12:00 AM
I'm going to ask our whole team to install this, LOL
Hey there @ChrisF! Thanks for the gaming help recently :-D

I'm a bit late to this party because I passed out apparently, but yeah, controlling user edit behaviour is...difficult, heh. What kind of changes did they make? :P

@Tim You talkin to me?!?
(punk!)

I think so, unless I totally misinterpreted the above conversation

Client pasted in a gigantic table from Excel into our CMS module
Which rendered it as 35,000 lines of HTMl code and it looked like total poop on the live site

Oh boy...heh

12:03 AM
On the plus side, our CMS module can handle 35,000 lines of HTML!
(kinda)

Hahah

That was just the most blatant issue. There were many others :-)

I can only imagine, heh. I'm happy that no one mucks around with the configuration files very much for this project, since that's about the only place where user input could get messy for us.

@Tim we don't let users modify the config files :-)

@GeorgeMarian oh $DEITY if you need something like that to use the editor someone's doing something wrong ....

12:07 AM
I take that back. one user we allow to modify their config file :-)

Heheh. Our configuration files are...probably a little different than your configuration files due to the nature of the software.

@drachenstern LOL You don't need it once you've learned the keybinds. If it were that bad, there wouldn't be vi emulators for all sorts of things.

Also we just made a change where, when we do give users access to CSS files, they get their own CSS files (instead of sharing one with our team) and, it's earlier in the chain than ours, so our rules override theirs :-)

sorry I had to :p

@TheUnhandledException Ah, very nice

12:08 AM
@Tim I'm sure they're different -- our config files are PHP files :-D

Ah right, I remember you talking about this before, hahah.

@drachenstern :P

disappears a few minutes for food

@GeorgeMarian :D

Enjoy your hot pocket @Tim

12:10 AM
heh

ok people, I'm back to writing code, bbl

Actually, a hot pocket sounds good right about now. Talk about lazy.
@drachenstern Have fun storming the castle.

I just saw the new dialog where you can confirm whether "you think this post is offensive", but it's missing a third button: Hell no

um
Oh! It's Pekka!
LOL

@TheUnhandledException Yeah, I changed the name for the joyous occasion
<kbd>Does it work in chat, too?</kbd>

12:16 AM
How are you Pekka? I saw "Rejoice rejoice kbd is back" in my XMPP client and I thought my code had a bug, hahaha
Did it?
No. Rats

No it doesn't. Too bad! `status-feature-request`
I'm fine, thanks! Only that I should be doing some bookkeeping before I go to bed instead of being on Chat.Meta....
What, the status- thingy is gone too? 'status-testing'

status-must-be-the-whole-message

status-aaah-I-see

status-must-have-brackets
:-)

status-lol

12:19 AM
I thought [status-must-use-brackets] worked inline too, no?

status-now-I-got-it

I haven't been answering PHP questions much lately because I'm in here all the time, so I haven't seen you much. But for a while there almost every PHP question I went to answer either you just did or you were right behind me :-)
Plus I've been busy with XMPP. And that work stuff ;-)
@drachenstern no, must be the only message
Did SO chat ever get an easter egg?

@TheUnhandledException besides the bird?
@TheUnhandledException I see this ;)

The bird? LOL

@TheUnhandledException Yeah! :) It is a nice distraction... Although it keeps one from working occasionally, true.
All right, I'll be off, back to my paperwork. Later everybody!

12:22 AM
Later Pekka, er, @Rejoice!
@drachenstern do explain the bird comment?

<[^>]>
I consider that to look like a bird

hooookay... :-)
but nothing like SU's "How [can|do] I .*" or ServerFault's "rm -rf /"?

What do you think it looks like?

Or Gaming's "insert coin"

did you try it? ~ Since you asked if there was one
@TheUnhandledException where do I plug that rm one? I gotta see this

12:25 AM
No! I thought you were playing around! Ok. Sec

@drachenstern chat.serverfault.com

@TheUnhandledException Ha, you too?

Me to what now? Now answering questions? :-)

@JoshsSocks I did, ha that was cute

Oh. I get it now. That's great. THAT IS SO GREAT

12:28 AM
@TheUnhandledException Running into Pekka answering PHP questions.

Oh. yeah that used to happen to me ALL THE TIME, LOL

Yup. It was uncanny.

What's funny @drachenstern is when you asked what I thought it looked like I was going to say a regex, but didn't because I thought it would be a lame joke ROFLMAO

@TheUnhandledException lmao
Is that (one of) the Regex for badly formed HTML tags?

returns

12:40 AM
Welcome back

Thanks!
Now I'm looking for the motivation to finish this cleanup, heh. It seems to have gone missing though.

