Q: Great ID-Ten-T Errors

NarcolapserWorking at a help desk for a school I've gotten to see some rather classic Tech Support problems: Prof: The projector isn't working. My self: Is the computer turned on? Prof: Hey! It works now. Thanks Or Student: My laptop doesn't have any wireless, fix it! My self: See t...

Q: Why dont Macs have hard drive activity lights?

Connor WAfter seeing this question, it made me wonder; Why dont Macs have hard drive activity lights? It seems there is no actual meaningful use for them nowadays, so is that why Apple decided not to include them on Macs? If so, why do PC manufacturers still insist on putting them on every single compu...

you truly are a Devil @TomWij

Hmm... 44 new responses on NPR, yikes... :-D

NPH ?

Typo.

eh. lol

YOUR ALL BINNED Thank you. That is all.

Hmm?

6:17 PM
lists, lists and more lists on NPR

6:29 PM
Yeah, but the useful questions/answers that are less like a list seem to be good.

there are some good questions as I mentioned yesterday, no doubt.
oh the joy.

Q: The best wallpaper you ever had.

iJeevesMany people like me care much about wallpapers. It would be interesting to share the best wallpaper you ever had.

@Diago for you.

Just when I though today would not be worse for SU. Seriously. Any idea how badly I have to hold back not to make some very nasty comment.

take a deep breath @Diago

Nevermind
I commented

Hmm, maybe a definition on 'computer hardware' and 'computer software' in the FAQ would fit well...
And maybe add a reference to the relevant part of the FAQ as a warning when posing a question.

6:40 PM
@TomWij Feel free to go ahead and comment to that effect. I have had my full of referring people to the FAQ. They either go and read it and come up with a good argument on Meta, or they get over it and move on. If they have fragile ego's, they shouldn't be on the Trilogy.

I'll post an idea for it at the meta and see if I can come up with a nice text before people downvote or negatively comment the idea.

@TomWij It's been suggested before, and the offtopic close already points to the FAQ
In fact the last few FAQ updates was suggested on Meta, one of them by me I think.

@TomWij as @Diago said, nowadays I just hit close. if I'm in a good mood I'll add the relevant lines. SOme people will argue in comments or in meta, few will accept

@TomWij SU is past the let's be nice to everyone and not chase people away stage. It's got bigger problems to deal with, and is also the most moderated site in the Trilogy. It's outgrown SF in a year, and in that time some of us have learned when too much is... Well.. Just too much. Always make sure you search Meta, both of them, before making a suggestion. You'll be surprised to find how many things have already been discussed.

How many subjective/list/fun/... questions are closed on a week?

6:47 PM
@TomWij Lately, very few. I think we closed about 3 a month. When it first started, 3 a day.
It took some time to get it to a point where we knew what we wanted, but now that we do, the community and moderators are on top of things quickly. It's the net effect of letting the ewoks loose.

Yeah, indeed, that amount is small and negligible so it's not really an issue...

@TomWij @random and I are pretty much on top of cleaning things up. A lot of the lists aren't there anymore because we've deleted them
At least once a week we run through a particular tag or set of questions and just silently wipe them out.

Know how that feels... I'm wanting to get rid of questions (where possible) that have only one tag, so every now and then I retag a portion of questions to have two tags or more (and where the tag still fit the rules).

Some of us has been doing this for a long time :) Even @Sathya had a few run-ins with me in the beginning, but he has since learnt :)

6:54 PM
@TomWij Yeah. It happens. Drive by's especially. Or those that can't adjust to how SU works compared to a forum.

I need to actually take time and sit with Jeff about banned tags on SU.

It's quite a lot questions that only have one tag but I think it is a good idea that I fill them up with two or more tags so that the tags get filled, they are easier to search, etc...
On the way I improve the titles, formatting, spelling and even tend to find things that could be closed/deleted or for which duplicates exist so it's not a complete loss of effort.

That's why it's called community moderation :)

:)

7:07 PM
@Diago yup.

Edited the original, thank you...

@random Your opinion. Was I brilliant, rude or simply on a roll tonight?

A: Why do they allow bogus answers/replies to questions?

DiagoWait. Hang on. Your complaining about an answer to a question that was, gasp, closed as not a real question? Seriously.... I think you need to take some time away from your keyboard. However, that's what close and delete votes, flagging and moderators are there for. There is more then 900,000 qu...

I need the post id to know where I am as oData doesn't reflect it live. :-(

@random Actually based on votes I sucked :(

7:15 PM
@Diago naw that about seems like a fitting answer

@Sathya I thought so to. Except if your not the first one posting a witty answer, well.....
@Sathya Although I have had a brilliant teacher:

A: imgur, copyrighted images from the web, and imgur accounts

Jeff AtwoodI thought this was already discussed in the comments to the blog post announcing the feature: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/08/new-image-upload-support/ But I guess not. Anyway.. we have a special privileged account through which all images are uploaded, so images will stay around indefi...

@Diago that being ?

@Sathya User Number 1 Himself.

@Diago ah yes, of course.

7:46 PM
you needed me @TomWij?

