Q: Proposal for Documentation on Programmers

narawagamesStack Overflow recently launched their Documentation beta. I propose we make Documentation for Programmers.SE, too. What horror. My minor edit went thru the system 3 to 0. stackoverflow.com/posts/39194816/revisions

bah

@bjb568 The system, it does nothing.

@bjb568 Eh, it does improve the post -- it seems that's the only thing to edit in the post. So...

the following → this?
A single addition of code formatting?
It does pretty much nothing.

The code formatting part.
Very minor but I'd say it does help.

2:40 AM
Bah, the wording of the thing could be improved to make it more easily readable.
And the code formatting part alone is only 2 chars, which is why I did the 'the following' meddling.

@tchrist the author of that post

oh dear
That's a bit of a riff on the Fm nocturne in places.

Q: Why does 1/x < 4 have two answers?

Augusto Dias NoronhaSolving $1/x < 4 $ gives me $x>1/4$. The book however states the answer is: $x < 0$ or $x > 1/4$. My questions are: Why does this inequality has two answers (preferably the intuition behind it)? When using wolphram alpha it gives me 2 answers, but when using $1 < 4x$ it only gives me 1 answer....

in FAQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 11 mins ago, by Pandya
@DavidPostill ok; what qualified as spamming?

Going around chat rooms, posting the link to yours to promote it
As for a FAQ chat room, perhaps discuss with the community whether or not there is a need for one, and if so, how best to curate it and lead people to it.

@Bart how to discuss with the community?

Meta

MSE?

12:07 PM
Given that it's an SE chat, yes. But up to you. You can also just have the room exist for a while and see how it goes

I think this is a matter of chat and I'm not sure whether it is ok to discuss on MSE as question/post something like "How about creating/maintaining chat-room for users to get and give help on the various discussion related to how SE works" ! @Bart

I don't see what's wrong with discussing that on MSE. But it's up to you. Just be careful promoting your chat in various chat rooms to attract attention.

@Bart ok; Btw, can you help me to understand about feed added to chat-room?

I'm afraid not. I'm just a chat user. Don't know much more than that.

you are not turning into one of the cats, are you :p

I actually have a young cat of that breed
not purebred, but still

Hi! So I'm having trouble logging in to my gmail SO account (my only account) when my main window's chrome login is under another gmail account (work)
I tried to add a login via the network profile -> add new login but that just takes me to my profile page and nothing pops up (no blocked popups) and the console isn't throwing errors. Anybody know what's up?

It probably detects that you're already logged in via that provider and returns you to your profile page
Which is kinda annoying in this case

Very much so. I have to have 2 chrome windows open and I very much hate having to have 2 browsers open

1:37 PM
Myeah, I have the same because I like to keep work and personal separate. Easier cleanup once you leave.
But it's not ideal

I own my SO account although I'm logged into it at work
It uses my private email adress
My cleanup involves cleaning the browser history, cookies and cache here :P

If I had a third monitor I wouldn't mind, but I'm attached to my setup lol
Left monitor, ST3 and any terminal windows I need. Right side, hangouts, chrome, and spotify

grr you get spotify at work
We have a very strict no music - no headphones policy

I have 3 other machines at my desk but then I have copy+paste limitations :(
Really? Damn, I headbang at work all day and they don't care as long as I produce :P

My workplace is a little more ... traditional
Lots of arbitrary and strict rules. Thankfully the employment law here keeps them in check with how much they can get away with

1:41 PM
Holy frick. If I didn't have my headphones, I wouldn't get anything done. Too much noise here.

My office is a bit ruthless when it comes to underperformers. But if you do good work, you can literally do anything you want (that isn't against typical HR) like come in late, music, etc

Yeah my office isn't like that
come in late even a minute, - 30 minutes unpaid overtime and a notice. 3 notices in a month and you're canned

That's brutal. How's the turnover rate there?

not very high
People have started coming in like 15-20min early and its not an issue

Software firm?

user202362
1:44 PM
@SterlingArcher do you have a little button that says 'Person 1' on your chrome?

I don't think I've ever seen a strict software environment
@Telkitty yesm

@SterlingArcher nah, IT is a 5 person side gig here in a 200+ people company

Ahhh ok, my company is 95% software here

user202362
@SterlingArcher can you switch it? mine pops up a new window with a new identity

I can switch yes, but my work email wont let me login to stack with my personal email, which is my SO account

1:46 PM
@Magisch so basically no dev mindset over there?

@Bart our programmers are paid slightly above minimum wage
I'm an apprentice and I get a third of minimum wage

@SterlingArcher create another account and merge? No idea if that preserves the two logins though
@Magisch get out!

@Bart 2 years left
can't just leave an apprenticeship

2 years. Wow ...

I'm already 1 year in

1:48 PM
Luckily all I ever had was internships. Then again, I stuck around for 6 years after that, so I shouldn't talk.

this is a 3 year gig. I could shorten it by half a year grades permitting (they are) but only with the company's permission and they wont give

@Bart I've had that tab open on my browser (personal SO logged in on my work browser tab) so I'd rather not make a merge
Wait you have to make 1/3 min for 2 years?
How do you ... live?

not easily
I get another 250 euro or so a month from the state and some from my family

Sell blood

I donate blood roughly bimonthly, I dont sell it

1:56 PM
Donate yours, sell other peoples. It's a win win
brb

user202362
I want to donate blood, but cousin told me that one of his friend did just that ... and puff, his friend gained 10kg shortly after donating the blood

He's not supposed to eat all the cookies

@Telkitty I've been doing it ever since I was 18, and the red cross is pretty insistent on calling when I'm eligible again

user202362
I find it highly dubious, but still ...

Haven't noticed any side effects yet
gaining 10kg is not a thing from donating blood

user202362
1:58 PM
that's what I thought ...

