12:00 AM
So, those are the legal and sociological concerns.
Not to mention, there's always the potential threat of child predators, and some members of the SE network (users, not staff or moderators) have gone around with swastika or pedobear avatars, so we obviously can't be adults even when we're adults. Bringing children around just increases the potential negative behaviors.
Which is an interesting tidbit if you want to hang out on meta, we do have a minimum level of acceptable on avatars. Things which are known to be hate- or predatory- oriented are deemed unacceptable, so if you ever see someone that has a specifically hateful or predatory avatar, you're not doing an injustice to mention it to a mod or here.
Doesn't mean that it gets removed for sure, just saying there's a precedent and it would be acceptable to ask about it.

I don't think I've ever seen any even borderline avatar cases.. maybe I just don't pay enough attention to them.
But the kid seemed reasonably mature, until he actually started a chat room to ask me if I had downvoted one of his answers.
Downvote witch hunting, not exactly professional.

@Mannimarco probably because the SE team does a good job of keeping those to a minimum.
@Mannimarco hence the issue with inviting people who are not socially mature into the network.
And that's not to say that only teenagers fall into that category, of course

I'll admit I've had my off days as well, I got in a cat fight with John Skeet at one point.

Jon Skeet
Yeah, there's certain people you just won't win with ;-)
But if you ever wanna know what's up on the network, this is the place to ask.
So did you send an email to community then?

I always loved the Jeff Atwood effect.
+10 upvotes; Jeff: I don't like this.; 30 downvotes.

12:10 AM
Doesn't always happen tho
Sometimes that Jeff bit is an answer, and it ends up obliterated

True.
I wish there was a 5 minute grace period where you could not edit your post at all :P
Here I am ranting about FGITW and it hasn't actually specifically annoyed me today.
You know what?
I'm just going to say it.
br0wn

12:55 AM
The kid that got suspended was under 13?

1:14 AM
@Purmou If you're also under 13, now's a bad time to make that public...
;-P

nope, I'm 15

Oh, good. Not only are you clear to use the network, you're A-OK in @jco's book as well.

@Shog9 indeed.

If I'm under 13, and have 10+ years of professional work experience does that make me a terrible liar?

Well, at least old enough to be beaten with a rubber hose if you screw up ;-)

1:15 AM
When I was 13, I had 5 years of work experience

And anyways, do you disagree with my 15 age?

it's definitely case specific

@mootinator Depends; do you have at least 7 years of experience with Windows Server 2012?

there's no way to sum up the behavior of the teen population
which is why so many people have problems with age restrictions for driving

@Shog9 No, but I have 20+ years experience with iOS development.

1:17 AM
@mootinator That'll do.

@moot That's more than Apple!
but, as a 15 year old myself, I can say that there are plenty of people my age and younger who are capable of interacting in SE just fine
perhaps not Meta, though.
The only reason I haven't lost all my rep is because I've deleted the insanely downvoted ones with incomplete plans to improve them, echoed what the old farts say all the time in answers (ensuring I get upvotes), and making radical suggestions only occasionally
and you know, even my "radical" suggestions aren't even that radical. they're usually big for a day then die down, lol

@Purmou yes, they are capable of it. So is an 8 year old.
They frequently don't however.

I was told to come out from the back room? :-)

Just to lurk, damnit

Oh. You should be more clear!
=p
The air is getting stale back there anyway

1:28 AM
they don't because there really aren't as many 13 and 14 year olds as you may think...

I knew we should have had a window in that back room!
@Purmou a better strategy is just to use random unicorn and freehand circle images :-)

@TheUn that only works if you...
I don't know, but it doesn't always work! :P

It's pretty reliable :-)
If that fails, just participate in "illegal reputation exchanges" :-D
Oh MSO, how I love you

:D
Hmm, I need 114 rep to get close votes. Time to post terribly unpopular things.

104 now :-)
Just doing my part!

1:52 AM
@mootinator are you serious? I need 124. o.o

@Purmou Illicit voting ring!

well, i'm sure we all have plenty of good answers worth upvoting
8D

@mootinator Isn't that what the Tavern has always been? :-)
@Purmou 126 now ;-)

@TheUnhandledException lol

(I was totally joking @Purmou, in case you didn't know)

2:02 AM
lmao 126 now

What if I go on a serial upvoting and downvoting binge.
At about a 5:1 ratio.
Does the fraud detection system give me my reps back?

