So... my first question is how the books ended? Would like to know where the split started between TV show and books, i.e. where it began to be 100% the TV show writers doing, not the books author.

IMO that's where the TV show started to suck badly, since they're just bad writers.

Finished watching the 5th season yesterday, with Cersei's Walk of Shame... was it also in the books? That's one of the most "influencing" events in the show, and one of the most extreme with nudity, as it lasted long minutes unlike most other scenes where you only see a bare butt for few seconds. Kudos for the actress for allowing such a long scene... ;)

IIRC the books and the show start diverging as soon as Book 2 (Season 2) but it's only minor details then

I can tell you a lot about what I know is different in the books later on, but I haven't actually given the show a serious try so I will even miss some stuff!

Thinking about it, I actually like how balances it out

Descriptions of gore are detailed enough to be unique, but he doesn't go too crazy on the details so you only feel like puking once or twice in the entirety of five books

Same goes for the sex scenes. He's smart and he wants us to know it's not fan service and he's not writing an erotica

By Season 5, enough has diverged to be able to affect the main-ish arcs

You're probably more immersed in this than I am, and so I'm ill-equipped to challenge you on it, but I have this feeling that the ending and the general plot the writers came up with was probably Martin intends/intended to do but they got hasty and meta problems and strict budget botched it up

And the shows have done a few things better than the books

But that should be a given in a good adaptation

@M.A.R. in the first five seasons, for sure. Some chapters left me with tingling feeling for long minutes after they ended, e.g. when Dany first flew on the back of a dragon. Or after the Red Wedding. It delivered the message in a thrilling way.

@M.A.R. not really, to be honest. I read only the first book but... Eh... Forgot most of it. Watching the TV show kind of wiped it. That's why I'm so keen to learn the differences, and too lazy to re-read the first book.

@M.A.R. well same in TV show, it's on the safer side of the line. Lots of bare butts (strange enough, pretty equal between both genders), only few frontal nudity. And no explicit sex scenes at all.

Same for gore, quite a few flying heads, but not many blood splatters.

Anyway, how are you, in general? People still buy from the pharmacy?

Here many shops, including pharmacies, offer a "take away" option these days.
