12:00 AM
Isn't that Plants vs. Zombies?

:o

@hichris123 Does that make Shog a zombie?

No, Shog would be the person playing the game. The zombies would be the cold.

That's a truly chilling thought

@Shog9 Hurray!
@Shog9 Boulder "mint" has many wonderful properties.

12:20 AM

12:33 AM
@tchrist I will soon be investigating these properties in the form of a Tin Cup julep.

I had some mint growing... it neared death, so it ended its existence atop my strawberry gelato

:D

how the hell do you kill mint?!
I've starved it, neglected it, forgot to water it, let it become infested with spider mites...
But it's always come back

Wouldn't those zombies like to know

Artificial Intelligence

Proposed Q&A site for people concerned with questions on how, why, and what with AI. The world is moving with OpenAI, TensorFlow, Ex Machina, Singularity, etc, and we want to understand what is happening with technology, philosophy, cybernetics, and soft/hardware.

Currently in commitment.

Deja vu

"AI.SE: for people who do not work with AI"

AI.SE: To do determine if you are an AI.

1:01 AM
Surprise: The site was actually a massive Turing test experiment! You all failed

@bjb568 Is this reboot #4?

IDK

I was a part of the last one. I think that was #3

Oh, there've been at least 10 previous proposals, several of which became sites.

heh

1:03 AM
@Shog9 well I was more referring to private betas.

There's CS, theoretical CS, cross validated, parenting…

What do these sites have to do with each other?

And that's not counting proposals for "The Singularity", or "Transhumanism" or "Futurism" or "Horror"

signal processing too

Problem is, we're gonna eventually end up with sites for every concrete discipline that gets lumped into AI... Because, y'know, there's folks actually doing those things.
But meanwhile, the folks who don't do them will still be chasing their holy grail, trying to get a site where they can be all Gibson about the future and ignore what's actually possible now.
So, yes: duplicate of Worldbuilding

1:08 AM
They seem to be doing pretty well...

Their design hasn't gone live yet? Didn't it get announced like >A month ago?

user202362
I mean ... current A.I. are probably a bunch of If/else (or switch) statements ... maybe with some kind of hardware interrupts, can hardly be called any kind of intelligence

@Telkitty Basic ML instances

If we had a better understanding of how artificial neural networks actually functioned...

@Quill Not sure Watson counts as "basic".

1:11 AM
(I've been taught in a machine learning/pattern recognition course that they're essentially black boxes. They can often recognize patterns very well but the behavior of the individual neurons don't give any clues.)

@tchrist I've heard a decent amount of talk about Watson but recently I haven't heard about how well it's doing in the fields it was supposed to be good for (e.g. healthcare).

user202362
Also intelligence and smart are terms over used - I mean how are Android or iphone smart phones?

user202362
because they can sense different form of touches?

@Quill I think the designer is demonstrating the "perfect is the enemy of the good" principle. (Though in fairness, he's been working on Documentation lately.)

@JonEricson I figured it was in final stage because it was added to those site icon paintings you guys have in your office
but that's cool, the docs design looks amazing :D

user202362
1:20 AM
@Quill ML has been present decades ago

user202362
If it has been 30 years and thousands of people have dedicate years in the field and produced nothing significant, you could not but ask "what's going on"

Careful about making "ML" a synonym for "AI" (in the "AI is a synonym for voodoo rituals" sense (in the "voodoo rituals are a synonym for cargo-cult behavior" sense (in the "cargo-cult is a synonym for trade industry fanboism" sense)))

user202362
in comparison, genetic studies have produced rather astonishing results in the same amount of time

Yeah, I'm not going to roll into Meta guns blazing and call it ML

Machine learning is just one form of AI, that I know.

1:24 AM
Which, in turn, is merely a very specific form of sandwich

user202362

user202362
poor thing ...

aww... that poor bush has been invaded by parasitic dog

user202362
why, I thought it's great to have salad following you around

user202362
Would be even better if there are also some grape tomatoes on it too

1:30 AM
A mature dog lays its eggs within the leaves as the bush grows; when they hatch, they devour the bush from within, leaving only a thin veneer of shrubbery surrounding the now-mature dog, which uses its gruesome disguise to sneak up on uninfected bushes... And the cycle continues.

@Shog9 You must be cooking or something...? Been a while since you were this talkative in here on a Thursday...

...it's thursday?

user202362
earth is round ... yeah 24 hour timezones

I should hope so...

