I'm not sure to understand your last message well with all that noise

A lot of people, yourself included, don't understand why it's insufficient to think "he/she/they has worked for most people for so long". And you said you can't please everyone. I said that SE the company might just decide that they choose not to please those people who think that "he/she/they has worked for most people for so long"
i.e. not support this way of thinking

My point isn't about things working for so long. I'm all for adding inclusiveness. But a step-by-step method is just better than going directly with forceps
aiming for complete acceptance of all possible micro identities

There's no step-by-step. You either acknowledge people's identities, with all the possible diversity, or you don't
no matter what boxes you account for, there will always be someone down the road who doesn't fit

your last sentence is exactly why trying is a deadly sin

But "be nice to people and use their pronouns if asked" is exactly not having boxes. "Use he/she/they" is boxing.
The only inclusive choice is "respect what people ask for". The addendum that usually isn't added is "to a reasonable extent", but using a person's pronouns should always fall within that.
it's a very small thing to do, and it matters a lot to those who face pushback every day of their lives

8:14 PM
I could imagine tomorrow inventing a pronoun for people that like star wars. It may get very popular, and used very fervently. It may become more meaningful in numbers and identity, than being of a particular sex. Do you see where I'm heading at ?

Yes, and this is why good faith must be assumed. Inventing a star wars pronoun is not in good faith.

you can do that completely outside SO
and of pure good faith

I doubt it
people don't identify as being star warses
this is just a variant of the "apache attack helicopter" jab

no, because it can be a genuine part of your identity
it's constructed, like the 3rd genres are, the only difference is "the dna" which nobody cares about on the internet

if you think that being transgender and being a star wars fan carry the same weight then you're in for some uncomfortable surprises on SE in the future

8:19 PM
transgender themselves can agree there are more important things about themselves than the sex they belong (or not) to
if you think "call me the way i want" don't open the door to this kinds of gimmicks, you are up for unpleasant surprise on the internet
and i dont call that trolling - because it can completely not be

Transgender people, and it's not sex, it's gender I think. It's complicated. But in the world we live in most trans/non-binary people aren't given the dignity of being accepted as they are. They fight bigotry and ignorance each day, trying to prove that they exist. If it takes actual effort (and a lot of it) to maintain your identity in a sea of rejection, these things start to matter. To you it's "yeah, they used the wrong pronoun for me, whatever". But in their shoes this is a huge deal.
Sure, they can shrug it off, but having to shrug it off all the time, every day, will become exhausting. And it's not a lot to ask from us to acknowledge their existence, without any kind of hand-waving about old times and the difficulty of doing it right.

sorry, non-native speaker (for the sex mistake)

same

I'm weighting your arguments, but to be honnest I'm also thinking that, as soon as the pronouns will be widespread, they will immediately get a negative connotation and be used for bullying. I'm not really sure what transgender people want, but gender neutrality is likely a more favorable ground than something that magnify their visibility.
That being said, it sure doesn't get in the way of trying to use what people want to be called with, it's their choice after all. Wait and see
I see no good to come out of it though.

we will indeed see
