I really need to finish up my query on my other screen rather than dick around on dba.SE

The answer is, the console is supposed to do that. He should be using a client that specifically ignores those types of signals.

I'm just mulling the finer points of my query
@TimPost yeah, I think so too.
Dan why did you delete that?

You've got it covered already
The MySQL protocol allows for safe transactions. An infinite number of programs can be written that won't allow an end user to safely perform one. :)

lol, ok, well just so we're clear, I'm going to move my two comments into one answer and respond to his actual question shortly. I just want to give him time to respond.
@DanGrossman hehe, I like that.
So my selection query returns 8 records, the output on my update returns 8 records and they appear as I want them to appear. I think I'm good.
Now to deploy this to the customer site and watch it burninate itself with fire.
actually, I just realized I could write this as a CTE
damn you brain, quit thinking

I've decided that CTEs are the devil

3:14 AM
CTEs are awesome
I just converted my sproc to use a CTE and eliminated a temp table and made my code look like a grownup wrote it

Ahahahhahaha

@mootinator I made it moar awesome

lol
Eugh

@drachenstern do you ask "Is the cake really a lie" for every a51 proposal?

@Zypher I don't think so. Do I?

3:24 AM
Is the cake really a lie?

drachenstern, Shreveport, LA

it would appear I do not
I wanted something that was definitively off-topic.
I can see that at least two people aren't sure that it's not.
ok, who the hell is responsible for coloring those columns?

hmm <strike>wrong profile</strike> but .. yes i guess it's just popular for some reason :)
oh that's fail

green = good ... red = bad, blue = indeterminate
:548040 do we have a meta for area51 or just use MSO?
that's two tickets I want to submit

MSO

err, that would be a chat issue on one wouldn't it?
ffs, I'm not even sure :p

Q: How can we enter data in between of the stack?

NikkiProposal: Practical Algorithms and Data Structures hi...... Is there any way to insert data in between of the stack without using another stack. Can anyone provide the algorithm for this? Thanks

yeah, one's chatfeedback

It's impressive that someone found the rarely-linked Area 51, then decided it was a Q&A site for programmers.

Indeed

I NO! Use a linked list!

It's not a stack if you insert data in the middle, is it? :O

3:30 AM
> I am asking about stack which is used in data structure and not question is about stackoverflow!!!! I hope you would have seen queues and stacks in data structure also.
that made me lol

Obviously it didn't belong in meta then...

By process of elimination...
The hell is wrong with me today.

uhh cake?
hmm i should really put some effort into learning c#

Q: Area51 user profile proposed questions box coloring is confusing, can we swap the latter two?

drachenstern I think it makes more sense for the "bad questions" column to be red, and the "meh questions" to be blue.

3:34 AM
@drachenstern But... But... The questions which have lost rep would then be blue.
Which would be confusing in an entirely different way.

@mootinator what lost rep?

So...who wants to run the THC tomorrow morning for me so that I can sleep?

wait, am I missing something?

Good on topic example = + rep

You get a gold star in thanks! (:

3:34 AM
Good off topic example = + rep
not a good example = - rep

@RebeccaChernoff Hey, you aren't getting out of it that easily. I'm coming to do the digest though, since I think Josh can't make it.

I was not aware of that
@RebeccaChernoff hahahahahahaahalmaomaihn
@mootinator really?

@TimStone ah well if you'll already be there...

Hah! :p

@drachenstern Really

3:37 AM
@mootinator cough I don't read cough obviously

@drachenstern Yeah, I didn't either.
I just happen to know because I have both types of question on my account.

Well as you can see I have a mix of all three
I feel like I'm pretty good at coming up with crappy examples :D

True.
High quality crappy examples.

That's me. High quality crap.

Clearly Area 51 has the full complement of puritans.

3:43 AM
Had a little to drink tonight, @mootinator?
...or, last November, I guess...

I'm sure it followed naturally from a conversation in this very room last November.

I could see that.

I'm almost certain it did since I upvoted it

learned a new acronym today

@MichaelPetrotta yeah?

as in, I just learned a new acronym. Like, from another chat member.

Lies! No one learns anything in chat.

whose name begins with d, and ends with rachenstern

3:52 AM
@MichaelPetrotta would it be the one I used in :548102 ? by chance?

by chance.

Then may I welcome you to the internets. You should also review the rules.

