusion can be either true or false, but the argument is fallacious because there is a disconnection between the premise and the conclusion. All formal fallacies are special cases of non sequitur. The term has special applicability in law, having a formal legal definition. Many types of known non sequitur argument forms have been classified into many different types of logical fallacies. Non sequitur in normal speech T...

Why didn't mine one-box?

@DennisWilliamson Your link isn't good enough. ;)
I don't think that site has onebox support.

@GeorgeMarian: thanks, that's helpful

@DennisWilliamson Meaning there's a list of sites that are...I don't think I have a link to the list.

I seem to have the same link to Wiktionary as you

@Dennis: George was linking to Wikipedia

4:40 PM
en.wikipedia.org != en.wiktionary.org

Oh, I misread it.

(in the Progressive lady's voice) "I do it all the time."

Anyway, @GeorgeMarian, you can see from the definition why its a non-sequitur. I jumped in with something that didn't follow anything immediately prior.

misuses flags about @MichaelMrozek's head

@DennisWilliamson Yah, I guess. But you announced it, which pretty much killed the joke.

4:44 PM
yeah, but then I had to explain it which really did it in

lol fair enough
Though, you didn't need to explain non sequitur to me.

@balpha The link is still problematic though.

@devinb it does!

6:57 PM
:p

feels lost
Back to selecting a cigar.

I have a few cubans..
They take care of my yard.

:D

7:13 PM
I've smoked 2 cuban cigars so far. The first one put me off cigars for a while, the second put me back on. Both the same brand, though different sizes and more importantly, the 2nd one was stored properly.

7:23 PM
@GeorgeMarian interesting.. I've never had the pleasure..

@fosco A good cigar is a good cigar, regardless of origin. But, I must say that cuban was delicious. It spent about 15 months in a co-workers humidor. A serious aficionado.

awesome.

And more to the point, storage is a huge factor. That first cuban was not stored properly at all. It was not in a humidor, so it had dried out considerably.

yeah, like any.. smokable herbs would. :P

lol
true dat

7:45 PM
@GeorgeMarian what are your favorite brands?
of cigar i mean

Let's see...where do I start?

with the good ones

Romeo y Julieta is a favorite, just about every blend of theirs.

my father is big on their stuff

Montecristo is usually pretty damn good. Cohiba, of course, but for my money they're a bit overpriced for the Red Dot (i.e. non-cubans)
Graycliff, some Ghurkas, many of Rocky Patel's blends, just about anything by Don Pepin Gargcia.
Man-o-war, Camacho, some Padilla, a few Perdomo.
I'm not a huge fan of Macanudo, but I'll smoke 'em if you give me one. :)

7:52 PM
I like Rocky's blends, one of the recent summer blends he had were excellent
err was excellent

I saw those, but I never had a chance to try one.

You get them online? or from a shop?

I just recieved some Old World Reserve's recently.
Usually online, though I do go to shop occasionally.
Right now, being unemployed, I've turned into a value hound. $2-4/stick

Yeah, being in college i have to tone my tastes down

Ever smoke/seen The Griffin's?

7:55 PM
have not

They're a pretty decent, mild blend. Made by Davidoff, I believe.
How could I forget Arturo Fuente? Oh yah, they're usually pricey and rarely discounted.

but sooo good

Ashton is another very smooth, mild blend that I liked.
@James Yes, they are. I bought some mixed filler fumas. I still have one left.

My buddy gave me an Opus X, i still owe him for that

Not as good as the real deal, burn issues a plenty, but certainly the essence of Arturo Fuente.
Oooh...I haven't tried an Opus X.
Gurkha Beast is damn fine cigar....damn pricey too.
That reminds me, I have to check on the humi that's serving as my TV stand. =( That's got my best cigars in it (since I can't open it as easily).

8:02 PM
That's an interesting method of moderation

Well, it's only a TV stand out of necessity. Going to be replacing with a real TV stand after the move.

if the TV stands on it - it's a TV stand :)

heh, i just realised my monitor is sitting on a pile of books, so i guess that must make them monitor stands

That reminds me of a co-worker who wanted a monitor stand for his 2nd monitor. They wouldn't spring for it, so he grabbed a couple reams of paper out of the stock room.

I was under the impression that this was a non-smoking tavern.

What's wtf-worthy?

I think Chrome tossed in a space because I used the spell check.

Not even 5 pm and all the lights have gone out. What a weird Friday timer.

Eh? Lights at the office?
So, right now I'm smoking a 5 Vegas Gold Maduro. Not bad for what's basically a house brand.

@GeorgeMarian Yes.
I just moved to a new office and it looks like everyone ends work early here, especially on Fridays.

8:24 PM
heh

@Popular, and you'll change that, right?

@devinb Yep. I have an unusual situation where I still work for my old team, just in a new physical location, so the other people who work in this office have almost no effect on me and vice versa.

@popular I'm currently on a team with people in Switzerland, but due to the quirks of the Swiss immigration system, I was booted from the country. So now I'm the only person on my team in Toronto.

@PopularDemand My first job was almost like that. I was the only one from the team working in HQ, but the team was based in the back-office. That was...interesting. I had two managers.

Looks like unusual is the new usual. @devinb do you work from home, then?

8:35 PM
No, my company has a toronto office. I was a consultant working on-site in Swiss.

Also, I found the link to the Dilbert I mentioned earlier. Apparently you can't reply to your own messages, though. I noted it in feedback, I wonder if anyone will do anything about it.
How do/did you guys deal with the distance factor? I've only been here for a few weeks, but I feel like I'm not fully in the loop anymore.

when I was younger, I thought Dilbert was funny because of its incredible exaggerations of the ridiculousness of office life. Having since grown up, I discovered that Dilbert is funny in a despairing sense, for its accurate underplayed portrayal of the ridiculousness of office life.