@TimStone Isn't that usually the way it goes w/ cleanup?

It seems so. It's weird though, I'm excited about getting it done, but I end up staring blankly at the code...then start playing Minecraft.

@TimStone I have that same problem with chat :p

12:52 AM
Hahah, yeah there's always that too ;)

ok sneaky question on twitter
if I'm using #NewTwitter and I goto @WilW's page, and then click on the second one down ...
how do I send someone to EXACTLY that view?

@TheUnhandledException just a reminder, there is xkcd for everything :P

Now that's good CRM for yah...

Yeah, hah

I'm assuming Cataclysm isn't discounted.

You'd be right. :P

I'll eat my shoes if this works
Amazing!

1:16 AM
@YiJiang mmm...boiled leather...tasty

THe chat actually works on IE6 or 7
Althought just visiting this page triggered four unresponsive script warnings

But persistance pays off! So here I am
@GeorgeMarian Replying also works!

That it does.
@YiJiang But does the it work the other way around?

Now would anyone like to post a onebox to see if it crashes this browser?
@GeorgeMarian It does, yes. Although the reply icon is squarish due to the lack of border-radius support

1:22 AM
@YiJiang so you're safely in China then?

Jumping the shark is an idiom used to denote the point in a television program's history where the plot spins off into absurd storylines or unlikely characterizations. These changes were often the result of efforts to revive interest in a show whose audience had begun to decline. History The phrase jump the shark refers to the climactic scene in "Hollywood", the third part (written by Fred Fox, Jr.) of a three-part episode opening the fifth season of the American TV series Happy Days in September 1977. In this story, the central characters visit Los Angeles, where Fonzie (Henry Winkl...

Here's you a onebox that should be neutral enough :p
Tencent QQ, generally referred to as QQ, is the most popular free instant messaging computer program in Mainland China, and according to its statistics, the number of simultaneous online QQ accounts exceeds 100 million. In October 2010, QQ.com ranked 9th overall in Alexa's internet rankings just after Twitter ranked 10th. The program is maintained by Tencent Holdings Limited (), owned in part by Naspers. Since its entrance into Chinese households QQ quickly emerged as a modern cultural phenomenon, now being portrayed in popular culture. Aside from the chat program, QQ has also developed...

Ah, QQ

And a youtube one:

So did IE6 die on you @YiJiang?

Q: Is there a tool for delicious (aka del.icio.us)?

George MarianI'm looking for a tool that would allow me to interface with my delicious bookmarks from within Ubuntu. I know of the Firefox plugin, but I don't want something in the browser. I'd also prefer that it have a GUI. (Though having a CLI in addition would be nice.) All I've found in the repos are...

Ok I'll check in on my iPhone and see if he made it, otherwise I'm out of the office and off to the house. Half day tomorrow and we'll be out of here!

@GeorgeMarian Wow, hahah.

The question is pretty clear, right? I want a desktop app that would let me manage my delicious bookmarks...WTF?
I even wrote delicious both ways! :D

Apparently it's too much for some people :P

2:05 AM
@Sathya sorry I was eating dinner, you still here?
Oh well next time :-)

LOL. My oy comment on the meme has enough upvotes to add to my pundit progress.

@rchern and that post got me the Necromancer badge

hahaha

shakes head

This just dawned on me: lamp, windows, lightbox (switch?) ... What other computing terms are references to light?

2:19 AM
...Uhm, heh.

Yeah yeah, I'm as weird as y'all are ;)

Hey what's a good example of an on screen manual?

Describe please

We're creating docs for our software and want to review how some manuals are laid out
Like Windows Help

I wish redgate sold their version
I mean not redgate but the ones that do resharper
So would HTML/wiki be ok, CHM only or something else?

2:35 AM
It's in a custom CMS
Unless anyone has good ideas for open source HTML manual software?

3:25 AM
@TheUnhandledException yeah I was having dinner now, done now :) :p

It's OK, you're allowed :-)

Q: How can programming affect human being?

GomaDo you think programming is a sort of addiction? Are you becoming overweight? Do you ware glasses? Do you spend most of the time alone? Have you ever screamed at anyone because of their interruption while you were coding?

Is this guy trying to be offensive? lol.

> Do you ware glasses

I guess, but since my answer to all of those is no he's not doing a very good job..
Though I suspect that technically I'm alone a lot, but since I hate that feeling I preoccupy myself with the company of chat ;)

Likewise @Tim! :-)

3:37 AM
Heheh

I need to get out and network more... but that involves free time, heh
This recession has sucked all my time away damnit!

