Q: Search Categorization by Difficulty Per Subject on MSE

MariahThis suggestion has a sibling here, which is not precisely what I would like to surface to the community on MSE; Filtering tags/questions by subject *and* level of difficulty The basic idea is to introduce NOT a tag of difficultly, but rather a new search categorization based on a difficulty rat...

WTH. I just noticed the in operator in JavaScript.
I thot it was just used in for loops.
I always just used indexOf or includes before.
oh wait those do different things
Then I always just accessed it.
Come to think of it, the in operator isn't all that useful.

@bjb568 yeah, the in operator isn't the same as Python's in operator

boring
One of my coworkers used it for some reason.

one of my coworkers added underscore to the project just because "using JS' solutions" was too hard
when underscore's contains is so close to includes, it's even easier ;-;

;-;

that's what happens when you're a full stack dev who prefers one language
obviously his C# is better than mine, but my JS is better than his

For poor people who have to work 10 hours a day to keep a shelter and food on the table, they wouldn't have time to think about all those philosophical questions. Q: Why Do Judges Wear Constumes?

Ron RoystonWe know scientists wear a white lab coat to catch dirty material. Firemen a fire-retardant cape. That makes complete sense. But Judges? For example, in Canada they dress up like Santa Claus while in America they dress up like the Grim Reaper (minus the hood) and in Britain they wear carpet on ...

You kinda bury the lede here: "There are three groups of people who visit Programmers" - this is your audience, this is who you're writing for, this is why changes to guidance and branding matter, if they are to matter at all. These people are not you. They don't have half a decade of history on this site. Understanding what brings them here and what creates the misconceptions they labor under when asking is critical to success. Otherwise, like the boxer, they'll hear what they want to hear and disregard the rest.... — Shog9 ♦ 24 hours ago

The more I read that discussion, the more sense it makes to reboot the site via Area 51.

user315433
Then it will be - presumably - moderated by the same people using it.

No, go propose to merge it with Stack Overflow, given that it's really the same topic anyway. :D

6:20 PM
rebooting the site means you lose all of the activity
you can migrate some questions, but still

user315433
Or merge, indeed. Just make Prog.SE posts a different category of posts, which are located under another tab but still earn reputation.

heh, given the hate people are giving docs rep, I don't know how they'd take yet another change to their precious rep
@ᴡᴏʀᴅs there was a long argument conversation in Chat about it recently if I'm remembering correctly

What we really need is rep-categories, with some sort of formula that seems logical, but isn't really, to work out the privileges. Just strange enough to upset those "with the wrong kind of rep". And then we make some popcorn and enjoy.

what we really need is to make winterbash non-stop

Noooo, then we won't have people asking the same old "can I keep my hats?" question any more

user315433
6:25 PM
The best thing about winterbash is that it has a checkbox that makes it easy to ignore. Some other features don't

Like "this rare flower is actually blurry and blossoms once every 7 years"

All I know is that you have to cut him off at an angle to keep him alive the longest

@Bart yep

You move rene in big flowerpots

6:45 PM
@rene I'm starting to get a tad irritated with the doc rep situation, too
I got over 400 points for spelling fixes in an article about defining php arrays

@Magisch yes, I got +4 for two edits and no upvotes at all. Much irritated.

Its like writing a 2 minute rushed two line answer and getting 70 upvotes on it
Oh wait, that also happened to me once
SO rep can be random and frustrating

Yeah, I'm still trying to get that gold badge but ... I need to write another 400 answers if my scoring is like it is now.

I get one or two upvotes half the time
then I'll spend time researching and composing a good answer, narrowing down a question to answer it then
Aaand sniped by a guy with broken english who gets an instant accept and +8 upvotes

6:53 PM
you should try getting frustrated and contributing mainly to a beta.. much less painful

Sometimes I'm on the winning side of that coin
when I write a largely disinterested answer on some really simple question while something is uploading and get like 150 rep for it
Or some 2 line common sense thing on the work place that blows up to +100 upvotes

Some people have too much time on their hands.....

7:16 PM
Yes, but I see I have an deleted answer on that question ...

@Quill I'm more impressive that someone made a super unverbose programming language just to play code golf

@Magisch It's not all that impressive..... most of the chat regulars have written like 10 each

The limit of 5 suggested edits kind of hurts me on Philosophy; three of my pending suggestions are 2 days old, and still have just one approve vote. One more suggestion yesterday, one today, and I'm blocked.

user315433
If philosophers don't like to review edits, they should learn to spell better. :/

8:12 PM
@ᴡᴏʀᴅs weird, isn't it a Beta site?
The design is beta, privileges are beta...

user315433
No, they are graduated-without-design.

user315433
Privileges are tied to design.

So maybe it's a premature graduation...
(i.e. not enough activity to justify it)

user315433
You say the site met your threshold; what threshold is that? The linked post mentions 10 questions/day. Philosophy gets 5.8 questions/day, trailing about 13 beta sites in that category, some by the factor of 2. — ᴡᴏʀᴅs Jul 7 at 6:51

> They can be adjusted if it becomes necessary.
Maybe ask Shog to adjust it only on that site?
(e.g. to 10)
@ᴡᴏʀᴅs yeah, I agree. But what's done is done...

user315433
8:15 PM
Eh, maybe it only ever becomes a problem when I farm rep points, expecting mod election in near future.

user315433
Maybe it's better to tie this to privileges upgrade rather than graduation announcement.

@rene probably taken out as irrelevant (and possibly subject to change).

user315433
After all, the "congratulations, there is no beta label" post doesn't have any other effect on what users can do on the site.

@ᴡᴏʀᴅs yeah but it will probably happen soon, and there still won't be more active users to review suggested edits.

@Magisch you are making assumptions. One of the CMs went through some statistics last year - ~5% of those who visit posted one time. ~1% posted 5 or more times. The people you see are a fraction of that 1%. To be average, you would need to be somewhere in the middle of the 95% who have never posted.
And given they never posted... you don't have anything to measure against ;)
Point being - you shouldn't compare yourself to the other posters on SO - they are not representative.
@AstroCB imagine what I feel like when I am looking up a problem on SO and it is my answer.