Yes

@jcolebrand DON'T ENCOURAGE HIM! :-)

Hooray

I'll bet @mootinator will start his downvote rampage against interrobang gravatars...
Also, it is too late, my typing suffers

2:07 AM
@TheUnhandledException /me shakes his fist at interrobangs
@TheUnhandledException /me shakes his fist at interrobangs

@mootinator /me shakes his fist at double posts

there is no such thing as a /me reply
there is no try.

there is no such thing as /me sadly
But there was not

wonders what you're on about

I'm just sleepy
Please ignore my rantings
Sleepy and frustrated by dd: /dev/disk1: Input/output error to the point of becoming nonsensical :-p

2:14 AM
lol @TheUnhandledException
it's not as funny when I'm not here to live the moment you tell me you downvoted me XD

@Purmou that makes it even funnier

wonders why this works then
@TheUnhandledException If rchern allowed it in the userscript, I can't imagine why you wouldn't consider that [status-completed]

@Shog9 It's 50% there
I disagree with her implementation

I know. No CPU-sucking timers at all - wtf?

I think /me should be sent and then it should be interpreted
@Shog9 lmao

2:17 AM
garbage disposal team, in position?

Take your best shot! NO GARBAGE DISPOSAL AT MY NEW LOCATION!
XD

Hey, if I get a garbage disposal out of it - even a broken one - I'm game.

@TheUnhandledException Sorry, had to QoS my wife's laptop to liberate some bandwidth for my personal use.

@TheUnhandledException lulz, as if I'd let a minor detail like that get in my way.

2:19 AM
y'know how much work it is to finely mince all of my garbage before washing it down the drain? A LOT, that's how much.
I could just toss it in the trash, or compost it, but the principle, y'know?

Thinking about /me and the chat userscript makes me wish I was working on ThirdPlace.js instead of real work right now

@TheUnhandledException I went for the looks decent everywhere instead of looks crappy for a huge majority and great for a very minor few

@TheUnhandledException Yeah - slacker.

Point well taken

2:24 AM
@RebeccaChernoff That's the sort of thing a communist would say. Screw the proletariat - make it look shiny for the 1%ers!

Booo communism.

2:36 AM
And oy gets 3 stars. It's comforting to know that nothing changes around here!
OK, I'm off for the night, catch you all later!

Clint Eastwood's RNC speech was insulting.
Wait, did I really just bring up politics in the Tavern?

Question
Does anybody know where to contact Facebook to change a display name for a third time?

1 hour later…
3:45 AM
Chat broke?

Apparently.

I missed you lovely Tavern
7

Well.
I now know what to definitely not mention in this room.

Facebook.

3:58 AM
@Purmou mwahahahaha

I seriously need to go to sleep.
What's a

that's what alt+1 gives
not sure if those correspond though :P
LOL.
status-completed

Who woulda thought.
And because it's my own question, I got to cast my first meta close vote :P
Hooray for that.

4:13 AM
I'm excited for you
Wow...that...didn't originally come out as intended.

@mootinator =D

C|'^-

Hello, mammals.

Hello
Filed 4 radars tonight

4:25 AM
Radars fit in a filing cabinet?

No, they fit in bug reporting software.
@mootinator Well, perhaps a large cabinet

@mootinator I don't even slightly understand that emoticon haha.

@jadarnel27 I started making a profile of someone wearing a bowler hat and gave up after the nose.

I, um, definitely see...that.

4:37 AM
@mootinator It could also be a half-face holding up a backwards "P" with a head-arm.
Why is there always that awkward silence after I write something?

chirp

So... dark weather outside, huh?

It's nighttime.
You know.
Depending on the timezone.

@minitech bro!

Whew thought I was going to have to carry that awkward conversation.
status-awkward-silence

4:45 AM
should i try to crash the room again? it would no longer require us to see the awkwardness of the silence...

REPS
I mean. Go ahead, make my day.
Communism is the best system of government, it just hasn't been implemented correctly yet.

You're all delusional. Obviously, this was rchern's doing.

@Shog9 Uh-oh, what'd I miss.

A good pint of Fat Tire

And who removed the three stars from oy?

4:50 AM

You're all delusional. Obviously, this was rchern's doing.

The response of a true criminal!
Still valid!

Yeah, I'm still suspicious that the SQL server might have been a communist sympathizer.
Excuse me.
That comment will be funny once my username refreshes.

Hahah, nicely done.

you silly dog

5:02 AM
Your username still isn't
...so, not as funny.

Odd.

so, should i take a four-day-a-week calculus class?

Oh look, even the Communist Party of Canada uses jQuery. There really is a plugin for everything.

Why would the communist party of Canada accuse hardware of being a communist sympathizer?

Q: Canada is not in England

Douglas SquirrelIf I visit http://careers.stackoverflow.com/employer/cv/18130 I see that this candidate wants to hear about positions in "Canada, England United Kingdom". Note there actually is a tiny village called Canada in the county of Hampshire - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellow,_Hampshire. However...