I....don't know where to go, heh.

Well there's that too :-)
Actually there's a number of local groups I'd love to join, but I have so little time. I also want to volunteer more
I used to teach, that's so rewarding
But one could argue StackOverflow has replaced that :-D

Oh wow, nice.

@TheUnhandledException that's true

3:41 AM
I taught C++ to my peers when I was a senior in high school. That was fun :-)
A handful of them took the AP college exam afterwards. Only one passed. That sucked :-(

Presumably that was before they switched the exam language to Java? :P

Hahah, just making sure ;)

I thought I had a copy of that on my personal site but I guess I no longer do...

Wow, very nice :D

3:45 AM
Thanks :-)

have a star, good Sir Gitlin. that's awesome

Found it.
I knew I had the whole thing, dorky ass picture of me and all!
Why thank you @Sathya
OK. Time for a bit of relaxation and then bed for me. Catch you guys later!

See ya!

I'll leave you with this dorky quote from one of my students who, I kid you not, went on to become a porn model: "I think he's a really smart guy in computers and everyone knows that. If some kid tried to teach English, which takes a lot of studying and education, that wouldn't work."
ROFLMAO those were the days...

Hahahah

3:54 AM
> An honors student with straight A's in all his computer courses, Gitlin, 17, is fluent in the tongue of the young and plugged-in, discussing syntax and error, string and output, double-click, launch, slash, int, and executable file with the ease of a pro
@TheUnhandledException ROFLMAO

Then I discussed syntax and error. Now I AM THE ERROR!!!!
Ok. Night guys ;-)

@TheUnhandledException 'nite Josh

The guy I edited earlier has posted to MSO about his question.

Yeah, I saw, heh. :P
A question which itself had to be edited.

Why do I even come back at night?

4:02 AM
To enjoy our continuing company, I suspect. In regard to MSO....not as sure.

@TimStone Hm... I see your point. Goodbye.

Hah

(Not actually leaving. Trying to figure out the difference between different ThinkPad lines.)

@PopularDemand My boss bought a ThinkPad and has a lot of issues running VMs for some unknown reason. A former teacher of mine had a ThinkPad for over five years (in 2003) and absolutely loved it. I've never owned one myself, heh. What lines are you looking at?

@TimStone I'm using an SL400 right now and it's the best computer I've ever owned. I'm thinking about an Edge or a T410s.
It's going to be for my girlfriend for school, so VMs and other technical things aren't going to be an issue.

4:10 AM
Ah, gotcha.

I'm a little worried that a 64-bit OS won't be able to run some of the more obscure programs she might need to use for school, but she's not too concerned about that.

Do you know what programs she needs to run?
(I imagine it should be fine either way)

The ones I'm thinking of aren't mainstream apps. She's got one for viewing slides of cells, for example. I think it came with a textbook.
I am curious why compilers and VMs and such require so much in the way of resources, though. Never got to take a compilers course or a serious systems course as an undergrad. Hopefully I can rectify that in grad school.

@PopularDemand I've heard good things about T410s

@PopularDemand Oh, I suppose that is obscure, heh.

4:17 AM
@PopularDemand may need WindowsXP mode :o ... my sis-n-law is a RN student, and has to have WindowsXP mode for her textbooks

@drachenstern They're working okay on 32-bit 7 now.

@PopularDemand You should. it's a good thing to study ;)
@PopularDemand Oh good. The issue here was Jet4

Nice. First Google result for "i5-460 i5-560": Super User.

yeah the SOIS sites are starting to show up pretty heavily
also, did you see Joel's post earlier? (I think it was on twitter)

@drachenstern I don't use twitter.

4:21 AM
the trilogy is on the list of the top 400 destinations according to some metric site

@drachenstern It's where I'd vacation

@drachenstern Nice.

Out of all the internet, the trilogy is in the top 400
that's pretty impressive

@drachenstern Yeah, no kidding
I wish I knew what I was doing to that extent :P

> "A SQL query walks into a bar. He approaches two tables and says, Mind if I join you?"
I keep having issues connecting to chat, anyone else?

4:28 AM
It was probably trying to protect itself from that joke ;) Hahah, nah. But no, everything seems fine on my end.

no I keep getting told to refresh the page

I wonder what metric they were using to rank with.

@drachenstern The overlay bar at the top?

@TimStone yarr
tharrs the link to that article I was talking about
can you stay mad at this?
how do I know how far I am from that badge?
or sportsmanship?

