12:00 AM
@TimStone ahem

hides

@AidenBell That's what I was thinking. The motivation is my desire to manage my delicious bookmarks outside of the browser.

@GeorgeMarian apt-get install python3

@radp You forgot the sudo :P

@radp - It seems we have a Python advice-off ... en garde

12:02 AM
What are the popular server distro's these days?

Fedora/Centos/RHEL seems popular on the Linux front

There's a server variant of Fedora?

@GeorgeMarian - no but a minimal install with the server packages usually is robust

Then there is Redhat Enterprise (which is a more stable, more tooled fedora) and Centos which is RHEL unbranded

12:05 AM
Can it be CLI only? There isn't much point in having a sever with a GUI when it won't have a monitor hooked-up most of the time.

Yea
The minimal package has no X11 or anything, just basic kernel, commands and some tools
then clip on HTTP Server, MySQL Server, PostgreSQL or whatever

Ah, then I'll have to look into that. I did download the live-cd recently to have a look at it.

If you choose Fedora, be sure to review the package groups during the installation process. The base package has a bit-torrent CLI client?!?

@AidenBell Yah, I basically want a LAMP stack for myself, on a separate machine. And things like git, of course.

@GeorgeMarian - Yea, Fedora is a safe bet IMHO

12:08 AM
It seems well maintained and less "funky" than Ubuntu.

Grab the net-install.iso, which is 1 CD and it will install over the net
@GeorgeMarian - I have used tons of distros and always end up back with Fedora. Though KDE users might want to piss off elsewhere lol
They aren't wanted around those parts

lol
I've tried giving KDE a go, but I always come back to gnome.

Hahah

Damn right.

I have been meaning to give XFCE a try, just because I'm a fan of lean-and-mean. But, I'm still not comfortable enough with linux, so I stick to the more popular things.

12:11 AM
@GeorgeMarian - I find other WMs are a bit overrated. They do some things well, but never feel like good all-rounders. Gnome is just .... my bestest friend.
Except when nautilus eats 800Mb of Ram for no reason

Dang, my sinuses are bugging out. See, this is the reason I drink scotch. ;)

Yeess, that's why I drink too ... the ... sinuses ... yes.
2
A medical reason

@AidenBell LOL Nautilus drives me nuts. I'm still trying to figure out how it does it's volume mounting magic.
@AidenBell lol

@GeorgeMarian - some random combination of DBus events handed over to it by udev I think. It is magic however
UDev Volume Added Event -> DBus Event -> Nautilus Handler

Finding information about it is a total PITA!

12:15 AM
Yea, anything UDev/SELinux related is a bit cut-off
@GeorgeMarian - which reminds me, SELinux will do your head in. Be prepared or set it to permissive.

Wes
@AidenBell +1 * 100

12:17 AM
Running trac under selinux is a pita

@GeorgeMarian SELinux is fine until you disagree with it, then it gets all mental and decides to savage your POSIX-based testes.

lol
Sounds fun. ;)

Hey, whatever you are into :P
And I didn't mean Ravage

Wes

see nobody likes it

Better than AppArmor
It was like calling a a stack of cardboard boxes a wall

12:21 AM
@AidenBell Ironically, though I wasn't thinking of that interpretation of ravage, I did miss read that as 'ravage' instead of 'savage.'

lmao

12:49 AM
Groupon has apparently rejected Google's offer. o:

Seriously?

Wow
I wish I had that kind of offer to turn down, hah :P

Hrm, in less interesting news, I feel like I'm digging myself a hole with this code. Anyone want to read my mind and point me in the right direction? ;)

1:00 AM

Hahah, thanks.

Happy to help! (:

Nice, hah

heh

1:18 AM
@GeorgeMarian That's probably the most important part.

Yah, i was thinking that must have been the primary motivation.

1 hour later…
2:33 AM
Weird... I don't see my gravatar to see it?
Apparently yes. 'tis a bug, eh?

What uh...are you talking about? :P

Ah, right, no. I just can't see my gravatar even though I'm in the room
Funny how the deraged mind works

Mobius bagel?

