4:00 PM
@Moshe if I find this is possible after doing these digests I will shoot myself!

Thank you for teaching these new mods a valuable lesson about the free press, @Josh.

@PopularDemand LOL

@Josh I'm only 80% joking.

@Josh - Actually, perhaps I do want to help.

@Moshe Sure, sorry, my boss is talking to me also :-)

4:05 PM
@Josh Ok, np.

@Moshe you have write access, want to post answers toI'vo's quesion?
or should I handle that one?

Where?
Link me please.

sec
I'll get this one

got it
how do I do this?
Ah, I see

let me make sure I got them all for this question @Moshe

4:09 PM
I think you missed the last one, not sure
@IvoFlipse Have had access to the tools for 10k, so I know their ropes. Still have to get to learn the ropes of the mod tools. But if I'm not sure, I won't hit it and instead ask it first.

@Moshe I think that's another question

ok
true

this can be so confusing!

which one is next?
Yep
This calls for some feature requests, like colored reply arrows or something

@Moshe I like it!

4:11 PM
Ok, next
I'm not sure what the next one is, ugh

@Moshe next question is:
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 34 mins ago, by Ivo Flipse
If it takes some learning, wouldn't it be wiser to first gain access to the tools at hand before jumping in for the real deal?

Ah, wasn't sure

just paste into the room: http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/439125#439125

You two might want to hold off a few minutes until DMA can catch up

DMA?

4:12 PM
@MichaelMrozek I said I would post all his answers at the end

@Moshe One of the mod candidates; he was late

Ah
Well, Yay, I posted the question. Now for the answers.

@Moshe I normally do a bold And the answers were:
just for readability

ok

@Josh sounds like a good idea, do you require my answers posted here for "historic" questions to be able to draw them out?
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 22 mins ago, by Josh
@DMA57361 I can quote all of your answers to the questions in a final group in the digest, if you prefer

4:16 PM
@Josh -- what do you do with this and the next one?
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 36 mins ago, by nhinkle
Also, I think I'm ready to become a moderator because the great and all-knowing ;) @IvoFlipse thinks I am:

@Moshe I quoted that one to an earlier question, possibly in error
I am working on the next question now, Random's question:

alright, I'll leave it out then.
Hang on
there's one more

in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 36 mins ago, by random
There's an iffy tag on a couple dozen questions. Another tag is close in meaning to it. Both suck though. How do you handle the tags and/or the questions? Merge? Delete? Close? Ask Meta.SU?
@Moshe sure, I'll post after you're done

FFS XP, DO NOT CRASH. It's pretty easy when you think about it. Also: I think Skype has some issues with partial tunnel VPNs

@Josh - what do you do with this interjection?
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 39 mins ago, by Ivo Flipse
@studiohack, but when it comes out of your mouth, there's clear 'evidence' that you already know how to use the tools (the same applies to several other candidates as well)
There's a follow up answer

4:18 PM
@Moshe did everyone answer of just studiohack?

It was directed at him, so just him

if everyone answered I normally post Ivo clarified his question:
and then And the candidates replied:
@Moshe in that case I consider it external
unless you feel it really clarifies

No, but you could theoretically post that for just him
Nah
It's certainly relevant

Yeah, use your best judgement, if h clearly misunderstood the question, then post it
We want to help the candidates... but fairly :-)

ok, skip it, final answer
your turn

4:22 PM
...looking for randolph's answer...

Erm @Josh, not sure about that next answer...
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 40 mins ago, by Randolph Potter
It's like SQL Server - where "it depends" is the standard answer - what we're anticipating is people with the right skills to assess a situation on its merits, talk to others to discuss, and act on the consensus
It's that, but he didn't "reply".

ah, thanks!
You want the next one?

in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 40 mins ago, by Randolph Potter
sometimes we have to act on our own instrincts, without community interaction (for what, I don't know necessarily), but then that's where being responsible for your actions comes in
You forgot that too
I think it's also relevant

in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 36 mins ago, by Rebecca Chernoff
How much time do you think you'll spend modding?
@Moshe thanks, added

Oh, just for laughs, look at this, don't think it belongs
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 39 mins ago, by nhinkle
now for the true test: how fast can @DMA57361 read everything above and respond to every question? :P

4:25 PM
LOL
I saw that. But yeah it's NARQ ;-)
In the SO digest I stupidly posted a question from @Pekka which was a joke simpson's reference, LOL

Sathya jokes:
Can I puleez post that?

Yeah I think skip that one, and post his real answer
Ok, sure :-)

Ok

as long as we post the real one right after :-D
I'll start gathering for @MichaelMrozek's question
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 33 mins ago, by Michael Mrozek
A diamond will be attached to everything you say, including questions, answers and comments. Everything you will do will be seen under a different light. How do you feel about that? (-- badp )
LOL!
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 33 mins ago, by Lord Torgamus
@Sathya Was that a typo, or did you intend to say that you are impatient?

I think this may be relevant
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 40 mins ago, by Randolph Potter
@RebeccaChernoff Do you have stats for the time we've spent on the site, as a matter of interest?

