@DanGrossman++

I'm confused. How do I submit a new proposal at area51? I don't see the link/button...

@ChrisJesterYoung Using the left-hand nav.
@DanGrossman Pick a category first.

Will I be banned from SO for proposing an SE site that'll never be allowed? ;)

@DanGrossman Well, I don't think the proposer of Apocalyptic Defense was banned, so.
@DanGrossman However, if your proposal is something similar to that, it may not be quite so funny the second time around. ;-)

@ChrisJesterYoung Some of them are still sore from it's closure though :D

5:08 AM
@YiJiang I know, me too.

that didn't work right

@RebeccaChernoff What's the oy about this time, now? ;-)

@DanGrossman Yeah, you posted it to the discussion area, instead of the new proposal area
You know, if even some of us are getting confused, then maybe they need to rethink the new UI a bit?

I think Manning needs more books..

5:12 AM
So...how's that meta apple post going? (:

> Silverlight 4 in Action and C# in Depth, Second Edition. Get these two pbooks together for $50. Put both books in your cart, and enter dotd0202cc in the Promotional Code box when you check out.
I definitely did that deal last month :P
Who's writing a Meta Apple post?

@TimStone I'm glad you're helping make Jon Skeet rich, by purchasing that deal again. :-D

Hahah
Actually, speaking of the Apple site... @YiJiang, you mentioned that you thought someone had reported the 404 page being hard to read, do you know if anyone said anything about the chat ads? I find the font colour a bit light, personally.

Welcome to Zombo.com

:D

5:16 AM
hmm, today was a good day apparently
over $1500 in new orders

@DanGrossman CS lecturers will hate you for life.

I know, it'd be awesome.
It'd also lower the quality (or quantity, if students rely on it then fail exams) of all future graduates so that I may be more employable the rest of my life!

Quora

Proposed Q&A site for quora users and other people who have come across Quora.

Currently in defintion.

I have to interview these folks. So, thanks for that.

You'll just give up on hiring new graduates entirely, which means they won't be able to get experience to put on a resume, which means they'll never be hired. Resulting in you hiring me instead.
This proposal is such a win/lose for me/everyone else. Yet it should gain support from the tens of thousands of CS students that want their homework done for them!

@YiJiang Hooray!

A: Apostrophes/single quotes in question titles aren't escaped in code for share buttons

Jarrod DixonOur pesky encoder assumes all js strings are wrapped in " and not my beloved ', causing this issue. A fix will be deployed shortly.

5:32 AM
(:

Hmm, I need a bug-fixer brownie points tally sheet :P

Where can I find a list of all SE sites? Is data.* the only one?

I was totally looking for that post on meta.apple ):

@RebeccaChernoff Thanks

@RebeccaChernoff Ah, your earlier comment makes more sense then. But no, it was a general SE 2.0 issue, so it went to MSO :)

5:35 AM
DBA.SE looks in perilous shape :/

true, but we see EVERYTHING

@DanGrossman It's doing a bit better than Writers

Ugh. Low quality alert. This guy mixed-up landscape and portrait and can't spell "portrait" properly.

Q: problem with displaying button when rotating from landscape to portrait

MaheshBabuhi folks, i am placing a 6 buttons In Interface Builder. i need to support my application to all orientations. my landscape image,I am getting my view in portrait mode like this. But i need like this. I am trying in Interface builder autoresizing but i did n't get. how can i done can any on...

Shame, easy edit and easy answer on a desktop or laptop, not on a phone though.
@TimStone there's a writers SE?

gughg suggested edits, seen from the other side :( I just wanted to correct a typo. Can't do it 'cos it's "not 6 characters". WELL YOU CAN KEEP YOUR TYPO THEN!

5:46 AM
Heh :P

Why is there a limit of three commitments? The problem with this is that some sites just don't get out of commitment phase. Perhaps there should be a limit to the number of betas, not commitments, like this you can help a sit hit beta and then if you have fulfilled your commitment, you can then drop out for another one.

@Moshe You're supposed to preach the site and bring it more committers!