O_o

I love having undocumented tools in my toolkits. I dislike having to type them everytime I want to use them into the URL

Alright, I'm adding figuring out what the hell causes that damn bug to my list of things to do.
Tired of it posting my last image >_>
But also, the hell Chrome?

Impossible colors are hues that can only be perceived under specific conditions. Examples of impossible colors are bluish-yellow and reddish-green. This does not mean the muddy brown color created when mixing red and green paints, or the green color from yellow and blue, but completely unique "new" colors. Opponent process The color opponent process is a color theory that states that the human visual system interprets information about color by processing signals from cones and rods in an antagonistic manner. The three types of cones have some overlap in the wavelengths of light to which...

@DanGrossman Pics or it didn't happen.

3:58 AM

ok, I don't know why it's 10pm, but it is. Therefore I should go home.

Note that I'm pretty sure one of those statements is rhetorical

nice
@drachenstern Therefore is a strong indicator of rhetoric.

4:02 AM
@mootinator it was the prior statement that was rhetorical. But you're right.
@DanGrossman examples of people with too much time on their hands.

I'll be back after the dogs' bowels have been evacuated
I still need to pretend to ingest food. And then there's Colbert.

@drachenstern: Please do let us know how it went. So to speak.

:is attempting to make a bootable copy of this hard drive on a USB drive:

@MichaelPetrotta it went as well as one might expect, I presume
Colbert, however, is hilarious

@Moshe, isn't it bedtime?

ah, SO down?

Q: Downforeveryoneorjustme.com reports stackoverflow as down ... what's up with that?

drachensternhttp://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.stackoverflow.com It's not just you! http://www.stackoverflow.com looks down from here. but clicking the link takes me through to the page just fine. related: Timeout problems on SO

@Benjol I'm told it doesn't ever happen, and that if it does it's my fault, and I did something, and I shouldn't let it bother me, cos it's obviously my fault.
I've tried to explain that it's not my problem ;)

status-works-on-my-machine

@drachenstern, eh, I got the 'maintenance' page, I'm no expert, but I don't think my internet connection can do that :)

@MichaelPetrotta so you say ;)

status-under-maintenance

@Benjol yeah, I get that more often on meta
ok, I'm gonna go for now for reals instead of responding that the site isn't down
until tomorrow

5:53 AM
Hi @TimPost, could you kill off this one: stackoverflow.com/questions/5189928/which-is-the-best-git-gui
It's a duplicate combined with a minimum effort

Damn, he was quick on the draw. :P

@Benjol Agreed.
@TimStone Draw? Every SO moderator is issued at least one black helicopter after being elected

Could you @Tims, like, merge or something? It's confusing.

@TimPost, by the way, with your 'eastern sensibilities', what do you make of the kurfuffle yesterday (starting with Sankar's starred comment to the right)

So I don't have to draw .. I just kinda ... hover

5:56 AM
@TimPost Ah, so instead of pulling out your six-shooter you fire off Hellfire missiles. Very nice.

@MichaelPetrotta, close as duplicate? :) I think you might be a potential victim of that too

@Benjol: yeah, well, I'm working on that. Haven't had much luck buying off @MichaelMrozek

@TimStone It's actually a sort of proton cannon, but I can't say much more than that.

@MichaelPetrotta But that'd only be half as fun.
@TimPost Of course. I forgot about that "Make it awesome" mantra.

FYI ... I can haz moar tabs stackoverflow.com/users
also "skeet" will find "Jon Skeet"

5:59 AM
someone found the % key

Hooray!

Wow! skaffman is unreal?!

341 edits just this week? Wow.

@waffles FWIW, I'd still really like the "take me to my page" button...
@TimStone, look at all time, he blows everyone else out the water, he's got copy editor, what, 60 times?

Woah

6:06 AM
if 60 == 1, but still

I definitely should edit more, I see a lot of stuff that could use cleaning up. I just have a bad habit of going "Well, it's not so bad" to justify my laziness, meh.

I edit like crazy, and it just makes me feel OCD.

I should also probably answer all of those questions so I can close some tabs.

Q: How to update values in hashmap

jnivasreddyCan any one tell me how to update values in a hash map

I sympathize with the closure, but "Too Localized"?

Yeah, it could have easily been closed as a duplicate.
That's actually what I was on my way to do, then saw it had already been closed heh.

