hey @Sha the site you linked me once was node.js driven right? i'd love to know how to set up a web server on a domain with node, but no clue and i guess my search queries are shit, aaaand i avoid asking on SE, it seems my questioning is shit, i never got a single upvote

like i'd like to have a small server running somewhere and have it to be accessible via a domain, or even better some server to rent for beginning with that

@ClemensHimmer oh. Yeah, there's no special software on the server. Essentially just the node.js process running the project, and node.js code that establish the server and defines the port etc.

You need it ssl? Because that makes it lots harder, with keys and all

@ShadowWizard oookay, yeah i run my server on my local machine and can access it via the local network, but i have no clue how i can get that directed to a domain :S

so e.g. you can now go to something.com and it will access my server

@ClemensHimmer oh, that's something different, never done something similar. :/

We have server dedicated for the client, hosted and all, so it got its own IP thus a domain.

@ClemensHimmer yes, domain is just an alias to IP address.

When buying the domain, you can decide what IP to redirect to, and can pass some extra parameters, port for sure and maybe even headers.

ooh okay, so i just have to get a server look for my public IP and give that to the domain guys that will redirect to my IP?

@ClemensHimmer this, and make sure your machine is publicly accessible from the outside. These days I think Windows itself is blocking such access by default, so you'll have to tweak the firewall, not to mention the network firewall you probably have. (Assuming you mean your computer at work?)

@Clem don't want to depress you but honestly, I found it's a real headache to make an ordinary machine accessible - you better either use a Server in the network, or host it somewhere, e.g. Amazon has a good free package, though no Windows.

@ClemensHimmer they give you a standalone unix server, you can put whatever you want on it, as far as I know. @Pro got one, he put the bot in there.

@ShadowWizard i actually had network technology for my a levels, thought i'd get a 5 (1-5 are marks in austria, 5 the worst) but the teached didn't want to let me fail them and gifted me a 3, i would have 1,2 without it :D

If he wants a domain, he'd not just have to pay for the cloud but also for the domain. Or he should edit his HOSTS file to redirect some domain to a local IP.

@Clem if your goal is to make it possible for someone else anywhere in the world access a node.js website you built, you can just give him/her IP address, you don't have to use a domain. Domain is just more elegant, like a casing, or a cover. :)

But still, giving your own IP won't be a good idea, so better find a server.

Yeah, if it's to open something up you don't need a cloud if...
a) port forwarding works on your router (it didn't on my previous one, didn't check on my new one)
b) your computer and router can be turned on permanently
c) you trust the people who get your IP
