Singular they is the use in English of the pronoun they, or its inflected or derivative forms, such as them, their, themself, or themselves, as a gender-neutral pronoun to refer to a single person or an antecedent that is grammatically singular. It typically occurs with an antecedent of indeterminate gender, as in sentences such as: "Somebody left their umbrella in the office. Would they please collect it?" "The patient should be told at the outset how much they will be required to pay." "But a journalist should not be forced to reveal their sources." The singular they had emerged by the 14th century...

We need to end this oppressive latin-normativity.

Next year I think I'm going back to planting under a canopy of window screen - the plants appreciate the less harsh light, and more importantly I won't have to deal with two weeks of stunted growth if we get another hail storm.

The overhang to the north and west has really helped that.

@Andy Despite what that slightly facile portrait pretends, the normal word for pineapple in Spanish is usually piña, not so often ananá(s). Similarly, Portuguese more often uses abacaxi than it does ananás. That said, there does exist some variation in proclivities regarding this choice across the extremely wide Iberophone space.

Q: Does ten year network wide bans involve consultation with other moderators?

Larry HarsonRecently, a certain user posted an answer to a question on here that a moderator commented on: it needed to provide evidence. The answer was updated with links, upon which the moderator gave another warning that evidence needed to be provided. The OP then commented back: "You can go **** yourse...

@ShadowWizard The change turned out to be simple, but the way we got there was lots of internal conversations. We've been happy with the response from users (who just ignore it if they don't need a new job) and customers (who are getting more candidates now).

user315433
Afaik network bans are employee only feature...

6:25 PM

Commenting

user315433
So the duration might depend on how much bs an employee dealt with by that time of the day. I don't know of any published guidelines on this subject. (Perhaps it's internally published)

@Jon jinx

@ShadowWizard a bit less

@DEAD Heh. I guess I should have just followed my gut and let someone else comment. ;-)

6:28 PM
@zaq Or how much of the employee's time they consumed. Every minute correlates with one year I guess.

@JonEricson, since you're here and talking about jobs, I see that SE has another posting for a Product Manager. I confess that I've applied for a PM position at SE more than once and gotten a very nice rejection notice, but with few details. It seems there has been a large amount of turn over in the PM positions recently. What is being looked for in these jobs? I'd like to apply again, but recent rejections make it seem like it'd be a time waster on both my side and SE's.

I'm sure Jon likes backrubs. Take it from there

@Andy This is a sore point for me. Historically we've too picky when it comes to hiring PMs and then we get one, we haven't put them in the position to succeed. (That's heavily edited from what I first typed. ;-) We've taken some steps on the second problem. For one thing, we now have a PM team instead of making them work for individual dev teams.
I think things are getting better, however. At the very least, the problems are more clear.

So you were too picky, but then you got balpha. Got it. :p
(If I get one of those nifty 10 year suspensions, know that it has been a pleasure to know you all)

@Bart Only if you'd pinged him. (I hope he doesn't regularly search for his username. ;-)

6:40 PM
expect Balpha to show up shortly

@Andy I guess the bottom line is: if we don't tell you what to improve, we can't really complain when you re-apply.
(Says the guy who has nothing to do with hiring.)

But you are involved in the process I hope?

I'm sure Jon plays "bad cop"

@JonEricson Good to know. Who ever is looking at the applications knows I've reapplied. It was mentioned in the rejection I received for the PM, Careers position. :)
Soon they are just going to see my name in the email header and sigh loudly while muttering "Again?"

Sighs loudly Again?

6:46 PM

@JonEricson so no more "fix it or be fired!" for new PM? ;-)
@bjb568 exactly!

user315433
@ShadowWizard For this PM position it's more like "fix this broken thing which is coincidentally on fire"...

7:48 PM
@zaq I didn't read it all yet, but I am pretty sure 10 years network suspension is the last resort, taken when the team is 1000% certain that is a lost cause, someone who will never comply with SE rules or become a helpful member. And suspension is better than just deleting the accounts in these cases, as it prevents the offender from joining again, probably including also IP-ban. @Jon how wrong am I in this?

@ShadowWizard I don't think we've fired any PMs. But yeah.

You shot em

@JonEricson of course, I've seen very few in my years here, though there are probably others I've "missed".

user315433
Could be him. Also likely to be the user referred to in that Skeptics meta post.

whoa... 1320 answers...

@ShadowWizard Well, there's an interesting history behind it

user315433
8:02 PM
The second place goes to Andreas Jung (854 SO answers) but at substantial distance from Ron, considering the size of the sites.

@DEAD which is? What I see is a veteran user who got upset with something and became hostile towards SE and the way it works.

@ShadowWizard I was talking about the "something"

@zaq hah, I thought he was no longer active on the network

It's not the normal high-rep rage-quit.

user315433
1320 answers on Physics is over 1% of all answers on the site, the SO equivalent would be a user with 200,000 answers.

8:04 PM
@DEAD do tell then... plz... pretty plz.... :D
@zaq yeah but there's also question of quality, not just quantity. e.g. if 80% of the answers are crap, it doesn't count.