Maths made delicious.

@TimStone Now can we have a Penrose bagel too?

2:39 AM
Heh :P

2:50 AM
I need testers for this: jsfiddle.net/yijiang/XdUBf/8

That's jQuery... Doesn't it test itself yet?

@mootinator $(myCode).working(true) sure it does!

I could use an Idiot's Guide to Maven. I wonder if they publish such a thing.

It's C#'s fault.

@mootinator Apparently :P

A: Add chat-like YouTube support to Stack Exchange

Yi JiangOkay, here's a simple application I've created to do this: Video Link Generator. Give it a try and tell me how well it works. If it works reasonably well I think I'll bake it into a userscript. Input: URL: http://youtu.be/EK2tWVj6lXw Title: Rickroll Code Geneated: [![Rickroll](http://i2.yt...

4:39 AM
@PopularDemand The answer to any question you may have about Maven is "Add more XML to your POM."

@TimStone I have done so. Nothing happened.

Heh, you didn't add enough!
But more seriously, what's the problem?

@TimStone I'm pretty sure I can't just keep throwing XML at it. I think I need to actually run it at some point, in some fashion.

Yeah, that's usually not a bad idea.

4:42 AM
Search Amazon for "idiot's guide maven" if you're not at work. What the heck?

@PopularDemand Ewww... which part of Maven suggests... that?

@PopularDemand I get the feeling I'm not seeing what you're seeing :P
Oh, wait, you said Amazon.
learns to read

@TylerChacha Agreed, I wouldn't want to split my time between a bunch of chat rooms. (Hence, why this is typically the best place to fine me.) However, what to call it? While the "LAMP Room" has possibilities, it doesn't exactly follow that CSS & JS would belong and "WebDev something or another" is too broad.

Oh, right. "idiot's guide". Bad Amazon, bad

4:44 AM
Ah, hahah

@PopularDemand jQuery is the answer! ;)

@YiJiang mvn archetype:tallDarkHandsome -DinteractiveMode=true

In addition to those...interesting choices, did anyone else get Monk Season 6?
Because that one really confuses me.

@TimStone Yep.
"maven for dummies" isn't much better.

@PopularDemand Surely "The Definitive Guide" should do?

4:48 AM
@YiJiang Probably. Not actually looking to buy, I was just wondering if it existed.

@TimStone It came up as a suggestion when searching for Maven titles?

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, hahah.

@GeorgeMarian Yes, apparently

Is one of the characters named Maven?

4:49 AM
@TimStone To answer "more seriously, what's the problem?" the problem is that I have just used Maven for like the second time in my life, by copy-pasting, and need to read the documentation. But thanks for offering to help.

@GeorgeMarian ...After the Idiot's Guide to both Supercharged Kama Sutra (illustrated) and Amazing Sex (third edition)

@YiJiang Not that I watch Monk regularly or anything, but I don't think so. Well, I have no idea at all, actually. But, that's a good point.
@TimStone NICE!

@GeorgeMarian Just checked the Wiki page for it, no apparently
Right, -1 Amazon search

@TimStone What no Joy of Sex (illustrated edition)?

@PopularDemand Ah, fair enough. I hardly have a grasp of it myself, but I get it to work well enough to do what I need it to do, so good luck with it.
@GeorgeMarian It's not an Idiot's Guide. :P
(the search terms were "idiot's guide maven")

4:51 AM
@TimStone It's idiot proof (With illustrations too!) :P

@GeorgeMarian Great book, BTW. I wonder where I've left my copy...

A measly two stars for this? For shame!
5 hours ago, by The Unhandled Exception
Flagging @MichaelMrozek does sound like fun, but, why am I doing it again?

@YiJiang Hahah

@TimStone LOL, fair enough.

Wait a minute. Why is this publishing house encouraging idiots to reproduce?

4:53 AM
@PopularDemand I didn't want to support his questioning of flagging Michael Mrozek, since there should be no room for discussion on that issue.

Gah! Go figure. When I actually want to smoke a maduro cigar, I'm realizing that I'm running quite low.

@TimStone Wise words.

