This is a list of English words of Yiddish origin, many of which have entered the English language by way of American English. Spelling of some of these Yiddish language words may be variable (for example, schlep is also seen as shlep, schnoz as shnozz, and so on). Many of these words are more common in the entertainment industry, via vaudeville, the Catskills/Borscht Belt, and Hollywood. Others are more regionally oriented, e.g. in the New York City metropolitan area. Background Yiddish is a Germanic language originally spoken by the Jews of Central and later Eastern Europe, written in t...

Or is that too harsh?

> The password you entered doesn't meet the minimum criteria for a safe password. Use between 8 and 16 characters with at least 1 lower-case letter, 1 upper-case letter and 1 number or special character (no spaces, case sensitive).

If you're having problems with the picture on Comcast it could be some of my terrible configuration software.
True story.

Password I provided: televis_2A
Tell me how that does not meet the criteria?

Maybe a _ isn't special enough.

1 number OR special character, should work either way

12:52 AM
OR, you used both!!

"at least" :p

Bwahaa

So 17 char long passwords aren't safe?

No, they're db column isn't big enough. (;

The answer is: no. The only 17 chars long password is 1234567890qwerty!

I would run it myself, but apparently OpenSTV started costing money two weeks ago
I'm not entirely convinced you can call it "open source" if you charge people for the source code

@waiwai933 That's...confusing. Thanks

@MichaelMrozek I wasn't charged for a credit card when I ran aptitude install openstv

Here's Comcast's answer: Underscore is not an allowed special character. Only 7 characters are allowed special characters.

1:06 AM
@radp I tried to get it from their website, which is apparently unwise

@DanGrossman Hahah, but of course, they allowed you to type in that password to begin with right?

Yes. It said it was a "good" password. Until I submit it.

Oh, my Python version isn't nearly high enough for this. Well, I'll trust that @radp isn't lying about the results
@DanGrossman Er. How did they not fix your issue?

My issue is that their website does not accept passwords that conform to their criteria.
4
It has not been resolved.
Revealing the secret, unpublished rules is not a resolution.

@MichaelMrozek All I had to do is install the software, tell it to use the dump and the Meek SVT system and accept the already preconfigured settings
Quite impressive

1:10 AM
I just got a phone call from Comcast. I declined.
I guess that's what happens when you say the issue is not resolved.

Now .. nite.

@DanGrossman Nonsense, your issue was that your password wasn't being accepted and you didn't know why
You can't expect their online support technicians to rewrite their password system on the spot for you

No, I can't, but by NOT accepting that as a resolution, there's a chance it'll bubble up to someone that can fix it
By accepting it, I would allow the problem to continue for others

@DanGrossman Well, not at Comcast, but :P

That's not what that form is for...

1:12 AM
Now it's in a pile of chat transcripts for unresolved issues, that someone might review

To make sure their customer service people aren't failing, not to look for new technical issues to take on

Nite.

@radp G'night

Michael, in a company that makes any sense, it'd be both
You don't collect then throw away good information
Especially a company with the lowest customer support rating in the country... they should have a whole department dedicated to reviewing the incidents that were rated poorly to figure out why

I'm pretty sure they don't comb through the customer service feedback requests looking for technical issues people are having. If that form does exist, it's entirely separate; no part of the customer service had anything to do with you not liking their password form
This is like filling out a restaurant feedback form saying you were unhappy with your meal because you feel the restaurant is in a poor location

1:14 AM
@drachenstern You mean did I just post a ton of links, yes

No, it's like filling out a restaurant feedback form saying I am unhappy with my meal because your front door wouldn't open until I knocked for 20 minutes.
It may not help the chef, but whoever reads that form will almost definitely pass it on to the manager/owner.

@drachenstern Althought I'm not sure why they are all multiple tweets..

@TylerChacha idk either, that's why I alerted you to the fact with a graphical representation of what I saw so you could see it as well

4
Is there even a reason for non-mods to go through this filtered list? I think it's 100% answers that should be deleted, which we can't do anyway

@Michael ... we need better mechanics of dealing with this ... see: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/72307/…
maybe the flagging system needs to be extended or something
eg: flag to delete ... or something like that

I know it's moatly copy/pasted but YEESH, verbose.

A: Mod Rewrite Question.

ScooblerBasically anything that looks for sitemap.xml will be passed to sitemap.php but without it showing to the user, that is, the url doesn't change for the user. Here is some of the documentation: Taken from the Apache mod_rewrite Flags: RewriteRule pattern target [Flag1,Flag2,Flag3] L|last The [...

I never really thought about the whole "users don't know why their post was deleted" thing

I can operate a clipboard, honest.

I still think mods should have the ability to push notifications to users, but you don't want to use those every time somebody's answer gets deleted

1:56 AM
@mootinator Damn, I should have answered that :P

Hooray for the /review page. Now I can spend hours flagging things!
@mootinator I almost always write verbose answers. I prefer to be thorough, and the askers seem to appreciate it.
That said, that question is almost a duplicate of another question I answered this morning. That one was asking how to rewrite sitemap.php to sitemap.xml whereas this one is asking for an explanation on how that rewrite actually works.

