Q: Super Contest Winners: Week 2

Jeff AtwoodThis post is to document the week 2 winners of the Super User Super Contest, for the week ending Monday, September 6. Congratulations to our winners this week! Best rookie performance by Shogun and pattern86 (special exception this week, since both new users were worthy -- both get the priz...

We're still here, hiding in the shadows

2:01 AM
Week 3 begins, I have to go sleep now, study tomorrow, do exam the day after, will be tired after that. Guess my chances are low this week... :-(
But I guess that if reputation is given slightly later my efforts in the end of this week will help me in Week 4...

ANyone know the proper fstab options for mounting an nfs share on Ubuntu 10.04 server?
Apparently with default options boot will now hang
I think it might be _netdev...
we'll see

hiya @Josh

Hey @Sathya!
How goes?
(brb rebooting server, making sure it boots OK this time...)

not bad @Josh. Had fun ?

@Sathya kinda. Had a lot of hardware issues to deal with over the weekend!
have a server that isn't very happy, hangs at boot

@Josh ah. what kinda issues ?

4:06 PM
@Sathya It's an Ubuntu server, and I have narrowed it down to incorrect fstab options for an NFS mount
it's trying to mount the share before it brings up the network, and that fails so the boot hangs
problem is there's a lot of bug reports and forum posts about it, with no clear answer, so I have to try each one

4:27 PM
Ug, gone from bad to worse. Now I get mountall: fsck /var terminated with status 1

ugh that sucks @Josh

Yeah, and the closest google result is a guy saying "I spent a while trying to fix this problem and didn't have any success. I ended up reformatting the hard drive and reinstalled from scratch. Everything is working fine now"

wow.

4:55 PM
Fixed it!
it actually had nothing to do with any of the error messages I was seeing, heh

how did ya fix it ?

trial and error, haha!

haha, best way to fix it incase of no documentation

@Josh SuperUser/SO FAQ
composed a rather length question on bounty, on this question

Q: How to remove duplicate entries in iTunes

MakachFor some reason, songs in my itunes library are listed twice. Note: It is the exact same song just referenced twice, so removing one of the songs will keep one reference in the library but delete the song efficiently making the remaining song just a dead link. this is similar to other superuser ...

only to find that if I had RTFM I woudn't have to compose the question :-\

@Sathya Ug :-(

7:22 PM
@Sathya The built-in duplicate finder is rather limited.

@Chealion The related questions tab ?
true.
I prefer this approach:
Sep 3 at 21:42, by Sathya
@Chealion I rarely search - just click on ask a question and enter the keywords. The related questions fetches the dupes for me.

I don't know how much it differs from just entering keywords instead of typing a title...
But you might want to check the script I wrote too:
5
A: See possible duplicates in question.

TomWijMy guess is that this will not be implemented as the percentage of users that checks this is rather small. As my interest lies in this and writing user scripts I decided to write one to simplify it now: The user script can be obtained here, the source here, it works for both Google Chrome and Fi...

@TomWij by keywords I generally mean the title in contention for dupe :P

Hmm, I should rename the link to "Show/hide possible duplicates" tomorrow.
It currently says "Show/hide related" but that is a bit stupid because a related list is down there... :-D

ugh silverlight installer just issued a refresh command to all my tabs. jeez

7:31 PM
Anyway, off to learning... My last theory exam tomorrow, then still have an exercises exam but it requires less effort.
@Sathya: Indeed sounds like annoying behavior...
Guess some alpha users complained about Silverlight not directly functioning, or just developers that don't think twice.

@TomWij well the installer does prompt you to refresh the tab
why the heck does it go ahead with the refresh
anyways best wishes for the exam @TomWij

7:46 PM
@Sathya In iTunes. Sorry was AFK.
@Sathya At least it installs without forcing you to shut down your browser for the installation like another company

@Chealion never used it in iTunes to be honest
@Chealion I loathe iTunes. I have it just to sync my iPhone

@Sathya Used it once - wasn't worth it. Had to clean duplicates for a client once - used a 3rd party app instead.

@Chealion which one ?

@Sathya A program called Dupin. Mac only I think but it allowed me to choose actual duplicates instead of just song title because he had 3 or 4 different versions of some songs and wanted to keep the different versions but get rid of the extra files he accidentally imported.

@Chealion oh seems nice.

7:53 PM
@Sathya iTunes is just plain odd. Part UI playground, a dash of music playing, a massive helping of feature creep attached to a trailer of resource hungriness.

@Chealion Yeah. I dunno how it is on the Mac though. Not sure if its crap on Windows only or some thing on the Mac

@Sathya I like iTunes on Mac
but I seem to be in the minority around here. Most people on SOFU hate iTunes with a passion :-)

@Josh hehe ::D

@Josh Have you used it much on Windows?

@Chealion Never
well, maybe once like 3 years ago

8:05 PM
@Josh It's decidely un-Windows like. Suspect that's where most of the hatred comes from - not being extensible enough and the sheer bloat of features it has now.
I wouldn't say I like it anymore but I use it every day on my Mac.
It works and that is what matters.

@Chealion agreed :-)

8:24 PM
there's no way to get the number of close votes by person via the data explorer, is there ?

8:35 PM
You guys heard of Tab Candy aka Firefox Panaroma right ?
Well, here's the Chrome Extension clone

@Sathya I have not, what is it?

@Josh think of it as organizing your tabs in groups, and keep them separated.

@Sathya Oh, nice

create a group, for example, for SO/SU/MSU
create another group for your RSS & other time wasters

@Sathya haha, awesome

8:40 PM
combine the above 2 groups in another group called procrastination XD
( yeah I'm ripping off the video, excuse me)
have a main group for your work related web dev stuff
zoom into your work group, get your work done, take a break, zoom out from work, dive into the procrastination group.

I need to check that out!

@Chaeleon @Sathya @Josh I used WMP first, then moved to the Zune Software because it worked out much better for organizing and it's a gorgeous UI compared to WMP. But at one day I went to iTunes for the smart playlist behavior, the rest works out fine too... It's less bloated as in the past and I don't find it annoying in any way if you just disable the services that come with it. But well, I'll stay with it as long as it fits my needs...
Haven't seen another player that tends to work for me, maybe one day I would...
I'm a bit against Apple, but strange enough I love to use iTunes. :-)
Years ago that program was responsible for breaking up your computer...
Like your CD drive disappearing because the iTunes Upper Filter Driver is misbehaving. xD
I heard Foobar 2000 has smart playlists, but it looks a bit too simple as far as I can see...
Winamp and Songbird are nice players too but they don't work out for me as much as Zune Software and iTunes would do.
Smart playlists are nice... e.g. If you are bored of hearing the same songs over: Play those songs that are better than X stars and that you haven't heard the last X months.
That's my view on it, it's not the best as I miss lots of other features.
But as with anything (whether it be hardware, software, gadgets, ...): It's a personal choice... :-)
returns to the last 12 hard pages of Linear Algebra. *ugh*
Not to forget the proofs I have to study after it... :-(
