Q: What updates should be done to older monsters to bring them in line with MM3 era monsters?

Simon WithersI know that to try an better balance paragon and epic level players against similar level monsters, WOtC changed the math used for monsters for MM3, and I believe that they changed some of the types of powers they gave monsters. If I want to update monsters from MM1 or MM2 to be in line with MM...

4chan's RPG discussion can be surprisingly intelligent, it's just sitting in the middle of a lot of 4chan.

2:02 PM
Well and advertising any kind of interactive site anywhere near 4chan would be like waving a red flag in front of a herd of bulls
like waving a bloody seal baby in front of a killer whale
like waving a intern in front of Bill Clinton
like waving a chest of gold in front of a dragon
you get the idea ...

Sometimes they have intelligent chat, most of the time they share stories of parties/groups that I am so glad I am nowhere near.
They occasionally spark interesting discussion of difficult rules though.

Yeah
Lots of rpg places on the web I'm finding

I'm trying to reach out in my web of contacts of game stores and bloggers to see whose willing to advertise us.

cool
remember it doesn't have to be big
I put a link on the facebook wall of my local game store, and that got some hits

I'm trying to get back in touch with my old store in Oklahoma City. They have a physical bulletin board which amusingly still gets a good deal of traffic. I just need them to pin something up on it for me.

See the starred pdf on the side
prints great on a 3x5

3:33 PM
Oh, that should be handy.
I'll have to see about getting a small stack of those printed on business cards to drop off at the local game shops.

yep

Q: Games that have only fictional reward cycles

SevenSidedDieWhat games have no mechanical reward cycle, leaving character rewards and improvements entirely within the fiction? This question is inspired by some of the answers to Which RPGs primarily reward playing the role. Since the question specified games that pinned character advancement largely on ro...

@CRoss I see you've got posts over on gaming about Dwarf Fortress. Is the game growing on you?

8:07 PM
growing on me? I'm jonesing it like a junkie

It amuses me as a game and from a design standpoint.
The sheer utter level of detail is mind boggling.

what specifically?

I remember seeing an excerpt about how his creatures are structured. It's like a class diagram to living creatures.
The later versions now have indicators for what a component of a creature is made of, so with some hacking you can have dwarves made of obsidian.

yes, it is in many ways, a simulation

What really intrigues me is that it is inspiring offshoot games, such as goblin camp.
And lots of tools that mine the data, such as a dwarf fort visualizer. There's even one for graphical rendering of gameplay, but I think it only captures every other frame of data.

8:10 PM
and minecraft to a lesser extent

I got that last night.
Reminds me of what we played with a few years ago, blockland.

Dwarf fortress really appeals deeply to people as programmers, we all want to participate, but Toady (Tarn Adams) is keeping it close to the vest
so of course there are a lot of spinoffs

I'm just waiting for him to start building class structure for atoms.
So dwarves can learn to split the atom and get into nuclear engineering.
Ever see the dwarf turing machine? mkv25.net/dfma/map-8269

Yes of course
@MadMAxJr He's already said he's keeping it strictly medieval
no guns, no explosives, no nukes

It makes me want to stick that mountain into a D&D game as a joke. Dwarves muttering about server uptime.
Party hired to go 'debug' the system by clearing out some critters.

8:16 PM
I really enjoy DF, and I play dwarves in D&D often
so I've been trying out how to mix them ... but it doesn't make sense since the game doesn't have magic yet

Dwarf Priest has stopped casting: Interupted by carp
Admittedly the little bugs of DF have been interesting to observe. Carp and elephants once being the most dangerous creatures ever.

Indeed, and unicorns were also the most dangerous once
mermaids the most valuable, and slaughtered for their bones

Q: Why don't my marksdwarves do any damage?

C. RossI'm trying to augment my melee troops with some ranged troops. However the ranged troops don't seem to be effective at all, even though they're all Skilled or better. For example: 30 wood and bone bolts against a naked goblin resulted in bruises only. 30 wood and bone bolts against an armored...

That's very strange to me now too

Items crafted as the result of a mood are always interesting. The randomized system of creating descriptions comes up with some interesting results.

You might enjoy the gaming blog
We have a DF succession game posted there

There's a blog to go with the stack? Interesting.

8:23 PM
yeah, community initiative ... not sure it makes as much sense for rpg since everyone (but me) already has a blog
what do you think?

