I have to give up on the Digest for today. If anyone wants to take over, let me know soon
Ok, I gotta run, catch everyone later

1:14 AM
Does anybody know whether if I edit my question if I will have to wait longer for assign it a bounty?

Hmm. Apparently I imagined a json chat route. I've been foiled!

@RebeccaChernoff Just sneak one in. I won't tell.

@Trufa I don't think that an edit has any impact on when you can set the bounty.

So, my jsfiddle idea for the thc filtering won't work.

@GeorgeStocker Yeah, I considered trying to write something to pull out the conversation in true Q&A format, but I figured most people wouldn't use the explicit reply functionality, so at that point it's more of an exercise in futility, heh. Still, for those of us who were present, I thought it was really quite valuable, a lot of good responses :)

I was doing an array: [questionId][userId] = id of response. I'm...not really sure what I thought I was going to do cross-domain with that though. Ummmmm yeah.

Hmm

slight oops rofl

Well, I guess the messages are static enough, you could always run the array locally and pull the texts in the console, then copy+paste :P

2:02 AM
so quiet...

@RebeccaChernoff Layin' down the law, hahah. ;)

I KNOW NOT WHAT YOU SPEAK OF

2:20 AM
I'm feeling major burnout, now what?

AAUGH

@mootinator huh?

@Moshe: @mootinator failed to answer what the airflight velocity of an unladen swallow is.

@ChrisJesterYoung oh

2:37 AM
I hope I wake up in time for the SUTHC tomorrow morning. >_<

"THC" makes me think of cannabis.

@RebeccaChernoff SUTHC?

@ChrisJesterYoung, you're not the top user on CodeGolf? SLACKER
@Moshe Super User Town Hall Chat

But but but...I have a full-time job! :-O

2:42 AM
Ah
@RebeccaChernoff - I'm a bit burnt out, what do you suggest?
I have vacation until tomorrow night.

I can't write a post without changing my mind about it four times.

@Moshe Why are you burnt out?
@mootinator What post is that?

@TimStone It's on meta.codegolf

Ah ha

@mootinator: I read it.
Thanks for your input!
@mootinator Lemme know if I need to refresh. :-)

2:57 AM
@ChrisJesterYoung I think I'm done with it ;)

@mootinator :-)

3:12 AM
@mootinator: Re "automated testing/automatic scoring" site, one already exists, called Anarchy Golf. It has issues, and those issues do prevent me from using it more, but if someone (maybe me) maybe hacks up something like Shapado or OSQA with some Anarchy Golf features, that could be neat. :-D
Oh, and BTW....

3:29 AM
@Moshe huh?

3:42 AM
@RebeccaChernoff & @TimStone - I'm on Vacation from school but I spent too much time working on some tech support problems.
I was supposed to be helping s/o set up a VM inside of Ubuntu server so we could get Quickbooks running but we called the former techie for a Windows CD (mine are in school). She came down and we sat there watching for an hour.
@TimStone I am not sure why I'm burnt out. Perhaps it is that incident, or the fact that I finished the basic release of my game and I need something to move on to.
Listening to beethoven.
While fixing Windows XP.
Ugh
Windows XP.

Jin
3:58 AM
good evening

have you recovered from apple css-s-s-s-ing? (:

@Moshe Hey, it's a step up from Vista, right? ;-)

Jin
@RebeccaChernoff no.. i'm still css-s-s-s-ing. Apple = Evil
3

@Jin Truer words have never been spoken

Jin
btw i forgot who mentioned it.. about the image uploader popup not looking Apple..
but anyway, i fixed it.

4:03 AM
nice

Jin
i had to write some pretty nasty sibling/child selectors for that one lil box. so nasty it may as well be called incest selectors
4

@Jin APPLE IS NOT EVIL!!!

Jin
@Moshe are you the one who flagged it? lol. i was j/k. i told my soul to Apple long ago..

I'M CURRENTLY FIXING AN XP MACHINE AFTER A DAY OF MSFAIL. DO NOT, I SAY DO NOT INSULT A STABLE MACHINE ON A DAY LIKE TODAY.

4:07 AM
@Moshe for 10 years, the biggest source for my stress(and I don't get stressed easily) has been doing tech support for my mom over the phone. That ended last year, when I bought her an iMac.
2

Man, this still cracks me up.

@Jin I wish i could afford to buy everyone Macs. Really. I would.

I HATE the WINDOWS REGISTRY!

@Jin Ahahaha

4:08 AM
@RebeccaChernoff It was to be expected eventually.

It's so ridiculous though!

This computer belongs to an author, do I suggest a Mac?

@Moshe Oh no you don't, you get to explain why it's worthy of hate.

