12:00 AM
Later @Wes!
ARGH NetBeans has totally locked up on me
/me needs a new system
Damn I can't even force it to quit, gotta reboot. SUCKS!

12:16 AM
):

Yes, Netbeans sucks. ;)

Errrrgh
Client: "I ran a whole bunch of read only operations on the database and your concurrency fix didn't change the performance."

@mootinator ROFL
Concurrent reads? It's a perfectly cromulent idea...

CLients. Can't live with 'em, can't eat without 'em :-p

12:49 AM
@TheUnhandledException Hahah :P

1:09 AM
Just discovered CS:Source ... may not be around so much lol :P

Just? :P

lol Q3A guy

1:34 AM
@TheUnhandledException Badge acquired. ty.

Badge? Badge? I want a badge!

@drachenstern Speaking of which, where's our badge?
30 days, 30 consecutive It's been a whole hour!!! Worry!!!

I know!!!
Time to go play twister with some 8 year olds. Wish me luck

@mootinator Uh oh, that's not a good sign...

Good luck!

1:44 AM
(I'm really just kidding, make sure you've viewed an actual page "today" and give it 17 more minutes :P)

Day 3 of trying to pick a domain name.

@DanGrossman What are you trying to pick a domain name for, by the way?

The LOLCat Bible Translation Project is a wiki-based website set up in July 2007 by Martin Grondin, where editors aim to parody the entire Bible in "LOLspeak", the slang popularized by the LOLcat Internet phenomenon. The project relies on contributors to adapt passages. As of March 27, 2008, approximately 61% of the text had been adapted, and Grondin had stated that he hopes the entire New Testament will be complete by the end of 2008. In the process of adaptation, various changes are being made to the source material, for example, changing the main characters to cats, Jesus Christ as "Ha...

Something somewhat similar to Google Analytics, I guess

Ah

1:46 AM
Closer to Mixpanel, KISSMetrics or Performable, really

@DanGrossman Have you seen haveamint.com

Yes, it's ancient, why?

I'd try to provide some suggestions for you, but I'm having a bit of trouble thinking up a domain name myself, heh.

I already run w3counter.com for generic web stats

@DanGrossman Just saying that you won't necessarily to explicitly reference matrices or analytics in your brand

1:49 AM
I'm not creative enough to make up a made-up name :/

@DanGrossman I actually resent sites that use W3 in their branding when they're not related to the W3C, although that bias actually stems from W3Schools

World Wide Web. It's not something W3C came up with.

@DanGrossman I know I know, but the association is there, and the W3School makes it worse

Oh well. W3Counter is about 8 years old, and I've never had someone complain that they were confused and only signed up because they thought it had something to do with w3c.org

Well that didn't last long

1:54 AM
Right hand trip dang.

@DanGrossman No, I doubt that would happen. But I have seen W3CSchool typed out more than once before
Incredibly annoying

Do you dislike w3schools for some reason other than the name?
It seems like a generally nice site... a huge volume of free web programming tutorials

I am not a DBA. Why does this company which already has a real DBA keep asking me how to tune their database? frustrating

@DanGrossman Content, markup, bad bad practises
They actually use stuff they themselves discourage others to use
Some of their tutorials are hopelessly out of date

I see

1:57 AM
And a couple are just plain wrong, as seen from some of the questions that appear on SO

@mootinator Maybe they have a "real" DBA?

hah
impossibility.org is fun but not that helpful so far

Heh.

@DanGrossman I just did a search. Funny, but I think it's just an advertising tool for a domain registration / hosting company :P

:very confused:

2:00 AM
@DanGrossman All of the results come back from a single registar!

They don't come from any registrar, this is a list of domains nobody owns

@mootinator I haz a nuu badj

@drachenstern So do I. A gold one, even. Heh...

It's generating names from a dictionary combined with what you type, doing a DNS check on each name, and if they don't resolve doing a WHOIS to see if they're unregistered. The names nobody owns are given back to you, with a link to Namecheap if you want to buy it there, not that you have to.