@mootinator To exaggeratedly boast of the strength of the proletariat, surely.

5:08 AM
I control the proletariat with an iron fist. And don't call me Shirley.
Night.

G'night

8 mins ago, by Purmou
so, should i take a four-day-a-week calculus class?

@Purmou yeah, that would probably help

@jcolebrand help with what?

everything

5:14 AM
lol, you don't even know what I plan on doing :P
keep in mind I'm still in High School, the class is 2 1/2 hours long

For starters, calculus helps with physics

which i would also take eventually

5:36 AM
Every time I see someone type "You are to [adjective]!" (i.e. "You are to funny!"), it makes me think they were writing an analogy and gave up halfway through. "You are to proper-grammar as Charlie Sheen is to sobriety"

You are to funny as explaining a joke is to... uh, also funny.

\o/

ooooo this Lay's bag says I could win $1,000,000 if I "do them a flavor"

That is totally going in my diary journal, "Today, I was vaguely insulted by Shog9"

Makes me think of Diary of a Wimpy Kid
My mom flipped out today because she was going through the music on my phone and noticed I had all of Justin Bieber's songs...

5:44 AM
"Son, you know we'll always love you, but... Some things are just a bit hard to accept, and... This is one of them."

My parents are very accepting. :P

Still... Bieber...

"Also, I think animuson implied I was a wimpy kid"

Totally

I also have One Direction and Jesse McCartney. :P
and... COOKIES
They sell peanut butter wafer cookies now!

5:48 AM
Cookies on your phone? Don't the crumbs get stuck in the keypad?

I don't have a keypad.

Suddenly, I see the advantage of touchscreens.

jesse mccartney's not bad. neither is one direction, i give them props. simon never signs anyone.

5:50 AM
Eventually I'm going to sign on to the Tavern and the entire star list is just going to be Rebecca saying oy...

Hmm.
@animuson ...and you're gonna say, "What, this again?!"

@animuson This is why star rate limits were introduced.
TRUE STORY.
@Shog9 Is that still admissible as evidence in the copyright violation case if the lawyers can't resit eating it mid-trial?

@TimStone At that point, the judge has to stop the trial and chastise the lawyers with, "you best have brought enough for everyone..."

Man, I'd volunteer to be on that jury

Tough job, that. Do biscuits count as prior art?

5:54 AM
I want to be on a jury! Unfortunately my county doesn't accept volunteers. :(

I dunno about biscuits, but I suspect the fact that it goes suspiciously great with milk is a sign of collusion.

stops blaming tim for localsede problems

Whew

@Shog9 how dare you!
(stop, that is)

Well, since you fixed it, it obviously can't have been his fault...

6:01 AM
I'm willing to go along with this logic

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it

that's a dangerous thing to do.

I find it helps to not think about it too much and just focus on the part where it's not my fault.

No, that part makes it even more absurd

We all need a little absurdity in our lives to ease the day-to-day tension.

6:05 AM
on that note, the bronze chat badge method is called GetUsersWhoAreSoDevotedToChatThatTheyDeserveShinyBling (no joke)
10

That is fantastic

nothing beats the cardiologist imo.

at what age does SE start hiring?

@Purmou we're 4 now
have been hiring since forever

lol, smart
i meant what's the minimum age for applicants to be considered?

6:07 AM
probably 18 I'd guess
though I don't know if it's written down anywhere

hmm

I wonder if that Kinect kid can do css...

I think Emmett is still the youngest (at least among the devs)
he's 26 now

In practice you need to be of legal drinking age to deal with the copious amounts of bug reports and feature requests, though.

legal drinking age where though?

6:09 AM
@balpha Is there even a minimum drinking age in Berlin?

yeah, in Germany it's 16 for beer and wine, and 18 for the rest

@balpha I was just going with "place of residence" to keep it simple.

6:29 AM
@balpha Apparently, duty calls even for the President.

Someone is wrong in the world!

Yeah, that's a lot more duty.
painstakingly tries not to be immature
Why on Earth am I still awake?

@jadarnel27 because you wanted to wait until I told you this will be part of the next build? (:

@RebeccaChernoff That must have been it. Worth it!

6:59 AM
Sad. My stats for the ended up at 99 score when they got recalculated. Now I have to wait another entire day!

for the outspoken badge, do you need 10 messages with 10 stars each?

No, you need 10 messages starred by 10 different users...
It's a tad complicated.

it's graph theory :)

so, 10 messages, each with 1 star from different users would count?

