anyone looking for free flag weight might want to take a look at stackoverflow.com/questions/8513435/…
(or a mod)
anything that makes those answers/accounts vanish faster would be good
@EvanCarroll that's comprehensively closed
12:55 AM
Optimizing coming along nicely.
(Search optimization. I realized that most of my problems are probably related to how I'm using existing frameworks, since I'm not implementing any search algorithms.
Ladies and gentlemen, the worst question title of the year award goes to... stackoverflow.com/posts/8513091/revisions
@YiJiangsProble_ And the user apparently wants to by bytten by unicorns.

Strange, I can't get the site's @font-face font to work

@YiJiangsProble_ Overall, I quite like it. The chat theme though is another matter...

2:20 PM
Hi all :-)
2:33 PM
Mornin Neal.
@aman please fix your username. Annoying as ___ to ping you.
@Moshe ummmm u realize that it autocompletes right?
@aman Not on iOS.
I'm sad the movies chat room cleared out after private beta.
I'm sad that people keep suggesting SO to askers of atrociously written programming questions posted to MSO.
2:39 PM
Well, @TinyMoo shows over, clear out. Let em sweep up all the popcorn so the next group of askers can enjoy the show.
@PopularDemand oy. im sorry that im one of them X_x
I am so looking forward to going to this for epic lulz: trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/battleship
@TinymooTim haha what? thats a movie!?
Q: Treat Chinese character's length doubled

AntiGameZWhen answering questions I encountered a notify that I should input more than 30 characters. Some questions can be answered use chinese mixture shortly like this post. Should we treat a Chinese character as two latin characters? When I develop website in China, we deal with the problem like that.

I think this is a good question, especially if we're going to get questions that are completely in Chinese
2:43 PM
@YiJiangsProble_ booo cant see that
The summery given in the onebox is the entire question
Why do bad questions on this site always seem to get off topic votes. It worries me.
Q: what do you peoples things about The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

ainsliejonesThe latest 2011 part of twilight move is very nice. i would like to know the view on latest part .

Maybe people consider Twilight to be "dreck," not a "movie." (To be fair, that's just based on its reputation; I have no personal experience with it.)
I'm just glad I don't have to watch them.
2:58 PM
I have a money saving idea.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Awful. Just awful.
@jadarnel27 look at prev Q's
Those stupid timeshare companies need to hack a celebrity's twitter account and accidentally tweet their sales number as that person's phone number.
BAM instant people calling and because they're the type of people who would call an accidentally tweeted phone number, they're probably also the type of people who would buy a timeshare.
No offense to anyone who owns a timeshare. They suckered me in once.
3:03 PM
@TinymooTim Maybe if the celebrity in question was Warren Buffett.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Oddly enough, the previous questions are not ridiculously off-topic (like the one you linked).
(I can't see deleted questions, though)
I do like the free money and services they give you to watch their presentations; but you have to realize they get that money from the people who actually buy things from them.
Excuse me? It's a free country, I don't have to realize anything. The Earth is flat, Santa is real and timeshares are awesome.
3:15 PM
And the first thing at Christmas, that Santa gave to me ... a f*** ton of free flag weight
Excuse me? I'm from Canada
I'll have none of this cross-border "It's a free country." nonsense.
I thought about that, but I was under the impression that Canada was also free. Tell us more (if you can).
We have an Orwellian "Charter of Rights and Freedoms".
It has weazel words in it which allow the government to ignore it when convenient.
And a clause which allows them to pass laws which contravene parts of it so long as the law acknowledges that it's doing that.
So, sure we're free now but in 5 minutes, who knows?
What makes New Brunswick special enough to have custom sections of the Language Rights part of the charter?
I'm... Not... Sure...
They probably just whined enough for them.
3:38 PM
@TinymooTim "Fire the guns" - "Sir, which ones" - "ALL OF THEM".
I wish I could downvote comments.
3:57 PM
Enough jQuery?
A: Make a number a percentage

NealA percentage is just: (number_one / number_two) * 100 No need for anything fancy: var number1 = 4.954848; var number2 = 5.9797; alert(Math.floor((number1 / number2) * 100)); //w00t!

