@PopularDemand - Think "California gold rush", except on SO, by my questions.

Q: Displaying a streaming song title?

MosheI am trying to modify Matt Gallagher's AudioStreamer class to display the file name in the app. At the end of the article, he lists two possible sources for metadata that can provide what I want. It seems that there is a newer post than the one I linked, but there is no major change in the area ...

@Moshe I'm not trying to criticize, mind you. Please don't take offense :-)

@TheUnhandledException - No problem - point taken.
:)

A: The surest way to gain lots of reputation on Stack Overflow- ask questions

wafflesShore, there is always Gold. But they are edge cases, they must have elephant skin cause almost 50% of the votes they get are downvotes. Besides, everybody knows they are Jon and Marcs sock puppet accounts. The surest way to gain lots of rep on SO: Answer lots of questions (and be the first t...

A joke about a very old problem.

@Moshe OK cool. @balpha: Feature request: solve the issue that emotion isn't always conveyed correctly in a text-based chat

LOL
surely that can't be too boring!

10:05 PM
@rchern - Have you worked with Core Data?

It's easy, just prepend emotion to any phrase

Q: How to automatically apply my cryptographic signature to GMail emails?

badpAs I just come out from one of those key signing parties, I'm interested in the ability to cryptographically sign my emails. Provided I was comfortable with storing a low security private key "on the cloud" for signing only purposes, is there a way I could instruct GMail's web interface to autom...

@rchern Yeah, an easy one, right? :-)
@JohntheSeagull disgust That involves work on my part!
@JohntheSeagull humor :-)

@Moshe, what are the first 2 words in the sentence regarding iOS development on my profile? (;

@TheUnhandledException understanding Exactly

10:07 PM
@rchern - Just starting

@rchern "Programmer, mostly"

@radp dupe i'm pretty sure

@rchern - oh well.

@rchern what of? I'm looking at the sidebar

i got an answer on mine that while it doesn't apply to my question maybe it helps you?
1
A: Sign and encrypt web-mail with digital id

mattleI believe this firefox extension may do what you require: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/592/

10:09 PM
Yay I get to vote to close!
2

guess that means i should go close it then eh?

let me actually check the chrome extension...
bah, it's not crypto
@rchern Yeah, go ahead and close it

hahahah you added StackExchange™ MultiCollider SuperDropdown™ to another question?

@rchern obviously, isn't it the official name now?
prolonged exposure to multiple naming is not part of this test

(:

10:14 PM
I starred the upside down smiley, because it's, well... upside down
:)

no it isn't. you are.
see, your smiley is not correct there

poor @rchern

@TheUnhandledException Yeah, it's like awesome! I was there one of the only two people who could possibly cast such a vote!

o: congrats?

(diamonds don't really vote to close, they just close)
@TheUnhandledException uh. no. It was my own question.
Hence the tongue in cheek. :)

10:17 PM
hehehe

I said nothing... :-)

(I have reached 3k rep in Gaming though =D)

when does gaming graduate? thursday?

@radp I'll never be able to do that, LOL. I'm always like 1 or 2 systems behind

"very very soon"
@TheUnhandledException I also am

10:17 PM
What domain name are you not going to be allowed to have?

(no insider knowledge there, just isn't it 1 week behind WA and we graduated on a Thursday)

@TheUnhandledException lol, many

@TheUnhandledException HAHA

we threw more than 200 domain names around

wow
They're so freaking hard to find

10:19 PM
suggestions that gained some amount of traction: boss-level, stagesix, gamingowls
GraceNote's stagesix is by far the best imho but it's 1k$ to get (today)

gamingowls looks like gaming gowls to me no matter how hard I try and read it right, lol
@radp stagesix is sweet

@TheUnhandledException I've been reassured by Irish people that people wouldn't actually associate gowl with vagina actually :P (I cared because it's one of my couple dozen suggestions)
despite what the urban dictionary may suggest

nite, guys

Later @radp

10:27 PM
@later ppl. Another unproductive day wrestling with Objective-C... sigh
@TheUnhandledException (Add frustration to my prior comment)

Sounds like my day if you substitute WorldWind for Objective-C.