@DanGrossman So it doesn't check for squatters? For shame. Goes off to add some adjective to StackOverflow.com

2:03 AM
A goald onez??? I wantz a goald wonz!!! (having fun with phonetic pronunciation)

It's to generate possible names for you to register, not see what's already registered

safestackoverflow.com is available! Well well... isn't that an oxymoron

RapStackOverflow.com

Stackoverflowbuzzer.com ... Need a onebox for that one ;)
Chatting on the iPhone ... Chatting on the iPhone ... Works pretty well

Was that speech-to-text?
Still waiting for the year computers can do that so well that real voice interfaces become usable... I remember being excited about speech-to-text software that came with a new Acer computer... Pentium 90MHz with Windows 95

2:13 AM
Noop
Have you used dragon lately? It does a good job

It'll be there when I can be in the kitchen, and say "Computer, play me some classical" and a computer in the living room picks it up, starts my default media player, and starts playing my music collection by genre

You want a single central? I want an autonomous-ish mesh-ish home network. That knows which room I am in and is separate from the rest of the people in the house. So I can listen to what I want and the others what they want.

Computers are sentient at that point, so they've recognized programmers as their revered Creators; we control all the computers regardless of who else is in the house and what they want

Is this like a later build of the chat room software than runs on chat.so?

2:20 AM
Why?

@DanGrossman Don't think so, the only difference should be the easter eggs

Different sounds, styles, etc
I guess it's just like a "theme"

@DanGrossman Style and sound is different for every site I think

Yeah, the chat core is the same for each of them, then a different stylesheet / path to notification sound is specified by the site.

@drachenstern Yarr, silver.

@TimStone That's just brilliant. Best reason I know of to wear a kilt. Unless, of course, you happen to be Scottish.

@GeorgeMarian Hahah, yeah. As for the linked comment, it does kind of concern me that people won over by those kinds of advertisements are in charge of security, but yeah. :P

@TimStone $15 per hours? That works out to... wow, that sucks

@YiJiang Admittedly I think you can do worse here, but even then..

@Fosco nice. That's one of the harder bronze badges to get :-)

3:03 AM
@TimStone Absolutely. I'm not as concerned about the pay range, but the fact that they're advertising at gas stations is ridiculous!

I was sold by the x-ray vision.

@drachenstern LOL, short and sweet... or maybe "short and bitter" is a better way to describe Jeff's answer :-)
Note to self: Don't tell clients to download an Ubuntu Live CD
> Well, my husband has assured me that what you wrote in the last e-mail was indeed English! :) Fortunately, it makes a whole lot of sense to him so he's going to try and help me with the Ubuntu and Font Forge stuff this weekend

@TheUnhandledException Hm?
Ah. :P

@TheUnhandledException Hehe... but isn't that how 99% of the people get Ubuntu?
Oh dear, font forge

3:11 AM
My thinking exactly @YiJiang!
She's say, "Oh wow, this is so much better than windows!"
@Tim you working late too, or just spending free time with your drinking buddies? ;-)

Huh? Bring me up to speed, @TheUnhandledException.
Oh yah, I have scotch and I can't leave my apt!

Up to speed?
On which part @GeorgeMarian? I didn't think I said anything that fast ;-)

Regarding the client, ubuntu and font forge.
heh
I figured that was a continuation of something.

Oh, client asked what types of fonts our software supported, I said "TrueType" she said she had some other kind, and I said there's programs to convert them, including the free program, FontForge
She said she was told not to install it because it required Linux and I suggested a Linux LiveCD

Ah, couldn't leave good enough alone, eh? ;)

3:17 AM
hahah

@TheUnhandledException There's a point in time where I stop working? :P

I know, that's how I feel!

<~ Still thinking of domain names

Ug. @GeorgeMarian you were right. My boss just called me and said mmy reply to her wasn't appropriate and I shouldn't recommend Linux to clients again. Pffft

3:21 AM
I think domain parking services should force their clients to set a purchase price they'll advertise under a "buy this domain" type link, with instant purchase service

All I was trying to do was save her some money :-)

@TheUnhandledException I'm almost done with this rewrite though, so I'll be happy when that's done. There's been an awful lot of Minecraft sneaking in there today, though.