@jadarnel27 lol and the jQuery anser was chosen
^^^what he said =)
I really want to ask a meta Q abt it now lol
4:05 PM
A percentage was transferred over the internet.
Haha he switched to me answer.
user image
Where are my legs?
Needs moar ^_^
Booo so annoying I wanted the populist badge :-(
4:10 PM
#17855 month rank -16052 change. Hehehehe.
Crap I wanted a badge here:
A: MVC button to update a model field

mootinatorYou should definitely use jQuery. It's really great and does all things.

That question actually made sense to me.
4:37 PM
So... close...
Q: Don't close questions where the user has requested that it not be closed

Adam DavisThe system should search posts for the word "please" in proximity to the phrase "don't close" or "do not close", and if found together disable the close link for the following reasons: They asked nicely They knew enough about the system to understand that posts can be closed, and thus are exper...

Just need another 3 downvotes.
@AdamDavis hehe i had added a bounty to that
I noticed!
I forgot to choose an answer
Thanks. I added another bounty.
@AdamDavis boo 8 upvotes :-P
4:39 PM
I know! People are terrible.
It'd have been there days ago had those eight people not missed the downvote button and clicked upvote by accident.
2 more to go...
@AdamDavis lol I added an answer just for fun
u made it!
4:41 PM
Last one =)
lol and increasing ^_^
And now @amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA is going to post on meta about the formatting when a negative score answer reaches 3 digits. Right?
It's a feature request now. Wonder how long until it receives [status-declined]?
@AdamDavis w00t to a :-)
@AdamDavis lol well it can't be closed :-P (except by a mod :-( )
4:43 PM
It doesn't matter much, though, it doesn't show up on the front page no matter how many times its bumped.
Doesn't show up in the featured questions list either, even with a 500 point bounty.
@AdamDavis odd. thats a meta issue, no?
No, anything downvoted to -4 or worse (last time I checked) does not make it to the front page.
or doesn't reappear on it anyway. I think this is true for all sites now. I didn't realize it also affected the bounty questions, but it makes sense that it would.
@AdamDavis For meta sites that was relaxed to... -8?
Q: Why it is not in the featured tab?

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM AI know this question has A LOT of downvotes, but it is a bountied question and it deserves it's right in the limelight (aka the featured tab) The question at hand: Don't close questions where the user has requested that it not be closed

@PopularDemand source?
They have even removed it from the list of all questions, sorted by votes: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions?page=613&sort=votes
4:49 PM
@AdamDavis add that to my OP...
wth lol thats no fair :-P
So while I'd like to say I've got the most downvoted question on meta, I can't actually check that out without doing a data explorer query.
@AdamDavis thats silly
Not that it matters. It's a fun friday question, and we can't be having too much fun around here...
A: Meta sites' front pages should not hide questions with very low scores

Jeff AtwoodThe threshold is higher on meta, I think it's -8 or so compared to -4 on the parent site. Are you recommending that as the standard for all metas? I think I could support that. edit: setting this to a global value of -8 for all metas.

4:54 PM
@AdamDavis u see jonsca's comment on the OP? I dont see it..
Two down. One to go. Then one more next week.
There are two ways to find the featured list: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/116150/…
Q: Why are there two featured lists?

Adam DavisThere are two featured lists with the same URL, but different results: Go to http://meta.stackoverflow.com Click on "Questions" Click on "featured" You'll see one list with the URL http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions?sort=featured Go to http://meta.stackoverflow.com Click on "featured" ...