@TimStone That's been reported already I think

@YiJiang Alright, cool
Thanks.

There's a lot of other places where that happens - in the timeline pages, 10k tools etc.

5:56 AM
Ah, gotcha.
@Benjol Whoops, I totally skimmed over that part of the question. Good catch :)

Chinese New Year tomorrow! Yay!

@TimStone, I hesitated whether to do a screenshot with freehand circles :)

Yay for Chinese New Year! :-D

@YiJiang \o/
@Benjol Heheh

It's only two days public holiday here in Singapore
In China it would be an entire week

6:00 AM
@YiJiang 恭喜發財!
(I can't actually type Chinese. I just cut and pasted that from Wikipedia. But I can read some Chinese.)

@YiJiang I wonder if there's an Unicode code point for that.
:-D

@ChrisJesterYoung The Chinese character is there, but I don't think there's an upside down version of that
(The 福 character is typically hung upside down)

@YiJiang Yes, it's a pun wishing for fortune to arrive.
@YiJiang In fact, I'd find it odd to see it not upside-down.

@ChrisJesterYoung Well, there's nothing wrong typing it out like that...

6:08 AM
@YiJiang What, you mean as "upside-down 福" rather than its upside-down character? :-)

6:32 AM
anybody with 10k rep on SO ... go to stackoverflow.com
you now have access to the pending edit queue

Uhm...

also visible in stackoverflow.com/review
no pending edits ... 10k rep users are all over them now
also ... when you approve a pending edit the person submitting it get 2 rep
2

@waffles points at image above, louder this time Um.......
Ah, I caught a glimpse of the magnificent pending suggested edits <del>beast</del> notification bubble. You know, if it's going to be empty most of the time, then at least remove the extra separator there, no?

true true ... that is a bug

6:45 AM
@YiJiang, just take away the maple syrup until waffles fixes it. (:

7:08 AM
you snowed in, Rebecca?

I just ran the snowblower at 12:30 AM

No, dammit.
we got 2" of sleet and then NOTHING
ok, not nothing. maybe 1" of snow in the last 8 hours.

7:29 AM
@MarcGravell Figured you would, heheh :)
Hm, sounds like it's raining pretty hard outside, boo.

@Tim how did you notice that so quickly?

is confused

@MarcGravell Magic...in the form of the StackExchange™ MultiCollider SuperDropdown™

we should keep moving this conversation between location to utterly confuse the bystanders ;p

Mwuahaha. ;)

7:35 AM
I do not approve of these activities. ):

if I switch between my various different spikes and give you some bcc would that help?

@RebeccaChernoff Secret!

I went looking. (:

Ah, good stuff. :)
Is there a pending edit on this question, or can I not suggest edits on something that was migrated?

7:43 AM
what makes you think there is a pending edit?

must've just been accepted, I see the last edit as done by someone with 130 rep?

@MarcGravell The pending edit blocks my seeing the edit/retag links.
@RebeccaChernoff Ah, yep.

But you didn't see edit (1) ?

Nope.

Hrm, I thought that's what it did.

7:48 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Yeah, I'm not sure. The only other time I've come across a pending edit was on SO, where I can review it, so I obviously do get that link there.

Ah, right. I forget the rep limit.
and suggested edits are blocking...so I guess that kind makes sense. But it didn't give you any indication other than just missing links?

Aye. Nope, the links just disappear. Someone actually asked a question related to this, because they thought they lost their ability to retag, heh.

is putting together the puzzle (;

4
Q: People between 500 and 2000 reputation lost the ability to retag questions

Stas KurilinSome time before I could retag questions and could not edit messages. Now I can edit mesages and tags (edits needs review. So I have lost the privilege to retag question without review. Is this bug or feature?

@RebeccaChernoff I suggest starting with the edge pieces

7:55 AM
Heh, I think there were a few questions about comment formatting...
Definitely nice that the help information is so accessible now.

:o

No details though, so I won't hold my breathe

"Chromeless"?

