2:00 PM
You're using all your bandwidth on chat

@DanGrossman Once it's loaded it's no big deal.

It's all right - most of the messages are small - the problem is whether the connection is stable, and latency is low
Oh, and nobody posts images of course :P

@YiJiang Opera Turbo should compress images somewhat
Let me check if it's enabled tho

"Breaking news: Joseph's arm has fallen off and is laying in the hay in the nativity scene. This proves the mannequins are not real."
I think something's wrong with this news anchor

@ircmaxell oh lord so many people drowning
(cmon chat.SE, load this thing! You know you want to!)

I want to see Tron. Now, not in 4 hours. Movie theater fail.

@DanGrossman be glad you can see it today. Germany has to wait until January 27 :(

2:12 PM
@balpha, for oneboxed messages, is the raw content/url stored someone or would I need to parse that out from the various onebox types?
also, g'morning y'all. (;

@balpha Cool! That would be great for the userscripters

Hrm. Thought of a problem. An explicit reply that's a onebox doesn't have span.mention which is what I'm currently using to detect messages that should show a desktop notification.

@balpha arrest? Execution, says I! Let a reindeer-powered drone take care of this one.

2:25 PM
Sigh, chat.SE won't load

@radp Yeah, the HTML5 support in Opera Mini isn't quite there yet

Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected end of input (master-chat.js:343)
@YiJiang Using no-image Chrome for chat now.
@YiJiang tries a shift-reload

@radp That's odd then. Maybe the assets aren't loaded properly?
Check if the StackAuth iframe is been loaded correctly

I can't get chat.SE on my iphone again. ):

@RebeccaChernoff What would be so hard about parsing out @xxx?

2:28 PM
Won't log me in even if I follow the instructions on the global auth help page. It just taunts me with ok! on all the tests >_<

@RebeccaChernoff Push the button! (← webapps link)
(Humming to the Chemical Brothers is compulsory thorough the ghetto login process.)

@YiJiang I was doing a .find(".mention") on .message rather than parsing out text.

@RebeccaChernoff Do a filter with a regex

Yup.
Just messier.

Oh, it looks like I was logged out of chat.SE too..hrm

2:39 PM
Also, another problem is that the livequery plugin processes all existing messages as well, so any @mentions present in the initial page load will also load desktop notifications.
Heh.
@TimStone Yeah, I was overnight as well.

shakes fist at it and logs back in

Every time this year, I wish I'd brought wpa cracking stuff with me

Morning everyone!

How are you this morning @Rebecca? Isn't it early for someone without a job to be up? :-)

...I wasn't trying to say anything funny or "oy" worthy there...

My sister had to go to work an hour and a half ago. Woke me up. ):

Oh -- that explains it -- Ug

So, instead of sleeping in I'm adding desktop notification support for Chrome users on @mentions to the userscript.

2:50 PM
nice!

@RebeccaChernoff Awesome, this is a more productive use of a programmer's time anyway!

@TheUnhandledException Right! Who needs this sleep thingadongdong anyway?

I just read a blurb this morning that said computer engineers suffer from insomnia at a 30% greater rate than the rest of the general population

@TheUnhandledException Did you see my mention? :)

It reminded me of @TimStone

2:52 PM
@TheUnhandledException The remainder of the population catches up with disco

@TheUnhandledException Hahah...I was sleeping nicely this morning until I got a phone call :P

@TimStone Was it from @Rebecca asking why you weren't on chat? ;-)
@radp It's like a trail of breadcumbs! Follow the link trail to see how far the rabbit hole goes...

2:55 PM
Hah, I don't think I was gone so long anyone was out looking for me ;)

oh haha
@radp I actually did see the original message by @balpha in the list of starred messages

I'm very very sure this is already implemented. Am I right?

Q: Answer question, hit submit and seeing "sorry, this question has been deleted"

marcogI've twice now in the last 24 hours had a user delete his/her question while I was busy typing up an answer. I had no indication while writing the answers that the question was deleted while writing out my answer. This is obviously hugely frustrating. Can we perhaps get a notification that the q...

@TheUnhandledException so now you can do proper markdown parsing :)

@YiJiang No, I don't think so (only when new answers are posted, and only sometimes)..but it's been requested at least three times.

@YiJiang For closed questions, definitely.
Self-deleted questions I don't think so.

2:57 PM
Oh, for closed questions too? I guess I've never tried to answer anything I knew was getting closed. :P

@radp oh, because it's ?plain=true ?

@TheUnhandledException Yes

AHHHHH, I get it now. Thanks!

@radp Not for closed, I think - I remember that you can still post answers to closed questions as long as you can replicate all of the post variables correctly

Sorry. It's early for me this morning ;-)
That is actually helpful @radp

2:58 PM
@TimStone Really? Because I remember seeing a deleted question warning at least ones before, though not recently, so I might have been mistaken

I'm going to grab some breakfast. Catch you guys later!

> if it detects a question is closed, locked, or deleted. In this case, the answerer is now informed of a question's new status

Ah, yeah.

A: Question Answered After it was Closed?

