12:14 AM
Hm, I really need to find a way to dissipate the heat this desktop puts out. Winter needs to come faster, heh.

@Tim: I need to do the same thing with my car.

Tim
@Dexter That sounds like it might be a little more serious than my problem :P

@Tim: True. How do you plan to solve your desktop problem?

Tim
I'm not sure. The components are well-cooled, but the amount of warm air that thing pushes out tends to build up in my room. I have the windows open right now, but someone outside continues to make obnoxious noises, so I can only stand that so long before it drives me crazy. The air conditioning would work, but the rest of the house is far too cool for it to come on right now, so oh well.

12:30 AM
desk fan?

Tim
I've got my ceiling fan on, but that might not be a bad idea either.

@Tim: I'm doing the same thing with my PS3 (open windows, fans, etc.). If you find a good and cheap solution let me know.

At one point I had a desk fan pointed at the back of my computer hehe.

@rchern: Thats what I have next to my PS3.
This could be interesting. A water cooled PS3.

Tim
Nice, I've seen the water-cooled 360 mods, but I think that's the first PS3 I've seen.

12:36 AM
I've heard that the mods actually speed up gameplay. Anyone know for sure?

I am so rage right now... I just broke my 88 day streak for fanatic
for the second time

Tim
@rchern I've been contemplating a duct to direct the exhaust from my fans, heh. I'm also not sure whether it's better to keep the case fans on low or turn them up..
@Dexter Admittedly, no idea. The only thing I've really considered modding my 360 for was to try and reduce the damn noise from the DVD drive. I haven't had any problems with the PS3, so I've left it alone. :P

I don't think I would ever mod mine unless it messed up and I got a new one.

1:06 AM
@Dexter - that concept applies to any of my electronics, except for my computer, possibly
Well, I just merged two iPod Nano 3rd gen, successfully.

@Moshe: Agreed (and I would include my computer).

@Dexter - adding memory doesn't count as a mod then, I guess.
Anyone ever built a surface computer?
I was contemplating it.
By surface, I mean Microsoft Surface, multittouch, that is.

@Moshe: Never heard of that until now. Looking at it reminds me of this SNL skit.

1:30 AM
@rchern What the heck is 4guysfromrolla?
@NathanTaylor Been there, bud.

@rchern Your first post said there was malware, so you'll understand that I'm not interested in clicking that link.
Another "stop closing everything" post, everyone take a drink:

hehehe, well it was on a demo page several links in, not the homepage and not the article page i was looking at. shrugs

That may be the best YouTube video I've ever seen (okay, of the like five that I've ever seen that weren't clips of movies or TV shows).
@rchern I just saw a comment indicating that SU -> NTI migration is enabled; is this true?

'tis

1:41 AM
Howdy, @GraceNote!

for several days

@rchern O frabjous day!

Oy, @Pop, @rchern

(I haven't been on SU for a while.)
@GraceNote How's my favorite archnemesis doing today?

@Popular Potentially beating you in terms of absence from SU

1:43 AM
@GraceNote I don't remember ever seeing you on SU, except perhaps if you use a different username there.

That aside, it's mostly been sailing the seas or getting crushed inside of undersea volcanos. You?

@GraceNote Another busy day of wasting my life on Meta.
Finally got over a headache about 10 minutes ago; I went into work today, and they were painting; the fumes must have been stronger than I realized at the time.

Uf, that's always bothersome.
I use the ccomet name on SU. I've asked a grand total of one question and only otherwise pop in there on the occasional link from Meta, Gaming, or Web Apps

Why are people so excited about question 1.0 x 10^6?

Milestones are enjoyable things to hit.
Have you ever lived in an imageboard?

1:53 AM
@GraceNote Negative.

Well, let's just summarize it as "People will fight wars to hit the milestone number".

that number doesn't even reflect a "question number", it's just the current count of active questions. If a question is deleted, that number goes down.

@Greg That just means more parties, I would imagine. They could seesaw at 1m just to get many celebrations.

@GregHewgill Exactly!
Though honestly, I don't see this happening.
By the time the count reaches 999,500, people will be falling over each other to post questions.

you think so? why?

