I remember someday Tim or someone else talking about this does anyone remembers?

2:08 AM
Wow. There's a ton of link-only answers in the LQP queue.

@hichris123, SmokeDetector is in Python right? Does it use the API or the websockets?

@Andy Python, Websockets.

Ok. Nevermind then. I was wondering if it had been having problems with this

has anyone ran any stats yet on the SO socratic gold badge users? Interesting to see if a lot of the users who got that badge are from questions asked prior to the new review era.

2:23 AM
@VotetoClose the badge is retroactive

@hichris123 bonus points for the one he's linking

@hichris123 Is that spam? Or is he saying his account was hacked? He seems to be in shock either way.

@VotetoClose It seems like the kind of nonsensical spam we get...

user163250

@Cupcake you out of votes?

user163250
On those questions, yes.

@VotetoClose Just knocked out the one.

user163250
I've already cast and retracted them when I wasn't sure which one was a good duplicate.

3:07 AM
@Braiam I was trying to run some Socratic badge queries... but I guess I won't be able to query by badge id or name until the next update...

Is that supposed to be surprising?

Everyone uses Stack Overflow...even the haters.

I don't mean that they use SO, of course they do. I mean that he has - Microsoft in his name... just haven't seen that before

Q: How do JavaScript closures work?

Do moderators occasionally lock or add notices to community wiki questions like that, asking people to improve existing content instead of trying to add new answers that probably no one will ever read?

paste engines, man ;)
the post clearly marks one of them as "the script". I see no issue in there, I am afraid.
"And without further a due, here is the script:"
it is gramatically incorrect a sentence, but that is another question.

user163250
Ok, fair enough, I'll retract close vote.

is this copyright violation? profile pic same as Jeff Atwoods stackoverflow.com/users/3395198/amiya ... stackoverflow.com/users/1/jeff-atwood

user163250
I noticed a user like that earlier.

user163250
I'm not sure if it's the same one.

user163250
6:46 AM
Jeff got special permission from someone to use that pic as an avatar on his blog.

well, different users having the same avatar does not violate anything per se

user163250
Hold on, I think profile picks have to be licensed under Creative Commons too.

is that picture trademarked in any way? That is the main question.

@FinalContest we're not talking about just any other user here

users do not matter here, really.

user163250
6:47 AM
It belongs to the guy who wrote Code Complete, or Rapid Development, one or the other (or both).

user163250
Like I said, Jeff got special permission to use that avatar, but user avatars are CC on Stack Overflow.

user163250
Hold on, I'm looking some stuff up...

I think what matters is trademark and SE site policy, but I would be very surprised if any two different users could not have the same avatar.

user163250
According to Jeff's About Me:

Why would it bother you anyhow? :) How do you know Guido is the real Guido on SO, for instance?

user163250
6:50 AM
> I asked, and Steve was kind enough to let me to use the image and the name for my blog.

user163250
Personally I don't care that much, but I'm interested if there's any substance behind the copyright issue.

@Cupcake: that is probably about the naming choice and the mood of the picture rather than the trademark of it.
I do not see any legal statement there.

user163250
The image is used in a book. That's where it originally came from. If it weren't for SO's CC, I would say that it's a copyright violation to use it without promotion.

Morning!

Marning!

6:53 AM
@Cupcake: mind proving that with legal statement?

user163250
Here's something interesting:

user163250
6:54 AM
Fruitful? Debatable. ;)

@Cupcake: I do not see anything about this icon in there, I am afraid.

I still did not get answer for my original question: is that picture trademarked/copyrighted?

user163250
If someone were to issue a DMCA to SO about that user's profile pic, they'd probably have to take it down.

user163250
YES! It's copyrighted!

Either way, I don't think users should be able to be named Jeff Atwood, or have the same profile pic as him.

user163250

@Cupcake: no, you claim illegit behavior for someone potentially. That is serious (harsh?), and should be only claimed when you can prove it.

I should get my face copyrighted...

there's only one other one stackoverflow.com/users/2771520/jeff-atwood , but it could be the real jeff atwood, just a dup account

@VotetoClose: let me ask my question again, how do you know Guido is the python author on SO?
or Linus Torvalds was Linus who would have likely no time for SO?

user163250

user163250
6:59 AM
I don't find that to be impersonation.

user163250
The name isn't "Jeff Atwood".

user163250
Though the user probably doesn't have permission to use the image.

@Cupcake But when I saw that picture in a thread I was in, I assumed, like most other regulars would, that that was Jeff Atwood... I just happened to look at the name like a second later and realized it wasn't. So at the very least it's deceptive.

user163250
Oh, by the way, SO doesn't enforce copyright unless issued a DMCA.

how can a site that uses cloudflare be off line for 6 hours!?

Q: The use of gender-specific pronouns on Stack Overflow

DrVThis is just a small lingual question, but it started bothering me when writing an answer. I was writing something like this: "As User1234 pointed out in his answer..." Then I realized that if User1234 is a female user, she might be offended for a reason. Then I tried the same with "her". It did...

7:22 AM
If you're not offended while on SE, then you're not participating enough :p

@rene you trying to get the pundit badge?

@FinalContest You still remember that discussion about the gender of one of the StackExchange staff member? whe should give her/him the link to the question ^_^

@rene oops, you already got it of course , but they really should come out with a gold comment badge

@SPArchaeologist: nope, I only recall bluefeet who got a "him".