4:30 PM
Oopsies @Sathya :-D

@Josh?

@Moshe Let me see... seems a bit ancillary to me, but

Ok skipped

Does she even respond anywhere?

Boss asks coworker "if your HD was lost today and the hosting server exploded, where's your working bit of code? would you be totally screwed?" coworker "no, it's mostly all checked into kiln" boss: "ok good, I hadn't been checking" (side-note: coworker is only PHP dev in org atm, besides that the boss and I read PHP fairly well) coworker: "except none of the images are in kiln" me: /facepalm

4:31 PM
just like her to ignore people ;-)

@Josh :) there's a further note down :)

in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 41 mins ago, by nhinkle
(basically, the only days I'm not on SU at all are days when I literally have no internet access, like when I'm on vacation camping in the middle of nowhere. and then I think to myself, "dang, now I don't get that fanatic badge!")

(ps: some questions are still being fired :P ) @JarrodDixon

@Sathya thanks, we'll be sure to include it

Not the original answer, but relevant?
@Josh - I think you're up now.

4:33 PM
@Sathya I personally intend to stop the digest at 11:00 am in the transcript ;-)
@Moshe thanks!

oh hang on @Josh

in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 36 mins ago, by Sathya
@LordTorgamus Wasn't a typo. I'm not impatient. My intent was that having a Diamond against me won't make me became impatient.

I'm sure everyone has seen this already: reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/fbvkx/…

can't find it, go on, @Josh

@Josh ;) wasn't about the digest, just incase if you wanted to ask anything

4:35 PM
@Sathya you said "I'm sure few can attest to my patience" :-/

@Sathya I reread the original comment and I still don't see how it could be interpreted to mean that.

like, "not very many can"
instead of "a few", as in, "at least a few can attest"

@Josh - this needs to go in under the last question if possible, ugh, I missed it before
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 43 mins ago, by Linker3000
@RebeccaChernoff Depends what I am doing elsewhere - family and work take priority - in that order wherever possible!

@Moshe ah, ok, in one moment...
after I close this question from @MichaelMrozek, post and say that belonged to @RebeccaChernoff's question

Ok, then I get to do the 4chan question, Yay!

4:37 PM
@Josh I did not intend it to be read in that context

@Sathya I know
Ok @Moshe, you can post the correction, and the next question

Heh, they want to cut down on salt to use it for the storms...
@Josh bold

thanks @Moshe
this is not as easy as it looks huh? :-D

I obviously will include

@RebeccaChernoff Final thought: best wishes to everyone. And yes, actions of most active users are noted by all :) Diamonds and users alike

4:44 PM
@Josh :) combine both

as you wish! :-)

btw, @Josh @DMA57361 is replying to the questions posed during the town hall

@Josh - Is this serious? (And I asked the next one)

@Sathya thanks, I'm going to post all of his at the end

4:45 PM
@Moshe it was meant as a humorous reply (btw - do check out the blog)

@Sathya Ok, won't post it. Already did click the link

@Moshe yeah I think it's humerous, but, we included other humeros replies so it might as well go in
oh, ok, or we can skip :-)

Whatever, i don't think it fair to make Sathya look like a clown.

I wish I got that one question
you totally know what the correct answer is, and so do I

@Moshe agreed :-)

4:48 PM
@Josh - You're up

@Moshe you handling your own question while I grab DMA's answers?

Ok

@Moshe it would actually be easier for me if you do it, since you can use your "my replies" feature :-D

@Josh How so?
I'll skim through, it takes 3 minutes

ok cool
@Moshe replies to you light up :-)

4:50 PM
I see that, right

@Josh I"m done with that one
in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 52 mins ago, by Rebecca Chernoff
Alright, that brings us to the top of the hour, so let's let the candidates finish up answering, and then we can get a quick final thought from each candidate.

@Moshe coo, thanks. I think the final one was the "final thoughts", which, I have all collected
before I post that I want to include all DMA's answers
I have a text file ready to copy and paste
thank you so much for your help @Moshe!

I advise you to put them in place if possible. To keep it fair.
@Josh np
@Josh - whoops

@Moshe I wish I could, but I don't think I can?

4:57 PM
The last one that made it in might have been a joke
@Josh - If you're the mod, can you edit past two minutes?

@Moshe I can migrate, but I think it's better if you flag it and ask for it to be deleted

You know what, forget that. He came late, so put it at the end. It might be unfairly helping him.

@RebeccaChernoff can clean up for you

Okay
So We're almost done.

yup, just waiting for DMA's final aswers
I'll start posting those now

4:59 PM
@Josh - Okay, should I make a closing statement "handing the mike" over to you?

sorry, just posted it myself :-)

Guess not.
hehe

sorr, I didn't read fast enough :-)

np
@Josh, what is that whole discussion there?
bbiab /me afk

@Moshe I'm reposting questions and then posting DMA's answers

5:01 PM
kk
*really afk*

@Josh Is the digest room supposed to be associated with SU? It's on MSO right now

@MichaelMrozek I will fix that... somehow...