Is it me or is Jeff's edit here just a tinny weeny bit over the top? meta.stackoverflow.com/posts/77416/revisions

@YiJiang Is that the post about the PRIMARY ELECTION?

8:13 AM
@TimStone It probably is about the PRIMARY bit of the ELECTION, yes

@RebeccaChernoff The browser-y bits are the "chrome", and it gets rid of those.

@RebeccaChernoff The UI of the browser itself is called Chrome. Google wanted Chrome (the browser) to get rid of as much as possible the browser chrome (the UI), so they named it that

I just meant Chromeless sounds funny to me. shrugs

@RebeccaChernoff Ah, yes..

8:40 AM
Alright, my brain has officially stopped working, if it ever worked in the first place...time to pass out for a bit.

@TimStone how old is that?

@Benjol The help link? Just went out a bit ago

@TimStone, it's not bad, but the line return in the middle of the link markup may confuse some.

I should have reached that point hours ago. It is way too easy for me to stay up |:
...and simply saying that has made me tired, oy.

9:10 AM
stars George's message to keep those two messages from Rebecca close together

9:32 AM
:eats blueberry pie:

You get frustrated when software doesn't always behave as you expect it to.
(spent my day fixing IE JavaScript / CSS issues)

10:23 AM
:waits an hour for Amazon to spin up an RDS instance...:

10:47 AM

10:59 AM
Grr... fingers slipped and I upvoted a comment I wanted to flag. I know that it's rare enough that the [feature-req] for removing comment upvotes will never go through, but it's still hugely annoying and frustrating when this happens

@Yi, downgrade to smaller fingers :)

@Benjol Fat fingers, yeah. That's the technical term for this sort of thing, isn't it :D

@YiJiang, any new changes in the pipes for your elections page? :)

Considering another reworking of the API wrapper, though there won't be any difference to the user, of course

I'm waiting eagerly to see if my magic ordering will yield the real result :)

11:04 AM
There's a pseudo link to per-site results idea which is interesting
But it could also be problematic, eh

Are you adding the sites by hand?

@Benjol Yes, but I've seen the list, so I might want to automate the process

judging by the blog, you'll have a bit of work keeping up with that!

Mmmhmm... S[OFU] elections end in 10 hours
2

what happened to the 'top10' icon?
oh, no, I see ...

11:07 AM
Gone when the election moves to the election stage
No point in showing it when you only show the top 10 anyway

11:18 AM
The top 10 button will return thanks to Gaming
yknow, just because primaries are SO only stuff =)
so I wonder how easy to use websockets are
@YiJiang did you toy with them?

@badp JavaScript websockets? Nope. Ivo in the JavaScript room might have, go ask him (he's not there now though)

Q: We're discouraged from fixing typos and misspellings on SE sites?

ravenI just attempted to fix a typo on a question on cooking.stackexchange.com and saw this Oops! Your edit couldn't be submitted because: Your edit summary must be at least 10 characters This edit is less than 6 characters; surely more can be improved with your edit? So, misspelled words have to...

All of this because of rep-for-edits. The hallmark of a bad idea is that it ends up needing other bad ideas to support it...

Having dumplings for Chinese New Year! They're so cute.
Jiǎozi 餃子 or 饺子 (Chinese transliteration), gyōza (Japanese transliteration), Mo:Mo: or Momocha म:म: or ममचा (Nepali transliteration), or pot sticker is a Chinese dumpling widely spread to Japan, Eastern and Western Asia. Jiaozi typically consist of a ground meat and/or vegetable filling wrapped into a thinly rolled piece of dough, which is then sealed by pressing the edges together or by crimping. Jiaozi should not be confused with wonton: jiaozi have a thicker, chewier skin and a flatter, more oblate, double-saucer like shape (similar in shape to ravioli), and are usually eaten wit...

Wow, Pekka, easy come, easy go - just flew in and flew right back out again ;)

11:46 AM
@Benjol It is said that if do a @mention at exactly the right time, you can catch the coming and going of the Pekkabird. Alternatively, shout loudly for him until he notices.