:sneaks into your Minecraft and sets your largest structure on fire:

Hah.

hahaha. I'm almost done with this new version release @Tim so there'll be some naptime sneaking in between now and, ug, I probably have to get up at 6am to get back on track this week :-(

3:23 AM
@DanGrossman Yeah, that'd be nice, heh. But then they couldn't try to charge you for illogical negotiation services. :P

@Dan and @Tim so the whole MSO/SO crowd plays together?

@TheUnhandledException Nice! Ouch, that sucks. :(
I just play single player at the moment

I just chat in whatever chat room people are talking in at the moment

Hey, I suppose that's what we get for being in demand. We had to sneak an unplanned new module in last week, threw us off trac
LOL @Dan

Being in demand is good, hahah. ;)

3:25 AM
"Clients From Hell" is now the #3 search result for "clients" on Google

@TheUnhandledException Heh. That sucks man. But, it's funny.

I'm glad my pain amuses you @George ;-)
Not the first time Linux has gotten me in trouble at work either, LOL

Uh-oh

Well, being one that can't leave well enough alone either, I know your pain. :)

3:28 AM
(Years ago when I was an intern in Massachusetts I installed Linux on a Mac OS webserver to solve a Mac OS X restriction that users could only be members of 8 groups. I solved the problem but it cost me my job)
Now I'm CTO so that's how I solved my problem of not being able to leave things alone ;-)
(Unless the CEO disagrees like he just did, LOL)

Nice. I like that solution!

@TheUnhandledException Yeah, always that one last cog in the wheel, hahah

@TheUnhandledException Well yah, there is that.

Pfft, never understood why we need those CEOs anyway! ;-)
Always making all those pesky "business rules" and stuff...

I find delegating all of the negotiation and talking to someone else is a lot easier on my...everything. ;)

3:30 AM
I agree @Tim, my prior sarcastic comments aside :-)

Heheh

OK what twit put two public methods at the bottom of this class file with all the private methods? I didn't add a giant "Private Methods" comment for no reason...

So, I had a quick interview with a recruiter from Zynga. She asked me what my ideal job would be... Of course, I answered CTO. :)
5

@GeorgeMarian Brilliant

Good answer. :-)

3:34 AM
I want to star that more. :P

@TheUnhandledException ha Comment intent, not implementation. :)

Owner of a very large electronic farm.

Shows you are willing to work your way to the top! :-D

@TheUnhandledException It was me. I like to sneak my way into other's code and do things to keep them on their toes.

@TheUnhandledException Heck yah!
That and I'm tired of getting stepped on.

3:34 AM
Dang, that makes me a sucke...customer.

@Tim here, I'll help

And at the risk of angering the Chat Gods I will too!

Hahah

Last time I did this all the stars disappeared. We'll see what happens this time :-)
I was told not to abuse the voting system, but these are stars not votes... right?

@TheUnhandledException Right. Don't pay them no nevermind!

3:36 AM
I think the last one may have been for...other reasons. :P

@GeorgeMarian Gone for five minutes to answer two quick jQuery questions, and already somebody wants to be CTO for that company? :P What am I missing here?

@YiJiang I didn't necessarily say I wanted to be their CTO.

@Tim oh shit, that's right. I forgot what it was I double-starred before. now I remember, ROFLMAO

@GeorgeMarian Ah... I see what you did there. :D

You're right. That was due to other reasons :-)

3:38 AM
In fact, I have a beef with Zynga's approach. That said, it could be a decent job and they are making money.

Yeaaaaaaaaaah ;)

As I told her, as long as I'm not killing babies or something atrocious I don't care what I'm programming.

Is there not a Zynga Facebook game that involves killing babies yet?

@GeorgeMarian Our next browser game will be a WWII simulation. You'll be in charge of programming Adolf Hitler eating babies. Wanna join?

3:40 AM
hahaha. You guys are evil

As if Zynga's $5.5 billion valuation wasn't proof enough that Farmville, the company's popular farming-simulation game, is addictive, Alexandra V. Tobias, a 22-year-old mother from Jacksonville, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder today for shaking her 3-month-old to death because he interrupted her while she was playing Farmville on Facebook

@GeorgeMarian They do make Flash content...I'd liken using ActionScript to baby murder.

