7:04 PM
Man, it's even quieter than usual today.

When you can hear a pin drop...
... in the server room ...
... of the web application you're using ...
then it's quiet!

lol
brb...gots to reboot

@LasseVKarlsen True story.
Feeling better?

Good to hear.

7:08 PM
not 100% rid of the infection, but nowhere near as I was on thursday :)
I had a presentation at some local forum for developers that night
And I rushed towards the end of the slides, because they ended with the slide "DEMO", which meant I could sit down in front of the computer :)
I had trouble standing upright :)

Ah, that's not good.

7:22 PM
Heh...apparently, after the reboot, my headphones weren't plugged in enough. doubl-you teeeee effffffff...

@GeorgeMarian Are you still going on about that? How hard could it be to stick it in at the exact correct arbitrary amount every time?

@PopularDemand Heh. The right channel is working just fine now with it plugged in all the way, but I wonder for how long...
Soon, I hope to solve this issue with a decent set of speakers.
I can't decide if I should go with a set of Logitech X540 5.1 or just a really nice 2.1 set.

@GeorgeMarian Can't help you there. For a tech geek, I really hate technology.

@PopularDemand LOL I know how you feel sometimes. I used to keep up with all the latest CPU, RAM, GPU & mobo offerings. Then I realized it was bugging the crap out of me and I could do better things with my time.

My computer is 2.5 years old now, still running most games OK

7:31 PM
Now, I just hit up my friends for the latest info and do research when I'm in the market for a new pc.

I mostly play on my Xbox 360 these days

@GeorgeMarian I got myself this one today:
really nice

Ugh, New Vegas is so far away.

even if it looks weird

@LasseVKarlsen My prefious PC was soooo ancient, it could barely run Eve Online.

7:32 PM
Starcraft 2 ran fine on this machine
I'm hoping Diablo 3 will run too

Okay. No point in remaining at the office any longer. Talk to you when I get home, perhaps.

@balpha Interesting and about the same price as the logitech 5.1.

Only investment I've done this year is a pair of Logitech G35 headphones

I also listened to the logitech one. I felt this one sounded way better.

"this one"?

7:33 PM
the creature

ah
I got a pair of speakers as well, an Altec Lansing set

@balpha The reviews complaining about the sound quality of the logitech is one of the things that has me worried about it.

But I use the headphones a lot, playing team-based online games, like starcraft, wow, borderlands
And I needed a replacement set for my old one, which was starting to show its age

of course, this one was unbeatable when it comes to sound quality:
but I didn't want to pay that price for computer speakers

I finally upgraded for my birthday a few months ago. One of my gf's co-workers was looking to part out his system, so she bought me the case & PSU. I then proceeded to buy the rest of the system. LOL
@balpha Yah, that's the deal breaker for me. Not that I don't spend a lot of time in front of my PC, but I also need a sound system for the flat screen and a bunch of other things. Being unemployed sucks, but I hope I can maintain the discipline once I'm working again.

8:03 PM
Can't SO just get its own .qa TLD and be done with it?
gaming.qa, webapps.qa, cactus.qa!

why quatar? why not sweden?

q-a
questions-answers
<.<
I wish it took more than 8$ to register a .com domain.

i got it
again, why not sweden?

user151055
@MetroidFA thanks for the help

@balpha Oh, I thought .se was for serbia

8:16 PM
hehe
[HTTP: Unable to run web browser: /usr/bin/lynx: No such file or directory]
pros at work, there

anyway gaming.se is taken

we could go the other way round
create lots of tlds, each with just two domains
questions.gaming
meta.gaming

or create an .answers tld

anyone have any friends at ICANN?

guys?
Does "ludoers" make any sense to you?
or ludentes, which is latin for "gamers"

8:27 PM
or luddites
or ludopaths

luddites taken

(luddites are people averse to technology, so even if available wouldn't make much sense, I was joking)

can we please take over namedia so we can take over ludo.com?
:P

Is there a new badge or something for resurrection old questions? The last couple of questions I've looked at are really old, either with new edits or new answers

Q: .Net 2.0 - How efficient are Generic Lists?