12:00 PM
@YiJiang you want to update your reputation prettifier. 16 = rep from edits

@badp Awww...

@badp That is very sad and unfortunate.
@badp I wonder why that is. Not enough traffic? Chinese government censorship?

failed under it's own popularity?

@ChrisJesterYoung Honestly, I don't know. It probably wasn't used and there was no easy way to "upgrade" to OSQA.

@badp Yeah, Googling didn't come up with any useful info either.

12:31 PM
@badp Honestly, looking at OSQA's UI it really doesn't look like an upgrade

@YiJiang It's better than Shapado's.

@badp Don't even mention it

Have mathoverflow decided where they're going next?

Hi! :)

HELP!
Can anyone here load digitalfruition.com ?
Can anyone here load digitalfruition.com ?
hm, I am getting timeouts in chat, I am hoping the issue is on my end...

12:40 PM

whew, thanks, my local net connection mys be suffering, I can't get to any of our servers!

12:52 PM
ok well that's really odd

Q: Continuity of Moderation

Robert CartainoIt has long been established that moderation is a volunteer activity; they can come and go as they please. Life happens and sometimes work and family take precedence. But there are a limited number of moderators and, if moderators are not "moderating", the site can suffer. What should be our poli...

@badp, more trouble at t'mill? :)

@badp Wasn't there the case of TheTXI?

@Benjol no idea

@YiJiang, was he a mod?
@badp, I'll let you go and check recent activity :)

12:57 PM

Well my ISP's network status page doesn't list any outages outer than some planned maintenance for having a squirrel chew a feeder, LOL...
Very frustrating

Kev
@YiJiang - I hate to dig up an old skeleton, but perhaps if TheTXI hadn't been leaking flagging info to non-mods he may well still have been active.

@Kev Was he? I joined well after whenever he was active and didn't see any Meta posts on that

@Fosco you're on the same side of the country as I am, could you do me a favor? Let me know if digitalfruition.com lads for you?

@TheRenamedException I'm in the same town, and it loads for me. :-P

1:05 PM
@TheRenamedException Yes it loads just fine.

@ChrisJesterYoung You must not have TWC :-)

@TheRenamedException I'm in the UK and works fine for me too.

@TheRenamedException I am on TWC RoadRunner.

Thanks, that's very helpful

Kev
@YiJiang - It wasn't made public, and it was something that affected me at the time. I've kept quiet about it, but it's water under the bridge and I only mention as a lesson to whoever gets elected as a moderator this year.

1:06 PM
I see my HOSTS file virus is working successfully...

@ChrisJesterYoung huh. My traceroutes don't get past a Level3 router in Chicago...

@Kev ...maybe you? ;-) (I've voted for you, BTW.)

but...leaking flagging info to non-mods? there's not much interest in that, is there?

Kev
@ChrisJesterYoung - thanks chris :)
@tombull89 - well there is if the flags are supposed to be anonymous

I didn't think even moderators knew who'd flagged.

Kev
1:09 PM
@tombull89 - don't know whether it's still the same now, but back then, flags where you typed in your complaint revealed the account of the user raising the flag.

ah, ok. Not that it worries me of course, just still interesting to know.

@ChrisJesterYoung AH HA, thanks!!!!
It's actually a router at my datacenter that's blocking me!
hop 13 is the last one I see

Kev
@tombull89 - moderators shouldn't be doing "oh look, guess who flagged your post" to their IRC buddies.

@TheRenamedException Haha, fail. Why is it targeting you?

1:11 PM
@ChrisJesterYoung I have no idea, but, not at least I know who to call :-)

@TheRenamedException :-D

@Kev can understand that now.

Kev
@tombull89 - anyway water under the bridge. I wouldn't have a problem with him coming back provided he'd learned that lesson. He was otherwise not a bad mod, even though it ticked me off at the time.

yeah he seemed to gain rep fast and has a lot of good answers. Last june he was active so we'll have to see.
also, ponies.

Kev
@tombull89 - aye, ponies. :/

1:16 PM
@Kev ...you don't care for them, I gather?