@adam thanks for the vote of confidence last night. I actually fell asleep. Haha. I woke up early and crammed.
Was easier than expected. Much easier.
@AdamDavis No-repro here.
I see it sitting at the bottom of page 613, just waiting to lure in passersby who want to gawk at the lowest-scoring MSO question ever.
5:07 PM
That's in IE8. Looks fine in FF8
^Same in IE9.
That was reported during the first 2011 SO mod election, but was completed by not displaying large negative numbers rather than by "actually" fixing anything.
Here's how it'll look if we can get it to 4 digits (thanks to the framework that is really great and does all things.)
Well, I'm glad to have been the impetus to research these very important issues (large negative number layout and featured question lists) ;P
@Moshe Great! Good luck on your last one.
5:22 PM
Hmm, is it possible that an html file I was developing locally and seeing how it looked in chrome looks quite different when uploaded?
@Moshe exams? Good luck!
Shouldn't it be exactly the same?
Why would chrome process the files differently or am I screwing it up elsewhere?
@Trufa Perhaps something different happens when the page is requested through IIS?
Does each browser have a default stylesheet that gets applied?
5:31 PM
@jadarnel27 I've tried re-uploading, could this happen every time?
@AdamDavis no, i don't think so
hehe it was an image that for some reason had not been uploaded completely
@Trufa What I mean is, when you view the file locally through your browser, it's just rendering a local html file. When you upload to a server and go to the web page, the browser requests that file from the web server. I may be receiving something different / extra?
I didn't even know that was possible
it was a little bit shorter and ruining my css
Disregard my craziness, then =) Glad it was something simple.
@jadarnel27 hehehe thank goodness it had nothing to do with that!
Thanks anyways!! :)
@ShawnChin Yup, last one for the day in 20 min. Thanks.
6:34 PM
@TinyTim I tried cleaning up posts like that before, but it didn't go over well...
Is there a meta post about the per-site metas showing non-existent rep changes?
Because I want to upvote it.
@AdamDavis I've always wondered...what's the point of that question / feature request?
I assume it's tongue-in-cheek?
@Chris Can megaman take the powers of a laptop? Does he have to destroy it before he can?
@Kalamane Oooh, good question. I never thought about that before...
I don't think he can take the power of household electronics
He'd probably have to destroy PC Man or something
Or maybe if the computer was manufactured by Dr. Wily?
6:46 PM
So we have a few rules, right?
His opponents have to be robotic for him to take their powers.
They don't have to have Man at the end of their name, but most do.
@Kalamane I always assumed so
@Kalamane That depends on which series you're talking about
True. If it's the American TV show he only has to touch them.
That was lame
Better than nothing.
So, would you count a macbook as a robot?
What constitutes a robot?
@Kalamane Yeah, but I remember being so disappointed when I watched that show for the first time
6:49 PM
@Chris It was pretty bad...
Just like the weekday-morning Sonic cartoons
Although I do remember enjoying the Saturday-morning Sonic cartoon...
The sonic cartoons were pretty good. The art wasn't so great, but if you sat down with a hot Chili-Dog right as it got going, it was wonderful.
What was with the chili-dogs anyway?
Q: SE 2.0 Meta doesn't award rep, but it refers to "rep"

Dennis WilliamsonI originally posted this on MSF, but it got no response, so at the suggestion made in a comment there, I'm reposting it here. This should be called "up-votes", or something like that, showing a count ("1" in this case) instead of a value. I'm not sure what should be done with down-votes....

Yeah, that's not quite the issue, so I posted a new question.
Q: Recent Activity (Rep) Showing on Per-Site Meta

Tiny mooTimThis question would appear to be status-complete now that the rep tab is gone from SE2.0 metas and the /reputation URL returns nothing of interest: SE 2.0 Meta doesn't award rep, but it refers to "rep" But I see rep changes in the user dropdown: Like most neurotic posters on me...