Actually @TheUnhandledException I got those purdy icons back onto my iOS device.

@Moshe Sorry to hear that
@mmyers What's WorldWind?

@TheUnhandledException It's ok. I'll get over it. It's just that when you're on a time constraint, it's harder to focus

WorldWind Java, to be precise. worldwind.arc.nasa.gov

10:30 PM
@Moshe I know that feeling!!!
@mmyers Java. Ick!

Fortunately, I am not under a time constraint. At least not much of one.

@TheUnhandledException And in the morning, in school, I get all kinds of ideas. On the way to the office, they all just disappear.

@mmyers lucky

@mmeyers - you work for NASA? or that's just an SDK?

Working on an app using the SDK.

10:31 PM
ok
good luck
Me too, but my app is for a third party with little time constraint . The time constraint is my ride back.
Gotta go actually.

@TheUnhandledException dark look

Find it to be the opposite

I was kidding. I have never learned Java well enough to be any good in it

nite ppl

10:33 PM
later @Moshe

Actually, that list is a little depressing. I used to be the runaway #2, behind only Jon Skeet.

Oh those sweet times
I was actually at once rated third

I also got halfway up page 2 of the users list with a mere 20k rep. Now it takes 48k just to get on the page.

@mmyers Bah. You have reminded me that I once tried and failed to answer a WorldWind question on SO.

Tim
Goodbye...people that have left.
@mmyers That's why I like answering in a tag that's set the bar a little lower :P

10:41 PM
@Tim And someday you'll catch Gumbo, no doubt?

People, you need to get your starring priorities straight. We've had "hi", "(:" and "LOL" tonight. What's the outside world going to think?

Tim
For most of the Java questions, if you don't rush your answer you've already been beat...and I don't like giving half-assed answers where possible, so most of the time I just let the easier questions pass me by.

SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!1!one!

Tim
@mmyers Heh, I guess we'll see about that.

@balpha Outside world? I think you forget that we are on Meta Stack Overflow Chat. ;)

10:43 PM
@Tim Yeah, I saw a bikeshed question earlier today that had three answers, all by 5-digit rep users.
Right now, though, I'm more concerned about Big-Oh and its cousins than Java. Anyone know of a good resource for that that isn't pure math?

Bikeshed question?

Tim
@PopularDemand Yeah, I think I saw something like that earlier too. I mean, answerable questions that aren't duplicates should be answered, but at the same time...ten answers to address a very easy problem seems excessive.

Q: The bike shed problem and SO

shooshIn short, the bike shed problem: If you go before the Board of Directors and ask for 1.5 Billion dollars to build a Nuclear Reactor, no one will review or discuss the details of the plant. They will assume that experts have been over every inch of the plans, and not want to look ...

Parkinson's Law of Triviality (also known as the bicycle shed example, and by the expression colour of the bikeshed) is C. Northcote Parkinson's 1957 argument that organisations give disproportionate weight to trivial issues. Argument The concept is presented in C. Northcote Parkinson's spoof of management, Parkinson's Law. Parkinson dramatizes his Law of Triviality with a committee's deliberations on a nuclear power plant, contrasting it to deliberation on a bicycle shed. A nuclear reactor is used because it is so vastly expensive and complicated that an average person cannot underst...

One of many, many posts about "bikeshedding."
@Tim Actually, I'm complaining that there are no questions left that I'm capable of answering.

10:47 PM
What do you mean?

@rchern Me?

Guess we should get a Bikeshed.Stackexchange.com

@LanceRoberts I proposed it, it got closed down pretty quickly.
It appears to have been deleted.

Probably hard to define therefore the definition itself wouldn't fit in the site.
Recursion wins again.

Hmm

Tim
10:54 PM
@PopularDemand Ah, I see.

No bites on the Big-Oh/Big-Theta/Little-Oh/&c.?
I'm trying to read Cormen, and it is thick.

@Pop, It's been too long since I've been dealing with it, though I'd love to study it more if I had the time. The math is fun, but it's hard to find a good book on it.

@PopularDemand Straight through? My entire senior-level algorithms course only covered about half of it.