@Kev, sorry only recently found the Memes of Meta thread.

Kev
@ChrisJesterYoung - not in the way that perhaps he did ;) O_o

@Kev Hahaha. :-P

Kev
@ChrisJesterYoung - where in NZ you from?
@ChrisJesterYoung - my wee bro lives on Stuart Island down the bottom of South Island

LOL
> "Vision of the Tampa Bay Lightning." Tip to PR folks: Don't release images that have been screen-captured and the text is being selected.

1:20 PM
@TheRenamedException I'll rename you.

Poking around with NewGRF trams in OpenTTD

@YiJiang My, My. Was a big fan of OpenTTD but got sucked into Minecraft last summer.

@Nyuszika7H no, thanks, Zypher already did and I just got my name back, thanks anyway!
@ChrisJesterYoung it was my datacenter, they blocked me for SSH brute force attacks!

@TheRenamedException Hey, never got to ask what was that about

@TheRenamedException OK. Hi, Josh! :)

1:25 PM
@YiJiang wat was what about? :-)

@Kev I've never been to Stewart Island, I hear it's gorgeous. :-) I lived in Auckland.

@TheRenamedException You getting suspended from chat by Zypher

Jan 7 at 4:09, by Zypher
@TheNeedsMoarJqueryException also when chat re-syncs with meta your username will be shorter ... i ... couldn't ... stand ... it

@TheRenamedException Bwahahaha, fail for the brute force attacks. :-P

I am guessing (hoping?) that what triggered that was my local nagios system
but it's never triggered that before in 5+ years

1:27 PM
Hmmm.

Either that or Rebecca hacked me again

@TheRenamedException She would never do that! She is shocked that you'd even think that!

Kev
@ChrisJesterYoung - aye it's very nice. I was over for a couple of months but sadly only changed planes in Auckland (for Christchurch).

@Kev It's fine, you didn't miss anything of note. ;-P

@ChrisJesterYoung You're right, she'd only ever hack my garbage disposal...

1:31 PM
@TheRenamedException Fancy. :-P

@The I'm going to distract you… :P

@Nyuszika7H I consider myself distracted :-)
Not enough people use their About Me section for status updates!

Q: Individual Status field for chat

The Renamed ExceptionI absolutely love chat and want to extend a huge thanks and token of appreciation, respect and awe-of-coding skill to Balpha, Marc Gravell, and the rest of the team who built it (sorry I don't know the names of everyone who was involved!!) I look forward to seeing chat launch on StackOverflow, a...

@TheRenamedException I use my about.me which links to my Twitter. :-P

@TheRenamedException don't you mind that you're @Josh on all other SE sites? :)

status-bydesign

1:36 PM
status-byjosh

@Nyuszika7H Don't you know, it's a metard thing to use a different username on meta than everywhere else!

I try to be, um, what's the word... professional on other SE sites ;)
But in here it's a fee-for-all :-D

@Nyuszika7H (Metard, n.: Portmanteau of meta and /b/tard.)

So do people that make edits get +2 now? Or is it just those under 2K whose edits are approved?

@TheRenamedException what? oh lord, with my activity I'll go bankrupt!
@GeorgeStocker It's just under 2kers I'm afraid

1:38 PM
@badp It's also capped at 1000 reps gained this way

@YiJiang 500 edits is a shitton of edits.

@badp ...and yet not enough for Copy Editor badge.

@badp Yup. You'd be half way to getting actual edit privs by then

But you CAN'T CORRECT TYPOS!!!
15
Q: We're discouraged from fixing typos and misspellings on SE sites?

ravenI just attempted to fix a typo on a question on cooking.stackexchange.com and saw this Oops! Your edit couldn't be submitted because: Your edit summary must be at least 10 characters This edit is less than 6 characters; surely more can be improved with your edit? So, misspelled words have to...