@ChrisJesterYoung Oh, well On me left is a dying iPod, meh. But on my right is hours of frustration over a missing "Registry Hive or log or alternate."
What the is a a "registry alternate"?!
plugs in macbook

@RebeccaChernoff Thinking about it, it would be 100 times better if someone asked that on SU/WA :P

4:12 AM
oy

@TimStone I'm tempted to make a sockpuppet account for that.
chkdsk is 63% done in stage X of Y where Y is unknown. Wonderful!

@Moshe I can only imagine the great speed with which @RebeccaChernoff would ban you.

@TimStone hear hear.

4:44 AM
It's happened.
I'm still awake.
Before long, I'll turn into @Jin.

@GeorgeStocker /me plays Twilight Zone theme tune.

Jin
@GeorgeStocker you make it sound like a bad thing..
@GeorgeStocker it's only 11:51...

@Jin I know. I've been in bed for an hour and 51 minutes.
I'm now out of bed.
Something's wrong.
I'm old, I don't get up this late.
So I figure I'll post the answers from the moderator chat, and that'll tire me out enough to go back to bed.

Jin
@GeorgeStocker pfft if you're old then what am i..

@Jin I didn't say it.

Jin
4:54 AM
@GeorgeStocker btw, there's a programmers book club meetup group in Nova, if you're interested

WHAT?!?! How did I not know about this?
(Interested)

@Jin Score, and I've already read their upcoming book, so I'm not behind. Happy dance.

Jin
@GeorgeStocker I joined that club.. no idea why.. i doubt i'll ever go.
I have a habbit of joining groups and never attend.

Heh. I know the feeling.
I really wish there were a group of people that wanted to get into DnD.
I never played, and I'm feeling like I missed a part of my life.

Jin
5:04 AM
@GeorgeStocker let's be LARP BFFs...

Isn't LARP a little different than DnD?
I'm down with it, I just thought it was something different.

Jin
i have no idea. i know nothing about D&D.

Oh wow. I see it's not a new question, then. :-P

Jin
5:09 AM
@GeorgeStocker no accepted answer?

@Jin didn't really like the answers.

I think you could LARP DnD but the constant dice rolling would get distracting.
That's what iPhones were invented for, right?

5:50 AM

@GeorgeStocker Have fun!

4 hours later…
10:15 AM
Anyone got kids here? My daughter (6) loves this game (me too): fungooms.com

10:35 AM
WTF, Groupon.
> Statistically, home is the place you're most likely to fall asleep under a running lawn mower or spontaneously combust while trying to slow dance with a running lawn mower. Find a safe haven with today's Groupon for a one-night stay at The Sayre Mansion.

@Benjol no kids, but it is a nice game!
Although I am having trouble getting it.
Maybe later :)

@Pekka, each sub-game yields a star. My daughter wasn't particularly motivated until she discovered that. Bad sign :)

@Benjol hahaha, I see! :)

There's only one game we haven't managed to get the star from :)

It's really nicely done. Nice graphics, easy interface... I like it

10:41 AM
If you really want to waste your life, look at this game... ouverture-facile.com
There's an english translation, IIRC (blocked from here). But whatever you do, don't cheat. I did, at level 34, and totally lost motivation afterwards :(
Fortunately, StackOverflow came along shortly after that :)

Looks interesting!

@DanGrossman sounds like the ads Steam was running last summer :)
@Benjol hmmm... achievements...

Anyway, if anyone else has good games for 6-year-old girls (and their fathers), @ me them here :)
@badp, or should I join gaming to get that kind of info?

@Benjol you could try on chat, not on the site

@Pekka, are you deliberately popping in and out, or is it your connection?

10:48 AM
we tried to have game-recs, we really did, we discussed for four months and tried to come up with various solutions. Nothing really worked, so we gave up and declared them off topic.

@badp, yeah, I guess it's the cooking equivalent of recipes...

if by that you mean "how do I cook X", then it's what Gaming focuses on
if by that I mean, "I have a toothpick, an apple and some canned tuna and 12 guests. What can I cook?" then you are correct
bbl

@badp ok

11:32 AM
@Benjol It's deliberate. I check in from time to time to see what's up, but I usually can't stay long :)
@DanGrossman what an idiot

@Pekka, ok, is this part of the progressive weaning? :)

@Benjol Heh! No, it's always been my way of using chat for some reason.
There are several comments about my head flying in and out in this room's history

12:26 PM
@DanGrossman Its a fair comment - to a frequent user the "Interesting" tab is the most useful view, but to a new user a page full of unanswered questions probably isn't the most reassuring first impression.
Anyone had any experience loading the data dump on low-memory machines? I've only got 3Gb or so on my laptop and it keeps on timing out :-(

question was, will it count?

