Q: Is "++l *= m" undefined behaviour?

LawrenceI have started studying about C++0x. I came across the follow expression somewhere: int l = 1, m=2; ++l *= m; I have no idea whether the second expression has well defined behavior or not. So I am asking it here. Isn't it UB? I am just eager to know.

@radp win

@rchern now to get it pinned ;)

Argh, definitely passed out a bit. Whoops.

@TimStone Minecraft? :-)

@TimStone - welcome back

12:45 AM
No, just...sleepy. :P
@AidenBell Thanks

I know the feeling, I could use a nap. But my code is nowhere near done :-(

Yeah, today probably should have been far more productive than it was...but I got distracted being confused by whatever the heck was going on in here today, heh.

@TimStone @TheUnhandledException - sometimes, sitting and doing nothing counts as code meditation. I would take 2 days doing nothing and 1 day productive "aha" coding than 3 days of frustration

True that @AidenBell
I could use some of that now. I am baffled as to why $this->moduleConfig->apiKeys[0] is the empty string in one function and a valid API key in another function. =p

@TheUnhandledException - I find it helps battle procrastination. That could almost be a joke, but isn't

12:50 AM
I feel like I might do a little more sitting around doing nothing than I should. ;)

Though at this rate if I'm ever in @rchern's position, my task should be a lot easier.

@TheUnhandledException sounds like one of those "why isn't my state doing ...." .... 10 days later ... "This could do with refactoring"

@AidenBell Yeah, a lot like that. I'm sure this is a typo somewhere

@TheUnhandledException I had a problem like that. Then I found out that Firebug was lying to me and showing me the current state instead of the state as it was when I printed out the information.
I then started hating Firebug.

LOL. This appears in view source, src="/path/to/interface?apikey="> so I know it's empty
yet the interface that loops through all API keys shows it's there, as does my built in PHP console
Giving away a small trade secret here, but building in a console where I can execute arbitrary code on any of our running sites is soooo useful
properly protected so only my staff can access it of course ;-)

@TimStone hrm?

12:56 AM
@rchern I figure if I get very little done, if I need to be replaced the instruction list will be quite short.

hahahaha

I can't imagine that'd be a good thing, but I'm trying to find solace in my laziness nevertheless.

yeah...
But hey, at least I'm doing it because I chose to leave, instead of getting let go.

That's true. :) Your new job will be far away from any mentioning of an iframe? Heheh ;)

Hehe!

12:59 AM
More jQuery, less pain!

Cool! This actually works!
Chat works on IE7 \o/ Hugs and kisses @MarcGravell and @balpha!

Hooray!

And thank goodness editing works too :P

Ah good. Not only has Marc been pinged into oblivion today, he's also been sexually assaulted. What a day.

@radp You should have the wheel grab it's data from the API, so you don't have to constantly update it

Firefox flicking has now migrated me to Chromium

\o/

/o\

LOL!
I notice user info boxes now say "user profile on meta.stackoverflow.com" instead of "user profile on parent site". Does that change indicate anything meaningful under the hood?

It means chat.SE happened (;

1:07 AM
(That is to say, something I missed in my absence?)

(As parent sites are user-dependent)

@rchern I've been there before. Does that mean all the chats are unified now?

SO and MSO aren't. But each user can select which site is their "parent" account for the chat, so the wording just makes it more explicit.

Any idea why I can't upvote anything right now?

@rchern SU and SF are now?

1:09 AM
aye

Huh, I'll have to check that out

@TimStone funny since I was part of that convo and I'm actually being quite productive (until tomorrow when my boss comes in and shreds up all my work and says I did it totally backwards ...)

@MikeClark On MSO or SO?
@drachenstern Well, there was everything before that too. I really only have myself to blame, but I like to insert a subtle excuse in there every now and then. ;)

@TimStone oh well I did only get here at noonish I suppose
but yeah, I kinda wasted like ... ______ hours I'm sure ;) at least I don't have MC to blame ;)

That is admittedly also partially to blame...

1:15 AM
@TimStone I think @MikeClark left huh?

I click the up-vote-arrow, and nothing happens. :( -- on SO

It should show something beside the arrow if you have maybe exhausted your votes or something
which question are you trying to upvote? and answer or question or comment?
How many votes do you think you've done today?

@MikeClark Did you try a hard refresh? Usually there's something misbehaving about your JavaScript when that happens.
Though usually other things start to not work then either.

@TimStone I think he has a different problem but doesn't realize it. I agree hard-refresh, but I'ld like to see a link too ;)
@MikeClark are you having issues with chat too?

Tim: thanks! Forced reload fixed it. Should have guessed. Cache clear probably would have done it too.
I think chat is working fine, sorry for the slow responses, I was testing to see if voting worked in a different browser.

1:20 AM
Ah, good stuff! :)

> visited 246 days, 40 consecutive
I'm making my way steadily to a new badge :D ... reckon I can successfully pull it off with Xmas and New Years looming?
according to WolframAlpha, today + 60 days = Monday, January 31, 2011

thinks 2011 is gonna be a great year. (:

@rchern I am very hopeful!
@drachenstern I am 82% there!