@badp I think that's somewhat crappy, I hope they plan on implementing something for people who make good edits above 2K.
And yes, I'm very biased in this arena. :-)

1:40 PM
@GeorgeStocker I hope they don't, because that means 2kers' edits need review too :)

@Benjol Not single typos - you're going to have to correct quite a few of them

@GeorgeStocker, I'd say the opposite, I think no-one should get rep, it would make sooo many things simpler... for a start, >2k would be able to approve without a second opinion

@Benjol You can't correct only typos, unless there's a lot of them. Generally if you really want to see 'lose' instead of 'loose', then start rewriting the post. :-)

or correct a typo and add a link.

@Benjol Editing is a valuable endeavor, and is often the difference between a question asker getting an answer or getting downvoted; to not reward it is silly.

1:41 PM
btw does anybody want to help me with starred-flag.tumblr.com ? :P

@GeorgeStocker I just wanted to correct thread to threat today. annoyed me no end.

@GeorgeStocker Speaking of "valuable", I wish they changed all instances of "valuable flairtm" to "valuable flair™". </pet-peeve>

@badp I can get you a better theme (I think - does tumblr allow you to use your own CSS?)

I was about to compliment the theme....

@YiJiang it has a template engine, you can somewhat define the structure and have full control of the style
but if you want to do finer stuff like better handling of source links, you can't (easily) :|
brb

1:44 PM
@Fosco Diavlo isn't the best fit here, and the tagline/subtitle is sitting far too close to the title for comfort
Also, the positioning of the elements doesn't... feel right

I did notice the title/tagline issue..

Maybe tumblr isn't the right way of doing this
Anyone wants to host a custom Wordpress installation? ;)
Anyway, I strongly disagree with the use of Diavlo there

Diavlo?

Ah, I'm mistaken, it isn't Diavlo - it certainly looks like it, hrm...
Yes, Diavlo slants to the right, this particular font is from Google's font API collection
Anyway, lemme see if I can get a better theme working here

2:00 PM
@YiJiang Diavlo?

I don't know why .chat ul li has Lucida, I'll fix that.
Ugh, that's not it at all :)

@badp My memory sucks, must have been another one, something very similar, the k glyph to be specific

Someone should start a type geek SE. :-)
Then typography geeks can identify typefaces for you.

@YiJiang less Lucida, less small caps, more Georgia

2:05 PM
And typology geeks can identify your personality type for you. :-P

@ChrisJesterYoung You've seen What the Font before?
@badp More Georgia! \o/

@YiJiang Fancy.

but yes, Yanone and Georgia don't mix well together

Right, Qlassik was what I was looking for
Yanone is even tighter than that, but I don't tend to recall letter widths well
@badp How much control over the HTML does tumblr give? Because as of now, the format doesn't seem terribly fitting for archiving chat messages

2:13 PM
#<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

	<link rel="Shortcut Icon" type="image/png" href="{Favicon}" />

Wordpress with custom fields would still work better

so yes, while you can control a lot you can't control everything

Oh, and Firefox's reporting the jQuery not found error for this line:
var jQis = jQuery.noConflict();
jQis(function($){

@YiJiang same on Chromium obviously
Tumblr has some very nice themes like this, but they don't work too well for mostly textual stuff

@badp I noticed, yes

2:19 PM
I adapted this one

2:38 PM
Morning.

2:59 PM
Shalom @Moshe

The situation in Egypt seemst o be getting worse. Tahrir square is going to turn into. A bloodbath. Ugh.

@Moshe yeah :-(

@Moshe There's a channel on my cable TV that's relaying live images from there

@Moshe Hi! I've updated my answer on AskDifferent.

@Yij what do you see?

3:01 PM
@Moshe The two camps of people running into each other, the text scrolling down the bottom reporting the army firing into the air

Think about it like this: the people are not going home peacefully. One group will kill the other or the army will.

@Moshe Tab to autocomplete.

I'm wondering where Mr. Mubarak's supporters were two days ago?

If the Egyptian army is so powerful, why are they firing shots in the air? Kill the side you disagree with and move on. It's not like theyre purporting to be a democracy. Besides, it doesn't need to be a killing. Just get the army between he two sides and push them back.