> Consider the bipartite graph whose vertices are all your messages and all the users, and whose edges are the stars you received. So a user (vertex) and a message (vertex) are connected by an edge if and only if the given user has starred the given message. You are eligible for the Outspoken badge if and only if this graph has a matching number of at least ten. source
@Purmou yes, if they are ten different users

7:02 AM
ah, i get it...just can't explain it very well, lol
that seems like such an easy badge

SPAM! Blast it away! Pew pew pew!

If anyone is around, can someone point me to the question that says questions with close votes aren't tweeted?
Because I just hit on a question that got tweeted despite me dropping a close vote on it minutes earlier.

@jokerdino got a link to the question?

Q: Are X.04 releases generally more stable than X.10 releases?

I have 12.04 and 11.10 but 12.04 keeps logging me off. Should I rather wait for the 12.10? Please say the differences between a X.04 and a...

@jadarnel27 no, but the bounty is almost up

Hmmm. I really thought "infatuated" started with an "e" until just now.

Q: Acknowledging "thank you" comments

Michael LiuPrevious discussion: Official reference for “don't leave ‘thank you’ comments” Is it acceptable to write a thank you in a comment? I think there's general agreement that thanking a person for a good answer isn't what comments are for. However, if a user does thank me for an answer, may I ackn...

lol, I almost suggest an answer saying to "...you can up-vote his comment before flagging. If he don't lack basic deduction skills, he will assume you got his message (in case the comment is not yet deleted)."
but, it is obviously not possible to up-vote and flag...

The proper response is to post another comment reading,
> Why, you are very welcome @name! I'm glad you enjoyed it and I wish you all the best.
...and then flag the question to complain about noisy comments.

@ajax333221 An upvote on a thank-you comment could also come from a random visitor who found the question helpful. Not as "basic" as it seems.

@PopularDemand I knew of that possibility, but nobody up-votes those comments
my first wording had, a 99% on it

Maybe you don't. There are literally millions of SO users, I'm sure some of them do it. I think I've done it once or twice when I was extra-appreciative of an answer.

you are probably right, but note the word "assume" instead of "know"

3:36 PM
lets see what OP do now
I had this same question!, thank youajax333221 1 min ago

Soo.
As I was saying, on the wrong chat room.
in Lounge<C++> on Stack Overflow Chat, 2 mins ago, by mootinator
All I hear is a bunch of whining communist sympathizers!

Hey, whoa. A new username already?

"Council of Australians for Uneducated Americans" - that is great =)

It doesn't?
A council of Australians for Uneducated Canadians would have prevented this.

Of course not. From what I've read, they ride in the pouches.

Hahaha, awesome reference.

:D
Next they'll be telling us Brazil is not in America.

A friend of mine got really irritated a few years ago when people were making fun of Sarah Palin for not being able to name all the countries of North America, on the grounds that the Caribbean nations technically have to be included, and very few people can do that.

I get irritated when people make fun of politicians for not being able to do things most people can't do.
I'm bi-partisan that way, except it only seems to happen to conservative politicians.
So it makes me look like one of them.

I like politicians who admit that there are things they can't do.
Or don't know.
actually, that's good not only for politicians

4:07 PM
Peña Nieto failed to name 3 books he had read... He named two (one including the bible) and the other he said the author was X instead of Y and still won the president elections in mexico
not something I feel proud of...

I like Stack Overflow. Because it constantly proves to me how much I still don't know. About my own field.
Politicians are expected to know everything.
None of them do.
Most of them pretend they do anyhow.

Yeah, I expect politicians to surround themselves with people they trust and who know what they're talking about and who actually get listened to. We could call them "advisors".
I can dream, right?

4:43 PM
@balpha Agreed. I sometimes wonder if people like us are merely outnumbered by anti-intellectuals, or if good people do get elected and then get overwhelmed by the system, or we talk a lot but don't vote, or what. (Actually the answer is probably the same answer that applies to most complex questions, "a combination of the above factors and other factors not listed.")

@PopularDemand Hey... I'm an anti-intellectual.

Fortunately, I'm only pseudo-intellectual

whew
My grandfather, a nationally recognized civil engineer(ing professor), is also an anti-intellectual, I might add.
In the sense that experience trumps book learnin at any rate.

> I think he may have a valid point. Perhaps apple have invented some new numbers, like eleventy-four, that don't fit into the old computers properly due to magic and stuff.
it's all so complicated!

@mccarthynator Ah, the joys of using a term that doesn't have a widely agreed-upon definition. You don't seem to be one of the group I'm talking about.

4:51 PM
@PopularDemand oh good
I usually get piled in with them because I'm wary of "experts".

Are people posting more "it's been five nanoseconds since X happened, why doesn't my network rep look right/why don't I have the badge yet" reports on Meta than they used to?

That's what happens when you start updating rep live.
Everyone expects their rep to get updated.
Live.
