How complicated would it be to have the chat system take the explicit read access list into account when a chat room is not in gallery mode?

do you want to turn "read-access" into "read-only"? I don't know how complicated, but it's diametral to its current meaning.

I've said it before: The way you use the Gallery status is not the way it's intended to work. I know you guys are doing a great job in keeping the quality up in your room by "abusing" the feature, and we tolerate that, but we're not going to totally reverse the meaning of access control just for that room.

There are precendents for that; unless it's getting abused, it's tolerated.