@rchern indeed. So where r u going to be transitioning to? (specifics not necessary, vague generalities accepted, so long as they are more specific than a state or another city or somewhere in the US ;) )
@TheUnhandledException NICE!
@rchern will you still be in web stuffs?

@rchern If I get everything done on time and all of this expected business rolls through, I'm going to have to agree with that prediction.
@drachenstern Hm, that probably would have been my answer. ;)

1:26 AM
@TimStone hence my cutting it off ahead of time ;)

@TheUnhandledException 85% on meta

@drachenstern Yeah - and staying in St. Louis.

Hahah, good call. :P

nice
so that's like doubleplusgood right?

Indeed, I'm excited. (:
Gotta run to the store, back in a bit.

1:27 AM
Then I'm doubleplusexcited for you ;) :D
cya

Good for you @rchern!
(About the work news, not going to the store ;-)

@TheUnhandledException The store bit would be an accomplishment too, for me, so she can have a cookie for that too. :P

@TimStone For me too, at this point, but for different reasons. @rchern mind picking up some #4 coffee filters, milk and sugar for me? I'm kinda stuck at the moment... ;-)
@AidenBell I was wrong, my issue is not a typo, it's actually a semi-major flaw in our config storage engine. But there's a workaround and since I don't feel like taking on new work, I'm going to take a page from Jeff Atwood's book and calling this bug
status-bydesign

@TheUnhandledException Oh, what was your car-related question by the way? I may or may not know an automotive repair shop owner who I could proxy the question to if need be.
@TheUnhandledException You're learning well ;)

@TheUnhandledException I have a lot of those ;)
@TimStone yeah I was curious what the problem was but figured he had bigger fish to fry. Come on Josh, we can probably help hack something

1:31 AM
@TimStone I googled it, I believe the power steering pump ate itself

@TheUnhandledException you don't use twitter do you?

@TheUnhandledException You haven't heard about his hardcore setup?

Turning the steering wheel generates no movement in the wheels, but instead a high pitched squealing noise :-(
@drachenstern Twiwhat?
:-)

@TheUnhandledException lmao

No, I don't use Twitter ;-)

I don't tweet or twat or whatever you do on Twitter

@TimStone No, I haven't. I normally only read his twitter feed or codinghorror when linked to in here or on meta peoper...

I'm just trying to be helpful, when's the last time you lost The Game? You're welcome #TheGame

@TimStone In other words, he's not a Twit :-)

RT @cmille19 I hate using forums other than StackOverFlow or ServerFault. MSDN should just outsource their forums (cc @codinghorror)
great article, if the blink is a bit annoying (wait till you see, it makes sense) techcrunch.com/2010/12/02/…

@TheUnhandledException Exactly. ;)

1:38 AM
@drachenstern I get no love ... NO LOVE!

Sorry, it wasn't that I didn't appreciate it, it's just that I've run out of witty replies during the course of the day.

LOL
@drachenstern Sorry, it went over my head :-(

@TimStone lol, I don't doubt it ...

That's right: you make the money. Make sure the money don't make you!

1:41 AM
Josh, you're gonna love me after this one, it's doubleplusgood I promise you, plus, you'll find yourself thinking of it in the future randomly (as I just did)
The Game is a mental game where the objective is to avoid thinking about The Game itself. Thinking about The Game constitutes a loss, which, according to the rules of The Game, must be announced each time it occurs. It is impossible to win The Game; players can only attempt to avoid losing for as long as they possibly can. The Game has been variously described as pointless and infuriating, or as a challenging game that is fun to play. Gameplay Rules There are three rules to The Game: # Everyone in the world is playing The Game. (Sometimes narrowed to: "Everybody in the world who kno...

@drachenstern LOL. I find myself thinking about everything randomly. That is, in fact, how most of my code gets done ;-)

lol, tell me about it, I do the same thing
@TimStone > Actually,Contra3 explained on Reddit, "I’m a fan of non sequiturs."

Good ol' Bambi

> However, one reported variation states that The Game ends when the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom announces on television that "The Game is up."
LOL

lol, yeah idk
ok time for going home

1:47 AM
@drachenstern be safe, catch you later!

See ya later

@TheUnhandledException I'm gonna try. Hope you catch a break sometime in the next decade ;)
@TimStone I believe you'll at least chat with me later ;)

@drachenstern Thanks. Me too! And I hope it doesn't take 10 years! ;-)

Probably so. ;)

@TheUnhandledException >_<

1:52 AM
@rchern is that an ASCII art #4 coffee filter!?!? THANK YOU!

Looks like she might have forgotten to put that stuff you desperately needed on her list.

Forgotten. Yeah, that's it.

Looks like I'm in for a brisk morning jog tomorrow =b

q:

@TheUnhandledException At least the cold air will brace you for the productive day to come.

1:54 AM
Maybe that's what I need for increased productivity, more cold air! Like a server...

I'm generally more productive the colder it gets, for whatever reason.

Ah, @Tim, I see you're moving right up the chat roster, you've passed Arda Xi and slid into the #7 spot! You'll be at #5 at no time as Ivo and tzenes don't chat here anymore

I wonder what I should file chat under on my time sheet ;)

Inspiration.