Despite all the things you can catch that make it easier to gain weight, weight still is calories in - calories out
there is no way to alter that

I gained 20kg shortly after I moved to Switzerland. Must be something to do with the air here, or the altitude. Can't be that I stopped exercising as much.

You don't mysteriously gain weight by doing certain things, certainly not from donating blood, thats a very obvious case of correlation vs causation

user202362
if your body thinks you have lost more than normal amount of nutrients, it might try to over compensate

no

2:00 PM
Maybe they just got thick-skinned by being on the internet? :p

Final delete vote needed meta.stackexchange.com/questions/284006/… @Bart @rene

Already voted

@Telkitty Not how that works. The things that make you gain weight usually do it by increasing your appetite, or increasing your extracted calorie rate, or by making it so you absorb more calories from current food, so your already proven & longtime dietary habits then come to bite you
Donating blood in a first world country is harmless and banal

@Magisch and second world country?
@Bart so we need @rene here :D

You might catch something
clean needles are necessary
But seriously, for me donating blood is usually a 20 minute affair
Apparently they really really like O-

2:06 PM
Well, I donated 3 years of my life for my country (aka army service), think that's enough. :)

Meh. Donating blood costs me nothing, so I'm happy to help out in that way. Its a very convenient way to help (and god knows I can't afford monetary donations atm)

Can't argue with that... :)
@Bart you meant thick headed, right? Right? :P

I'll leave the interpretation to others

My one goal in life is to be a net positive on this world

I thank you for balancing me out.

2:10 PM
@Magisch so it means you won't have children? That's a common goal for people...

@ShadowWizard not planning on, no
I wouldn't make a very good parent either

Sounds like @Bart

@Bart clearly the swiss atmosphere is the cause for your weight gain

@Bart gets lots of pings
@Magisch you can't know that. That's really not a good excuse to not have children. :)
It's like not going to exams because you know you won't get 100.

@ShadowWizard oh hay

2:13 PM
@ShadowWizard that's what @Bart deserves for forgetting about us ponies before

oh hay @SterlingArcher

bad @Bart

How's it going buddy?

@Derpy clever trick, but I won't fall for it... me no pony! ;)

@ShadowWizard Thats one thing I usually say to soften the percieved harshness of what I mean by that which is that I don't want to burn my free time on raising a child which I may not even be good at in a world that seems like its anything but suited for raising children

2:16 PM
@ShadowWizard not yet.

@ShadowWizard so I was super impulsive this weekend, and I bought a bear coat

@ShadowWizard for what you know, you could reincarnate in an actual pony in your next life.
not a candy-colored pony, but still a pony
or maybe we are just characters in a videogame some unicorn is playing?

If I was an animal, I'd be a cat
I love cats

maybe, I am breaking some watcher 4th wall right now.
Hi, unicorn player!

@SterlingArcher bear coat... double meaning here? Or just a coat made of... bear? ;)
Anyway, congrats! :D
(no coats for me, our winter is not really cold...)

2:19 PM
I'm not sure about the double meaning but it's a coat made of (not real) bear lol
Real bear is super expensive and I think illegal in my area

@SterlingArcher oh. guess I'll have to Google it then... ;)

Winter was brutal last year. This year I can hibernate like the gods

And blame @Dro and @ber for making me look for double meaning everywhere! :D
@SterlingArcher gods don't hibernate. ;)
@Derpy well, you got every right to keep hoping, same way I can keep hoping to reveal your identity, or at least gender..... :D

@Derpy reminds me of Star Ocean.... one of the best games. :)
@SterlingArcher lol
Anyway how much did the coat cost, @Ster?

2:23 PM
Um.. $225 lol

@ShadowWizard that said, if this is a game, it is a really boring one.

I got 10% off haha my impulse is totally out of control

@Magisch that's a better reason, and your full right to have it. And well done for trying to be a good person by other actions. :-)
@SterlingArcher whoa.... that's lots of dollars!

I think you should add some mod and give me some magic spells, unicorn player. What fun there is in watching me write SharePoint code?

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (スターオーシャン3, Sutā Ōshan Surī, Star Ocean 3) is the third main game in the Star Ocean series. The game was developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 2 console. It was released in Japan, North America, and the PAL territories. The original Japanese release date was in February 2003 by Enix, its penultimate release before its merger to become Square Enix. It was re-released in 2004 as a two-disc Director's Cut version with bonus features such as new characters and dungeons. The North American and European versions are based on the Director...
I forgot it's part of series of games... lol
I liked the idea humans are actually a virus
@Derpy that might be true, but would still like to know for sure! :D
@SterlingArcher they don't say for every purchase, just 10% of net income. And usually companies have low net income. (though I might have misread?)

Oh, well, not as good, but still helping

friendly suggestion. That kind of jokes are a good way to win a free flag.

To be honest, not really concerned with chat suspensions
If people can't handle a joke, flag away. I won't be offended :)

this is an interesting viewpoint. Have you ever consider that maybe a prank should be funny for the one who gets pranked too, not just for the one making the prank?

Depends on the context of the prank. Is there physical harm? Emotional harm?

not really agreeing here... It is just another version of the old "Are you laughing with me or at me?"

Obviously the prank with the trainhorn blasts at elderly and children is a terrible prank, because it causes literal harm. But a joke at nobody's expense that isn't degrading to a set of peoples or genders etc?
It's semi-different though. If the joke isn't aimed at anybody, it's more of "I made myself laugh, at nobody's expense"

@rene Is that a real question? Cause they're already cooked. If you're gonna do them in the oven I'd do just a short time on 300 or so just to warm them up (or even the microwave), then throw them in the broiler for a few seconds to get them nice and crispy on the outside.
