I think this is because some of the descriptions were tweaked some time after the ja.SO launch. The changes were pushed to the network, replacing earlier localized descriptions. The names did not change. Neither did the bottom options of that dialog.

@404 doubtful. Since a mod retired since the last election and the last election was in 2012, they probably just want more help.

user315433
The point is, the election had 1 slot when it began.

perhaps the mods asked for another slot.
I'm not sure if the election was mod-triggered or CM-triggered.

Android.SE mod asked to increased the slot to 2, didn't expect it worked.

user315433
@Firelord I guess so. You're definitely not the first person to be surprised by an election. In this case, the mod team knew something was coming (we were asked if we wanted additional help) but I don't believe anyone was given dates. — eldarerathis ♦ yesterday

Also Smokey doesn't interrupt active conversation.

@IͶΔ not sure what you mean

@balpha In that case, I'm not sure what I mean either
Hides

I'm just talking about the volume of smokey's messages here that may deter new users from starting conversations
and this is the main meta chat room

Well, the thing is, people don't post anything and Smokey floods here.
But it never is annoying when people are actually talking.
Like right now.

true that. When nobody is posting messages, it looks like smokey is flooding tavern.

great, so it doesn't interrupt conversations, it just prevents them from starting :\

Some of the smokedetector reasons are suppressed here, probably to prevent false positives

@Telkitty even if you ignore smokey -- this room would've looked like this when I entered:

@balpha But again, this isn't active conversation being interrupted.
Smokey was the conversation.
People are having fun with it.
It's like taking a kid's toy because he plays too much with it.

@balpha just ignore me with it ;-)

Jan 17 at 2:21, by Jason C
As for the chat being "dead", I mean, big deal. It's just a chat room. If nobody has anything to say then nobody has anything to say and that's how it is.

7:56 AM
But it might be conversation being prevented, is the argument. If you're a new user seeking support, you might be intimidated.

@JeffreyBosboom I'm very skeptical that a flag that just says "too much" is from an intimidated poor soul.

I kind of doubt anyone's coming here looking for "conversation", and I think most support cases would be better handled asynchronously on meta or a child meta. But I understand the argument, that we might as well shunt the bot to another room if this is the designated support/conversation spot.

Well, just saying. Do what you think is the best @Balpha, but I'm saying it again: This room doesn't have any problems with an active Smokey.
@JeffreyBosboom Well, first time I came here I thought it would be a meta for itself, full of new(er) users asking regulars stuff to learn the ropes.

user202362
@balpha that's because the ignore isn't working properly :p

But turns out those conversations are pretty rare. Saying it as someone who's been here everyday for some months.

And come on, where's a new user interested in meta chat coming in for the first time?

< raises eyebrow > do people still even think to start a discussion here?

Exactly

Well, compared to long days ago, some users came here to ask about meta suggestion, and there were some discussions/debate

Yeah, but that's pretty rare these days, no?

There is functionality in Smokey to send site specific reports to only dedicated rooms. I mean you don't get SO reports here anymore, they are all diverted to SOCVR. I know few other rooms across chat takes these reports. Might be an option to bring it down to only the sites that don't have an active chatroom?

@AndrewT. For most of the people it takes quite some time to realize that a user in chat is a bot.

And there's Charcoal HQ, the home of Smokey.

@AndrewT. as always, the search on chat is far from usable.... but haven't multiple users in the past stated that they "are here just for Smokey reports and aren't interested in chatting or having fun"?

As for the vibrant discussions: some active participants got suspended, some moved to the JS room, some started a Den, some became moderator, some became moderated and some forget their Glasses.

Also most stuff out there is settled, there is less need to flesh out guidance before/when it hits meta. It is more a game of fine tuning. Which leaves us with ordering coffee, talk about days that have passed and american politics: GO TRUMP!!!

I am also here only for the sake of smokey's reports. If its moved to another room, I'll just switch the rooms. That's all

Let's say... if we disable smokey's feedback only (sd k, tpu, why) on here, would it be better? User can ignore smokey's post, and the room will look clean. Other commands such as!!/report is acceptable since it's not interfering.
If they want to give feedback, then they can do it on Charcoal HQ, or metasmoke's review.

@JeffreyBosboom thanks :)

But again, I don't think that's the core issue... new user still see smokey's monologue on the first visit.

In SOCVR the room owners use an Archiver script to move stale CV-PLS requests to another room. The RO's here could use a similar tactic. to clean-out some of the transcript. That woud need 24/7 RO presence but that is a matter trust I guess and promote some more regulars to RO
@AndrewT. we could develop bots that do small talk between each other until regulars start to post messages ...
That makes that it isn't only SD posts...