Professional Development? Or maybe Peer review...
I think @Chacha102 should make me an owner of this room since I'm the #1 most active user :-D
And I have renamed myself to the Tavern That Could Have Been

1:58 AM
Hahah, "The Little Tavern that Could"

ROFLOL
Which reminds me, the 30 day period after changing my name has long since passed, I should have changed back to @Josh by now but I just can't make myself do it, I've become too fond of my new nic :-)

Erm, there's a badge named Talkative?

@rchern What?

Hahahah
I just got that too
> Posted 10 messages, with 1 or more starred, in chat

2:00 AM
ROFL

They do love us!

Where's the silver and gold versions????
I'll bet I can get them before @rchern!
Wait, no, I take that back
> 274 Users earned this badge. Recently awarded to:
That's far too many. We need a more elite version also!

> Oymonger : Posted at least 20 Oy messages, with over 50% starred, in chat

@TimStone YOU HAVE TO REQUEST THAT TOMORROW ON META

...

2:03 AM
OK. I am going to make some dinner. Catch you guys later!

Heheh ;)

Q: SO: adding comments with iPhone is a slow process

ring0The input of a comment on SO with the iPhone is very slow. It seems there is a flaw in the Javascript, either too complex for the iPhone, or buggy? (using iPhone 4)

This confuses me.
I've never noticed an issue.

@rchern I've noticed it sometimes.
Though Jeff was always going on about it, not sure what that was about.
Seriously Firebug?

is tempted to add a comment to Jeff's answer: [status-norepro]

Do it! ;)
I used to be able to see handler functions all prettified by hovering over the function link in the DOM tab.
Now the tooltip just tells me what file it came from.
Because clicking through to the one-line, minified JavaScript is really going to let me inspect that function..

2:13 AM
@TheUnhandledException I don't think my Oy posts get starred at a rate of 50% or more.
SADNESS

I don't even want to know what my rate is.

hmmm

Ugh, customer service nightmare. MailChimp is blowing up all over my customers and they all think I'm a spammer now.

Uh oh, what went wrong with MailChimp?

A: Add a <spoiler> tag that makes hidden-until-you-click text

Kevin MontroseThis has been implemented. The syntax is >! Spoiler text! Examples Spoiler text! This is not yet reflected in the preview pane. Essentially, a blockquote where each line begins with a ! will be a spoiler. Spoilers have the same text color as background color, but can be revealed ...

I had the registratino form of one of my websites allow signup to an e-mail newsletter. It has one line of code that uses MailChimp's API to add them to the list, which results in MailChimp sending the new customer an e-mail confirming they want to subscribe.

2:20 AM
Hm, I'm not sure I like the mouse hover...glad to see the feature nevertheless.

Apparently MailChimp is sending them like 20 copies of the mail, several per hour

Oh...that's not good, heh.

I removed the API code from my site and people are still writing in saying they're getting confirmation mails
so I have no control, MailChimp is open 9-5...
Maybe they'll help me out... in 12 hours

2:48 AM
Mmmmmm. Nothing like a warm bowl of chili on a cold evening to soothe the soul!
Wouldn't you agree @rchern?

What could cause my user bar badge readout to not match the badge break down on my profile?
At the top of meta i have 2S and 13B, but on my profile page there are only 13

Good question @NathanTaylor...

It is
@NathanTaylor I see 13 for you: 11 bronze, 2 silver

@TheUnhandledException chili, Chili, CHILI!

2:51 AM
A very elite bronze badge.

@TheUnhandledException If you look at his information in the user list though it shows 2/13
Hmm

@rchern It was delicious. Not mine, my roommate made it, but I helped. We made enough for an army over a month ago and now we can pull some out of the freezer whenever we want

I hope we get random badge whores coming in here and trying to be clever just to get that badge now.

@TheUnhandledException Where do you see that?

@TimStone It sure does! @Nathan ask on Meta proper and be sure to include frehand circles!
@NathanTaylor At the bottom of your user page there's 13 badges. But on your chat user page there's 15
@mootinator I hope not. It would seriously distract from the intelligent discussion we strive for in here.

2:54 AM
@TheUnhandledException Oy

@TheUnhandledException I'm going to suspect that deleted thingadongdongs are responsible, but asking on MSO would definitely be the way to go, heh. :P

...must...not...star...thaaaattt...

@TheUnhandledException So then, which count is correct?

@mootinator Careful, I'm going to start charging royalties.

2:55 AM
@TimStone You're not supposed to lose badges, ever...

Must...hold...back...snicker...

@NathanTaylor Hmmm. Another good question!

@TheUnhandledException The numbers should match up too, but..

@rchern Hmm. Could you call the service Rchern OyWords and only charge for starred oys?

@NathanTaylor Review the badge list, do you think you're missing two bronze badges?

2:57 AM
Fixed.

@Nathan your SO profile's associated Meta account shows 2/13 also:
Hm, I wonder...

@TheUnhandledException The WOB says that it's @rchern's fault, so everything is backwards by default anyway.
