@cubick that's exactly how it works. You can think of it as a huge dictionary where the keys are the strings in English and the values are the translations. When it sees "Welcome to Stack Overflow" it does a lookup using that as a key, it finds the translation and it uses that. If a dev changes it to "Welcome to Stack Overflow!" it does a lookup with that key, finds nothing and then uses "Welcome to Stack Overflow!". That looks like a lost translation, but in reality it's just a new string