Terrible title. I should be fired.
I just Googled for "stackoverflow.in" because of this answer. After telling Google that no, I wasn't looking for Stack Overflow interview questions, I saw this: "Stackoverflow.in offers Activex Control, Joel Spolsky, Protection Mechanism, and Infinite Recursion. Stackoverflow - your number one choice for Memory ..."
7:03 PM
Hahaha, awesome.
7:22 PM
I just got this e-mail: "[name], We have an opening at [company] for a Software Engineer based out of [location]. If you are unfamiliar with [company again], the projects we currently are involved in are distribution centers and automated material handling systems for customers like Target, Walmart, Publix etc. After reviewing your profile, I thought you may fit into this position nicely"... at my current job's e-mail. Some screener at that company failed.
@PopularDemand a few months ago, I got a call from a headhunter on my work phone.
I consider that less bad; there's no obvious indication from a phone number that it's a corporate number.
I have gotten calls from headhunters on my cell, while at work, which I said "no thanks" to just a little louder than I really needed to.
@aman sleep?
@Moshe yes?
@Moshe did u see my framework? (can't remember if i showed it to you)
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA You did kinda shout "SLEEP" a little while ago =)
7:32 PM
@jadarnel27 lol i know. what about my other query?
About your framework? I haven't seen it.
Is it awesome and filled with jQuery?
Anyone been watching the SOPA discussion? judiciary.house.gov/hearings/mark_12152011.html
There's one representative who used to own an ISP and has a good grasp of the technical issues, a handful more who seem to have done a relatively good job informing themselves, and the remaining mob has no idea what's going on.
@JeremyBanks I tried and it tried to download reflector-39480.asx, which I assume is some Microsoft thing
7:36 PM
@Fezziwig It opened fine in VLC on OS X for me. I'm not sure what it's using.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Neat-o. I don't know anything about PHP though.
Q: Why does the Transcript and the actual chat room have different Timestamps?

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM ASee the transcript here: And the actual timestamps here: Why do they differ? For one thing the transcript version is in 12 Hour and and the chatroom is in 24 Hour mode. And the other is that the transcript is 5 hours ahead of the chatroom. How is that possible?

