@Mithoron Kim always wants to believe Saul has a good side if you give him a chance, and she was sorta a grand-gesture person too; you know, building a better future and making the world a better place and stuff. She also believes herself to be a 'commoner', so if she sees a rich guy fight a poor guy, even if the rich guy is right, she believes she should be helping the underdog. However, she also wanted to rise the corporate ladder, so
When she actually 'makes' it, becomes a lawyer for Mesa Verde, sees a bright future for herself and the road to success paved and ready, she starts to feel empty, and she starts to lose respect for Howard. Now Howard, he's the sorta guy who doesn't have to climb uphill like Jim, dresses well, smiles at the camera and steals the day. She starts seeing him as her nemesis.
So sympathy (and love) for Jim, combined with an underdog fetish, if you will, and losing hope in the morality of law (she tries the pro bono thing, partly to cling on to hope that lawyers don't go to hell, but it mostly isn't working out and she knows it) amd throw in a couple of traumas, like Chuck's death, you're good to go.
@Mithoron now that I think about it, yeah you're probably right.