You have to stop every once in a while to practice

@mmyers First term of grad school. I've been out of school for a while, so I'm rustier than I thought.
I mean, I remember covering this stuff briefly in high school/undergrad, but the math always lost me at the first expression.

10:59 PM
Ah. I rather liked the book, but then I was in practice at the time. Haven't cracked it open since then.

Tim
Hmm, let me go take a look at my bookshelf..
Well, actually my pile of books that needs to be put on the new bookshelf I haven't gotten around to buying.

Heh. I put my books on the shelf in random order when I moved, "temporarily"... I've considered ordering them, but they look rather nice the way they are.

@PopularDemand OCD much?

@TheUnhandledException In some ways.

I'm the opposite, and wish I wasn't. My desk is a complete mess
Anyway, off to grab dinner. Sadly, I'll be back soon

11:04 PM
@TheUnhandledException Yes, it is sad that you'll be back soon. zing!

@PopularDemand LOL. It is, because that means I have to work late

@TheUnhandledException If it makes you feel better, I'm still in the office too.
Ramen for the win!

Tim
@PopularDemand What sort of detail were you looking for, by the way?

@PopularDemand heh. I suppose this is what we deserve for being in here all day ;-)

@Tim Hm, good question. Not really detail so much as a place to start. You've already helped me some by providing a rubberducking target.

11:10 PM
anyway, bbs

See you, @TheUnhandledException.

Wow. This is what happens when I leave chat open on an unused computer for a couple days:

My initial problem was computation, but that's not something that can be easily discussed here.

Chrome starts to lightly thrash my HDD after about a day. =(
Speaking of HDD thrashing, anyone here use VirtualBox?

Tim
11:13 PM
@GeorgeMarian Very limitedly

@GeorgeMarian sometimes

I've noticed an issue that comes up for long running VM. (By long, I mean about a day or so.) The VirtualBox process ends up with a consistent 2.0 MB/sec I/O. =/

Tim
@PopularDemand Ah, alright. I know that I had a somewhat decent overview of this stuff somewhere, but I'm having a hard time finding it. I did come across something in a discrete math textbook that I have laying around, but I'd have to read it to see if it's any good (it's definitely not comprehensive, since it only goes on for half a chapter or something).

It seems to be registry look ups and possibly tied to vboxc.dll. Any ideas?

@Tim Eh, don't worry about it. I'm just getting thrown by all of the additional terms in the formal definition that you don't usually see, like c-sub-one, lowercase epsilon and n-sub-zero.
Kind of hard to fit that in with what I know about the meaning of O(log(n)).
I appreciate your looking, though.

Tim
11:20 PM
@PopularDemand No problem; if I do happen to stumble across what I was looking for and you're still looking, I'll let you know. Otherwise, good luck, my memory about those kinds of details has mostly been erased by sleepless nights of bug fixing and API reading, heh.
@GeorgeMarian Hmm..

I just started it up and I notice it's going at it again. Restarting the process (not just the guest) would clear it up before. =/

i don't have my virtualbox vm running that long...never seen an issue

@Tim Oh, it'll be hours, I'm sure.
Surprisingly few SO questions on the lowercase versions.

I did recently install DropBox, so that's different. And, for some reason, it did seem network related. Quite a mystery.

Tim
@GeorgeMarian I remember having to kill off VirtualBox once because it was randomly getting sluggish all of a sudden, but since it only happened once I didn't pay much attention to it. Otherwise I just use it for recompiling an instance of Apache I use for debugging strange mod_rewrite behaviours, so it's normally not up that long.

11:31 PM
@Tim I use to for dev on a small client's website, so sometimes it's stays running for a while. It may just be enough motivation to finally slap ubuntu on a my old desktop, which I've been meaning to do anyway, though I like the fact that I can just make a copy of the virtual HDD for a quick and dirty backup.

Tim
@GeorgeMarian What version are you running?

@Tim 3.2.8

Tim
Yeah, I've been meaning to set up a separate box for that too...if only there were more hours in a day. Of course, I'm not sure what I actually accomplished today..so maybe that's not the answer. :P

lol
I'm trying to configure a Vim colorscheme right now and wishing I had my config for my old job.
That was part of the reason for installing DropBox.
