Something that I did see during the fallout was a small attempt (by one mod) at measuring these behaviours in the form of a "pronoun checker tool". Up until this incident, many of the changes followed a process of (1) Here's this new measuring tool we built, and (2) based on the results of that tool we plan to do X. Since the fallout, I have seen two major changes go through with no measure or process at all. This is what worries me about the outcomes of secret chatrooms and staff power.

@ReinstateMonica-ζ-- Apparently no formal retraction, but the article has been updated.

A: Why haven't the statements to the Register been retracted?

JakeGouldThe statements might not have been retracted from the initial articles, but The Register has posted a new article that addresses — in my humble opinion — pretty much all of the issues raised here. This new article — dated January 2, 2020 — was posted on The Register, “Stack Overflow makes peace ...

I have to say, that with the dawn of AI, the idea that people get very up in arms to the point of declaring a fight over "he/she" it's... well. Rather human as arguments go.
I'm not a moderator so I guess my opinion does not matter much.
But it's my opinion.
"they" is fine.
It's only going to get harder as time goes on, so my remarks above are pertinent. You can't solve a system like this with a centralized approach because people are different. Everyone has rights.
I will cite the classic statement "your right to swing your arm ends where my nose begins"
This is just one of many moments that instruct us about the dangers of central authority. I actually like SE a lot, Joel used to work for Microsoft, and when he took a hand in it the whole thing had a more personal feel...so I think a lot of people are mad that it's getting lawyerish.
And Joel put up a rainbow flag on the day they had the gay marriage bill, because it was a personally vindicating moment, and it's his site, so... that's his right. But that also caused a bit of a tizzy.
But I will restate what I've already said. Every one of you asking for more accountability from central control, in an era where distributed cryptography exists, are barking up the wrong tree. You're smart enough to build the system you need. You whine and complain and let other people set up domains or Zuerburgfields and the fact of the matter is you just need to look in the mirror for who the real villain (slacker?) is.
Central control isn't going to be accountable, and 1700 downvotes isn't going to get it, so now what.

I call Donald Trump Donald Trump. I don't call him Mr. President, and I do not have to.
It seems whatever forces thought they could strong-arm Monica are still present, and still think they can strong arm the rest of us, but don't turn your friends against you. It's not healthy.

Transgender and non-binary-gender individuals can be helped to feel more welcomed without driving out other individuals who believe gender identity is not a fundamental existential property. This is (part of) the entire issue here. If I understand correctly, SO said: "We want parties X, Y and Z to be respected. Like this." MC asked: "Yes, I see. But doesn't always work and not always necessary. Can I respect X, Y, Z like this, instead?" SO: "You're banned." Everyone: "SO failed at due process."
^-- bears repeating
