@Kevin All interaction comes with risk, and sharing personal information even more so. It is regrettable that some people have greater risk for negative interaction than others merely for sharing a truth about their person. I wish this wasn't true. However, leaving SE to imitate real life, where personal offense from only words is not usually grounds to excise punishment on the offender, is probably the best course. Trans people's beliefs are not the only thing that can and does yield negative responses. The belief that trans beliefs are wrong is also likely to bring negative response. — fredsbend 12 mins ago

For me, I cannot favor extra measures to prevent the offense of one group, when risk of offense is a prerequisite to idea sharing and the rest of us with unpopular ideas manage to get by. This, of course, is not justification of malicious words whose intent is only to hurt. That is outside respectable discourse, and is rightly rejected and censored. — fredsbend 11 mins ago

And on this topic specifically, I've seen much more respectfully delivered but unpopular beliefs censored than actual hateful messages in total. In case your wondering, the popular belief today favors trans belief. So even with the obvious popular position, such measures would have us snuff out opposing ideas? This is a problem, both in practice and fairness theory. — fredsbend 5 mins ago

Sorry, @Kevin I probably should have posted here in the first place.

I bet you're no fan of Jordan Peterson, and I'm not really either, but his response here is quite perfect:

> Reporter: Why should your right to freedom of speech trump a trans person's right not to be offended?

> Peterson: Because in order to be able to think you have to risk being offensive.... You're certainly willing to risk offending me in pursuit of truth. Why should you have the right to do that? It's been rather uncomfortable.

If I can't risk offending you, then we cannot engage at all.
