@TheAmplitwist Just tested the differences between the preview and final output when adding dollars in a tooltip (for MathJax) here: math.meta.stackexchange.com/a/34888. Hmm, would escaping the dollar signs help, I wonder...? Would be a miracle if it did... But there's no real need for MathJax in tooltips anyway, so this is a non-issue.
