Heya @SonictheAnonymousHedgehog!

What did you want to talk about?

So, I really like your idea when it comes to having a survey for folks that seem lost

But having this totally user driven feels a bit off, because even though you make a disclaimer, it looks like it's coming from us.

Should I change the wording of the canned comment?

4:40 PM
But I think we can fix that by just collaborating and creating an overall engagement survey.

(Another disclaimer: I'm on the autism spectrum, and am a very literal person. Just wanted to get that out of the way really quickly.)
So you mean making a similar one, but official?

Well, I don't think you can really fix it with language. We ask that you don't link to that particular survey any longer, but we feel like it would be neat if we came up with a more official one folks could use.

Okay, I'll remove the canned comment text from my answer, and stop linking it in my own comments. Would you like me to turn off responses there?

Getting to know why folks don't engage so well with meta is something I've been meaning to do for a while, but a deeper picture in general. And when you came up with asking about that piece of it, I was just thinking well, now's a good time to just come up with that whole thing and get behind it officially instead.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog If you wouldn't mind, yes, but I'm going to write a meta post about what we could be collecting from meta participants in general, and get a more formal thing in place

Then we can prompt people in comments, and probably work links to it in the UI for 30 - 45 days.
So you had a really good idea, and I think continuing it is a great idea, but let's do it together and more official-like

Why don't you get to work writing the discussion post, and I'll remove the survey link from my answer and turn off responses there?

Sounds good. I'll have the post out later today or tomorrow morning, I'll ping you in the tavern when I do

@TimPost I think you should link to this chat room, so it can be used for discussion about this

4:50 PM
So off-topic posts will be part of this (e.g. how the heck did you manage to get here?!) but the survey in all will ask about general engagement (what could be better, did you have an opinion of meta prior to posting, did that opinion change, do you want those 15 minutes of your life back, etc)

I can post the original four choices I had in the survey here if you want

Part of what worries me is that we sometimes seem to lose more really interested users that find value in meta than we actually gain.

Here are the five choices of the original survey:
> I don't know why my question ended up on Meta; I meant to post on a different site
> I am blocked from posting questions on the correct site (e.g. "we're no longer accepting questions from this account")
> I posted my question on the right site, but it was put on hold, closed, or deleted
> I couldn't find the right site for my question, so I posted it on Meta so others could help me find the right place
> Other: [text field here]
@TimPost What do you think, in general, of these choices?

5:06 PM
Good coverage. We can tell some of them by a simple query when the question is closed and record the data (we did this as an experiment on SO just a few months ago)
I've got a few meetings and then I need to run out, but I'll have the post up tomorrow afternoon at some point (NY time)
thanks again!!!! :)

@TimPost You're very welcome :)