Daniel MagliolaI'm creating an app that holds loads of loads of user data in memory, and it's mostly keeping it all in List<T> structures (and some Dictionary<T,T> when I need lookup). And I'm wondering... How efficient are Lists? How much memory overhead do I get for each of them? (that is, memor...

Q: LINQ TO SQL error: An attempt has been made to Attach or Add an entity that is not new...

Collin Estes"An attempt has been made to Attach or Add an entity that is not new, perhaps having been loaded from another DataContext. This is not supported." I have scene a lot of solutions dealing with the Attach() method but I'm just trying to add in a new record. Not sure what is going on. Here is my...

Or is it the general rule, that people are just idiots? :)

I can't begin to describe how much I hate MySQL... How can these guys be allowed to live? Seriously?

... how come?

It is apparently impossible to reinstall on a machine that has already had it installed

windows?

Yes
A fresh install, after uninstalling it, and I don't give a crap about existing information, I've deleted everything I can find
... still insists on asking what the current password of my server is
and fails to start because the password is wrong, which it isn't

hmm.. that sucks

9:57 PM
yeah, but what can you expect from a database built by kids

have you checked the windows services list?

yes, there is a service there
starting it, runs for 5 seconds, then it stops, leaving an "Error 17 occured" in the event log
Helpful, it is not

maybe if you run it from the command line it will give a more helpful answer

How do I do that?

i'd find mysqld.exe and try running it (you know how to use the command line right?)

10:00 PM
yes, I do know how to use the command line :)

I'm glad

Running mysqld gives me nothing, except for a new prompt

new prompt?

yeah, no message

ah.. sorry I can't be more help.. party here, company just arrived.. see ya!

10:09 PM
:)

10:29 PM
Google says that mysql error 17 means it is trying to write on an existing file for which it doesn't have permissions. Does that give a clue? Also try mysqld --verbose

mysqld --verbose also gives nothing
the error log in the data directory says that it just crashes, and that "you might have encountered a bug"
I'll find a .NET-based blog-software instead I think
Or at least something that wasn't originally built for MySQL

10:48 PM
Well, I give up
Finally made MySQL start, by manually doing all the configuration, now I am trying to connect to my database for my blog and get "Table 'vkarlsen_blog.wp_users' doesn't exist.
Although show tables clearly shows the table

Can anyone tell me where can I get programming problems like ACM ?but of a bit low level, I mean intermediate

What is "ACM"?

Ask Comment get Moderated

I still don't know what "ACM" is.. Is it a site?

they have programming tests, contests, publish papers
I suspect he means problems from one of the contests

11:03 PM
Ok, I don't really want to "suspect" though
Sounds an awful lot like "I assume"

@fahad Did you mean the problems from the contests or some other problem set?

It's a pretty safe bet though

I'm sorry, I'm a bit grumpy because of MySQL tonight :P
My blog went down and I have pretty much given up getting my data back without reinstalling the whole machine

You could probably blame Windows as well

At least Windows runs :P
MySQL failed to load, when I finally coaxed it into running, it won't recognize my database

11:06 PM
MySQL does too, it just doesn't on your machine

Like, show tables lists all my tables, yet MySQL will subsequently say "table XYZ does not exit"

This looks like an awful lot of user permissions problems

Could be, but granting user access doesn't work either

did you reinstall with another user? Have encrypted partitions? Some other weird thing?. BTW, did you try the standard recovery procedures?

And the main problem is that I don't know, because no error message gives me something to go on
I upgraded MySQL
from 5.0x something to latest 5.1x version
First I upgraded Wordpress, then it had a warning about me running an older version of MySQL
So I upgraded MySQL, after which it won't recognize my database

11:09 PM
MySQL has their database files in a single directory and two (or three) files per each database
can you read those files with MySQL server's user?

I don't know, how do I "read" them?

open them for reading

You mean like in Notepad or whatever?

user151055
@CRoss yes

Notepad is a bit risky, I'd try an hex editor if you have one

11:11 PM
I'm not going to save the files
But considering the mysql database is currently running as administrator, I sure hope it can read the files

user151055

good