Interesting, varied content for video gaming, and I'm already reading the link to the illustrated DF newbie guide.
I only tried DF once about a year and a half ago.

it has vastly improved in my opinion
what do you think about a blog for this site?

Well, a blog will be fine if we can get more traffic coming first.

I tend to think it wouldn't draw more traffic myself

I've got questions I've canceled because I realize they're either too open, or I simply need to re-read the dang book closer rather than just asking here.

8:29 PM
as for the latter, please ask!
the site needs hard/deep questions and easy/shallow ones!

A lot of things about RPGs are open to interpretation, a stack site isn't. It wants to be able to deliver firm answers, not speculation.
Or at least that is my observation.
Well, to be honest I've been wanting to ask questions about Twilight: 2013, but I should really read the book again and skim the rules before I do.

ok
we want to answer questions ... sometimes the answer is subjective (especially about rpgs)

I've been hoping to get some questions tossed up there about less popular systems to spread coverage.

we don't want to discuss, but that doesn't mean everything has to be air tight

I figure more game coverage means more chances of a google hit on that game.

8:31 PM
true, though what does 75%+ of the community play?

Did you ever manage to play a campaign in [delete]

I want to delete this question, I was thinking of the wrong game.

... oooook

Well most people are going to be playing the mainstream games. WOTC game lines, White Wolf lines, Hero system, and a handful of others that have broad coverage.

but the small games crowd is very active and doesn't like to be excluded

This is true. So that's why I'm digging out my old systems to find out what I don't know about them.

8:36 PM
hmmm, we don't have a single star wars question

Might have to dust off my Heavy Gear collection and see if anybody has actually played the RPG side of it.
I played a few games of Saga edition. I heard that got canned.

hmmm, I don't know, my shop is still selling the books

On January 28, 2010, Wizards of the Coast announced on their website that they would not be renewing their license to produce Star Wars products for their roleplaying and miniature gaming lines. Their license ended in May 2010.
That's from the wiki entry.

ah, boo

I'm still miffed they killed d20 Modern

8:39 PM
I'm disappointed, d20 Star Wars - Saga Edition was my favorite system

They had a Modern superheros book on the way to editing when they scrapped the system.

@MadMAxJr Me too! On the other hand I don't need any more books to run what I want

It's got very good coverage for what products are out

I'm planning a future one shot this weekend
I didn't really like Urban Arcana ... it just wasn't smooth

Though any time I put Dark Matters on the table, one of my players goes "Why don't we just dig out the /actual/ Alternity books?"

A: Which roleplaying games feature realistic combat?

C. RossI'm actually going to suggest D20 modern. Obviously it's d20 so it's fairly abstract, but the base system lead to fairly realistic combats (at low level). I suggest it as a good balance between realism and playability. Attacks D20 Roll vs AC. AC is based on dexterity, a class bonus and armor...

Yeah, that line of thought was spurred from reading that earlier today.

We ran a fairly successful d20 Future game in college
> Irish Space Pirates

Used d20 Apocalypse then found Darwins World which had a really nicely fleshed out setting.
Then Darwin hit 2nd ed and went OGL so we could just use those books on their own.
It has a nice map on the inside cover of how the post-apoc survivors view the territories of the US.

cool, well I'm going home
just killing time here

Have a nice afternoon.

Q: Is it appropriate to ask questions you are pretty sure you know the answer to?

Pat LudwigBackground - my D&D group meets weekly, we have a pretty good group of rules lawyers, but there are plenty of times when we have questions/disagreements. Each week we keep a list of questions generated by that session (0-3 a week) and figure out the real answers after the game. I was thinki...

Q: Does D&D 4e have rules for necromancy or conjuration summoning?

C. RossNecromancy and Conjuration (summoning and binding) were topics that were fairly thoroughly addressed in previous editions of D&D, and these topics certainly pop up often in fantasy literature. I don't see these in the D&D 4e books anywhere, are they addressed at all in this edition? Are...

Q: How does cover and concealment work with Melee Attacks?

Pat LudwigThe subject really says it all. An encounter with a Lamia and her melee reach 5 shows that I don't understand how melee reach interacts with cover.

Q: Does a character have to successfully hide from all opponents to be hidden?

Pat LudwigSpecific example - If a rogue successfully hides from one opponent can he then sneak attack that opponent? Or can the opponents allies use a free action to yell out, "Hey, the annoying guy with the crossbow is just around the corner, keep an eye out for him!" Thus denying the rogue combat advant...
