Q: Relationships and Dating Closing Down

Grace NoteThis site has been in private beta for a bit over a week. In that time, it’s done some things rather nicely. The best questions and answers so far are questions of etiquette. It's been said that all etiquette boils down to applications of the golden rule, but learning what that actually means in ...

2:45 AM
Too broad @rene? Seems like a perfectly fine question: Difference between a method and a function
Also you should note that closing a question with 900+ upvotes all because of the SOCVR does look kind of strange... (there wasn't a single close vote from elsewhere)

user315433
(1) Sort by close reason, too broad. (2) Click "Leave open". (3) Repeat.

user315433
There are some exceptions from (2), sure.

Too broad is the new minimal understanding. If it's a requirement dump, sure, close it, but no effort should yield downvotes, not closing...

user315433
That's why my userscript adds a downvote button for close review.

3:03 AM
If people downvoted more, a lot more questions with close votes would be automatically roomba'd.
Also, it's actually really hard to get a question reopened. From my circumstantial evidence, very few questions are reopened from the queue.

user315433
FR: count pending non-duplicate close votes as downvotes for roomba purpose. (If the question has no upvotes, at least)

the folks who you'd wish were terrified to ask are so unafraid that they'll cheerfully flood the site with questions in the face of abuse. The folks who (with a tiny bit of assistance maybe) could ask interesting/useful questions are often so petrified of being criticized that they never even try.

It seems that editing Wikipedia articles is sometimes used as a part of coursework. See Wikipedia:Student assignments. There was also a related discussion on academia.SE What are the pros and cons of giving students assignments to write Wikipedia articles?
Does anybody know whether there were similar discussions about usage Stack Exchange in a similar way. I.e., that some activities of students as users of SE site could contribute to their grade in a course?
I am asking in connection with this discussion on a per-site meta: Would it be allowed to post a question as an exercise for students?. It would be useful for that discussion to know whether something similar was discussed elsewhere on the SE network. (I did not find anything on meta.SE.)
I should have searched better: Stack Overflow as a class assignment?
But if you are aware of some other related discussions, I will be glad if you let me know.

Hello!
Can you tell me please, how reduced my rep on mathematics site?

7:10 AM
[ SmokeDetector ] All of this user's posts are spam: user 67994 on scifi.stackexchange.com

@SmokeDetector
More that 40 (1680-1640) points, I've lost, but there is reason showing for that.

@MithleshUpadhyay Could be triggered by something. Did you check whether math.stackexchange.com/reputation shows the same number?

I should read the transcript first ...

But yesterday, I've more than 1680, today showing now 1641?

Probably one of your answer got deleted due to question removal, but that's only a guess since we don't see rep lose on your account, and can't see deleted posts on there.

7:18 AM
You wrote that "there is reason showing for that." What does the reason say? It is probably displayed only to you, since neither me nor other users see anything on your reputation profile.

@Martin, sorry for typo, I mean : "there is NO reason showing for that"

I have checked that reputation loss both if a user was removed or if an answer was deleted is shown on my profile. I am not sure whether this is different for users below 10k (i.e., not able to see deleted posts.)
@MithleshUpadhyay And math.stackexchange.com/reputation shows 1641 as well?

I've wrote 40 answers where all are showing, no deletion.

@MithleshUpadhyay just visit the link @Martin gave you

That is not correct.

7:24 AM
@MithleshUpadhyay On your reputation tab (in the lower part of the page) there is an option "show removed post". Is that field ticked in your profile?
Make sure you tick the "show removed posts" checkbox in your reputation tab and also check the "recent deleted answers" and "recent deleted questions". — Shadow Wizard May 15 at 6:10

@MithleshUpadhyay file a bug report then.

Yes, Post "Is there something special about 2016 ?" was removed yesterday, and points reduced 41, but on that post there were no upvotes, in fact -1 down vote.
So, why reduced rep?

@MithleshUpadhyay On the post you mention -1 is the total score, which is result of 16 upvotes and 17 downvotes.
So that post contributed 16*5-17*2=46 reputation points

there you are ^

Assuming you were not around reputation 1 when you posted it.

7:31 AM
Thank @Martin, and @rene for nice useful help. I got it.

@MithleshUpadhyay I might be mistaken, but I still think that if you tick "show removed posts" on your reputation tab, change of this type should be shown there.

@Martin, my mistake, after tick on "show removed posts" all redu/incr rep are showing.

Thanks again.

Although... in the past few weeks, it has been on SO exclusively. chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=backoff+received&room=11540

Maybe I should build some protection in.... I'm about to aggressively cache a lot of data

There's nothing wrong with getting backoff; the docs say it depends on server load, which may be dealing with something completely different. As long as you respect it when you get it.

Could someone back me off so I could respect it?
I can't hold my respect much longer

oooh... I got IP banned for 9 hours from the API
maybe I should slow this code down

Don't try to get yourself killed dude.

What will you do with all those posts?

That's a secret for now, but nothing malicious, the filter doesn't even grab post body

@Quill A good limit is 1 request/second.

You couldn't do something malicious even if you wanted to @Quill. You're too cute.

150 calls in 90 seconds is allowed

@TIPS Daw, thanks I think
Apparently I could cache 100000 (max page sizes) posts in two hours with 7 second delays

10000 calls per day is the quota, apart from burst-limiting throttles.

I've got to do a one-off of all the data, and then I can do sequential (grab only what's updated) calls

Which still allows for 1,000,000 questions (with all answers and comments) to be downloaded in a day. Theoretically at least.

But using the dump makes more sense with this volume of data.