Jarrod DixonFor this edge case, we didn't want to be too strict on users that were in the process of submitting an answer. As Robert Harvey stated perfectly, we will still accept an answer to a closed question if it was started before the closing occurred. However, we also do not want new answers to closed...

He mentioned deleted, so I think it's already implemented

Yeah, I found something else along those lines too, so I guess it is.
The check only happens every 45 seconds though, so maybe the timing was just off or something for that person. shrugs

3:03 PM
@YiJiang Yes, for answers too. "This question has been closed and accepts no further answers."

@radp Yeah, the answer mentioned closed.

I didn't try submitting the answer after this message was shown, but the message definitely was shown.

I did remember a bug report for a test answer posted 18 hours after the question was closed, by someone replicating the POST variable. Though both my memory and SO's search system sucks, so...
Ah, here's the one:

@radp That... looks amazingly similar to my attempt at downloading a YouTube video through Tor while in China

@YiJiang Yes, but that's limited by the maximum size of DNS requests IIRC :)
(AFAIK Tor piggybacks on DNS to transfer data.)

@radp I thought it was just a chain of encrypted gateways run by volunteers in non-censored countries

@YiJiang ...piggybacking on DNS

anybody know what Diaspora is? Is it a desktop app or web app?

4:38 PM
@RebeccaChernoff It's an Open Source version of Facebook if I can remember it correctly
Don't know much other than that

Diaspora (stylized DIASPORA*) is a free personal web server that implements a distributed social networking service. The project is currently under development by Dan Grippi, Maxwell Salzberg, Raphael Sofaer, and Ilya Zhitomirskiy, students at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The group received donations in excess of $200,000 via Kickstarter. The developers aim for it to be a decentralized alternative to social network services like Facebook. In an interview with the New York Times Soafer said, "We don't need to hand our messages to a hub. What Facebook gi...
> a free personal web server

@RebeccaChernoff It's the Social Networking part that they put more emphasis on

Question got migrated from SU to WA but I'm wondering if it should've been.

@RebeccaChernoff It is, to the best of my knowledge, a Web Application
Social Networking sites aren't really desktop apps, are they?

@RebeccaChernoff It's either SF/SU (hosting it) or WA (using it)

4:42 PM

Q: Distributed nature of Diaspora

(I hoe this is the right location for this question. Apologies if it is not) So diaspora is distributed in nature with various "seed" servers (from what I understand, similar to IRC node servers) Will all users in all the various seed servers be connectable to all other users on the other seeds...

@RebeccaChernoff Not a good fit for WA - it's asking about the infrastructure behind diaspora - not about using it

@RebeccaChernoff Poor migration choice, should've been SO (asking how software can possibly work)

But I'd hate to see it bouncing around like this

I asked about it in the ask-a-su-mod room, but I'm the only one there. (;

Although the first half of the answer is on topic for your site.
And the second could be tolerated because of the first.
@RebeccaChernoff /blame @Ivo

4:46 PM
Tell me, am I the only one to see this? Seems like a part of the sprite file is missing

Let me do some digging first to find the source of the bug

In computer science and mathematics, the term full employment theorem has been used to refer to a theorem showing that no algorithm can optimally perform a particular task done by some class of professionals. The name arises because such a theorem ensures that there is endless scope to keep discovering new techniques to improve the way a specific task is done. For example, the full employment theorem for compiler writers states that there is no such thing as a perfect size-optimizing compiler, as such a compiler would have to detect non-terminating computations and reduce them to a one-inst...

Can someone write a bot that just says "Hello" to me everytime I enter the room..
That would save the rest of you the hassle, and it would make me feel good :)

Sorry, the kitten bot's only on SO chat!

7:42 PM
Why am I banned from the Kitten bot?

8:28 PM
you can write bots now?

You can always write bots
Worst case scenario, you point a camera at the screen and have a robot peck at the keyboard in response. You can always write bots.

in soviet russia, bots write you!
but is there an api or something like that for bots now?

No. But chat is pretty simple to write a bot for. You're just parsing incoming text and sending text in response. You could even write it in JavaScript and just run it as a user script in your browser window.

Allo @Pekka
Bye @Pekka (;

Hi @Rebecca :)
your @'s caught me just in time
I was about to fly out.

Everything all right in .... (looking up where @rchern lives) ?
Moscow Oblast?
Oh, Missouri

o: Moscow?
ah, hehehehe

Ahhh, because MI was already taken
I see, I see

10:09 PM
I'm actually in Kansas now. q:

Fair enough, fair enough
What time is it in Kansas?

But yes, things are good. Boring. >_< Nobody is awake/here right now.
16:10

Ah! 23:10 over here.
Snowy in Kansas?

