Q: Building Stronger Communities — Changes to the Area 51 Process v3.0

Robert CartainoFor anyone who follows this site, you may have noticed that Area 51 has been churning out progressively weaker site proposals and more anemic site launches, about a third of which fail in private beta. There is nothing inherently wrong with most of these subjects; it's just that we've largely ...

Hello! I have a small question: what software do you use to automatically fix common spelling errors in posts? Afaik, the Chrome built-in spell check requires one to fix each spelling error one-by-one, and it also gives false-positives like PHP/CoffeeScript. Moreover, it isn't always sensible to look for spelling errors inside MathJax or code blocks. I found this, but has there been a better userscript? Like, one that wouldn't touch codeblocks/mathjax?

hmm
I mucked arounf with writeley for a bit but I think most of those things are not code aware

@JourneymanGeek this? techcrunch.com/2005/08/31/… seems to be pretty old :/

7:50 AM
heh I think its still updated

8:29 AM
There's a userscript @GaurangTandon
Takes a lot of common errors and doesn't change code and quotes (probably not jax either, not sure as I haven't tried)

8:56 AM
@PrincessLuna i think that's the same userscript as what I pointed out earlier :P but, that repo of userscripts seems quite useful, so I'll check that out :)

It's slightly different from it though. More features and stuff

9:13 AM
._.
the answer is literally to type yes.

@PrincessLuna oh, I didn't notice, you're right. Installing!

@JourneymanGeek based on that other screenshot it look like they didn't install perl

Also possible

@Shadow I believe I am quite good in smelling something as well:
It is also not within the policies to undercut possible question bans in the SE network. As this looks suspicious I'd love to see the site moderators having a deeper look at this. I just wasn't sure enough myself to flag for such intervention. — πάντα ῥεῖ 2 mins ago

Sent a mod flag: This user is probably the same as german.stackexchange.com/users/31811/hussien-chahin and avoiding question block. The last question from the original user (as of current writing) was 20 hours ago, and this user started asking questions since 18 hours ago. Also, this user was created after the suspected question ban came. Could it be investigated?

@HTTPS I refrained sending a mod flag so far. But as that OP announced to flag my comments for violating the be nice policy, I probably don't even need to do so :-)

Hmm... after thinking a little more about the recent "anonymous vs biased action", it might be true after all... using Japanese looking user name on Japanese.SE might give advantage if not unsupervised. Learners/beginners could believe anything what they say even if it's wrong until other experts point it. This might be amplified on smaller sites.
... me using Japanese name on Anime.SE could be deceiving... hmm...
^ when answering question requiring Japanese knowledge

6:39 PM
@HTTPS Well, after deciding to do so at least, the mod flag was marked helpful and a number of comments were removed. I believe the mods at this site are slacking a bit, but who am I to really judge their decisions , or what they came up with research. Anyways that was quite obvious for me.

user315433
People have all kinds of implicit biases and all kinds of irrational reactions to things.

user315433
I suppose SO isn't going to organize mandatory implicit bias training for all its users.

Not to mention that there are only 3 mods active at that site.

user315433
Some askers may perceive editing their questions as hostile. And this perception may well be common among under-represented groups.

> I wish @StackOverflow moderators stopped editing questions. A question belongs to the person who asked it. @πάνταῥεῖ my mod flag also got marked 'helpful'. No visible action, but maybe the user got a mod message.

user315433
Looks like removing "edit" button along with downvotes would make the site more inclusive.

@bro like, "This username smells like jQuery lover! Insta-upvote!"

@HTTPS "but maybe the user got a mod message." Could well be. @HTTPS

Why is a bare link to idownvotedbecau.se accepted as the only content of a comment? I know it's Will's site, and one-flag deleteable, but...

@hichris123 why won't it be accepted?? Was it blacklisted at some point?
I mean, we can flag it, but no need for auto block IMO.
Personally I really dislike this site and the idea to throw it on users, but still...
It's like saying "you suck, go [here, here, and here] to see why"

@ShadowWizard It is accepted, that's the question here
It's not blacklisted
lmgtfy is though

I don't think it should be... it's bad but not THAT bad.

@hichris123 and it's accepted because the combined length of the URL > 10, which makes it a valid message. They're not gonna block link-only comments because, well, they're comments.

7:49 PM
Maybe worth raising meta discussion on MSO about it.
Since SE team officially nuked "What Stack Overflow Is Not" project, there's a chance they will blacklist this one as well... who knows.

I guess what hichris means is the bare link idownvotedbecau.se, not the more precise link with reasons like idownvotedbecau.se/beingunresponsive?
In that case, it's almost the same as "I downvoted you because I'm lazy to explain it"

@HTTPS need AI to detect those things
Train it what links are "bare", and what links are valid.. will take 6-8 thousands years or so. :D

(and I couldn't sleep.)

@HTTPS I was referring to both, but the former especially. I just did a quick SEDE search, and there are 2562! comments with that link. Most of which have the link and nothing else.

@HTTPS still got that nasty cold? :(
Tea is better in that case...

7:56 PM
@ShadowWizard already healed :) but couldn't sleep as usual...

oh
But... coffee cause one to stay awake... usually.
To be honest, I can't understand how one actually falls asleep... one moment I'm still awake, then after a second I'm not. Looks like magic to me. ;)

And another moment, half awake in lucid dream :O

This takes a while, I think, but yeah.... sometimes I remember my dreams. :)
(usually the bad ones, but not only...)

Like compare:
Welcome to StackOverflow! A question is more likely to be received positively if you show what you've tried already. As it stands right now you're mostly asking for the community to do work for you. Best of luck solving your problem. Also the picture you've linked needs a description, and it doesn't appear to link to an animation of any sort. — 0112 Apr 12 at 4:31
with
The first one is much more actionable -- the second one is a variation of "I downvoted, click to see why!"

8:05 PM
Read also: April Wensel's link on the star wall

Yeah, that's actually what encouraged me to look for comments like that.

@hichris123 Also, occasionally I may want to link to that site without casting a downvote, but because of the domain name I'm bound to cast a downvote even though I give the link a friendly title (because of its contents).

Well, we can create a new site with the same system without that domain name...

@SonicWizard Yeah, I think stuff like that should be incorporated into the help center or something -- maybe open up the help center to community contributions.

^ or that, or a canonical meta for reasons to downvote

8:10 PM
Yep, and I'd maybe even suggest moving away from "this is why I downvoted" to "this is how you can improve your post if <X>" type things.

Is the new feature to ask a question about one's own post on a per-site meta even without 5+ rep enabled on Stack Overflow? It was rolled out to all sites except Stack Overflow a while back, but was it ever later enabled on Stack Overflow?

The control group should have been the users who wanted to receive help but were given a sugar pill instead.