1:57 AM
We hit the actual millionth post over a year ago,.

Even accounting for a bunch of them being crap questions, there'll probably be enough that deletions won't push the number below seven digits.

Yay for invisible editing!

Wow, I just realized I missed a golden opportunity on that movie thread.
"And Grace Note as: the soundtrack"

Stack Overflow gets too many questions for a reasonable seesaw

@GraceNote: keep in mind that the question id is shared with answer ids too

1:58 AM
random question, anybody know if the data dump indicates whether a question is closed? and does it include deleted questions?

I don't really feel like resurrecting that post now that it's fallen off the main page, though.

@Greg Hence "post" rather than question
@Popular Ironically, I was actually always the lighting person in school theatre.

ah, there's a closed date

When I wasn't on stage, at any rate.
@rchern There is no corresponding "deleted date", apparently, so I'm not certain that deleted questions are directly available.

deleted questions are still in the database but not in the published data dump
they're visible to 10k+ users

2:03 AM
thanks. looking for some stats of voting in WA's data dump and wanted to make sure i was excluding closed and deleted

Oh, WA's already got a data dump?

yup. we're in the one they just released the other day

Neato!

Indeed!

I wonder how glitchy Fallout: New Vegas is going to be.
(I did load up chat.gaming.SE but it's deserted.)

2:06 AM
Hmmm.... what's the GMT time when 10.10 is released?

hello all

@AidenBell Yo.

Oy, @Aiden

The countdown timer is officially in the "almost there" mode

@PopularDemand @GraceNote What's happening
@YiJiang - Get a proper distro :P

2:09 AM
@AidenBell About to do battle with my BIOS.

@AidenBell Pssshht...

@Aiden Relaxing before setting sail again

@PopularDemand Nasty @GraceNote Saily
@GraceNote is that real sailing or metaphorical/metaphysical lol

@AidenBell And what do you use? CentOS?
Actually, Fedora's more likely

@YiJiang - Fedora
lol

2:11 AM
@AidenBell @Grace is a gangsta boat programmer.

@PopularDemand - Tidal

@Aiden I have a boat, it has a foremast, I have raisins as provisions to eat, and occasionally get thrashed by crashing into pirates. I keep it real.

@YiJiang You psychic or something

(It's in a video game)

@AidenBell Second most popular distro... what's so hard to guess

2:12 AM
@YiJiang Gonna have to go Hurd, obscurify
@GraceNote - Watch out for this guy, he is teaching kids: greenwich.co.uk/news/04032-johnny-depp-london-school-visit

@AidenBell It's a valid response, but it should really be an edit to the question, but the accounts got disassociated, so he can't actually edit

A: CSS and <input type='file'> - Discussion

Yi JiangWell, first of all these hacks arn't just from any 'ol random programmer. This one from quirksmode, for instance, is from a well respected source and, as far as I can tell, widely used (It's used here for the image upload dialog). Another example is this one created for the ajax upload script. Ig...

@AidenBell ... the icosahedrons?

Same name, two difference accounts

<----- Anyone elses user popups not responding?

popups?

nm, net problem

2:22 AM
chat just went down
briefly
got redirected to the error page

@YiJiang - Edited some and flagged for ya
@Mark - Just when I needed it lol
@PopularDemand the icosahedrons?

Hey, it's back

@YiJiang also +1 for answer ;)

can't believe i actually decided to write the parser (for fun) in this question stackoverflow.com/questions/3898548/…
mostly in disbelief because stephen c's answer was accepted, and i commented virtually the same
sigh

@Mark should have gone all JLex/Bison and gone to town. +1 though, does it run?

2:29 AM
it does
infinite depth, and it's fairly tolerant of bad syntax
(for better or for worse)

Dedication

haha, it seemed simple enough (and was)
sometimes i do these things to "remember" how to do them
and then I think to myself "shouldn't have spent the time"
never used JLex

Then you are the real winner, not Stephen C (in reply to remembering)

@AidenBell heh, indeed

@PopularDemand - You alive? icosahedrons?

2:48 AM
Heh, the engine thinks those comments are for me. I was a bit confused at first.
Is that a little oversight in the chat engine? ("Mark" matching "Mark C"?)

