@jadarnel27 I tried to see which meaning of round made more sense in here thinkexist.com/dictionary/meaning/round
where you talking using the meaning of 18?
...and I say this because I am not English native, in case it is not obvious

Q: Is it possible to remove the Careers banner with the dying starfish?

Boris TreukhovIs it possible to remove the annoying ad with the dying starfish? Certainly, this is not how my career should feel like.

Ooo, it's Friday again

@TimYiJiang Not taking the matter seriously I see...tsk tsk tsk

@Bart "Is your job as shitty as the color of this advertisement? Find a new job with Careers 2.0!"

Haha, you see. It can be used in so many ways. I should get into advertising I think

1:33 PM
@Bart I am proud of you for finding an appropriate snark outlet!

1:46 PM
<innocence>What snark?</innocence>

@TimYiJiang Bah, that guy was late to the party.
> [8/10/2012 9:52:03 AM] Tim Stone: My career should feel like a distressed starfish drying up on the beach?

We should totally onebox skype messages. Word is out that Microsoft added an API for that.

Hahah. ;)
They should spend their time adding Markdown support to Skype so I stop trying to [link](urls) unsuccessfully.

2:45 PM
:o

3:06 PM
Hahahah

Ahahaha
(I noticed too)

sorry :)

3:43 PM
I have been known to [i]italicize[/i] and [b]bold[/b] in BBCode here on SE.
Also I try to use Emacs keybindings in Word.
I am goddamn old

What is this "read only mode" business? Where should I unload my snark now?

@ajax333221 I didn't mean anything by it, actually. I'm just weird.
You can probably ignoring about 50% of what I say and still get just as much out of it. Maybe more.
@Bart I've never seen that before. Neat.

readonly-mode has existed forever, at least kinda of; Nick has recently perfected it. It's pretty nice when you move DBs or similar, and want to stay at least readable.

Perhaps the contributions to the Starfish Ad discussion triggered this....

@Bart Ah, so noone here knows either..

#stackoverflow is going read-only for a database move, HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS

4:25 PM
@balpha Thanks; is there an ETA that you know of?

Ah good, I do not have a hat, but that solves it.

Where have I seen that before..
that's not the oldest reference though.
I think the API just came back online; Newt just notified me of my scores on all SE sites.

4:46 PM
As I was trying to say before chat exploded...Maybe readonly mode should set StackExchange.options.site.globalAuthDisabled (I think that's the relevant setting, anyway) since you can't actually log in?
"Click here to refresh the page!" "Hahah, j/k"

good point, thanks

5:09 PM
@balpha I think read-only mode is a really cool idea, glad you guys have it worked out now =)

it has been used before:
Jeff Atwood on October 21, 2010

This Saturday, October 23rd, starting at about 2 PM Pacific, we will be migrating all of our primary sites from the Corvallis, OR datacenter to the New York, NY datacenter.

Please be advised that this is a major move, and while we will do everything we can to prevent major service interruptions (largely with a read-only site mode we’re introducing), there may be a few hours of unavoidable downtime.

This move is good news, though:

NYC is approximately 80 milliseconds closer to Europe, which is where a significant portion of our audience arrives from. And of course dramatically closer to the  …

Luckily no one got dysentery as a result.

@balpha Ah, that was before my time.

Where is the chat log stored on?
If they are doing a db move?

probably on another server

5:16 PM
chat lives in oregon
the rest of the network in new york
we'll also be moving chat (in fact we moved chat.meta two hours ago; the other sites happen next weekend)
but that won't take nearly as long

That's interesting

Chat is too cool for New York

New Jersey is too cool for New York.

The entire Stack just went read-only, what's going on?

I'm seeing ads on Super User, and I've been logged out...

o_O

Precisely, ads above and below posts, which I've previously only seen on Stack Overflow... (they should disappear when I can log back on, as a high-rep user)
Sigh, a big job...

Enable adblock for the time being ;)

What hosting provider or infrastructure is SE being moved to?
A blog post on blog.stackoverflow.com is sorely needed...

Well, it's not read-only any more :)

Q: Why did the entire Stack Exchange network become read-only on August 11, 2012?

DragonLord the FieryThe entire Stack Exchange network became read-only for about 90 minutes on August 11, 2012, starting from about 16:15 UTC. What happened?

We're going to have several duplicates of this question...

> ... and we're back. Tim Stone is probably the only person who noticed this anyway.
heh.

I also noticed your readonly edit :P
takes @jadarnel27's money

6:01 PM
Hey!
Why are you taking my money?

"brown has earned [Shut Up and take my Money!]"

Oh haha. That was really annoying, by the way.

Yeah, I don't have that one

I just ran the "Dark Tower" dungeon, like, 20 times to find the only person in the game that sells Spirit Stone's

Yeah, that sounds pretty tedious

6:09 PM
Wow, some people take this "unexpected" downtime really serious.

@TimStone 'Twas. Now I'm going to start looking for the Highlands Cave.

Ah, I've been there a few times. Still need to get all of the combinations for the Ancient Device in Act II though...bit of a pain, since it has to spawn in the first place, and then there's a random outcome.

hah, Mexico won gold medal on soccer vs Brasil ^_^
1-0 in under 30 seconds, the quickest goal of all time (on Olympics)

@TimStone I've never come across the Ancient Device. That looks cool. At also seems like a pain. Did you see this?

Hmm, I had not :o

6:23 PM
I strongly want to play that game, but my cd reader doesn't work... Anyone knows if there is a way to play it without cd?

@ajax333221 You don't need the CD. I never even bought one =)

o.o where can I download it
it is not free I guess, right?

Well, I bought mine from Blizzard through my Battle.net account.
@ajax333221 Correct. Once you buy it, you can just download it from their website.

I will consider the possibility of buying it... I currently play an RPG called Tibia
the game sucks and is coming to an end... I want to move out after 5-7 years of playing it

Q: Leave only one tag from two: [networking] vs [network-programming]

abatishchevCurrently on SO we have two very similar tags: networking (7677) network-programming (2639) Both are network and network programming related, have similar wiki entries. Don't we want to merge them and make synonyms? I vote for networking because x-programming on programming site is a tautolo...

Q: Merge [calculated-field] into [calculated-columns]?

abatishchevDon't we want to merge calculated-field (43) into calculated-columns (108)? This two tags I think have very similar meanings and I doubt existence of both does make sense. Does it?

Q: Government came and took my baby!

RoryOkay, so I may have left the sim Child unattended for a few hours without calling a babysitter. All was fine and they even did their homework but then Social Services turned up and stole the child! At least I'm hoping it was Social Services, it was quite a non-descript brown van. Is there an...

Given that the Conspiracy Theories SE proposal was merged into the Skeptics SE, migrate it there for fun?