@PopularDemand Eh? There is a way, unless they've plugged it up.

@popular, Well, I'm 6 hours away from their timezone. But basically, I keep an MSN window open all day to the people I need to talk to.

@PopularDemand test reply to my own message
Hm, I guess so. But you have to manually type in the message ID.

8:40 PM
yup
which is good enough for me, keeps me from abusing it :)
BTW great comic

Ah, I found a better version, defined as in color and not in a Google book.

Me likey linky, me likey linky.

I'm so glad Scott Adams gave up on the flash solution.

@GeorgeMarian Stop that.

8:44 PM
@devinb No. pouts

@GeorgeMarian I'll promise to give you zero cookies! But only if you stop.

Awww...

I wonder why that reply didn't convert.

@PopularDemand Bad post number?

@PopularDemand It's keying off your inherent failure as a human being, and general dearth of purpose.

8:47 PM
@PopularDemand Found the comic here: dilbert.com/strips/comic/1998-04-09
@GeorgeMarian Yep. Turns out they're not all sequential.

@PopularDemand They're sequential across the system.

@devinb Looks like someone's asking for four downvotes a day.

@PopularDemand The post numbers are global. But we can't cross reference.

@PopularDemand I think this is my lowest voted post ever.

@devinb You think what is your lowest voted post ever?

8:51 PM
@PopularDemand I got a -3 once, and promptly deleted it. [peer-pressure] for me :)

@Popular never mind. I'm not telling.
@Popular and Bring It On. I crave opposition.
@GeorgeMarian I haven't got the peer-pressure. I'm simply unable to say anything that people aren't convinced by.

lol
Or you beat them about the head with it until they relent?

See? you believe me.
Also true.

@GeorgeMarian Ah yes, the venerable [united-stated] tag.

8:55 PM
@PopularDemand lol

Good point. That is far lower. But I can't delete it. Because I still stand by every word.

A lawyer friend of mine once told me about a company that paid its employees in proof sets from the US Mint. They reported getting paid the face value of the coins on their tax returns, but sold the sets at -- considerably higher -- market value.

@devinb Well, that one answer I deleted because I was... gasp ...wrong.

@George. I can't recall a situation where that's applied to me.

The government went after them for tax fraud -- which is how my lawyer friend came to know about the situation -- but the courts went with "look, you created these coins with the express purpose of making them worth more than face value, so sod off."

8:58 PM
@PopularDemand Nice.

@George. I'm sure other people can think of situations where it's applied to me. But they're... gasp... wrong. :p

@popular, how did the company acquire them at less than face value?

@devinb I don't know whether the company acquired them at market value or not. But it was a win for the employees.

@devinb I don't think that was the issue. Rather, the employees sold them for more than face value.

Breaking up the flow for @George

As I said. I'm still right on that one.

@PopularDemand Hey, this is a tavern, afterall.

@GeorgeMarian ?

@PopularDemand The only flow that shouldn't break is the alcohol.
@GeorgeMarian Otherwise, the coversation starts and stops randomly. :)

@GeorgeMarian So... not testing it anymore?

9:17 PM
@PopularDemand Oh, heh. I got distracted. I'd need someone else to post a link, w/o a reply for the test to be completely valid.

@devinb WRONG!

@GeorgeMarian Er... if you say so.

@Shog What do you know?

author == "devinb" ? "WRONG" : "right-ish"

@PopularDemand I guess I could post a link that is a reply and compare that to what I posted. Those are potentially two different scenarios, as the styling is a bit different on your own posts vs those of others. (The doesn't necessarily mean it makes a difference, though.)

9:20 PM

I've been considering Feature Request -> "Why can't I vote for my own posts?" "It's a very frustrating user experience for me to read a post, agree with every single word that's been written, and find that I'm not allowed to vote it up, simply because I wrote it. I thought I was supposed to vote up great answers?"

It's implied.
Why would you post an answer you don't consider upvote-worthy?

troll users who up-vote stuff they agree with, even when it is presented in a bad light

@Popular I wouldn't. But there are sure as hell a lot of posts out there when I can't think anyone could think it was worthwhile.
@Shog, i'm pretty sure that I have never in my life, (barring the words coming up) ever said the words "tempest in a teakettle"
@Shog9 Why would you downvote a post where I explicitly agree with you?

@devinb Agreeing with me doesn't mean you're right. See my previous comment...

@Shog9 I agree.

9:32 PM
Good man.

@Shog9 There have been situations where I wish I wasn't on the same side as certain others, because they do such a bad job of presenting the position that they taint it.
For instance, that link that you "helpfully" added to my post :p

That's what I loved about Evan...

Evan was a fairly good orator. He just loved poking fun at the zealots.

and proposing things that had gained some traction before, but in a way that made their flaws shine like the morning sun through a rusted-out steel roof

@Shog9 That's... that's beautiful.

9:36 PM
@devinb Is it really oration, if it isn't spoken?

I think he made good points. and then carefully (with the skill of an artisan) crafted a thick layer of misdirection and troll/flame bait, so that no one would ever pay attention to the actual issue.
@George, all the greatest speeches were written down first.

@devinb Maybe. Regardless, this definition leaves it open to things other than speaches: merriam-webster.com/dictionary/oration

Is there a way to post flair in an SO post? It looks like no, but I'm just making sure

@MichaelMrozek You mean dynamic flair, yes?
