12:00 AM
Stack Overflow careers just e-mailed me about another position opening in New York.
Why is it that as soon as I actually get a job everyone suddenly wants to hire me, but back when I was actually looking no one gave me a second glance?
Google, Stack Overflow, Thoughtworks, etc
Everyone started wanting me while I was moving to TORONTO
For the record, this was my reply:
Sorry dawg, you missed the boat. I just got a new job in the beautifully terrifying city of Toronto. Since I am actually enjoying my new responsibilities and perks I'm not particularly interested in looking elsewhere at the moment.

I am, however, interested in giving you one extra e-mail to brighten your otherwise dreary inbox. Behold! A happy alligator: ~~m"=
He doesn't want to bite you because he is too happy. Look how happy he is. ~~m"<

He left.

HELLO PEKKA

Hi Welbog.

HOW ARE YOU? I just realized that ANYONE can set up events!
What a wonderfully dumb idea.

Fine thanks. Events? What events? (Been a while since I've last been on the chat)
And yourself? How's Toronto?
(Off to find out about events)
Hi Random

Toronto is FULL OF PEOPLE oh my God

Yeah, I imagine! I actually looked it up after reading your blog post. Looks like a nice place.
This Chat thing is way over my head now. It has events? Don't tell me you can poke people now or something.

12:14 AM
You read my blog? Which post do you like the least?

@Toronto I'm not a frequent reader, I kind of happened upon it some time ago. I did like the Toronto post... And there was one earlier one about SO that I remember I didn't entirely agree with but was very nicely written.

Jeff, please stop spamming my channel.

B I E B E R
admit it, sometimes you lose yourself in his eyes

Pekka, I am incredibly insightful.
I admit it. He is dreamy.
More lustrous than the sparkliest of vampires.
I'm sorry, Jeff, but your bloodsucking wiles no longer have any hold over me.
My heart belongs to Justin now and forever.

12:19 AM
bieber.stackexchange.com -- WHO'S WITH ME?!!?11?!!@1

Jeff, while you're here, I have a bug to file about Chat.

"too awesome"? DUPE.

You can't have events whose length in minutes is 99999999999999. The server errors out when you try.
I had to settle for a ten-year-long event instead.
Which one of you guys came up with events, anyway?
You should run ideas by me first so that I can tell you how dumb they are.

mostly it's a function of realizing that chat is basically "right people in the right place at the right time"

12:21 AM
I mean seriously, what were you thinking?

there has to be some kind of scheduling system

Does it have to be so broken?

I can beiber you while you're sleeping, but sometimes I want to bieber you right all up in your face

Where is this events system that you speak of?
@Jeff that is just gross.
But seriously, there is no Bieber Stack Exchange yet?

I have six events defined but none of them are showing up in the main page.
Jeff, did you get my e-mail about the alligator?
It was a very happy alligator.

12:31 AM
It doesn't look like he's got anything to say about the Alligator... Too bad. Anyway, I'm off. 'night everyone!

@Pekka Shocking. A clear indication that SE is utterly failing to reach the tween girl demographic.

1 hour later…
1:46 AM
sorry, I was entranced by Justin Beiber's dreamy liquid brown eyes

He's mine, you tramp.

I dunno why your events aren't showing up, I'll have Ben and Marc take a look

Sounds like your poorly thought-out feature's implementation is poorly thought-out.

yeah, event scheduling is pretty minimalistic right now

Pretty easy to abuse and break.

1:51 AM
Also lacks Outlook integration. This'll never fly in The Enterprise!

The quantum shear is tearing the ship apart. We have to come out of warp immediately and polarize the deflector grid before the dilithium matrix is compromised!

hey, so we will have two new badges
Sportsmanship and Rock the Vote

Dammit, Toronto, I'm a lurker not a miracle worker

Rock the Vote = cast max of 30 votes in one day

And if I down-vote people who annoy me, I get Sportsmanship?

1:53 AM
I cast that many downvotes on Meta on a regular basis.

Sportsmanship = 100 upvotes to competing answers on questions you have already answered with at least 1 upvote

Oh. Good Sportsmanship.
So does it still count if I deleted my answer?