Can't see why it wouldn't

Remember to breath before the interview

You should also probably breathe during the interview (advanced technique: if you're either extraordinarily good or extraordinarily bad, hold your breath for the entire, very short, duration of the call).

breathing aside... I've been reading about the company, and I've put notes next to all of the bullet points in the job posting to remind myself of things to discuss..

The zero-width space (ZWSP) is a non-printing character used in computerized typesetting to indicate word boundaries to text processing systems when using scripts that do not use explicit spacing, or after characters (such as the slash) that are not followed by a visible space but after which there may nevertheless be a line break. Normally it isn't a visible separation, but it may expand in passages that are fully justified. In HTML pages this space can be used as a potential line-break in long words as a replacement for the non-standard tag. However, it is not supported in all web browse...

@YiJiang that's awesome
@ChrisJesterYoung thanks, that's exactly it :)

@badp My pleasure. :-)

Who scheduled a 9am THC? ):

@RebeccaChernoff and stretches

@RebeccaChernoff probably you :)
which one is it?

@RebeccaChernoff The same person who scheduled a 4am THC ;)

2:16 PM
i totally missed yesterdays thc ><

Heh, I've been so very glad that none of the THCs so far have been overnight for me.

@RebeccaChernoff: Sleep? What's that?

THC?

@Fosco Yesterday's THC was pretty boring, I wanted to see more evil in the candidates

@badp Rook wasn't invited?

@badp oy

@badp I openly endorsed Rook during the primary, in one of my tweets. But would the crowd listen? NOOOOO! ;-(

even Mrozek seemed like a pretty reasonable guy!

Inconceivable!

I know!

2:24 PM
You need a better acronym
Tetrahydrocannabinol ( ) (THC), also known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), Δ1-THC (using an older chemical nomenclature), or dronabinol, is the main psychoactive substance found in the cannabis plant. It was first isolated by Yechiel Gaoni and Raphael Mechoulam from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, in 1964. In pure form, it is a glassy solid when cold, and becomes viscous and sticky if warmed. An aromatic terpenoid, THC has a very low solubility in water, but good solubility in most organic solvents. Like most pharmacologically-active secondary metabolit...

@RebeccaChernoff /me does the cup-swapping game on @RebeccaChernoff. ;-P

the what?

@RebeccaChernoff Googling "princess bride cup swapping" didn't come up with any video results, so just try to recall that scene from memory. :-)

I can't seem to find ANY reference to it on wikipedia, would love to find it

2:36 PM
ohhhhh

Hi, any thoughts are welcome on my meta question here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/77220/…
i.e. do people think my concerns have any merit?

@willjcroz > most moderation has to deal with people issues rather than technical issues.
the appropriate comments have been made already, you're not likely to get much more commentary
What exactly is it that you want feedback on?

Good morning everyone

@Josh sorry to jet out on you like that the other night. Things have been ... interesting ... but not dire. Talking did ensue. We'll chat later.
@willjcroz I for one do not.

@drachenstein : ok thanks, I just wondered if people in general agree with that stance. I just worry that there is a danger that a 'positive feedback' effect may reduce SO's generality long term
but I am glad to have my concerns refuted :-)

2:42 PM

@willjcroz I read your question earlier today, and upvoted it for being a question worth considering, but generally disagree with your concerns.
By the way: who likes upvoting freehand crap? You do!

@willjcroz two things: if you hover on a line there is a little box on the right that has a (return arrow) that you can click to reply to the message in context, so you don't have to type my name (or you can start to type it and press [tab] to autocomplete [we programmers are lazy, no?]) and also, there's not feedback loop in place wrt moderators.

@PopularDemand : thanks, glad to hear people do not share my concerns :-)

But it's still a good question.

@drachenstern thanks, did not know about the return arrow and tab did strange things in my browser

2:50 PM
@RebeccaChernoff That. :-)

I always think of it as "wine in front of me" not "cup swapping game" i guess

Hehehe. :-)

3:01 PM
@ChrisJesterYoung I did, too. He would have been an interesting candidate if he had been a bit more serious about it
42 mins ago, by Chris Jester-Young
@badp I openly endorsed Rook during the primary, in one of my tweets. But would the crowd listen? NOOOOO! ;-(

@Pekka I guess it depends on what constitutes "serious". I think he's serious in that he would mete out harsh punishment for users who fall out of line. I also think he's serious in wanting to be a moderator. :-)
However, I didn't get the impression that most of the voters were particularly up for that sort of harsh punishment. :-P

Oh, why not. :-)

I know why not

My freehand half-circle linked above has moved.