No. Was a degree above freezing. We got quite a bit of rain.
A couple degrees colder though... ):

We have loads of snow, for the first time in ages
I'll have to wade through it a bit before I go to bed
It is a rare occasion that Meta.SO chat is this empty, isn't it?
It clearly is christmas

10:13 PM
Silly holidays. (;
I'm pretty much hanging out in an empty house until Sunday. ):
oooh, with the apple touch icon, the desktop notification looks sweet

Oh! Well, make the most of it, an empty house is the chance for some tranquility :)
I didn't feel like family holidays this year so I stayed at home, and will probably work through the holidays... I am striving for the enlightened state of unemployment in January and I have a lot of stuff to do until then :)

True. A bit too much! q:
Striving for unemployment? Hehehe

Yeah, I'm switching careers
From IT to .... something new

That's what I've been doing too. Not the 12 days of Christmas, the 12 days of unemployment.

Writing loads of applications, we'll see where life takes me.

10:18 PM
...something new?
hehe

Hehehe! Well, 12 days sounds pretty sweet
Something new = something more away from the computer
no more programming. I've been looking mostly in the tourism field here in the city
Something to put my english to some use would be nice

That would definitely be a change.

Yeah. I'll be free some time in January, but honestly I'd appreciate some time in between, haven't had a decent vacation in years
So I'm looking for jobs and applying of course, but not for the first day after my desk is empty. We shall see

Well hope it all works out for you. (:

Yeah, thanks! It definitely is exciting.
I think I'll take a walk in the snow for a while now
Merry christmas and a nice evening!
Or night, depending on your time zone.

10:23 PM
Happy December the 25th banquets

@Pekka You too, enjoy your walk! :)

I guess food is cross religion acceptable :P

Food is always acceptable :P

Hmm, what I have done to the userscript such that it thinks I've changed the entire file? |:

I don't think we're planning any indeed

@RebeccaChernoff You mean in diff? Uh oh
@radp Hm, I better send you some express mail, although I fear we may need teleportation...to Portal!

@reb Inverted smieys in all comments again

@TimStone yeah, was going to commit the desktop notifications

10:29 PM
It seems that I've finished all of the non-online achievements for NFS:HP...Wonder if I should start playing a different game now, or do some work...
@RebeccaChernoff Ack, that's uncool. It's just highlighting entire lines, or?

maybe you could start playing the game proper instead

How so? :P

I'm not going to lie, that's pretty sweet ;)

you paid to be berated by annoying teenagers
time you get your money's worth

10:31 PM
Ah, right. That's kind of why I've been avoiding online, I don't know if I have to acknowledge that people are people. :P

And yeah, says @@ -1,1238 +1,1257 @@ and then shows the whole file in red, followed by the entire new file in green.

@reb should've done smaller commits :(

I added 10 lines. |:

Hmm...

It isn't auto-formatting if I put a brace at the wrong indentation either. Hrm. jslint time!

10:36 PM
maybe the encoding changed?

Damn. Even if I reset my changes (have them elsewhere, all good), VS still won't auto-format. @TimStone what did you doooooo? (;

@RebeccaChernoff Oh, it's my fault now eh? ;)

VS could format it before I pulled your changes. q:
JSLint led me towards a few missing ; and a couple extra. VS seems happy now.

\o/
Was it my bad? :P
I don't even remember what I changed now, heheh.

Dammit, diff still says I've modified the entire file.

10:50 PM
Hmm..

Did you check in with spaces or something?
Hmm, no, looks like tabs.

I'd suspect that I mishandled the pull request, but kdiff is only looking at the file contents right?

believe so

Oh...
I see the problem.
I think..

10:57 PM
Well, the line endings are different in SEChatModifications versus SEModifications
Though I would have suspected someone would have seen this going in the other direction if it had suddenly changed..
SEModifications is CRLF and SEChatModifications is (currently at least) just LF

hrm
...the heck?

Iunno :P

I don't want to mess up the revisions listing by committing. ):

Hm, it seems like it's actually been this way for a long time, so I guess that's not the issue.

Long time in realtime or in number of commits?

11:04 PM
@RebeccaChernoff As in always, apparently :P
It's SEModifications that changed, let's find out when.
Not that it's an issue.

If I just add a random character it is fine. It is just when I type a ; or } that causes VS to format the document. But I've never had a problem with that messing with the diff before. ):

Ohhh.
Wonder if it's shoving something weird in there..
Heh, turns out that the CRLF/LF thing was my bad.
Not...sure how I didn't notice the whole file being replaced.
Also not sure how that happened to begin with.

But only on SEMod, not SEChatMod?

Yeah, SEChatMod is fine. You wanna give me the new version of the file on dropbox or something so I can take a peek at it?
I feel like that was blatantly obvious. Bonus points to Jeff, I guess.
Apparently I missed that in the TortoiseHg commit diff window.

11:23 PM
Bonus points to Jeff?

He was griping about how poor the UI was on Hg GUIs
Seeing as how I didn't realize that happened, I guess that's credit towards that statement. :P

Ah, right. I recall said discussion. (:

(the commit diff is shoved down in the right corner, so it is easy to ignore if you think you know what's going on, but since I can be wrong, that's a bit of an issue, heh)
Yeah. :)

VS is auto-formatting, but the indentation is wrong. I'll have to fiddle, but I can't now. |:

I'll wait patiently for my super cool desktop notifications then :P