@DanGrossman StemCellFarmVille

@YiJiang LOL I didn't say anything about virtual babies. ;)

@DanGrossman Oh right, that's even better.

3:41 AM
@Dan I stand corrected. That guy is evil

@DanGrossman That is... wow...

@DanGrossman Wow...

56,100 results for "zynga killing babies"

I read "Alexandra" as Alexander but I'm too lazy to open a browser to edit

3:41 AM
Zynga can't be held criminally responsible for killing that baby.

I'm not too lazy to open a browser to star @George Marian's messages but I'm too lazy to edit my typos :-)

1,370,000 results for "microsoft killing babies", to be fair.

@mootinator They forgot to put in the disclaimer that warns people not to kill their children while tending to their farm.

@DanGrossman Hahaha...

That is hysterical @Dan

3:43 AM
@TheUnhandledException LOL

The next xkcd chart will be one visualizing the amount of babies killed by each company according to Google

Gotta have priorities. :)

@DanGrossman Microsoft is more popular than Obama by that metric. Unexpected.

hm, I suspect a bug in their code: googlefight.com/…

3:45 AM
@TheUnhandledException I think they automatically quote your search.

I'm now open on chrome, what should I go back and look at? :p

@mootinator but -- oh, I just closed and refreshed. Yes, sure is a bug!

Oh, only one result for "google killing babies" definitely a bug.

@drachenstern before, no matter what I did, the right one on
*won

Can't be right - "microsoft killing babies" in quotes only returned 3
(disappointingly)

3:47 AM
lol

That is disappointing

The phrase "killing babies" only appears once on the SO site, it's still so young.
I can't go to sleep tonight until I choose a domain!

@Dan or, there could be another explanation:

idontcareanymoremetrics.com

@Dan you're welcome to have backwardsmile.info ...

3:50 AM
There really are times that I wish my mum has learn't English properly

I used to own babydropping.com

Like when she's stuck on a computer with no IME trying to communicate with me over IM

no you didn't! did you?

> hi, apply international random for your hand

I hope I stopped paying for that anyway.
I did!

3:51 AM
What was the idea for that site?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry @mootinator

@YiJiang Heh :P

@DanGrossman I was inspired by the Michael Jackson baby incident to do something, I can't remember what. Never happened anyway.

Anyone want to take a guess at what she meant? (I guarantee you you won't get it)

3:52 AM
I own fucknuggets.com. I have no idea why.

@YiJiang ehwut?

@YiJiang I am clueless

do you mean :280745?

She wants me to enable International Roaming on my mobile phone

3:53 AM
I can see that

Interpretation: random is a misspelling of roaming

sadly

Ok. I can se that
> fucknuggets.com This page is parked free, courtesy of GoDaddy.com. <http://www.godaddy.com/?isc=GPPT06A001&domain=fucknuggets.com>

hand = handphone = Singaprean corruption of mobile phone

@Dan: Why do you have it parked?

3:54 AM
That's what happens if you buy a domain at GoDaddy and don't specify your own nameservers

You could be making massive cash with that name ;-)

I only have 4-5 useless personal domain names I don't use now.

@DanGrossman At least serve your own blank page, or even better, redirect to McDonalds.com

ahaha

Doooooooo IT!

3:56 AM
I bought it with my business account; some day an IRS auditor is going to come and ask if fucknuggets.com was really a business purchase

omg that would be awesome

ROFLMAO
I'd love to see an IRS auditor say "fuck nuggets dot com" out loud

^ This is why there isn't more people using Android here right now

Where are those ads from? Huh?

Loading, loading, loading...

3:58 AM
Notice how they're only selling last gen Androids?

StarHub as in Star World, or?

@TimStone Starhub is one of the three local mobile operator

I can't tell one phone from the next, there are too many, and they're all bricks with a screen across the front

Ah ha

The iPhone, N8 and Optimus 7 are all current gen. The Milestone is actually the international version of the first Droid
