Anyone here use Feedly on Firefox?

Not I, sorry.

Well, if someone that does happens to notice this, I was wondering if they've also noticed a change in its log-in behavior.
I guess I could double check to see if's somehow relate to Minefield, but that sounds a lot like work. :)

Hey, Markdown is now supported in 102content.com/triton
You might need to wait a second and reload the page to get all the updated Javascript
I'll add something telling you that a new version is available later

@Chacha102 What's this?

My Note Taking Application

6:19 AM
OIC
Eennteresting...

Haha! Now if your version of Triton gets updated, it notifies you that you should refresh
Right now it is just an Alert box... but I will make that experience nicer

what are you using @Chacha102 it looks a lot like wave

What am I using? I don't understand

His brain. :P
@Chacha102 Very nice.

lol

6:25 AM
It is written in HTML, CSS and Javascript

i meant are youi using the wave protocol ?
or something

no
Bah .. the latest version has some stuff broken..

ah ok

there we go
I really need to get a good versioning system going for this
and a deployment script of some sort

whats the back end ?

6:28 AM
backend?
There is no backend..

:D databases ?
ah ok

Powered by HTML5 Localstorage
Thus, all your notes and everything are tied to your specific browser

i see

Not ideal, but it works for me at the current moment
Once the UI and stuff gets finished, my next step is a Syncing module
Which will give you a single user id and allow you to configure multiple browsers to all sync with that user id

have the closed the google wave api's ?

6:31 AM
The biggest problem is that I'm trying to figure out how to deal with conflicts
It is not Google Wave..

you mean multiple people editing the same doc ?
yeah i know .. i know

Speaking of Google Wave, it's been opensourced.

No. Say you have Browser A and Browser B
Both are offline
Browser A edits something.
Browser B edits something.
Both of them come online.
Which version is correct?

yeah thats what im saying this conflict resolution is solved in the wave protocol :)

Wave does conflict resolution by making things so up-to-date that you can't possibly have conflict
But also, my application works completely offline
Google Wave doesn't
therefore, the conflict resolution solution that Wave has won't work in my scenario

6:34 AM
Are the two browsers used by different users?

naah they are on the same pc

Yes and no.
The document is tied to the same user

Then, I'd suggest a message and let the user decide.

That is what I'm thinking
Well, I'm thinking some sort of revision system, and having it put both into the history
However I'm also trying to think of a very simple, not necessarily perfect solution that can be implemented quickly

Yah, that's a good idea, too.
@Chacha102 That was my thinking.

6:39 AM
Either way, first things first, I need to make sure it works completely on FF 3.6 and FF 4, as well as get rid of the other things on my issues list (github.com/chacha/Triton)

@GeorgeMarian - Where is the source?

@Moshe My great skill with designing software? :D
@Moshe OH! You mean the Google Wave source?

I should probably take a good hard look at the Syncing before implementing it. It would be very good if I could check if a post needs to be updated before actually sending it accross
The best way is probably going to be taking all the posts inside of a thread, glueing them together and SHA1ing them
Then just compare the resulting SHAs
if the server matches the client, no need to update

user image
2

the other methodology is checking when the threads were last updated ... but I think hashes will end up being better

6:49 AM
for @drachenstern lol

@Chacha102 Probably, you can have all sorts of issues with timestamps.

I think Git uses hashes to decide what content it needs to update...

I think you're correct. It certainly uses lots of hashes.

hmm
I might have to use both
Hashing to tell if the content is different, and then the modified times to figure out which is more recent
now I just have to figure out how to make the timestamps consistent and we're all good

@Chacha102 Ah, good point.

6:53 AM
Yeah .. time is going to be the critical thing in here..
Which just tells me that the revision system is going to be crucial
so I'm probably better off designing a revision system and then the syncing system
because if I have a revision system, it isn't as bad when I screw up something as the user can just go in and say which revision they want.