@jadarnel27 :-P
I find that language to be incredibly confusing to look at =)
(and by confusing, I obviously mean UGLY)
@jadarnel27 why is that? :-(
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Are you in EST?
7:38 PM
@JeremyBanks Ja Ja
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA I'm sure my bias comes from lack of experience haha
get experienced!
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA So it uses the client's localized clock in the chat interface, and the server's UTC clock in the transcript. Huh.
@JeremyBanks lol and one is 24 hr mode and the other is 12 hr. wth hehe
@JeremyBanks Good catch, that was quick!
7:48 PM
@JeremyBanks They were in recess, but it looks like they're resuming in a minute, if anybody cares to watch.
8:05 PM
8:43 PM
@aman nope.
Did not see your framework
@Moshe any constructive comments?
Melvin Luther (Mel) Watt (born August 26, 1945) is the United States House of Representatives for , serving since 1993. He is a member of the Democratic Party. This guy will not stop talking, despite admittedly not understanding a thing about the technical issues he's speaking on. He's also pushing for them to not consult technical experts, because that wouldn't accomplish anything. Isn't government great?
It feels like he's spoken more than anybody else, despite having nothing to contribute.
9:01 PM
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Not on the this little sleep. But I can talk like Representative Matt.
@JeremyBanks Did he provide any rational explanation for why it wouldn't accomplish anything to consult experts? o_O
(Note that I do not think there is any such rational explanation)
@jadarnel27 As far as I can tell, his only argument is that it would be possible to produce experts arguing both sides of the issue, as though that is somehow unique to this issue.
I think by "accomplish anything" he probably meant "expedite the speed at which they ram through the legislation without thinking about it."
@TinymooTim That too. He's convinced that it needs to be passed as fast as possible, though he's failed to provide a real justification for this when asked by others.
9:04 PM
Maaaan that is why I have trouble listening to politcal arguments like that.
We are debating the Stop Online Piracy Act and Shiela Jackson has so bored me that I'm killing time by surfing the Internet.
Ah, your job is too boring for you? Perhaps you should find another.
...I can't believe he seriously tweeted that, that's incredibly rude
Why do they keep calling people each other "the gentleman from __"?
@Fezziwig I know. At first I thought there was no way that could really be a legitimate Twitter account, but it's linked from his government profile. Unbelievable.
The gentleman from Utah? The gentleman from Ohio. The gentleman from California.
How the F does this have to do with homeland security?
9:09 PM
@Moshe It's a long-running joke about the integrity of Congress members.
The archutec?
"The archutec of the internet is fast changing."
She's reading the tweet!
Really? I really need to figure out how to watch that feed on this machine
She's calling him out on it!!!!
I assumed that was fake...
9:11 PM
OMG. That's hilarious.
I'm in the middle of my monologue, you mean. It's no dialogue.
I have to take the dog out, it pains me to miss this. Be back soon.
This is so hilarious.
I'm amused by this on so many levels.
@PopularDemand Nice
does anybody use filezilla here? if so maybe you might know, is there a way for filezilla not to ask if you want the file that you modified and saved uploaded, I'd rather it just uploaded it without asking when I save it...
I've been waiting for someone to link xkcd in here all day so I could finally read it
That one was just a "meh" for me.
9:27 PM
@Fezziwig Tomorrow you can just look at the log.
@TinymooTim Ooo. Handy
Link the next few weeks for me; I'll bookmark it
9:27 PM
@TinymooTim Hilarious =)
@JeremyBanks forward!
Voting now?
9:35 PM
What are they voting?
There's a vote happening, not sure what though, just got back from shopping.
@Moshe I missed it, I'm not sure. (Just got back from walking the dog.)
Ah, an amendment.
All in favor of pork?
Yay introduce the use of the word of system to add ambiguity.
9:38 PM
That reminds me; I should pirate some movies.
> The amendment states that operators of DNS do not have an obligation to block a foreign website if it would impair the security or integrity of their DNS/servers/network. The purpose is to ensure that these factors are considered at all points while these laws are being applied.
(not a literal quote, paraphrasing)
Yay, she's speaking against SOPA.
When did you start watching?
She seems to have a clue. She's spoken up quite a bit.
Pay $8.50 to watch a movie on a 7" screen on an airplane? I don't think so... lol
@JeremyBanks I got back from shopping when I asked about what they were voting on.
9:41 PM
Hey, I got it to work! Yay congress
I was watching earlier when the fight over "offensive" on the record broke out earlier.
@JeremyBanks - Got the link for the SOPA stream again? I want to share on FB.
2 hours ago, by Jeremy Banks
Anyone been watching the SOPA discussion? http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/mark_12152011.html
@Moshe Did the "offensive" remark end up being entered in the record?
@JeremyBanks Not sure. Missed it.
This is actually pretty dangerous, because they can quell their concerns with the overall bull with this amendment.
Did he just say "Mr. Berman"?
Snap, he did!
Look at the nameplate.
9:47 PM
I'm about 80% sure that's not you. Maybe 85%
@Fezziwig Yea, well...
He mentioned Bing and almost forgot Facebook
Speaking of Facebook...
I'm pretty sure it's not about the foreign network... (which I think is what this guy just said)
My Facebook post: The government is debating Stop Online Piracy Act now. SOPA is a threat to everything on the internet. Watch the LIVE video here: http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/mark_12152011.html

See this site for more about what you can do:
9:50 PM
Congress, sue me for linking that live stream.
This is painful to watch.
The whole bill should be meaningless.
I rarely watch political bullshit like this
Me too, first time ever.
but it's worth watching occasionally, and this is a pretty relevant one.
So I'm doing my best to endure it. :P
Woman on the left behind the clerk is texting/tweeting.
Ouch, amendment is getting burned.
9:56 PM
@Moshe That's what it was like when I first turned the stream on, hours ago.
Mr. Berman votes no.
@Moshe I don't think they've passed a single amendment yet...
3 - <10
This amendment = dead.