Let's agree to call it Cinco de Happy Hour and speak no more of this wretched day of Thurs.
3

1:32 AM
Happy Hour isn't until Friday...
And one of your employees made a synonym. The horrors.

user202362
why have so low of a standard, I am aiming at 12 happy hours a day, every day

user202362
I mean, it's not possibly to be happy all the times, but it is possible to be happy most of the times

why get intoxicated at one hour of the day; be consistent

Awh I missed the town hall...did I miss any opportunities for swag?

@SantaClaus Yeah, you did
hairboat was giving away free timeouts

1:36 AM
Seems like it's time for some un-pinning.

@Quill Free...............timeouts?

user202362
@Quill you don't need to be intoxicated to be happy

user202362

@Telkitty it just adds to the happiness

user202362
ever heard of runners high?

user202362
1:40 AM
it's not a myth

but you can just sit and your desk and drink, you don't need to exercise

user202362
if that's all what one does to get some happiness, I am afraid you can only have 1 happy hour a day, that's not before you ruin your liver and become an alcoholic and start going through depression episodes

user202362
humans are animals, animals move, it's designed into their genetics

the best kind of high is compile high; when your code finally compiles

user202362
yes, setting goals and achieving them is another way to achieving happiness

1:45 AM
@Telkitty Half the time ≠ most of the time.

user202362
true

user202362
but can one be happy in their dreams is debatable

sorta

thanks for the help...
I'm going to assume that Shog is writing up a response currently...

But it seems to work if you take out all of the text part. i.e. if you just post the code and the image, it doesn't complain.
> This looks like spam. And we don't like spam. Unless it's served with eggs and beans.
The reason for the incorrect message is basically to make it more work for the (human) spammers who are the usual users of these characters on Stack Overflow, @Rob. Pointing directly at the bits of text they need to change sorta gives them an unfair advantage. I've added a slightly more descriptive error-message though. — Shog9 ♦ 38 secs ago

A: Can we have some moderator queue stats?

bluefeetThis is about 6-8ish months in the making but I've thrown together a few stats on flags in the SO moderator queue. SO gets a lot of flags, many of these are handled by the review queues but the mods still process a ton of flags on a monthly basis. I excluded close flags from these stats becaus...

Conclusion: there's no improvement in users' behavior on flagging things.

user315433
The stats on spam/offensive category are sad.

user315433
5:03 PM
But this: 16,550 helpful NAA flags in March... is this really how many upvoted or accepted answers are deleted as NAAs?

user315433
Or do most of these go to mods because of mixed review results?

user315433
@SmokeDetector del

5:53 PM
Flag outcomes over time:
(all flags)
(VLQ)
(NAA)

@Shog9 It makes sense why VLQ gets disputed more in comparison to others, but why are the declines a lot?
> U: This is crap.
> Mod: No, it's as beautiful as sunshine.

user315433
@PhMgBr That's not what a decline means. It means "not crappy enough for me to delete it"

I know, I was exaggerating

@PhMgBr Mod: It's just wrong / useless / boring / better than your own answer your jealous jerk

user315433
Also, these are all outcomes, not only mod-handling. Flags can be declined by review, if the reviewers are unanimous.... I think.

6:00 PM
@Meta right now, only on SO and only for questions that go through Triage

@Shog9 Don't the same reasons apply to NAA?

but that's still some reasonable number of questions
@PhMgBr sure

Just trying to see why VLQ declines are more.

@PhMgBr just to be clear, those are % values. So a higher % of all VLQ flags are disputed or declined.

In a scale this big, I think a one-percent difference means something like 500 flags.

user315433
6:02 PM
I thought closeflags are declined if there is no support.

@Shog9 Out of how many VLQ flags?

@PhMgBr depends on the month

Also the spike in VLQ (disputed) beginning in Jul 2013 is interesting.

Gotta go reason hunting for why such peaks exist. Like the 2014 NAA one.
I feel bad for mods.
The numbers make me twitch, let alone handling them.

user315433
6:06 PM
This looks like mod-handled flags only. Hence the drop after NAA went into LQRQ.

user315433
FR: image captions.

Makes sense.

@Meta not quite.
The significant drop does correspond with NAA going into /review...
...because I'm counting flags in that chart, not posts that were flagged. And NAA going into /review corresponded with the removal of the 10K flag queue.
And now you know why that damn queue was so useless.

user315433
Meaning no more pile-on flags. Okay, but then the flag totals are also (almost) useless: it does not take more work to process 5 identical flags on a post.

That's what it looks like if I chart # of posts flagged

user315433
6:10 PM
That's more informative.

yeah - also shows a marked decrease in VLQ flagged posts
Which makes sense given the changes to both their handling in review and their lack of convenience as a way to "handle" flags elsewhere.
(Note the massive spike in disputed VLQ flags following this change)