Heh, sounds like a bit of a Pandora's Box. :)

I didn't want to build the Revision system yet .. but I guess I'm going to have to..
I actually have a really neat UI idea where the user clicks arrows on the sides of the post, and the next revision slides in from off-screen

Interesting.

kinda like Apple's Cover Flow, but as a timeline
at any rate, I'm off to bed
good night

8:19 AM
@jin so did I. Is it a new badge?

Jin
@Wes yes

Wes
Okay that explains it. Just logged in saw I'd a new badge checked the criteria. Was wondering why I didn't get et a week ago.
@Reno thats not really NSFW

@Wes Depends on how closely you look.

8:38 AM
Hrm, I feel like there are a number of organizational issues with this code... sighs

Wes
@TimStone do share

Eh, it's complicated.

@TimStone That's pretty much the point.

Indeed

you should find an implementation of GoTo in that code somewhere

8:50 AM
Heh, my code isn't that bad ;)

9:02 AM
No, NO. I am not watching a "Mr. T" infomercial for microwave cookware.

9:19 AM
@DanGrossman you aren't. But send a link please

It's on my TV, not the web

9:30 AM
Hrm, Amazon RDS is not going to work unless I run at least two servers. Having the DB stop responding for 30 minutes a night for a backup is far too long.
That brings it from $210/mo to $420/mo per DB server, after discounts for prepaying yearly...

9:59 AM

Is it sad that there are more people earning the talkative badge on Meta than SO proper?

They're pretty close, and we had some reasonably high volume user-testing that probably contributes to a lot of the meta badges.

Also, will this generate a sudden flood of "Star this !@#$ message so that I can get that damn badge!"?

If I restrict to messages > mid-Sep, then 171 (chat.MSO) vs 281 (chat.SO)
so indeed, it looks like a lot was from early meta visitors

Huh!? The only person who has gotten Talkative on chat.WA is @balpha
Explain yourself @RebeccaChernoff!

12:30 PM
@YiJiang No.
It's just the way it should be!

@radp Hey, can you get me a list of valid YouTube video URLs?

@YiJiang um, youtu.be/<id> or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<id>

@radp Does http://www.youtube.com/v/<code> work?

@YiJiang Yes, but you only get the flash player.

@radp Okay, nevermind that then

Kev
12:34 PM
@GregHewgill - no joy. tried "user:me [iis] [iis7]" but it shows results where I've never answer a post

@YiJiang hmmm... I've tidied up some data left over from the import; @RebeccaChernoff is now eligible
(I've just reattached 75k messages that didn't have obvious owners when we did the migration)

yeah, why not; whatever...

@Marc we have a more powerful tool now

Be careful or we'll migrate your reps to Bicycles or something.

meh; I can migrate myself - but I'll still be site-admin... mwahahahahaha

I am excited to announce that Stack Overflow is doubling the size the of the sysadmin team. We have picked up another member of the community and that member is George Beech. The regular users of Server Fault probably know him as Zypher:

From looking at George’s answers on Server Fault and chatting with him in the Server Fault chat rooms I can tell you that George is a very knowledgeable sysadmin and also a cool guy that I am pumped to start working with. On Server Fault I have seen questions about server to admin ratios. I tend to agree that you can not prescribe a number. However, for a company with a popular web site I say at least two. I think all sysadmins should have a sysadmining buddy. Also between trying to exemplary sysadmins, writing blog posts, supporting employees, and dealing with the problems such as attacks on your website being a solo sysadmin is not ideal. Having two sysadmins is probably the most important place to have redundancy in your infrastructure. Lastly, a second person as great as George is going to provide all sorts of ideas and experience beyond what I could come up with. …

no way to hide, Beech Boy!

3:06 PM
hahahaha
oh yea ... wide open company
<strike>sigh</strike> WOOHOOO
:-D

Hehe.
I dunno if I like it, but I figured there was only one way to find out!

@RebeccaChernoff very true ... there are things that make it very worth it !

@Zypher Like meeting Michigan?

I will probably play more video games in the next 72 hours than in the previous 2 months combined.

Hello
How do I write a deploy script?

@TylerChacha What're you deploying?