No, sorry if I interrupted you... Just wanted you back here as you are absent the last days.
Let's say I kinda missed you... :-)

absent? on chat you mean
since I've been online every day
and now I'm back to SC2

Absent in this channel... Have fun!
Should buy that game too one of these days but I'm wondering if I will like it as much as I like Quake Live.
Played Age Of Empires/Mythology in the past, never played SC...

well with SC2 we can tag team

Might be a good idea, maybe I should go shopping for the game on a less rainy day.

8:01 PM
you can buy it through battle.net :P

Does that cost less? Also, I feel wrong about buying products online, I want something physical which I can hold (and show)... xD

8:13 PM
Meh... The downside of inserting questions in the NPR site: 80 responses. xD

8:26 PM
the disadvantage of having internet radio play in a browser tab amongst gazzillion others... if you want to skip.. finding that tab is argh >_>
dude wtf 15 questions o_o @TomWij

@Sathya: If you do that a lot, you might like humanized.com/enso/launcher
It's like Launchy but it works better... Your thing could be done like "go radio" and it would find the tab containing radio in the title.
@Sathya: Yes, and I'm not done for today... ^^

@TomWij nice, will check it out.

As Super User would probably not need a moderator for now I'm trying to become a moderator at NPR...
Wow, someone downvoted my nomination... :O

Q: Who should the moderators be?

TobiasopdenbrouwIn about two weeks, this community will receive some provisional moderators to help get this site started prior to the elections at the end of the beta. Please read this: Moderators Pro Tempore. Please suggest some members of this community you feel would make excellent moderators (self nominat...

Correction. I had 5 down-votes. Down-vote stats never migrated from MSO.

you can filter out :"For those that saw my SU profile, I want to become a moderator there but it doesn't really need a new one for now... So instead I think it's better to become a moderator at Not Programming Related because this site is in need of one"
@Diago ah. dang.

8:33 PM
@Sathya: Hmm, will do.

@TomWij that line says "I want to be mod because I couldn't be mod at place X and I will keep hopping till I become a mod".
just my $0.02

I'd vote, but I don't want to create an account there.

Yeah, looks more bad than I wanted it to be, it's indeed too personal for a nomination.

@TomWij Honestly being a mod is not as interesting as it sounds.

Q: The best wallpaper you ever had.

iJeevesMany people like me care much about wallpapers. It would be interesting to share the best wallpaper you ever had.

Check out iJeeves' comment

@Diago: Yeah, but I like being helpful to others and to improve the site.
@Sathya: Thanks, that's really a stupid reason to downvote. :S

@TomWij the world's a funny stupid place

@TomWij Believe it or not. You can do more as a normal 10K mod then as a moderator, we don't get to help, in fact, we hardly have time to answer questions.

@Diago: Thanks for warning me...
As it's only a public beta by now and the time it will go public it's not going to be too busy in the start, I'm not going to worry about the inability to answer questions as I will have time till then. If after that period this lack of time is introduced and tends to work against me I could stop doing it...
But that's far from now. :-)

@Sathya I commented. Seriously? Honestly?

8:47 PM
@Diago Aw.

And then he goes and accept an answer. I posted like, a year ago?

A: Which is the best FTP Client for Windows 7?

DiagoFileZilla works 100% on Windows 7. I use it every day and have never had an issue. However you can also look at: SmartFTP WinSCP

I almost feel sorry.

LOL.

@Sathya: Seems he misunderstood my intention with the comment I made to him, I've actually read his comment first which didn't show me that it was meant as a joke...

On that note. I am out. I really have to try and finish this code.

But whoever did it can be thankful, back at zero.

8:50 PM
@Diago aw shucks nothing to think about. We get angry at first. Then the realization sinks in
gotta love [always-friday-in-iceland]

Q: About your f***ing website.

Jeff AtwoodPresented for your enjoyment-slash-amusement. Email received by team@stackoverflow.com from Name Jesus Christ Almighty, what a f***ing mess of a website. I'm trying to post a question. Just the one, you know, f***ing question. So I sign up for an ID and I'm sent an email that doesn't real...

Oh... Stupid bug in Outlook.
HTML formatted mails are not shown when they are in the junk folder, but when I remove the mail and look in the deleted folder it does render HTML...
IE is more secure these days, but it's probably a security leak.

10:30 PM
Hmm, 30 questions in half a day... That's 10% of the NPR site's total.
I guess it would be wrong to have posed 100 questions by the end of the week, around 33% of the site... :S

11:21 PM
@TomWij quantity isn't everything.

@Diago If you want rude, drop the length of an answer to about three paragraphs, each of those no more than two sentences. And not long winded ones either.

hiya @random

@Sathya Do you ever exhaust your close votes?

@random never have.
not yet anyway.

Is it imagination or does IE really feel like it caches most pages a lot longer than other browsers, no matter the settings?

11:28 PM
Haven't used IE that much.

You should. It's great for feeling like you're stuck in an office environment all day long.

@random heh!
imma head out. cheers.

@Sathya For Google it is... :-)

11:47 PM
I'm suffering the I-feel-like-a-robot-due-to-the-reCAPTCHA-system, can anyone heal me? xD