;)

BTW, Lindeman's 2009 pinot noir is quite nice.
It has a nice fruity character, without being too sweet.

@GeorgeMarian Huh, they make wine? I suppose that's not terribly surprising.

4:56 AM
@GeorgeMarian Agree.

@PopularDemand I bought it at the supermarket, 'cause it was on sale. Definitely a good buy.

@GeorgeMarian I've only ever tried their beers. Not really a fan of fruity beers, so I didn't really enjoy them. I suppose it's more acceptable in wine? I don't drink wine at all.

@GeorgeMarian I'll have to add that to my shopping list and give it a try, thanks.

They make beer? Heh.

@TimStone Anytime, except before noon. ;)

5:00 AM
@mootinator Lindemans Framboise Lambic

@PopularDemand Certainly, depending on your tastes. It's not very fruity, mind you. I'm usually not a fan of sweet wines.

@PopularDemand Raspberry beer eh? Weird..

Lovely how everybody here's complaining about snow. Once I get back to somewhere nearer to the equator I should post something like "What's this snow thing everyoone's going on about?"

@TimStone I've had that and the peach. It was part of a 100-beers challenge thing.

5:02 AM
Ah, nice.

@YiJiang I used to live in Buffalo. They just got dumped on, 3+ feet in some areas.

Also known as "the best marketing ploy ever invented for a college town faux dive bar."

Hahah ;)

It was somewhere in the area of 3 inches per hour, at one point.

Ahahahah Wikipedia, you have to be kidding me.

5:04 AM
The temperature here should allow for snow, actually, but it's just dipping slightly below 0 and 'tis the dry season, so no snow for, say, the next month or so

@TimStone WTF?!?
O'RLY?

Right?

@TimStone (rub eyes) Is Wiki really that desparate? (or poor?)

So, Lindenman's wine is from Australia, and beer from Belgium. Not the same company :/

(Sorry, couldn't resist. That truly deserves the owl.)

5:05 AM
@mootinator Oh, good catch.

@YiJiang Perhaps...I'm a little disturbed that his thought process went "I can't wait for my son to grow up.....Hm, I sure as hell hope he has Wikipedia."

Any idea how long the 'close harassing message' cookie lasts?
I sort of miss being stared at.
Maybe I'll clear my cookies.

The wha?

@TimStone The close button also drops a cookie I think (or is there a "Stop showing me these things" button) that removes the message from all new pages for a while

If you click the X on the message at the top of Wikipedia it seems to go away for awhile.
I assume there's a cookie involved.

5:08 AM
Ah ha

Anyway, I'm annoyed enough to pull in ABP for this. (poof) Jimmy Wales be gone!

@mootinator There's a app for that. Well, a Firefox addon.

Hm...

Oh, my bad, It's an extension for Chrome.

Off to lunch. Funny how living in a different TZ means that you get to go for lunch while everyone else is having breakfast or supper or something

5:14 AM
Apparently it's picky about that being passed from the cookie.
http://en.wikipedia.org/?hidesnmessage=1 Doesn't work. (Sad panda.)

@YiJiang Wine and cigar, here. :)

kicks Eclipse

@TimStone Komodo Edit Oh, you're a Java dev...

Anyhow, hitting x once gives you a week of peace by default.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, heh. Although right now I was just trying to delete some sections from this XML file, not really sure why that was an application-freezing process.

5:17 AM
@TimStone "Cause Eclipse sucks?

Could be ;)

I gave it a go, and it gave me the willies.

It does Java well enough (I suppose).

Back when I was in school we used Code Warrior. shudder

I've never had the pleasure, which it looks like was a good thing. :P

5:22 AM
My first year we used JBuilder.

@GeorgeMarian I should have been so lucky! We used Code Warrior Learning Edition!

Then we went to Code Warrior

It was quite exciting when I needed to finish my project at home. When I asked myself WTF are we using Macs to do programming?

My favorite project was the one where the DB2 server went down 6 hours before the big project for that class was due.
So many angry sleep-deprived CS students.

heh
That musta been fun.