3:06 PM
I would have liked to know what exactly that would have meant - which he never elaborated on. What kinds of infractions he would respond to harshly, etc. etc. that's why I never thought it was serious - the nomination was designed to provoke, not to incite serious discussion.
But well - maybe better luck (or at least a more verbose nomination) next year :)

@badp What, you don't want another hit of THC? :-O

@RebeccaChernoff wouldn't it be a good idea to ask candidates to use the reply function?
Josh was complaining yesterday about the difficulty to sort answers properly without that

@Pekka just dock them points :P

@Pekka Indeed, more specifics could be interesting. I was thinking along the lines of: Inappropriate edit, 1 day ban; Off-topic post or wrong answer, 1 week ban; etc.

+1 @Pekka

3:10 PM
@drachenstern no need to apologize! (sorry, my system just crashed and I am crazy busy with the SU Town all. We'll caht later!)

Hmmmm.
I have enough rep to vote in SU, and therefore I should vote, but, really, I have next to zero involvement in the SU community.
I can read the THC to see which candidate(s) have values most in line with mine, but that's about it.

I just used "thingamadingdong" in normal conversation...save me.

Hahahahaha.

@tombull89 What is that, a cheap knockoff of thingadongdong you got for $5 in New York?

@Pekka Speaking of @RebeccaChernoff's question about mod binding votes and heavyhandedness, I can imagine that's another superpower Rook would use to the full. :-)

3:19 PM
In any case, coming here about that is like asking for help with your alcoholism in a shady bar. (...or tavern, as it were.)

@ChrisJesterYoung yeah. That's why there would have to be some nuanced discussion.

@Josh, no rush, but if you have a minute I'd still really like to know how you discovered those firewall settings from last week; whether it was Live HTTP headers or just something you read or what.

I worked on the strings file yesterday. I hope to be done real soon. Then I can seen it to translators.

@PopularDemand sure, after I finish the SU Town Hall digest, it's causing my brain to be at 100% CPU utilization right now ;-)

in Super User Election: Town Hall Chat on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 3 mins ago, by Josh
@MichaelMrozek if this was posted on SO's town hall, it was someone stealing it from when I asked it in SF's town hall ;-)
@Josh It worries me that you transcribed that into the digest apparently without even reading it

3:27 PM
@MichaelMrozek I did read it :-)
I even said it was a personal favorite of mine in the digest :-D

Why does that onebox have a meta icon?

@Moshe did you need access to the digest, like, to help me?
I'm trying to keep it only a summary, not cluttered, but if you want access to help post I'd be glad to give it

@Josh No, I didn't understand what was happening there, my mistake. I mistook the SU Town Hall digests as posts.

no problem, does it make sense now?

@Josh Yea

3:40 PM
SU is really not getting the whole "stars for questions" thing

@MichaelMrozek I noticed that :-)
makes m job even harder, LOL

That's probably why they did it. I approve
People should just bold questions, but that requires getting people to actually do that, which is work
2

@MichaelMrozek Someone should probably ask a question on how to star.

:D. "A room's policy is only to star a certain type of post, but a bunch of people are starring the wrong type. Do you clear the invalid stars?"

lol, nice.

3:44 PM
Lucky PC is lucky!
...in retrospect

> Thumbs up if you knew it was going to land on Lose a Turn.
Yes, that required a considerable degree of intuition. Why do I read Youtube comments?

@badp Isn't the Mac, the kid from "Accepted"?

Uh oh. Now we've got Josh live, demanding answers to questions people were trying to dodge :)
4

@MichaelMrozek HAHA

@MichaelMrozek dodge, people, dodge

3:48 PM
Ok, I took a break, had a conference call, researched a bug or three, and then came back to chat. I see nobody looked for the reference, so I did.

Pivot back to the economy! PIVOT!

@drachenstern What reference?

1 hour ago, by Chris Jester-Young
@RebeccaChernoff /me does the cup-swapping game on @RebeccaChernoff. ;-P

Ah

The cups and balls is a classic performance of magic with innumerable adaptations. The effect known as acetabula et calculi was performed by Roman conjurers as far back as two thousand years ago. One popularly circulated painting of two men holding two inverted cups over two round objects has been taken by some as evidence that the effect dates back to Ancient Egypt, though experts now doubt that that is what the picture shows. Indeed the more commonly accepted view now is that the image depicts something rather more mundane: the baking of bread. The most widely performed version o...

@Josh Why?

@Moshe trying to keep up with the live chat / make the digest / and deal with work, LOL

@Josh Ah, I hear
Can you filter the posts by user? You can use that to grab all the posts by candidates, likely relevant posts.