I want the script to take the latest version of github.com/chacha/Triton and deploy it to 102content.com/triton

4:12 PM
@TylerChacha if this was a super user chat room, you would've just seen a clippy

I have stumped @PopularDemand! This is a good day

@TylerChacha I have fooled someone into drastically overestimating my abilities! This is a good day.

Hey, does anyone here use Firefox?

ja

Negatory.

4:25 PM
I need someone to test if 102content.com/triton works in Firefox

store data on my computer ... i dunno about that
this is a link off meta

It is a note taking application
so, does it work?
and if it doesn't work, and then you press refresh, does it work?

@TylerChacha Yes.

I believe that the immediate Store Data on Computer is because it uses the Application Cache
I'm not sure if it is also detecting my use of localStorage..
I'll need to play around with that.
Obviously I want to make it clear the purpose of the application before it prompts you to store files and such

@Chacha102 seems to work for me

4:29 PM
Sweet. I can mark that off my list of things to do
lol, on meta @ing Marc Gravell is the 2nd most active room on Meta...

People actually joined that room?

@TylerChacha not most active, just recently active. in the past 3 hours only that room and this one had activity.

Can you ping people if they've never been in a room? I thought that was changed

Hi @MarcGravell

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I don't think it works like that.

Does SO log IP addresses?

@Moshe Yes

So can we get a history of IPs?
I know SO does show the last IP in my profile under my avatar.

Q: I's like to see the last IP that my account was used from, please!

MosheI think that as a matter of security, (in the "FireSheep" age), I'd like to see the last IP address from which my account was accessed next to my name, somewhere in the top bar. I'd also ideally like a history of my IP addresses (available only to me) in my account summary. Thoughts?

You can't see other users' IPs, and we can't see yours.

Naturally, that makes sense.
I want access to that though.
The necessity is illustrated by the question before.

you aint gonna get it...

@Moshe All the question before shows is that people should be more careful on public networks.

@TylerChacha - It's worth asking.
@PopularDemand - still. A WEP network is easy target and those can be a home network as set up by an ISP.
It's not just public wifi that's susceptible.

Q: How can I use Stack Overflow's wiki features?

NikkiI am new to Stack Overflow (and your planet) so I would like to ask how and where can I use Stack Overflow's wiki features?

Is FireSheep open source?

Ha, not only is the answer yes, I can't visit the FireSheep home page or repo at work.
Because, I guess, they don't want me... stealing passwords from the guy in the next cube over the nonexistent wireless network? I just wanted to get a better understanding of how cookies work....

Hey everyone. A quick hello, I can't stay long
@Fosco you around?

'Ello

@TheUnhandledException A quick hello to you, too, then. (Actually... that may be the longest hello I've written in a while.)

How are you two doing today @Tim and @PopularDemand?

@TheUnhandledException The short answer is "busy."

@PopularDemand man do I know that feeling. :-/

5:35 PM
I'm a bit stressed out over how these code fixes are coming along, heh.

@TimStone Another feeling I can relate to, sadly

Hey there @Rebecca. How's your Friday?

Not too shabby.

Anyone here know anything about XLST, and might be interested in a small job? It's not definite, I haven't approved the project with my boss nor have we even approached the client with it, but I know nothing about XLST and want to present a plan to our CEO, to see if he's interested in offering it to the client.
I just have zero time to learn XLST at the moment
I'd far prefer to work with someone I know and trust!

5:40 PM
> and trust
Doesn't this rule out everyone here? (;

@TheUnhandledException Wow, it's been a while since I've used XSLT. I'm not interested in a side job, but I would try to help if you ended up having to do it yourself.

Hah ;)

@RebeccaChernoff Uhhhh, good point! Offer retracted! ;-)

We rely on some XSLT for some things, but unfortunately I'm not the one that handles it.

@PopularDemand Thanks. I am already falling further behind in my work each day, the earliest I could start on this would be January, the client isn't willing to wait more than a week!
I have no idea if XLST can even do what she wants, she wants us to import a CSV file into our eCommerce system, but we only have an XML import engine. I was thinking, MS Excel export to XML, use XLST to transform from Excel XML to our XML

5:44 PM
Is your XML import engine DOM or SAX?