5:30 AM
That was the same professor who rescheduled a midterm at the last minute to be the same day as my great grandmother's 100th birthday :/

@mootinator Lovely. It's amazing how disorganized some professors can be.

New stuff for 102content.com/triton
Alerts in the lower corner, Ctrl + I and Ctrl + B while typing,

@TylerChacha They need to prevent browser kebyinds.

5:48 AM
try that (You'll need to reload, see a pop up, and then reload)
Application Cache isn't always the best way to develop something...
I might have to run a parallel version somewhere that doesn't cache..

@TylerChacha Nice, that works. Though, I didn't see a pop-up.

hmm...
I show a popup when you've downloaded the new cache..
Firefox or Chrome?

I used both F5 and Ctrl+R. BTW, I'm on Minefield (FF 4.0b8pre)

hmm .. odd... but at least it works
I'm trying to figure out why Markdown isn't correctly recognizing paragraphs

@TylerChacha That I have no idea.

6:00 AM
Figured it out
The other guy I'm working with created a way to display the paragraph parsing through options passed in the constructor

@TylerChacha Ok, I gotta know. Explain.

He thought Markdown added too many <p>s, so his solution was to make it easy to just display that excessive <p> creating functionality
The problem is that without those paragraphs, everything is just a single blob.

@TylerChacha Ah, ok. I was wonderig WTF?

I just got annoyed because I was making paragraphs and then all the stuff was getting smashed together..

hehe
BTW, I've just gotta say that Linux is so much better for my "work-flow."

6:07 AM
I've also made it so that whenever you load Triton, it gives you a nice message of the bottom telling you what version you are on and "Enjoy"

The only thing I'm missing is a 2nd (or 3rd) monitor.

@TylerChacha Nice. It works in Minefield and Chrome.

I have 3 monitors AND a Macbook
muhuha

@TylerChacha Yah, I'm hoping to add a second monitor this holiday season. Not sure what the gf has planned for a gift, but if it isn't a second monitor I'm buying one soon. Assuming our elected officials don't eff-us over unemployed schmucks.

6:10 AM
:p

I hate this crap. Not that the vacation isn't nice and all, but I just have to do something. Even if I were to win the lottery I'd be working. Likely for myself, but I would still be working on something.

Sometime I'm going to need to take a look at how Triton uses the Fragment..
Right now it is a reference to the current thread being shown so if you refresh it loads the correct thread

@GeorgeMarian I've got plenty of unfinished stuff laying around for you...Heh

Long story short though, if you try to jump to a particular post on a thread through the sidebar, the whole thing gets screwed up

@TimStone Oh, yah? Any of it paid? ;)
@TylerChacha Heh, that sidebar will need work.

6:15 AM
Well, we should be hiring in the near future, but I imagine an East Coast Java position isn't your cup of tea, hahah.

I.e. the document related functions need to be collected together.
@TimStone Probably not, as I'm on the left cost.

Aye

Though, I have been considering moving into a technical product management type of role and just keep the programming to a side thing.
Trouble is, without actual experience, most places aren't willing to take the risk. =/

Yeah, that's a tough break. :/

That said, I know that type of role would be a cake walk for me.
Maybe even too easy.

6:19 AM
Hm, apparently I've broken Java.

@TimStone That shouldn't be too hard. ;)

System.out.println("Find " + this.prepare(variable, name) + " in " + allVariables + " is " + allVariables.contains(this.prepare(variable, name)));
> Find STUDYID in [STUDYID, USUBJID] is false
So STUDYID is somehow not in the set of STUDYID, USUBJID

heh, wtf?

Right? I'm very confused.

What does this.prepare() do? Could that be interfering in some way?

6:24 AM
Ah...Bastards.
It's not actually STUDYID, USUBJID
It's "STUDYID, USUBJID"

ahaha

Which was due to me being a dumbass setting up the test case which this was failing on.
Arrays.asList("STUDYID, USUBJID")

Man, this bottle of wine must be no-standard.

I'm thirsty now, heh

hehe
It's pretty good wine. Definitely a good buy. I'm gonna look out for it when I'm at the supermarket again.
The bottles says "Juicy raspberry flavours with a soft finish."
Not that I noted that myself, but upon further reflection I can't argue.