I think there are some queries for that one.

4:37 AM
ok how do I query the queries? :p

But not for sportsmanship, since it requires data not present in the data dump.
Oh wait, I suspect electorate is a no go either
Sorry, I was confusing it with something else.
But per your question: To the data explorer!

Vote info is not public.

Yeah, what she said. :P

(:
Note that the data dump does contain a Votes table, but the user id is only populated if the vote type is favorite.

yeah, I couldn't build the queries myself earlier, I was experimenting :p
garrrr stupid chat timeouts on posts
also, odata is fun to goof off with :p
with about 8 more zero score answers I could get two more badges :p

4:48 AM
reads between the lines and goes to upvote @drachenstern's 0-vote answers (;
(kidding!) q:

lmao

Feel free to vote mine up, I'm already an Unsung Hero ;)

That wouldn't be as much fun.

@rchern It would for me, so that makes it OK.
Or so I'm told.

Q: user name problem on stackoverflow

Muhammad Adeel ZahidHello all, i have been experiencing different kind of problems on stackoveflow and i had posted a question on meta here. but experts could not reproduce the problem neither could i. Today, when i opened stackoverflow it was showing me Tassadaque's profile instead of mine (me and Tassadaque are o...

I'm confused.

4:51 AM
@rchern What about?

that's an odd bug

Oh wait, I see.
Yeah, I'm also confused.

what will they do when skeet hits 1m rep?

@TimStone Isn't that...what it is supposed to look like?

He seems to think that he shouldn't be seeing his name in the top bar because he's on another user's page...?
@rchern Yeah, it is, heh. There's nothing wrong there.
@drachenstern I suspect they'll have genetically engineered and raised a real unicorn by then, which they'll subsequently present to him.

4:56 AM
It dawns on me:

@rchern WTF?

"When I opened my browser I got his user profile page" ... I'm thinking that's the answer
5
Q: Can we clean up the footer?

waiwai933The footer for graduated sites is a mess! Meta and Area 51 are stuck in the middle of the list of graduated sites, since it lists sites in order of creation. Updated proposal with better category names: This way, sites are logically arranged instead of in chronological order (after all, chronol...

is this guy begging the question?

@rchern I commented just in case something was awry prior to that screenshot, but I doubt it.

Oh, I answered.

@drachenstern I'm not sure what you mean.
Oh. :P
Oh wow, is it really midnight?
Oh Minecraft....whoops.

5:01 AM
No. 11pm.
(;

Sorry, I should have clarified.
Is it really midnight in the best timezone?

No. 11pm.

To which the answer is "Yes".

(;

All I know is it's time for me to goto bed, not enough sleep last night

5:02 AM
@drachenstern g'night

night

If I were reasonable I'd do the same, but...

@rchern I couldn't help chiming in, as well. :)

G'night, heh
It's possible that somehow that guy pulled a Yi Jiang, but there's no evidence of that from the screenshot, heh.

@GeorgeMarian hehehe
Well, there's 2 actions he describes
> when i opened stackoverflow it was showing me Tassadaque's profile instead of mine
> when i clicked on his name to go to his profile, stack showed me following page

5:04 AM
@rchern This is expected.

The action of clicking on someone's name matches what he sees.
It is the first action that could be wrong, but we can't see that.

Yeah, I'm considering the possibly that the other user's name appeared in the top bar, then when he clicked the link he got that guy's profile, but then was logged in as himself.
Since that would be consistent with what I'll now call the Singapore: Unsupported Syndrome.

@rchern This first one doesn't exactly make sense. Did have it saved in the session somehow? (Chrome maybe?)

@TimStone Except, location Pakistan
q:

5:06 AM
oy?

@rchern Yeah, but I have to call it something, and Yi Jiang had first dibs. :P

@TimStone Fair 'nuff

OK, so I definitely should be doing work. And then Stack Scripts. And then I told @TheUnhandledException I'd look at XMPP.
I also need to figure out what I did in October...
Because there's a large hole in my timesheets, and I'm not really sure what goes there.

(;

5:09 AM
Hahahah, that's what I'm afraid of!

@GeorgeMarian you don't think that is oy worthy?

But that would be a huge amount of time <del>wasted</del> repurposed for insightful discussion, heh.

@rchern Oh...it's a web app and he never tried it in Chrome?

He didn't bother to see if it worked. Or bother to check. He just assumed it didn't and asked for an alternative.

That's beyond oy...that's a /doublefacepalm.

5:12 AM
Meh.