6:11 AM
@TimStone So let's reopen it so we can close it for the right reason :)
@TimStone, put the dupe in a comment

Bah, I already closed the tab. :p

I'm quite proud of myself for making an auto-updating user script ;)

That is pretty nifty, how did you finally get all of the pieces to work?

@TimStone, gist doesn't have a jsonp api, so I ended up polling stackapps for comments by me on my script question, if I find one that starts with something that looks like a version number, and if that version number is different to the current version, I do a show.notify.
Mild refinement - I only check once per day.

Ah, where did you grab the version number from locally?

6:15 AM
The only downside is that I have to remember to update the version inside the code of the script.

Gotcha

I admit I didn't spend very long looking to see if it was possible, I just figured it wouldn't be possible to get it from the comment-header via javascript
@TimStone, the first iteration actually worked round that by just checking to see if the date of the comment was more recent than the last time i checked, but the major flaw in that plan was that the 'last time I checked' is stocked in local Storage, so it re-prompted you to update on every site, whether you had already updated or not

Right, right. Hmm, interesting.

I found someone else on the interwebs who'd worked round the jsonp thing by polling an image file. But that means hosting an image file somewhere. I didn't want to have to update a third place (gist+stackapps+...)

Yeah, that seems rather annoying.

6:19 AM
I still like the idea I had :)

What was your idea?

Feb 28 at 18:35, by balpha
@Benjol if (window.IWantTheVersionNumber) { window.IWantTheVersionNumber(42); return } window.IWantTheVersionNumber = alert; /* do other stuff */ }
make the update check nothing more than the script including itself

@balpha, I have to admit I didn't really understand that :(

function() {
	var VERSION = 42;

	if (window.myVersionCallback) {
		myVersionCallback(VERSION);
		return;
	}

	function updateCheck() {
		window.myVersionCallback = function (ver) {
			if (ver > VERSION)
				alert("More awesomeness available for download");
		}
		$("<script />").attr("src", "http://x.y.z/commenttemplates.user.js").appendTo("head");
	}

	if (lastCheckWasAWhileAgo())
		updateCheck();

	// now comes the actual work
	// ...
}

@balpha Ah, that's not a bad idea either.

6:26 AM
snif either it's very early in the morning, my brain is frazzled, or I'm missing the key bit, but my brain can't parse that, what does myVersionCallback do?
hang on, it's coming to me, slowly now...

Heheh ;)

@balpha is such a script tease...such a cliffhanger there!
3
// ...

lmao

1. When I decide to check for updates, I include the script 'twice'... got that far
2. The 'second' one to get included is the most recent... I think

myVersionCallback is used so that your version information can live in the closure for the purposes of comparison between the two scripts. :)

6:30 AM
3. Which means that myVersionCallback will be defined, so we can call it...

Well, the first one is always there, because the user installed it
but yes

@balpha, so it's guaranteed to 'come first'?

@RebeccaChernoff Our number one problem with this methodology is that we have no concept of a versioning policy, heh.
Tons of git commits as v1.0 FTW!

@balpha, that is wicked, and now I've understood it... resists temptation to start now, I'm supposed to be doing real work :(

6:33 AM
@benjol the second one is pulled in by the first one, so yes, the first one is already there

All versions of SE (Chat)? Modifications are the One True Versionâ„¢.

The one to rule them all.

@balpha Doh, I'm not winning any prizes for IQ today, am I? :(

Alas, balpha's awesome scripts still hold the top two spots on StackApps though.

I think it'd be super epic to do an extension, and use something similar to the ChatExtension to build in options. Want autocomplete? Check the option! Want a reply link? Check the option!

6:36 AM
I blame people using their mice. Clearly that's a behaviour we have to correct.
We might have to get around to planning that discussion sometime. :P

Haha, I like that.
We're not going to have the discussion.

@TimStone I'm quite pleased with my script's progress, given that it didn't even exist just over a week ago

We're not just going to plan the discussion.
We're just going to maybe get around to planning the discussion!