6:29 AM
Heheh, nice.

I must say pinot noirs are great red wines. Not as flat as merlots, yet not as full-bodied as a cabernets.

I'm inclined to agree. Unfortunately for myself, the best I can do at the moment is Pepsi or cranberry juice, so I think I'll go with the latter. ;)

hehe
I take it you prefer Pepsi over Coke?

I actually like them both equally. However, Coke made me angry, so I started buying Pepsi exclusively for a while...now Pepsi has gone and done the same thing (I think), so meh.

lol
Fair enough, they're both huge corporate products.

6:39 AM
Well, and that's the problem.
They want to get all creative and put new products out...
And they do so long enough that I start liking them

Personally, i think Coke, made with real sugar, in a glass bottle just barely edges out Pepsi, but just barely. Pepsi, with real sugar, in a glass bottle is great.

And then they yank them away. :(

i didn't even bother with the new flavors of Pepsi. I got a free bottle of Pepsi Max once from Pizza Hut. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't excited about it.

I was mostly excited about Pepsi Throwback, since I greatly prefer real sugar over HFCS.
But it seems to have disappeared again.

@TimStone Yes, absolutely. That is tasty.

6:43 AM
On the Coke side, I was a fan of Coke Black (which was Coke mixed with coffee, somehow deliciously), Enviga (carbonated green tea drink) and Red Vault. All have gone away, heh.
Admittedly I could see the first two having more of a niche market, but Red Vault clearly trumps Green Vault, so I have no idea what they were thinking there.

Interesting, I didn't catch Coke Black.
Well, the whole Vault thing is just chasing a market.

Yeah, that's true.

Hmmm... I didn't think that Americans were that obsessed with their soft drinks :P

There was a big hubbub over here regarding some alcoholic energy drink. I guess the college students really liked it or something.

I spend an abnormally large amount of time drinking things.
@GeorgeMarian Ah yeah, we had that over here too, Four Lokos or whatever.

6:48 AM
@TimStone Well, I just spent 4 hours a few days back drinking tea, so not that different, eh?

I dunno what the issue was, college students drink alcohol, no matter how hard you try to stop it. GTF over it and drop the drinking age back to 18. sheesh.
@YiJiang How is that a surprise? We invented the things. :)

@YiJiang It's hard to get decent tea here, otherwise I might drink that more often.

@TimStone I can send over a box of Oolong, if you want :P

Sounds tempting, heh. :P
@GeorgeMarian Well, in the case of those drinks, it actually is pretty bad to drink them no matter what age you are, heh. :P

AFK for a bit, just gotta give the gf some of my time.

6:52 AM
Heheh, enjoy.

@TimStone Agreed, but you can't really stop people from being stupid. :)

That's true.

2 hours later…
Wes
8:57 AM
@PopularDemand The sonatype books are actually very good. May not be an idiots guide. sonatype.com/books.html require registration to download the pdf

5 hours later…
1:35 PM
Here drinking age is 16. Just sayin'

2:03 PM
@radp Funny, because at 16, red wine taste like soy sauce mixed with vinegar
Which is disgusting, if you've never tasted either of those
I assume <del>wine</del> alcohol actually gets tasty when you're older?

2:19 PM
status-norepro

@radp Maybe I should have some of this "beer" thing everyone here is going on about instead

2:43 PM
@YiJiang Beer has its places, wine has its places and they don't overlap much
I'd rather have wine with fish or meat and beer on pizza or more casual food.

I'm commenting on how alcoholic drinks taste to me - ie. kind of disgusting, which is quite different from what everyone else here thinks, apparently

@YiJiang I've never really liked alcohol, though my experiences are only 3 fold and not exactly the best of experiences
First exposure was a cooking alcohol that was not cooked long enough to denature it. I couldn't really tell, but it was strong enough to get some people drunk.
Second exposure was Hennessy. I think I can leave it at that.
It doesn't even look enticing, so I never really understood the attraction of a drink which seems unappetizing and which tends to result in more harm than good