7:49 AM
bluefeet isn't a SE staff member though

@rene Please read completely before answring. — Sahil 27 secs ago
@VotetoClose: that is why I said nope ;)

@Sahil I've read your question completely and I refuse to let that code be fixed in a way that has caused many problems. — rene 33 secs ago

@FinalContest nope... I don't remember the name now (too sleepy). But I remember the avatar with a female anime character, the fact I always assumed him/her to be female and the fact that some users got so much involved in the discussion that they started searching for a probably inexistent college photo.

@rene: 4 answers already! You should really have a gold badge.

@Sahil if you have such code, you are wide open to something called SQL Injection attack. Bottom line it means that hackers can easily take control over your database and possibly your whole server. You sure you want this? What rene linked to offers a better way with same results, but protecting against this kind of attack. — Shadow Wizard 50 secs ago
Think this will convince him?

@ShadowWizard Nope

@FinalContest Oh..Ok...give me a minute...

@SPArchaeologist nobody knows if Grace Note is male or female as far as I can remember.
I think Grace Note is a Cactuar, on a side note.

@SPArchaeologist: I have also seen users putting up lady pictures to get views.

I don't get it. So Grace Note is a female just like I thought she was, b.c of the name *Grace* .. and according to this comment in her (profile)[http://meta.stackexchange.com/users/146126/grace-note], it seems she is in fact a girl

Weird.

A grace note is a kind of music notation used to denote several kinds of musical ornaments, usually printed smaller to indicate that it is melodically and harmonically nonessential. When occurring by itself, a single grace note normally indicates the intention of either an appoggiatura or an acciaccatura. When they occur in groups, grace notes can be interpreted to indicate any of several different classes of ornamentation, depending on interpretation. Notation In notation a grace note is distinguished from a regular note by print size. A grace note is indicated by printing a note that...

@rene but you can't see a comment while reviewing, you can see it ONLY after you passed it
and how these audits are picked? automatically? or human choose them?

9:09 AM
They are automatically chosen.

@Templar Ah, didn't realize that. I might have failed that audit as well. You could post on meta.so to see if others agree. I'm not sure though how you can remove audits from the first posts queue

@VotetoClose very noble of you ;)

Rename yourself to VetotoClose please

10:14 AM
@Bart maybe in 27 days

@VotetoClose you can do it now. I know a trick.

shhh...

@ShadowWizard I imagine you hiding in dark alleys and whispering to people passing by "hey kid, pssst, wanna know a trick?"
4

@Stijn ugh, now you exposed my dark secret
but I show them only cool tricks!

And then they go missing ...
Soilent Green is people!!

10:30 AM
@Bart not missing, just with a different look and a different name.

@ShadowWizard @Bart did you save that to your chat note system for quick look up?

@VotetoClose it's burned into our collective memory, no need for any notes

11:30 AM
I feel like we're moving from a weekly SO has become elitist post to a daily one on MSO

ping?

@rene pong

ha works...
my UI is...well...non-exsistent...
As I'm on the train and async loading of css, by the time the css arrives at the location it was requested from the train is no longer there...

@rene done with work already for the day? Or travelling for work?

@Stijn Such an elitist statement. You've lost touch with the common man
You are the 1%

11:40 AM
@stijn on my way to Eindhoven for a meeting with customer/projectteam
cya!

@Stijn hey that was a mini WAG!

@ShadowWizard I fear WAG has a different meaning to me than it does to you
mine being the NSFW one
:)

eh? (go searching)
you mean the magazine? Not really NSFW. Or is it? ;)
Anyway meant Word Association Game, @Stijn :)

@ShadowWizard aha :D I was thinking of Wives and Girlfriends

and what's NSFW in wives and girlfriends?

11:52 AM
depending on where you work I suppose
you know the section some lesser quality newspapers have with pictures of famous people's WAGs?

I just Googled it, top result is a beauty salon website

often with few clothes

@Stijn few is more than nothing... :D
I also wear only 3 items of clothes on me and it's just enough

Left sock, right sock, ...
2

and a hat

11:57 AM
ohhhh, now I see. Well then, not going to even imagine this at work. :P

at location...

@rene how's your CSS?

12:20 PM
I've never had ReSharper before this job.
It's pretty awesome.
And humbling.
> Hi! We noticed you just wrote some code. Would you like us to rewrite it in the following, less stupid way? Let us know! Love, ReSharper.

I've tried it once but often it was just fighting my coding style

@Stijn who won?

In what way, @Stijn?

@jadarnel27 one example I remember is that I like explicit == true
@ShadowWizard me, I swiftly uninstalled it
There were a couple of features I think that I did find useful but not enough for me to bother configuring the whole thing to my taste

@Stijn oh, one hit kill. Nice!

12:26 PM
@Stijn I see.

12:40 PM
To each his own. I do revert some of the style changes that it makes.
I'm okay with my lines of code being a little longer than what ReSharper likes.

1:36 PM
@ShadowWizard it works now...
but I'm on a decent wifi now...

Ok, I have this dilemma: I need to quit the C++ lounge, but in order to quit that place I need a substitute place to stay. P.S. as much as I love here, I can not imagine staying here 24/7 <3

It's because of @ShadowWizard isn't it? I get you @chmod711telkitty

I see you are here 24/7, It's because of @ShadowWizard isn't it? I get you @Bart >_<

Absolutely. What we have a beautiful thing. Disturbing, but beautiful.

@Bart eh? me? Whaat? :D
@chmod711telkitty my Den is open for everyone... feel free to make it your home. I even got a dev dwelling there.