I like to set realistic goals, one step at a time! ;)
@Benjol Yeah, you've done well :D

@Benjol @RebeccaChernoff the only problem is making it backwards compatible

6:39 AM
@RebeccaChernoff We're sure as hell not planning the discussion for 8 in the morning. Who does that?!

ah wait, never mind -- the old version will just not pull the new one

@TimStone, @RebeccaChernoff, as you're both here, what do you think of this idea?

    this.define = function (name, fn, desc) {
      name = name.toLowerCase();

      if (Commands[name])
        throw new Error("The command " + name + " is already defined");

      if (!desc) desc = "Sorry, no description exists for this command";
      Commands[name] = fn;
      Descriptions[name] = desc;
    };

I'm in the more fortunate timezone. >:D

hey @balpha, wanna run a THC? (:
It's the middle of the afternoon for you!

actually, it's 7:40 in the morning

It = THC
It != now

ah okay
still, no thanks :)

all you have to do is paste in a few lines and then you can just make fun of Mrozek. (;

@Benjol Hm, we could probably store the description with the function in the same object, but otherwise seems reasonable.
Oh, that will be a highlight of this TH won't it?
I hadn't thought of it that way. Being up that early is no longer as painful.
Gah! Damn FHC script.

6:44 AM
what site is the THC for? I'm a bit out of date...

Unix & Linux

@YiJiang, the English election is finished BTW :)

so's TeX and CV (;

@RebeccaChernoff, ok, you're the expert, you can tell him :)

6:58 AM
pfffffffft elections? what elections?!

We don't need elections anymore. We have Rebecca
Is it just me, or have people (in general) been inordinately grumpy the last two weeks?

Hmm, I think I could agree with that. I've just been tired, personally, but other people.. :P

It just seems like a sudden surge of ickyness all around lately.
Maybe it's the second quarter 'push'

7:14 AM
That, or everyone must be conserving their joy for my birthday in a couple of weeks. But probably that.

@TimPost in comments, in chat?

@Benjol and that place we call 'outside'

@TimPost, oh, that :)

Appetizer later :)

Delicious :D
...Now I'm hungry, dilemma.

I could use some real food.

Just had somoe awesome mocha brownies.
I wish there were a way to upload images to chat from iOS.
Hrm...
I could add that to my todo list for my script browser... Use imgur API to upload images
Then post link...

@TimStone Part of our (my wife and I) resolution for the year was to cook more at home. So far, we're .. ugh.
Days involve jobs, cooking involves dishes .. and that's just how it goes.
Every time I see the HTML5 'logo' , I fire up Lynx and annoy people.

Yeah, I've been struggling with that myself, though I'd even rather go out than continue to eat the stuff I do now that I pull out of the freezer, heh.

@TimStone I'm doing better, I'm cooking a lot on the weekend which lasts until Wednesday or so
But breakfast usually comes out of a box

At least you get around to breakfast, heheh. I've allowed myself to hole myself up in my room for far too long, heh. If I can convince myself to get back to getting out more, hopefully going to the store and such won't seem like such a big deal.

@TimStone That was another resolution : "Eat a nutritious breakfast every day", then I found myself having waffles for dinner to honor it.
2
I changed my schedule, despite protests from my employer. Now I get up at 4 am, have an hour to chill and read the news while eating something yummy .. at work by 5 am, usually off by 2 - 3 pm

I'll just leave this here

@balpha any chance of <strike>this</strike> working in chat?

@TimPost, I'm guessing you meant @balpha?

@TimPost Hahah

@TimPost nope

@Benjol Yes and I edited it, Chrome decided it was time to refresh because I hit the backspace key

7:45 AM
@TimPost, yeah, that happens to me regularly.

chat uses the same stuff as comments do, and I'm pretty sure jeff has declined any strike syntax for comments

@balpha On the grounds that there's no syntax in the Markdown spec for it, yeah.

@TimPost i had to go check that i'm a rat .. so disappointed.

4
A: Comments should support the strike element

Jeff AtwoodThe main problem is that there's no markdown equivalent for <strike> or <s>. At the moment we only support markdown in comments.

but i was actually refering to the food -booths

7:47 AM
12 tags ought to be enough for anyone.
@balpha perhaps %strike% .. or is Jeff insisting that markdown is perfect?

in markdown proper you can just use <s>, because html is allowed. in comments, not so much. if at all, I'd probably vote for something like --wrong-- or similar

@Benjol jQuery UI has some convenience positioning method, but I forget to what extent it'd do that for you. Plus, it'd be fairly overkill for just that purpose anyway. You're better off CSS-ing it up yourself I suppose.