@TheUnhandledException Hm, I don't know anything about Excel XML. When I used it, it was for applying styles to HTML for display based on XML.
Should work in theory, though.

@PopularDemand Yeah that's what I've heard is that it most often applies an HTML style to XML data, but I thought it could also transform XML to different XML.

@TheUnhandledException It can.

I fear our XML may be too complicated. Or rather, Excel's too different.

You can, but it's almost 100% not the easiest way to accomplish this task, heh.

5:46 PM
XML --> HTML is a special case (actually XML --> XHTML)

Since this is an eCommerce system our XML product nodes have child nodes for each product choice, tired pricing, images, etc. The client's having difficult understanding why we can't "just import the CSV!". Specifically, a CSV file is 2-d, and product have a lot more complexity than that! (a product in our database is spread across 6 db tables)

@TheUnhandledException Solution: make simpler products.

@TheUnhandledException ah yes, the oft-echoed just export all product data into an excel so that we can look at it shit.

Hello

5:49 PM
'Ello

@TylerChacha 'ello

@TheUnhandledException So your XML parser communicates with another interface which actually imports the data (to the database), right?

@Sathya haha, yeah. And the oft-echoed ""I can't understand! Why can't you just built it? It wouldn't be that difficult!"

@TheUnhandledException yes. to supplement - "It's all on one place on the screen, just export it!"
/facepalm
@TheUnhandledException you remember I had asked your help on regex ?

5:51 PM
@TimStone our XML parser walks through the XML nodes and builds instances of the classes for each kind of data, and saves those to the database. so when it find a <product> node it does new ECommerce_Product() and then for each sub node, <description>, <base_price> etc, it sets the approprate member variable. Then it saves the object
@Sathya I sure do

Print screen
Retrieve from printer via robot (Rovio is recommended)
Drop into scanner
Use OCR
Export successful!
3

@TheUnhandledException well now you know what I was working on. Export =.=

@PopularDemand LOL

Ah, so it creates persistent objects directly. Hmm..

5:52 PM
@TimStone <product> nodes have a node, <choices>, which each have <choice> nodes containing the choices and their prices, E.G. should this product have gold lettering, should it be gift wrapped, do they want the red or the blue version, etc

wants the orange version.

@RebeccaChernoff : unsupported!

If you're the one doing it, and this isn't a common procedure, IMO a small ETL process would be much less painful. If it's more common, and regardless of who's doing it, having a utility to convert from the CSV to XML will definitely be easier than an XSLT from Excel output.

@RebeccaChernoff $choice = new ECommerce_ProductChoice('Color','Orange',10.95); $product->addCHoice($choide);

This is closer to my kind of work, so if you have details I'm sure we can get you a plan for a solution. ;)

5:54 PM
@TheUnhandledException You misspelled.. a lot..

$10.95?! Frickin' ripoff!

@TimStone Excel is a utility to convert CSV to XML. It's just... really bloated.

@RebeccaChernoff He didn't specify the currency. Assume Yen and roll with it.
@PopularDemand I don't consider it effective for that purpose. :P

@TimStone \o/

@TylerChacha I did. Are you going to throw a syntax error at me? :-)

5:56 PM
No, none of those are causes for Syntax errors... but you're gonna get a ton of Undefined variable warnings..

@TimStone This is true. I will ask my boss if we're even looking for help with this and will contact you off... no, I'll find you on here since I have no contact info for you... if we actually intend to move forward :-)
@TylerChacha addCHoice($choide); would actually throw an exception because addChoice would whine that it wasn't supplied an instance of ECommerce_ProductChoice
but you're night, no syntax errors
man with @TylerChacha and @RebeccaChernoff I think I need to change my name back to "Josh", LOL

Well before you get that exception PHP would complain about $choide not being defined...

@TylerChacha and my framework would email me :-)