Heh.

Why would someone want to rewrite sitemap.php to sitemap.xml?

@DanGrossman No idea. At least this one is asking to rewrite xml to php, which makes sense.
Here is the question I'm referring to.

That makes no sense.
But at least 90% of mod_rewrite questions I saw on the SitePoint forums had the direction backwards

2:06 AM
which? php->xml, or xml->php

so he probably actually wants the URI sitemap.xml to serve sitemap.php

Yeah. That makes sense
I feel like an idiot now for having not noticed that this morning.
As an aside, that answer is the only time I've really felt like I was rep-whoring.
this is why.

Hi

2:16 AM
I'm ok
Working on an Adobe Flex application
in Flash Builder 4.
You?

Cool. I have a Flex book SitePoint sent me for free that I've never read. I'm cold.

SitePoint?
What's that?
and what format is the Flex book?

I'm getting started with Flex - my first app.

The 798th highest traffic site on the web; web development and design community; 3 million member forum; book publisher

2:18 AM
How do you get a free book?

They have giveaways and contests on the site all the time. And I get a copy of every book they publish for being a moderator on their forum.

@DanGrossman I'm also cold. Hi five!

it was some oreilly book, I don't remember the title

Cool. I could really use a Flex book now.
I got an iOS game development book for free for writing to author and asking for it.
If flex works as advertised, I'll have a cross-platform app that works. IF

Adobe's a regular sponsor on SitePoint so they end up giving away Adobe-related stuff every once in a while

2:20 AM
Ok, I'll look into it. I was in Borders today, almost bought an Adobe Press book on Flex.
I decided against it though. The price was not human-friendly.
Computer books are expensive.

I was in Borders today too, using that 50% off coupon that expires today :)

Ugh! I missed that.

One of my websites made it into a book so I bought a copy

You should have mentioned that before Borders closed for the day ;)

@DanGrossman Which website, which book?
@TimStone - are there no 24 hours Borders?

2:22 AM
the BORDERS here close at 10PM except sundays

@DanGrossman Looks like a coffee table book

@Moshe I wouldn't imagine so, but mine closes at either 9 or 10PM regardless.

Yeah, something like that

@DanGrossman - (Excuse me for saying this but...) OMG!
I was holding that book today.

i get 1/4 of a page for a screenshot, and another page has a blurb about the site... "link-tracker on steroids" etc

2:23 AM
What is the site?

my second book appearance I'm aware of =p
Another site of mine appears a couple times in one of SitePoint's books

@DanGrossman What about the online store?

Cool

@JesseHartwick the coupon is not valid on the website

@DanGrossman Shitty

2:26 AM
The only time I buy a book in store is when they have those coupons, which is pretty regularly actually
with the 40% or 50% discount they're cheaper than Amazon... without they're not

I hate that.
In Canada, we have a bookstore called Chapters.
Online their prices are comparable (but still slightly higher) than Amazon.
But in-store, you pay sticker. It's ridiculous.

costs a lot more to run a huge store that only serves a small region than a warehouse that serves half a country

Ugh
I hate giving non authoritative answers.

I guess, but there are no books I'd be willing to pay 20% more for to have it that day
And so, I end up shopping at Amazon, since it's cheaper overall, and I've found that Amazon ships faster.
I bought books online at Chapters exactly once.

I too shop at amazon.

2:29 AM
I signed up with me+chapters@gmail.com

All these periods... you all sound so angry

which worked fine, until I tried to log in again after completing my order
they're perfectly happy to accept +chapters when you sign up, but it breaks their login.
I contacted their support, and they said my only recourse was to create a new account.

@JesseHartwick Lame.

At least Amazon tends to have their shit together technically.

There is only one company I spend more money with than Amazon.
My Amazon bill is almost $10,000 a year

2:32 AM
@DanGrossman fleshlight?

Secret. But not fleshlight. :p

I suppose RealDolls would've made more sense.... day late, dollar short

Yeh, two of those would put me over Amazon ;)

They have those on Amazon?
40% off?
checks
;P

CyberSkin is the brand-name of a soft elastomer material that is intended to emulate the feel of human skin. It is made by the adult toy manufacturer Topco Sales. The company states that the technology behind CyberSkin is a "new Aerospace 601 computerized injection molding machine, originally designed by NASA engineers..." Similar materials are available under other brand names, such as Ultraskin, Eroskin, Softskin, SoftTouch, Cyber Jel-lee, New supersoft, Futurotic and UR3 (Ultra realistic 3.0). All are soft and stretchy, with a velvety texture that is caused by talcs and cornstarches u...

The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear took place on October 30, 2010 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., led by Jon Stewart and an in-character Stephen Colbert. The rally drew about 215,000 people, according to aerial photography analysis by AirPhotosLive.com for CBS News. The rally was a combination of what initially were announced as separate events: Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity and Colbert's satirical counterpart, the March to Keep Fear Alive. Its stated purpose was to provide a venue for attendees to be heard above what Stewart describes as the more vocal and extreme 15–2...