@rchern Ah nice, turns out that not-fading background comment highlight bug is actually kind of significant, since I can't even read that comment, heh.
Oh, wow >_>

Excellent :D

hehehe

@GeorgeMarian Whoa, that’s a full facepalm all the way. Double facepalm, oh my god. It’s a double facepalm, all the way. Whoa that’s so intense. Whoa man! Wow! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa ho ho oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! Woo! Oh wow! Woo! Yeah! Oh ho ho! Oh my god! Oh my god look at that! It’s starting even to look like a triple facepalm! Oh my god it’s full on! Oh my god. Oh my god, what does it mean? Oh my god it’s so intense. Oh. Oh. Oh my god.

5:18 AM
@TimStone I just realized I never started, and definitely haven't finished the SEModifications keyboard navigation.

Hahah :P
@rchern We can just pretend the last week or so didn't exist as far as SE-script development was concerned. ;)

\o/

Dang responsibilities and such

needs to get her priorities straight!

@rchern Really! These are absolutely free scripts for a <del>defacing</del> vastly improving a top 400 website, what were you thinking? ;)

5:23 AM
@mootinator moodynator, huh?

@TimStone lol

5:51 AM
...
Kuwait has banned DSLRs in public places?

6:19 AM
@TimStone That's a good way to begin the day
Somewhere under the rainbow

Heheh :P
@rchern, @GeorgeMarian: Ah, I was right ;)

Hrmph!

Has to happen every once in a while, right? :p

Hehe

6:36 AM
OK, something is definitely leaking, argh.
1.2 GB of RAM consumed, what the hell Firefox.
Tried to commit to a proposal on Area 51 and the comment counter froze the browser.

Why is RAM still so expensive to build?
Compared to the way hard drive prices have gone in the past two decades, you'd expect us to have 500GB RAM for $100 by now

You can now expand revisions on a #stackoverflow user's activity tab - http://stackoverflow.com/users/22656?tab=activity
I like!

nice
But why am I not surprised the link goes to Jon Skeet's user page. :p

@DanGrossman I'm guessing there's some reason related to issues of latency and the capabilities provided by the the interface, but I really have no idea, heh. I did see something the other day about some company that designed a SSD module you could shove in the slot though (for some reason). It still connected via SATA cables of course, not like you get insane transfer speeds or anything.
@rchern Yeah, I was happy to see that the other day too.
Really annoying when 60% of the mod_rewrite questions have virtually the same title and I don't remember which one was which, heh.
Hooray, my first Area 51 commitment.
feels accomplished

7:44 AM
Random question; any of you folks have IE7 to hand?

@MarcGravell I don't have it immediately handy, but if you needed something checked "in the near future", I could make that happen. :P

just, we have our über-ghetto IE7 login hack... er, I mean fix, for chat.SE ready for end-user abuse. I mean, use.
2

Heheh

Well, strictly speaking it is for "browsers that don't support local-storage", but I think we all know which browser we're tutting at here...

Don't be silly, IE has always had local storage. You just had to find an exploit that gave you access to the file system. ;)
12
pings @YiJiang too
I think he has to use IE7 at the moment, so he'd make a good test subject too, heh.

7:58 AM
cool; victims ahoy! I can test in chrome with --disable-local-storage, but that isn't necessarily quite the same experience.

Yeah, that sounds too pain-free to be the real thing. Very cool that you were able to come up with a solution for these...less fortunate browsers, heh. :D

Welcome back to Europe

Hmm, how did I end up playing Minecraft again?

nice to be back. The US wasn't too bad though. I didn't get shot or stabbed, which was a bonus.

This is becoming really...problematic.
@MarcGravell This is a plus, apparently murder is back up in NYC this year.
I believe this is the first time that I've been here to witness Pekka staying in the chat more than half a second. Very suspicious. ;)

8:18 AM
@TimStone When I come and go quickly, I'm usually in the middle of something and want to do a quick check what 's going on :)

Ah ha, makes sense.

There should be a "read transcript" function so you can peek into the room before entering it

I suppose you can click the info link at the bottom of the room box on the main page and then go to the transcript, but it's not a very direct route.

@TimStone yeah but good idea nevertheless!
@Marc where in the UK do you live?

@Marc, so you got to see Rovio from the other end?
He dun gorn...

8:31 AM
Hmm. I really need to comment these super long code blocks better. That, or my memory needs to stop failing me.

Comments are for wimps
I use them all the time :)

Hahah. Well, this method is 300 lines of very conditional code, and I just want to remember on a high level which path is taken in certain circumstances.
