~ Look at Life: In the Shadow of the Wall

6 hours later…
8:34 AM
@AnnZen numb

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard ache (?)

@Ann how you find the time to manage all those Facebook groups and be active on SO/SE and even here? Must be hard... well done! :)

user912062
hi

You're not Ann. Or are you? ;)

user912062
if I were ann i weren’t kicked yesterday

8:37 AM
Why? You can get punished for self harm as well. I think? lol

user912062
hmm

Well at least in religions, there is punishment by God for causing self harm. I think.

user912062
blah blah

Let me check...
@M.A.R. !!

@Sha !!

8:38 AM
You saw "religion" so you popped in?

user912062
@M.A

user912062
haha

No I turned on the computer so I popped in

Maybe you can save me trip to Google, according to Islam, if one cause self harm to himself, will he get punished? @M.A.R.

Yes I think so.

8:39 AM
So tell that to @Rock

Wouldn't it be the same in most religions?
@Rock yes I think so.
At least most Abrahamic religions
Which is why every duty in Islam is bound by that "don't harm yourself" thing.

@M.A.R. not sure, remember watching movies where religious people slapped themselves with a glaive for committing sins.

If you have a broken leg and can't say your prayers standing up, then you should say them while you've sat down or something
If fasting is bad for you, you don't need to fast, you just have to donate a bit for every day you don't fast.
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard I think this is mostly oriental philosophy that sipped in. In Islam you also have these sufi people that go overboard with hating this world

user912062
@M.A.R. oh

@RocketNikita blush (?)

user912062
8:42 AM
@FOX9000 u silly bot

So even if Quran explicitly says not to cause self-harm, some people even today do it and fancy themselves some sort of monk I guess

user912062

@RocketNikita I'm FOX 9000, ProgramFOX's chatbot. You can find the source code on GitHub. You can get a list of all commands by running >>listcommands, or you can run >>help command to learn more about a specific command.

@M.A.R. so it's case of interpreting the holy books in a different way, which can be far from the original intention.

user912062
>>listcommands

@FOX9000 !!delete!!
@FOX9000 !!delete
oh well
hides behind @M.A.R

HE'S HERE HE'S HIDING HERE
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Not this time actually. Quran explicitly says no religious duty should cause harm to you, and if it does, you don't have to do it.
It's just a paradox. For centuries some people thought being religious is making yourself hate everything you enjoy, even food
You can read about "sufis".
Basically pacifist hermits that thought the only way to salvation is to divorce yourself from all the enjoyments of life and be miserable and pray in a corner
They deliberately wore harsh clothing and fasted for long periods of time and stuff
So it wasn't just masturbating or something that they hated. It's like anorexia but for everything

user912062
8:56 AM
@FOX9000 WTF!!? WHO DID THIS?

user912062
ahem

user912062
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard ARGHHHHH!!!!

user912062
@M.A.R. WHERE IS @SHA?!

@RocketNikita RIGHT HERE

user912062
9:17 AM
@SHA I SEE YOU!

9:34 AM
@M.A.R. That worked out well :')

9:51 AM
@M.A.R. well forbidding masturbation in religion as far as I know isn't to forbid pleasure, but rather to prevent loss of sperm which can be used to reproduce. It's just practical.
So "pull out" or even using condoms is forbidden.

1 hour later…
10:53 AM
~ Who needs sleep here?

11:43 AM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard yeah I'm saying it's not just that. These people have this sort of logic that if you don't do anything, you won't do bad things either
@Zoethe1337Princess in what way?
Can't parse your message Zoe
Are you referring to sufis?

I misread your message
Never mind :')

12:01 PM
@M.A.R. use better parser. ;)
@M.A.R. that's awfully twisted logic.

12:15 PM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard well, it's sorta antithetical to the modern life, but it's kinda understandable if you have a very abysmal obsession for being righteous
P.S. after a couple of centuries, these hermits ended up in the spotlight, and all sorts of crooks pretended to be sufis, gaining some following and essentially living off the people they fooled with fake miracles and wisecracking
So if you check our poets in the 4th Hijri century, they're praising sufis for their OCD-like hatred for a normal living, but by the sixth Hijri century, ours poets were instead mocking sufis as hypocrites instead

@M.A.R. example?

And the image of an OG sufi is a starved Mahatma Gandhi except dirtier and with a full beard like Diogenes. The image of a 6th century sufi is a fat merchant

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Thanks...

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard All very evident in Hafez and Saadi's poems. For 'the real' sufis, Sana'ii

@M.A.R. oh that's quite the opposite...

12:24 PM
The sixth century for poets was kinda like this century of ours. There's a cultural undercurrent of praising screw ups for their honesty. Hafez repeatedly says "I'd rather be the staggering drunkard loitering on the street than one of these holy people"

@M.A.R. how you know so much? Religious background or just love to read stuff?

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Right? History has all the lessons if we care to hear them

I hardly know any Jewish past poets. :/
@M.A.R. sadly true.

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard more like I'm attentive in class and remember things I've read or heard five years ago in a boring course everyone was daydreaming in

@M.A.R. oh, nice. I didn't always daydream during boring classes, but remember close to nothing from them anyway.

12:26 PM
I don't think I'm really hardworking. I mean, I read but I'm pretty sure it's not as much as most readers
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard who knows, maybe by that age I'm like you
My parents are religious, but the good kind of religious thankfully.

@M.A.R. good memory isn't hard working, on the contrary, those with bad memory have to work hard to read and memorize, if they want to succeed.

Because they're smart, they don't buy into nonsense. Dad for some reason sometimes loves conspiracy theories though

@M.A.R. glad to hear, sounds like the same "type" as Yaakov and Mith.

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard yeah I guess, I mean, I think I noticed it while preparing for the entrance exam. Or maybe people were just bluffing about how much they read or need to read.

@M.A.R. meh, many smart people fall for conspiracy theories, e.g. my sister. :/

12:28 PM
Policy-wise, they've shifted a lot to the left, especially in the recent years when our government went full nuts

She was all into the 5G COVID theory in the beginning for a while.

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard there's this appeal to the fact that even the craziest theory might connect two unrelated incidents

@M.A.R. people bluff a lot, no doubt. To look better in eyes of others.

There's a right way to discuss such things, and many wrong ways. People often just need to be educated a bit about what to be critical of

@M.A.R. you mean you won't remember what you know now when you're 40? Yeah, that's possible. ;)
@M.A.R. yup