I have done that kind of upvoting in the past. I doubt I've done it 100 times.

Rock the Vote, is that an OK name? It's a little whimsical but it was hard to come up with a good name

I immediately thought of MTV, which made me not think of music, which isn't related to voting or SO... So, i guess there's some confusion avoided...

1:56 AM
I just think of map voting in FPS games.

I'd have gone with something more direct... "Ballot Stuffer" perhaps.

not bad

Bad connotations, perhaps
thought not as bad as MTV

Just call it suffrage.

I like that

1:58 AM
MAXIMUM SUFFRAGE
3

it makes me think of suffering. But doesn't actually mean that at all.

Sounds like a band name.

Suffrage, political franchise, or simply the franchise is the civil right to vote, or the exercise of that right. In English, suffrage and its synonyms are sometimes also used to mean the right to run for office (to be a candidate), but there are no established qualifying terms to distinguish between these different meanings of the term(s). The right to run for office is sometimes called (candidate) eligibility, and the combination of both rights is sometimes called full suffrage. In many other languages, the right to vote is called the active right to vote and the right to be voted for (to...
it's a good name, but a teeny bit obscure

Now opening for Justin Bieber: Maximum Suffrage

it also contains the word "rage"

1:59 AM
Heavy metal band

I think I'll call my rock band 3 band that name.. WELBOG WINS AGAIN

I gotta say, I loved that idea when I first heard it, but now it's growing on me
In all seriousness, "Rock the Vote" makes me think you're gonna reward encouraging others to vote (and then, perhaps, forgetting to vote yourself)

How is suffrage obscure?
Don't you people learn about women's suffrage in school?

"Ballot stuffer" makes me think you're rewarding a specific form of sockpuppeting
"Suffrage" is the only one that actually means what it rewards

yeah I think we will use suffage. good idea @Toronto
plus, I got an excellent Rock Band 3 band name out of it.. bonus

2:03 AM
I eat pages of the thesaurus instead of toast in the morning.

I'll bet the butter makes the ink all smudged.
eh, Jeff - a valid use for [status-by-design]:

Q: Not correctly closing the tag renders "correctly" in the preview zone but not in the actual text

zneakIf you open the tag and forget to close it in a question's text, it will render text as subscript in the preview zone, but not on the actual question's page. For instance, this text renders as subscript from the preview zone.

I take back all those mean things I said about welboug
plus, he is a Canadian Sophisticate now

FYI: I am Sid Meier now.

I've always thought it was funny seeing what people used to wear. Like men wearing wigs.

2:14 AM
why is that funny? Canadian sophisticates dress that way now.

@JeffAtwood: Really?

Jeff really like hit-and-run messaging.
I think that's why he loves Twitter and hates IRC.
(Other than the fact that he is dumb)
wwwwwww

Also don't do a google image search for 'Canadian sophisticates'.

Noted.

8 hours later…
10:05 AM
There are no results for "Canadian sophisticates" in quotes. It could be that @Dexter's image will become the first one to make it

6 hours later…
4:13 PM
By the way, what line of work are you in @Welbog?

6 hours later…
10:02 PM
What line of work do you think I am in? You said you read my blog!
YOU LIED TO ME

10:12 PM
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Behold your suffrage!

Have you ever wondered why the vote buttons and score are so prominent on every Stack Exchange question?

Putting voting front and center is very much intentional; it is how …

It’s only through voting that a class of editors, closers, and moderators can emerge to help run and govern the site. Voting is how site leadership forms. That’s why the reputation leagues show a breakdown of reputation spectrums.

Does your site have a healthy middle class of users with vote up and down, and edit tag privileges? Does it have a healthy governing class of users with edit, close, and moderation privileges? All of this requires sufficient reputation, which in turn requires users to exercise their right to vote. …

I prefer ninja matryoshkas myself
guess which ninja is deadliest? THE TINIEST ONE OF COURSE

I think my bot statistically hates you, Jeff.
<KevBot> Jeff Atwood joke in bad bike accidents, rock climbing accidents (I fell), been attacked by a 5 year old now
