After a major trolling wave few years ago, SE changed it so that users with less than 20 rep (or maybe only with 1 rep? Not sure) have their name and avatar blank in chat.

Someone used highly offensive name and avatar and trolled chat rooms by just joining.

I think that at some point, before this change took place, balpha manually changed the troll's avatar to the pride flag, to troll them back.
