If any JavaScript/Flash experts wander in here today, I have a nasty bug which has returned and I would love some advice on how to squash it

Q: Why does Flash's ExternalInterface *sometimes* not work?

JoshI have a Flash movie which has a number of actionscript 2 functions which are exposed to Javascript via ExternalInterface. Normally this movie works fine and Javascript can communicate with it. But sometimes, intermittently and without explanation, the flash object in Javascript will not have the...

@TheUnhandledException that's over a year old - is it still giving you problems?

Hey @PiersMyers
Well when I posted that, it was version 1.0 of my software
now I have 2.0 beta, and the bug has returned
I reviewed the changed I made in SVN over a year ago and none of them seem to apply here!
I'm sure I've done something stupid, I just can't tell what

could be a bug in the Flash plugin - can't you rewrite it in HTML5?

Oh, I wish. I wish so much!
We need to support IE7

better than IE6 I suppose :)

v1.0 had to support IE6
I convinced our team to drop IE6 support for v2.0 :-)
It happens intermittently, and more often when I clear my cache or the server side cache, making me think it must be a timing issue

2:20 PM
intermittent bugs are the worst to find

tell me about it! :-/
I'm considering just adding like a 1sec delay and seeing if that clears things up... IDK, seems like a major hack solution to me :-)

well, if it gets it to work till v3.0

yeah really
esp this is already in beta, plus people are chomping at the bit for v3.0 already!
I guess it's good to be wanted :-)

I assume you have no Apple users if you are using Flash then

Yeah, we need to support IE7, IE8, FireFox 3.5, Firefox 3.6, and Safari on Windows or Mac
We chose Flash because we need to display fonts which may not be installed on the website users' computer

2:29 PM
what's wrong with jpeg's? :) There must be other ways of displaying different fonts than Flash

Well, the user has to be able to type interactively in sed fonts :-)
it's for an online stationery / card preview tool, where users can select a card and edit the text, for wedding invitations, stationery, thank you notes, etc

ah, cool like Moonpig.com

oh, competition I have not heard of!
:-)
Like this, but you edit directly on the card
more like cardstore.com (that's not one of our clients tho)
Can't give out my real clients' sites without permission
Really fun project, except for the Flash part ;-)

are you doing this little project on your own and selling to various clients?

Well, not on my own. I'm the CTO of our company. But my company is doing it on our own; it's a SaaS product
We're a software development/hosting/Software as a Service shop
This is our latest product offering, adds in to our eCommerce system

2:46 PM
interesting - is it good business for you?

Yeah, it is. The economic downturn was a bit rough but we weren't alone in that regard -- and in fact, it would have been worse if we didn't offer SaaS. Collecting monthly fees each month helps a lot, as opposed to doing only custom development and when things slow down, it's very tough.
But as things are picking up, we're in very high demand, which is awesome

I really need to build up my web based technology skills so I can do this kind of cool stuff - so many to choose from these days :)

Yeah really. JavaScript, Ruby, PHP, .NET, SOAP, Flash, Flex...
:-)
Hey @Joe
How goes?

It goes... slowly but surely

I know the feeling
You have any experience with JavaScript/Flash ExternalInterface by any chance?

2:53 PM
@JoePhillips as long as it keeps it up till Friday

@TheUnhandledException I don't. sorry
@PiersMyers amen

No problem @JoePhillips :-)
Going to continue my trial-and-error debugging =b