It's supposed to match anyone that fits the pattern

status-by-design

Okay

status-hyphen-overflow

So I could do @A ?
Or what about @*?

2:50 AM
It needs to be at least three letters, like on the main sites

same as the sites. 3 letter min

And no wildcards
For a while @@@ would accidentally match everyone, but they took that away :(

though there was a brief point where we could alert everybody in here in any room lol

Wait, so the @name actually works there?

@MarkC, yes

2:50 AM
@MarkC Yes it does

I thought that was just a helper, since I seemed to get mailbox notifications without those

It defaults to the last post posted by that person

A: How do comment replies work?

Roger PateImplemented in January 2010, you can use @name syntax anywhere in your comment to reply to a specific user. This will notify that user in their recent replies. There are a few rules to follow for it to work: Notifications apply to the author, commenters, and editors of the question or answer ...

Thanks. How do I insert questions? (FAQ stuff, I know)

@MarkC Just drop the URL on it's own line

2:52 AM
It must be the faq link down there on the right

@user1 I wonder how many people this notifies

It should say "chat" though, that seems ambiguous
HM have fun with that

If the system recognizes it, it'll create the onbox thingy

The list is here:

@AidenBell Did you make that?

3:28 AM
@Chacha102 - Yea, and you have missed a few more

@AidenBell We should petition Jeff to make that an ad :)

A: Why SO maintenance upgrade take longer than expected?

Jeff Atwood in the case of SO I think that they are smarter, more methodological, more prepared for the upgrade. Thank you for your confidence in our abilities, but you've made fourthree mistakes!

3:32 AM
Aww f***, it is 4:32 in the morning; I need a couple of hours. Later.

question for y'all: when do you downvote a question?

@rchern When it's impossible to answer, when it's overtly inflammatory or contains too much personal opinion
That's for non-subjective sites, not, say Programmers, obviously

@rchern When my random number generator gives me a number less than 1,000

@rchern Or when the OP obviously made no attempt at answering the question

Thanks.

A: What does voting mean and why is it important?

rchernVoting is the currency of our site. Each day, we get 30 votes to spend. It is important that users (myself included!) try and use up these votes each day. @rchern Should I post each my <del>complaints</del> bugs about the new design in a separate question? Because I suspect the list might get too long and I'll be spaming meta

Q: Targeted answer in URL hash fades to white not transparent

Yi JiangWhen you use an answer link the answer in question is highlighted briefly when you visit the link. The highlighting fades to white for the current sites. For example, try this link: http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/7931/the-official-faq-for-stack-overflow-server-fault-and-super-user/7935#7...

Q: New Design Launched

JinHi guys, The wait is over! As you can see the new design has been applied and nothingtoinstall.com is live. I'd like to address a few issues. captcha image There were a few suggestions from the Captcha thread. It seems most people like the robot theme. Due to copyright issues, I can't use t...

@rchern Yeah, I've already done that
But I remembered Jin stating that he'd prefer separate questions instead.

3:55 AM
i think he said "new posts" which is somewhat ambiguous (;

@rchern As you can see, I've already got a super duper long post there with all my <del>bugbears</del> bugs

i've seen, yeah (:
i'm not seeing what you do regarding the fading bg color

4:33 AM
my sleep schedule is so messed up

I don't think chat can handle vimeo links yet
Which kind of sucks, since vimeo is such a nice service

Sleep schedules are for lesser people

it doesn't really handle youtube urls though. it displays it like it is going to be embedded, but it just opens it into a new tab anyway

@rchern Nah, I'd prefer it that way
The box is too small for videos anyway

seems silly to me, but i rarely click the videos anyway

4:39 AM
I wonder how they grab that preview frame
Probably part of the YouTube API

i'd imagine

Vimeo's simple API doesn't look half bad: vimeo.com/api/docs/simple-api#video

@rchern seconded

There, I extracted the thumbnail info from the API
The API's really nice! Feature request time

make it a controversial one...they don't like boring requests (;

4:43 AM
@rchern I imagine cursing a lot would get you noticed

lol, haven't gone that route (;

> Right, you zarkers, we need to turn this turd bucket around and add those pormwraggling oneboxie thingies for the Belgium Vimeo video which every guy in this unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the galaxy is using!

ha

The Simple API is zarking easy to use - just extract out the video ID, then send a request to the correct URL, extract the thumbnail, and YOU HAVE ONEBOX!!!
Belgium...
Let's take this onebox thingy apart
The image is obviously obtained from the API
The play button is actually a ► character...

