@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Stardew Valley :P And I also restarted Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
Technically Graveyard Keeper is bloody and I still play that occasionally?

@Tinkeringbell kudos

9:44 PM
So close to 10k now
SE finally posted another feedback post :p

Yawn
Let me hurry up and downvote a post of yours.
Oh, dear, global warming is now heating up my browser too.

Annoyingly, I did get a downvote :p

:D
That's a surprisingly calm post. Who's committing identity theft as @Zoe?

In the past 10 or so months, I've grown increasingly apathetic (really? could've sworn it was meant to be "apathic", but whatever) to what the company does
If they want, they're going to crash the site into the ground, no matter how loudly we try to pull them out of their nosedive

Norwegian is the new English, use apatisk.
@Zoeisonstrike Has that state of mind only grown in relation to SE, or more?

9:59 PM
Only to SE

... mostly

@Zoeisonstrike But that's their goal. Just need to hold off until ProsusAI works as intended.
@Zoeisonstrike Seek help.
Seriously.

I stopped using Ecosia a while ago, a tree-planting and pro-environmental search engine, because they suddenly decided to push genAI, a money drain (less trees) with a significant and negative environmental impact
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact it's not a negative thing, actually

@Zoeisonstrike Don't you use Firefox too...?
@Zoeisonstrike It is. It means you're burning out.
You won't realize there's no flame left until it's too late.

10:02 PM
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Yes, but they don't actively label themselves as a pro-environment organisation. Ecosia spends 80% of their profits on trees, so when genAI eats those profits, they're unrecoverably undermining their own primary goal

genAI is a disease. The society should spend as much resources as it did on corona vaccines, for an antidote.
Anyway.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact That was the root cause, but not the reason it persists. The consequence isn't no flame, it's the realisation that fighting certain entities at full steam is the problem. What I've been doing is equivalent to trying to stop a 1.524*10^7kg fully-loaded freight train by feeding the engagement metric they use as justification, at great expense to both my time and energy. After I cut most of my interaction with SE, I've realised how much time that freed up - particularly after the strike
organisation

You no longer like trains?
Well, as long as you have something else meaningful to fill that time with.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I love trains :p just not the act of trying to stop one with nothing but my body weight
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Yeah, and that's what happened. Not dealing with all of SE's shit has resulted in an observable improvement to my overall quality of life. That's why I'm not concerned

@Zoeisonstrike Well, I guess it worked out for you, then. That's great.
Could've gone the other way.

10:15 PM
I'm painfully aware

You witnessed others going down that lane?
Due to SE?

No, I've been there before, for reasons unrelated to SE
Let's just say 1-10th grade was not fun and leave it at that

Ah. Same as me, then.

Anyway, I can has 10k now :p

Congrats
But I thought you didn’t care about that anymore. ;)

10:30 PM
I've always liked access to information :p
I also suspect leaving SO has resulted in an unhealthy addiction/habit/whatever you wanna call it - sysadmining

Oh, no.
Poor Zoe.
Signing you up for an anti-addiction talk group

I like it though

That’s how all addictions start.

Got me back on digital calendar and task tracking systems

Wait, what?
Have you been using paper calendars?

10:36 PM
Bullet journal, but basically

Linus disproves of you

I doubt Linus can disprove me :p
Disapprove, maybe :p

Linus cries in despair
Linus disproves Zoe’s spellchecking results

I even briefly installed jellyfin
Until I realised transcoding is incredibly CPU-heavy, and kinda needs a GPU to be efficient or worth it at all
And because I have some mkvs, it's easier to just stream it off sshfs

What are you transcoding?

10:42 PM
mkvs, because they're a proprietary format that browsers don't support or something like that

So I then tried to transcode it with my main computer and cache MP4s (where, even if I can't get ffmpeg to use my GPU, I at least have twice as many cores, twice as much RAM, and everything is faster), but ffmpeg is hard, so ended up with the wrong audio track in the mp4, and no subtitles

ffmpeg from the command line? Maybe you can write a script that uses the API, and force it on the GPU there.
Maybe I should get rid of my computers. Go live in nature. Maybe nature will transcode me.

The only real reason I wanted to try jellyfin was so I could get access to stuff on my phone, because the alternative is incredibly annoying
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact mhm, but ffmpeg is hard no matter where it's used
Using the GPU should, in theory, be a matter of using a single flag, but it may or may not need cuda
Last time I tried installing CUDA, I broke my driver :p

CUDA?
Oh, right.
Thought you had AMD GPUs.
Just remembered you have NVidia.
Maybe try OpenCL or Vulkan instead.

10:51 PM
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I have an ancient AMD GPU that came with the server
Unplugged it early on though. It's loud, didn't have a use until like, now, and the case (Dell case) has not great thermals

Seems expensive.
Anyway. I’ve been awake since 6 in the morning, so I’m kind of falling asleep. Good night. :)

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I bought a used Dell optiplex to repurpose as a server. It was not expensive :p
If I bothered investing in proper server hardware, I would've probably had a dedicated media server

1 hour later…