I don't think room owners can change it, but I'll move it

Thank you!
damn you, rate limiter!

This will come in handy:

5:15 PM
@Josh Hey.. just fyi I haven't received it yet.. not impatient just mentioning it.

@Fosco He has been in meetings all morning :-/

not a problem :)

@MichaelMrozek lol
also, who is this "rchern" character?

whew
Thanks again @RebeccaChernoff for your hard work on the Town Hall!
Now, I go get lunch

Who does PHP?

5:24 PM
@drachenstern I do, but, after I eat lunch ;-)

bah
so the question is: "When is it appropriate to use a buffer in PHP"

All this talk about digesting makes my stomach growl!
before I go, thanks again @Moshe!

@drachenstern Um...whenever something needs to be buffered?

@Josh - NP.

5:25 PM
any desire to help finish the SO digest? ;-)

@Josh Not this moment, but possibly.

LOL

as opposed to response.write or echo or something like that

@Josh No seriously, I have to take care of some stuff here.
My first selected answer in 16 answers

@drachenstern Ah, output buffering?

5:26 PM
And, I typed it all on my iPhone

A: Canceling a modal view & app crashes

MosheAn advisable way to handle modal view controllers is to us notifications to inform the class that presented it to release it. Generally, you use code similar to this to show a modal view. SomeClass *yourViewController = [[SomeClass alloc] initWithNibName:@"SomeClass" bundle:nil]; [self presentMo...

something like that, yes
ob_start ob_end ob_flush
coworker with questions

Basically, whenever. The issue is that every ob_start needs an ob_end. So, if it's broken up across pages, it can be a headache.
The rule of thumb is whenever you don't want to send partial content to the browser, for whatever reason.

Yeah, I think he was reading code related to templating and was curious if he needed to consider using it for his code as well, as I understand what's the convo so far
I think we figgerred it out
this might also be useful to our quest:

Q: Why use output buffering in PHP?

amnI have read quite a bit of material on Internet where different authors suggest using output buffering. The funny thing is that most authors argument for its use only because it allows for mixing response headers with actual content. Frankly, I think that responsible web applications should not m...

Sometimes, you could flush the output buffer... start a new buffer, execute some shell commands, get the buffer, process the output, and then discard the buffer before continuing.

Yeah, I was trying to explain that concept to him but didn't want to overload him
Also, annoying bug recrop :( ... go away you stupid boolean misparse!

5:36 PM
I just saved a low quality question, and answered, and suggested jQuery. Win!
0
A: An alternative to the ancient "marquee" tag?

MosheThe "marquee" tag was removed from the standard because it's a "visual" tag, not a "semantic" tag. As such, none of the languages that you want have an exact equivalent. I suggest using Javascript to do animations on your webpage. (I hear that jQuery is a great framework to get started with.)

somedays I just wish I could rebuild my code from scratch doing what is right instead of fixing old busted code that sadly doesn't have any inherent knowledge (which is usually the reason to avoid a full rewrite)
@Moshe NICE

@Moshe lol nice

@drachenstern Thank you. I'm up to 191 answers now. Starting to look presentable.
@GeorgeMarian Thanks.
Pikachu, come back! voting ring - finish 'em off!

WinMerge #Activate

I'm trying to write the jQuery for that guy, it should be simple.
To do jQuery marquee animation that loops, you will want to use something like this:

    function animateMarquee(){
      $('marquee').animate(
        //animate, then call this function again to loop
      );
    }

5:44 PM
@Moshe why? It's already been done

@drachenstern I wanted to post it in the answer.
Where would I find that?

Ah, ok
Great!
@drachenstern Mind if I link those?

I have no problem with it, I'm not interested in doing marquees on ASP.NET in jQuery, but if I was, I would've turned to the plugins.jquery.com link initially ;)

Ah, ok.
thanks

5:46 PM
@Moshe also note: I'm not affiliated with those at all
you must be on iOS atm @Moshe

np
@drachenstern No I'm actually not, why?

oh, nm, see the linkbacks

Ah, yea, I see.

@Moshe hadn't noticed those, just kept seeing the @drachenstern at the beginning /facepalm

Do people who "/facepalm" often develop a hand mark on their face over time?
:-)

5:50 PM
@Moshe I end up with a lot of fingerprints on my glasses.

> I am being told this cannot be done but there must be some kind of dirty, hackerish way to do it.

Q: How do you create a half solid, half semi transparent gradient background image with cross browser support?

RickI have a div, and I would create a background for it in the in the following manner. The top half must be a solid colour, and the bottom half a semi transparent colour? How do I go about creating this? making it work in all the major browsers? without splitting up the div into two separate ones....

@Moshe assuming you mean IE6 included for cross-browser support you can't. Unless you do amazing things with image manipulation on the backend AND figure out how to get IE6 to always support transparency

@drachenstern Not my question, just throwing it out there.

@Moshe I understand. Just making a point.

@drachenstern Fair enough.