8:07 AM
Hehe, they got their own domain :)

let's hope it turns out to be a huge success ;)

@radp I'm already there bugging Jin about the font
2
Q: Can we please have another font for the body text

Yi JiangThe new design is great, but the font is really killing me. Here's why: Uneven kerning and spacing Have a look at this title. The space between n and e in uneven, r and n in kerning, a and c in spacing are all wrong! There are a lot of other examples, but a font like this just isn't conducive ...

lol
it's the Ubuntu font
10.10 uses it everywhere

@radp Uh oh... but yeah, I know that
It's just that the font is still a display font
And the kerning for size 15, which is used for h3 headers is horrible

@YiJiang if you have trouble with it you should report bugs

8:11 AM
It's a nice place, and with the buzz of 10.10 the size is moving along quite smoothly
The only problem is that there's now a flood of "When is 10.10 coming out" questions :D

The font is supposed to look good no matter what :)

@radp It's asking me to sign in/up
Oh, launchpad
Hmmm... I don't know... I don't have an account there
Oh wait! OpenID! Ah ha!

yep ;)

> Password must be at least 8 characters long, and must contain at least one number and an upper case letter.
:(
What the hell is wrong with them?

remind me not to change my password then
I don't have the upper case letter :D

8:19 AM
@radp Oh! I see why the bold text is causing so much problem
They're not actually using the correct files
The bold text is the browser's
Which is causing problems

2 hours later…
10:32 AM

A: What can we do to make Community Wiki better?

wafflesI have an easy idea for a fix. Disable the option to mark questions community wiki by the question author. (allow them to become CW naturally if thats what GxD wants, or allow moderators to) Look at this list for example: Last 100 questions that were wiki from get go. I'm counting may 1/10...

11:48 AM
@waffles What's "GxD"?

Don't you find it odd that a discussion of merging several technical Area51 sites is off-topic meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/65577 , while a discussion of merging music sites is on-topic: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/65176

Greyhound eXpress Delivery

I'm starting to feel that they promoted ubuntu.se too early
There are exactly 7 people who can edit other people's posts
And 3 to close
(not counting mods for these numbers)

Tim
@YiJiang Hm, and how many members are there?

5*7*80pages
5 * 7 * 80 = 2 800
Slightly less than 2800 users

11:57 AM
So that's about 0,25% of users that can edit

SO's number's should be skewed
By a large number of inactive users
But let me check

About 1.6% there
Around page 124/125 you start having users below 2500 (is that the limit?)

@LasseVKarlsen 2000 is the limit

That's page 155, out of 7680 pages, ~ 2% then

5150 / 327 509 = 0.0157247587
Odd
The numbers shouldn't be so far off

12:01 PM
7168 pages on SO
if there's 35 users a page, 325709 users are over 9000 pages
there seems to be a mismatch here

@LasseVKarlsen The odata data should have less, not more users

Because of the time difference you mean?
(stale data)

It's over a month now, so there should be a difference
But the difference should be in the other direction, there should be more reported on SO than in the data

I agree
But unless my math is off, it's the other way around

Tim
12:15 PM
Anyway, it does seem like there's a disproportionate amount of people to manage the community @YiJiang
Hopefully it won't be too much of an issue this early on though, which is time for others to get to that level too.

If you must know, this question sat there for about an hour before @balpha closed it

I think someone should answer "Yes, it's immoral" here:

Q: Moderators answering question and locking other answers

dalleIs it right for moderators to answer a question and locking other answers to the same question? I think this act is immoral and a sign that the moderator should have their moderator status revoked. Clarification: By locked I mean locked and not closed. Example: Questions on meta.stackoverflow....

so I can answer "No it's not" and lock the other answer

@balpha make your day

@balpha ... with extreme prejudice

@balpha you should've downvoted it before locking it!
